The Prospect Watch 2.0
Last year I created this dynasty, in which I created fictional prospects and followed their careers. In the original version, I started with five prospects and created three more each year. This worked well for a while, but eventually there were so many players that it was too overwhelming, and most of them were terrible anyway.
So I'm going to try it again. We'll still be starting with 5 prospects (2 ages 16-17, 3 ages 18-21, everything else randomized), but we won't be adding more every year. I'm going to cap the number at five, which means I won't add any new players until one of the current players retires. Also, I'm playing on OOTP 16 since I don't have 17 () Here are our five prospects: 20-year-old 2B Bernie Blake, 1 star potential, 1.0 WAR this past year at Michigan State, where the competition level is great. 18-year-old RF Reggie Gross, 1 star potential, 1.6 WAR this past year at Law High School in Milford, CT, where the competition level is average. 20-year-old C Eric Lucid, 1 star potential, 0.2 WAR this past year at Utah, where the competition level is good. 20-year-old CF Lyndon Phillips, 1 star potential, 0.9 WAR this past year at Albany, where the competition level is average. 18-year-old SS Doug Rhineha, 1 star potential, 1.9 WAR this past year at Abbeville Christian Academy (high school) in Alabama, where the competition level is average. |

Third time's the charm. For some at least. The Yankees selected now 20 year old RF Reggie Gross with the 707th pick in the draft (round 24 pick 8) and have assigned him to play for the New York A2 (GCL) Yankees2. As of now it looks as if manager Joe Pettini won't be giving him much playing time, but hopefully Reggie will be able to prove himself in the little time he does get. With the 834th pick in the draft (round 28 pick 15), the Chicago Cubs drafted now 20 year old SS Doug Rhineha and sent him to play for the Chicago N (AZL) Cubs. He too won't be getting much time in the lineup from manager Carmelo Martinez. And finally, 23 year old CF Lyndon Phillips was drafted 995th (round 33 pick 26) by the San Diego Padres. He will play for the San Diego (DSL) Padres. Manager Manny Acta has him as the backup center fielder, the third string first baseman and right fielder, and the #2 pinch runner. Bernie Blake and Eric Lucid went undrafted and will try their luck again next year. |

The 2017 season came to a close yesterday in the DSL, and Lyndon Phillips has officially finished his first season as a professional baseball player. He played in 29 games as a substitute player, hitting four singles in 15 at bats while walking twice and striking out four times, good enough for a 0.1 WAR. He also played 21.2 innings at first base, 26.2 at center field, which is his primary position, and 5 at left. He played best at center field but held his own everywhere. The San Diego (DSL) Padres went 30-42, which wasn't good enough to make the playoffs as they were 18 games behind the first place Reds. Hopefully next year will be even better for Lyndon, who is now 23 years old. September 3rd Our other two pro-prospects wrapped up their seasons yesterday. Reggie Gross played in 7 games and had just one hit (a double) in five at bats. He also struck out once. He played three innings at LF and 13.1 in RF. No balls were hit his way in his one game in left, and he wasn't very good in right, putting up a -0.8 ZR and a .663 EFF, although he did not make any errors. This gave him a -0.1 WAR overall, but in a very small sample size. I think and hope he can play better than that. He won't have the opportunity to show it, however, as the New York A2 (GCL) Yankees2 finished the season 27-33, 8 games out of first. Doug Rhineha only had one plate appearance this season and he worked a walk. The rest of his playing time in the five games he was put in was spent on the field. He played a game at first base and actually played pretty well there despite it being his worst position. He also played ok in two games at short, his primary position, and performed well in two games at second base. I'd like to see him get more playing time, but he actually did well with what he was given. The Chicago N (AZL) Cubs won their division with a 32-24 record and will play against the Seattle (AZL) Mariners in the first round of the playoffs. Going into the playoffs, Rhineha is the 2nd string center fielder, and he is 3rd on the depth chart at 2B and SS. He is actually scheduled to play every 5th game at second base, so if his team can win in round 1 he should be guaranteed at least one playoff appearance. |

In the first two games of the series against Seattle, Rhineha was used as a defensive sub at second base. Seattle won game 1, Chicago game 2. He sat game 3 as his team lost 5-3, making every game left a must win. He sat on the bench again as his teem eked out a 7-6 win to send it to a game 5 back in Chicago.
I hoped that manager Carmelo Martinez would give Doug the start at second today as he promised, but he went with his regular starter instead in the win or go home game. The decision payed off as his team won 3-2 to go to the championships against the Texas (AZL) Rangers. |

Doug sat and watched as his team was swept by the Rangers, who did not lose a single game in the playoffs.

It's opening day in the MLB today, and I guess Padres GM A.J. Preller had some decisions to make, so he released Lyndon Phillips, who is now a minor league free agent at the age of 23. Hopefully it won't take him as long to find a new team as it did to get drafted. |

It didn't take long at all! Lyndon Phillips signed a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers organization and was sent to play for the West Michigan Whitecaps, Detroit's low A team. He started one game there at center field, going 1-for-3, and then was sent to the Detroit (GCL) Tigers. |

Our fourth amateur draft. Could this be the year 23 year olds Bernie Blake and Eric Lucid finally get drafted? I predict Blake gets picked and Lucid doesn't, since Lucid's potential is now down to a half star. And I was right. Blake was drafted by the White Sox 868th overall (round 29 pick 19) and will start out with the Chicago A (AZL) White Sox. Ryne 'Ryno' Sandberg, former Phillies' manager who is in his second year with the team, will be giving Bernie little to no playing time. |

2018 Rookie Leagues Opening Day
Manager Carmelo Martinez seems to have learned his lesson from not starting Doug Rhineha at all in the playoffs last season, so this year he's starting him at center field and batting him 9th. CF is the worst of his four positions, so hopefully he's able to keep up. Basilio Cabrera has Lyndon Phillips slated as the backup 1B and CF and the 3rd string RF. He's also the team's #1 pinch runner. Bernie Blake is now the #4 pinch runner for his team. |

Reggie Gross signed a 1 year minor league deal with the Nationals and will play for the Washington (GCL) Nationals. Hopefully things go better this time around. |

So far not so good for our prospects. Bernie Blake hasn't even played a game yet this year. Reggie Gross has played in 13 games, and he has just 1 hit in 12 at bats. He's hit 2 RBI, walked once, and struck out 3 times. His WAR is -0.3. Lyndon Phillips has struggled in the Gulf Coast League, going 1-for-9 with a walk and 3 strikeouts. He has played well in the field at first base, but his WAR is still -0.1. Doug Rhineha has started 26 games this year, so he's had plenty of time to prove to his organization that he's not worth keeping around. He's hitting .171 in 76 ABs and has just 1 double, 4 RBI, 4 walks, and has struck out 19 times. His ZR in right field is -4.9, and his WAR is -1.0. |
