Baseball Down Under (ABL)
So I started this dynasty a few days ago, after playing OOTP for a few years and lurking around here for some months I felt like sharing this dynasty. In short, I let it sim for a few years in order to get some history and managed solely the growth of the league, specifically though expansion in Australia.
I wanted to share the league, interact, and maybe even role play to an extent. I have and will continue to just take the role of commish and see how I can grow the league and baseball in a somewhat realistic mannor. Specifically, I am looking for feedback and assistance on creating immersion that both I and the community crave. So getting to it. Below is a quick summary of the league from 2016-2029. And a handy map of the teams locations Not pictured: Perth Heat, Auckland Armada Here is a quick summary made from changes made to the league: 2018
2022 and 2023
2026
2028
Additionly in terms of a quick history here is a list of the championships. Championships by State - Amt - Most Recent Victoria - 6 - 2029 New South Wales - 3 - 2028 Queensland - 3 - 2022 Western Australia: 1 - 2019 Southern Australia: 1 - 2017 Feel free to post any comments, feedback, or questions. I will post some team summaries/histories in order to give you all a background over the next few days. I hope for interaction especially during the offseason to help make league decisions with a little bit of role playing and the like. Last edited by gregisawesome13; 08-14-2016 at 04:20 PM. Team Summaries
Outlook approaching the 2030.
Adelaide Bite - Adelaide, Southern Australia - 1 playoff appearence, 1 Claxton Shield Championship (2017) - Rivals: Port Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth Adelaide, one of the original six, has struggled in recent years. With the introduction of Port Adelaide, there has be been an uptick in their performance. They peaked in 2017 with a title over Brisbane anchored by Stefan Welch, whom writers say is the best postion player in ABL history so far. Adelaide struggled in the early 20's as they spent big time money with little results. As a result they floundered for nearly a decade near the bottom of the table. Their 2030 campaign will be determined on their ability to retain two time Player of the Year, third baseman Casper Barber (active leader in HRs) and find adequate pitching to help them navigate through the season. Auckland Armada - Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand - 0 playoff appearances - Rivals: none Auckland, a recent expansion team from 2028, must prep differently for their 2030 campaign. They have finished last the past two years, with no signs of improvement. A struggle with finding 8 Kiwis to match the level of compeition really tested their front office's ability to assemble a roster with any depth. This team may struggle for awhile till New Zealand's talent base catches up in order to form a decent team. There have been talks within the commish's office of moving the team to Wollongong or to the Central Coast. Brisbane Bandits -Brisbane, Queensland -5 playoff appearences, 1 championship (2021) -Rivals: Adelaide, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast Brisbane, one of the original six, put together an early stretch of great performances in league history. Between 2016 and 2021 they had four playoff appearences; but were only able to win one title (2021). This greatly increased baseball popularity within the region. Supporters in the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast regions applied for licenses for their own franchises. Brisbane's first manager Dave Nilsson, is still one of the most successful managers in league history with 207 wins. Their current manager, Brandon Hyde, tops the list at 222 wins (with a career split between Perth and Brisbane). Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast make up three way rivarly to be the best baseball team in Queensland. The Bandits finished third in 2029 and were one game away from being in the Claxton Shield. Canberra Calvary -Canberra, Australian Capital Territory -1 playoff appearance -Rivals: Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle Canberra, an original six franchise, is the only one of the six without a title. Canberra, like Adelaide, has struggled with success in finding big time players producing in the long term. Canberra did produce former ABL Player of the Year John 'Betz' Cartwright, who has gone on to be the starting 3B for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Canberra is looking to rebound from a season that saw them finish 11th, after finishing in the top four 3 of past 4 years before that. |

Team Summaries (2 of 3)
Geelong BayCats -Geelong, Victoria -3 playoff appearances, 3 championships (2025,2027,2029) -Rivals: Melbourne, Sydney Geelong, a team added with Sunshine Coast in the second round of expansion, is arguably the most successful expansion team. Reaching and winning the Claxton Shield in their second year. Amazingly they have won the series each time they finish within the top two of the table. Geelong has two title victories over Sydney. Additionly, along with Sunshine Coast, they served as the first two small market teams in the ABL. Geelong is lead by GM John Lauden and Manager Ryan Spilborghs. The duo has maximized the ABL draft fetching 2 MVPs (Al Bridge) and 2 Newcomer of the Year Winners in the draft. These two, form the most respected front office in the ABL. Many writers and media members think the BayCats may see them move onto to an Asian team with more resources despite their unprecidented success over the past 6 years. On the field. Geelong is lead by homegrown star 3B Wayne Warren. Their success will be determined by replacing former Pitcher of the Year Mike Foltynewicz and Two Time MVP OF Thomas Buckby. Gold Coast Blue Tongues -Gold Coast, Brisbane -5 playoff appearances, 2 championships (2020, 2022) -Rivals: Brisbane, Sunshine Coast Gold Coast, a 2018 round of expansion team, entered the league with Newcastle. In just their third year they made the top 2 and rattled off three straight playoff appearances, netting just one title. Overall Gold Coast was able to reach the final in 5 of 7 years (2020-2026). Gold Coast's two titles came with nearly two sets of different players. The franchise leader and superstar is Casper Barber. Gold Coast has been good at finding deals on the market, specifically with older American pitchers. Gold Coast sits in a position heading into 2030 where we could see them compete for a top four spot if they can find help in the infield, and potentially sneak into the top 2 for a shot at the final. Gold Coast sits in a similar position to archrival Brisbane. The two and Sunshine Coast helped establish baseball in Queensland with early success in the late 10's and early 20s. Melbourne Aces -Melbourne, Victoria -4 playoff appearances, 3 championshps (2018, 2024, 2026). -Rivals: Geelong, Sydney Melbourne, an original six franchise, has arguably been the evil empire of the ABL. A team that has always focused on pitching, Melbourne often spends extravagantly. Melbourne and Geelong have a fierce rivalry, as does Melbourne and Sydney. Melbourne titles have come at a large expense, although their owner has said numerous times he does not care about the cost for building championship teams and building baseball in Victoria. A strong supporter for baseball in the state, Melbourne was key to brining Geelong into the fold over other expansion bids from New South Wales and Queensland. Melbourne's team will look extremely different going into 2030 as their owner looks to overhaul a team that has a 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finish over the last three years. Newcastle Eagles -Newcastle, New South Wales -1 playoff appearance, 1 championship (2028) -Rivals: Sydney, Canberra Newcastle entered the league in 2018 with the Gold Coast Blue Tongues. 10 years later they won their first and only title over Port Adelaide. Despite their lack of postseasons, Newcaslte sits with an overall record of 360-361. Newcastle should see continued growth - along with growing pains - over the next few years as they have a top farm system with many of their established starters leaving this year in free agency. Team Summaries (3 of 3)
Perth Heat -Perth, Western Australia -1 playoff apperance, 1 championship (2019) -Rivals: Adelaide Perth, an original franchise, has had mild success. Perth's ownership has struggled financially to keep up with the other original six and has failed numerous times to coax big time Australians to the western coast. Perth has been a middling franchise failing to put it all together to finish in the top two. With some recent successes they should be a contender when their front office eventually puts all the pieces together around star LF Mike Ortner. Port Adelaide Magpies -Port Adelaide, South Australia -1 playoff appearance -Rivals: Adelaide, Newcastle Port Adelaide, commonly known as Port, is an exansion team located in Adelaide's port area. They joined the ABL in 2028 with Auckland. They reached the playoffs in their first year with a record of 35-26. They followed that up in 2029 with a 32-28 campaign. Their inclusion has upped the regional level of baseball in South Australia, and has pushed Adelaide to spend and compete each year out. Port should be a top half force as they build around 25 year old phenom Xavier Aldridge. Sunshine Coast Falcons -Sunshine Coast, Queensland -Rivals: Brisbane, Gold Coast Sunshine Coast, a 2022 expansion franchise, was started as baseball success form Gold Coast and Brisbane flooded the north Brisbane area. Sunshine Coast has yet to find its own success. With no star players and few prospects in their system, the Falcons will continue to struggle for the next few years unless owner Mick Davidson is willing to spend over a million dollars on player salaries to make an immediate impact. Sunshine Coast's plan is to build around their all-time franchise leader OF Justin Sparks. Sparks leads nearly every stat for the franchise and could be a budding star as he enters his 4th year in the league. Sydney Blue Sox -Sydney, New South Wales, -6 playoff appearances, 2 championships (2016, 2023) -Rivals: Melbourne, Geelong, Newcastle, Canberra Sydney, the last of the orginal six in this summary, is one of the better franchises in the ABL. With the largest fanbase and good financial backing they have a plethora of finals appearances. They have been a stopping place for many star players during their time in the league including Stefen Welch, Thomas Buckby, Derek DeLeo, Brad Parsons, Jing Foong, and many others. The most recent crop including Parsons and DeLeo who Sydney will build thier campaign around. Sydney, albeit no quiet being able to get the job done, has been a model of consistancy with an overall winning percentage of .555. Sydney may struggle this upcoming year to secure a top half of the ladder finish, but no one could be suprised if their front office makes the right moves to finish in the top two. Wow, Auckland, I have never seen a winning percentage so low. I wonder how long they could last. Nice explanation about the talent level.
One thing I see is how the pitching is so dominate. The League BA is so low. Is this something you set up in the settings or just how its panning out? What are your stars stats like? I love your winter meeting write up and would like to see some individual player stats of the stars from your league. Looks good. I will be following along.

I think BA is so low because hitting is a lot harder to come by in terms of draft and FA for these teams. This could be solved with a creation of a minor league. I am looking at either creating a league where each state has a team that is draftable or a true minor league affiliated group. Maybe both is the answer? Thoughts? I will look to post stats over the next year. Anyways the Auckland issue and minor league issue are things I am looking to solve. Last edited by gregisawesome13; 08-15-2016 at 09:48 PM. |

Why Fremantle? You need more "West Coast representation", there's already lots of teams over in the Eastern States, it'll be a rivalry for the Heat (every other team bar Perth and Auckland have at least one other team in their state), and WA is the spiritual home of baseball in Australia (look at all the big leaguers from WA).
Enough reasons? I can give you more if you wish. Call them the Captains (after Capt. Arthur Fremantle) and you can even keep the nautical theme.

Leaks Out of Winter Meetings
Melbourne March 11th, 2030 Leaks out of ABL Meetings A source close to the ABL commissioner said today that the ABL is approaching numerous decisions that could take place as soon as this winter. One key change will be the National Revenue contract. The ABL will see its first revenue contract on free to air tv and will have at least two national broadcasts per week. This could essentially double revenue from ABL coffers since their last deal in 2018. Expansion into new markets and increased regional rivalaries in Victoria, Queensland, and New South Wales have been key components of this deal. Our same source also said the ABL is close to reaching decision on two other issues. What has been termed the Auckland issue by writers is one of those being discussed. The ABL and Baseball Australia have reached terms with the Auckland Armada representation to put the license on hiatus, with players moving to an expansion franchise. Bids have been received from Fremantle, Hobart, Wollongong, and Gosford. Represenatives expect a decision later this week. Pundits believe Wollongong and Fremantle as realistic canidates with the loser pursing and pressing for future expansion. Lastly, the ABL and MLB are expected to co-announce a MLB- Baseball Australia State League. Teams confirmed from our source include:
These state backed teams will serve amatuer baseball and will feed into the ABL draft. With 9 teams confirmed, last second bids from Tasmania, the Capital Territory, and North Queensland are expected. The format of the competition has yet to be announced. Any other news can be found at our website or through the ABL's at theabl.com |

Fremantle
Perth March 11 Competing Fremantle Ownership Groups Submit ABL Bids Sources close to the Fremantle Dockers Chairman confirm that they have submitted a bid to the ABL to receive the expansion franchise. This team could share facilities and the name of the AFL club. A second ownership group, led by former Perth front office executive and former ABL owner and manager David Nilsson have also submitted a bid. Rumored to be pushing new facilities and a baseball specific stada may push this bid to the front of the pile. |

Fremantle
March 13th, 2030 Melbourne Commish's Office Announce License Sale Today the ABL front office approved of the sale of the Auckland License to the Fremantle Swans ownership group for an undisclosed sum. This will bring a second team to the Perth metro area and Western Australia. When asked about what this means for the future of Baseball New Zealand's involvement the ABL said the following: Baseball Australia, the ABL, and Major League Baseball will continue to help Baseball New Zealand with its investment. For this reason they have representation in the Amateur League. Auckland's history will stay with the city should they ever have another license to compete.Additionly when asked about where the commissioner sees the league growing over the next 10 years the ABL head hancho responded: Provided the quality and numbers are their, along with sponsorship and government support we could see the league grow by four more to six more in the next decade and a half. Similar to the stretch Major League Soccer went through in the 10s and early 20s we have numerous cities, ownership groups, and regions, want to make bids. In fact we are going to sit down with 6 or 8 ownership groups this season to discuss entry requirements and commitments that are essential to place a bid. Those teams wanting to submit bids will meet with our competition comittees next offseason. When asked about specifics on those bids and who they could come from the commish declined to mention specifics or than "the game continues to grow into new markets and strengthens in current major metros." Former ABL Superstar Stefan Welch, a special advisor to the league office did speculate that we'd see the usual suspects that had been shut out the past few rounds. Welch specifically mentioned Wollongong, Central Coast, North Queensland, Ipswich, Hobart, Melbourne, and Sydney, as competitive options. League analyst for SKY SPORTS says that the league could see an uptick in Marketing, Sponsorship, and TV revenue by adding a second Melbourne and Sydney Licsenses. |

AABL - No Hitter
Open opening day we have a suprise.
On the first day of the inagural AABL season. Wigley could be a superstar in the making. Jai won't be draft eligible for at least another year (must be 17 at time of the draft), so it will be fun to follow his story for MLB New Zealand. |
