The 1946 Dallas Rangers: How bad could it be?

Generally speaking, I tend to like run universes. Mainly because I am horrible when it comes to running a single team. I am terrible at drafting. I can’t manage a bullpen. I tend to overextend club budgets. Pretty much any way a team’s fortune can be destroyed, I can do it. Heck, the last time I tried this, I was fired in less than a dozen games. If the goal of OOTP was to tank, I would be the king.

But I keep trying. I keep failing, but I keep trying. This is my latest attempt to not fail.

A thanks to cephasjames for his Fictional Uniform & Logo set.
I’m still using OOTP12, FYI.

Team/Organization overlook

I usually am pretty stat based with my dynasties, but maybe if I keep closer track of my actions I can actually build a winner. I’ll be guiding the Dallas Rangers, in the AAL West.

The owner is Deon Gearin, 55 years old, he is Tolerant and a Penny-pincher.

Going into the Inaugural Draft, the Scouting Director, Henry Crichton, is Excellent Scouting Majors, Good Scouting Minors, and Decent Scouting Amateurs. He generally Favors Ability in his projections. Our draft budget is $300,000. We have the 17th pick in a Serpentine Draft.

Both my Pitching Coach (Bobby Aguillen, 45) and Hitting Coach (Brit Battershell) are pretty much Average all around. I’d like a better Trainer.

Minor League System
AAA-Kansas City Huskers (Western League)

AA-Ft. Worth Cats (Central League)

AA-Greenville Spinners (South Atlantic League)

A-St. Augustine Saints (Florida State League)

A-Stockton Ports (California League)

SA-Bremerton Bluejackets (Northwest League)

R-Boise Hawks (Pioneer League)

March 2, 1946: Start of Spring Training

So where do I find myself at the beginning of Spring Training?

Minor League System rates 20th out of 20.

Only 2 prospects make the Top 100 list. No. 56, 19 year old 3B Corie Bresett and no. 65, 22 year old P Holt Duffrey.

Positional Strength chart shows lots of issues.

And the preseason prediction pegs us at 59-97, barely better than the predicted worst team (Miami Whales, 53-103).

It is looking to be another long season for me. Let’s hope Spring Training gives me some hope or insight to better this mess.

Spring Training: First Half

The record (4-8) doesn't bother me. The inconsistent offense doesn't bug me either. But this pitching, this hurts.

Cris Pla has been disabled for about 2 weeks. As one of the few players making more than the minimum, he's all but assured a roster slot.
Scannapieco will miss about a week after the ST off day.
Rezaie, the highest paid player on my roster, is out for at least 6 months. That is alot of lost value, both in terms of innings/performance and possible trade value.
I would like to break camp with 9 or 10 pitchers, but I don't see enough pitchers warranting a slot so far.

Building from the absolute bottom with non-historical names----something I wouldn't even consider doing until I have a much better idea of how the game works.

Kudos to you, sir.

There were a couple of mistakes: The statue was me batting left-handed, and I hit right-handed, and they got the number wrong. The statue was #7, and of course I wore #9 when I played with the Cards. No big deal, I think they got a deal on the statue. It was by some guy named "Stan the Man"---Bob Uecker

Spring Training: Second Half

The record was worse (2-10) and the offense was a bit more sluggish, but I do feel better about my club than I did after the first 12 ST games. We DID improve our run differential from -39 to -22, so at least we appear to be on the right track.

I’m not foolish-I’m pretty sure this isn’t a playoff team. I’m not sure this is even a .500 team. But I am confident there are a few pieces here which can be part of a winning/playoff team.

In terms of W/L, this will probably be a lost season. Fourth place and fewer than 90 losses are my own personal goals for the club. More importantly I need to have a great June draft and identify who can be a part of championship squad. 37 of our 40 man roster players are 26 or younger. And all but three of those players are under team control through 1952. If I’m given enough time by ownership I certainly could build a winning organization. Whether I’m the person to build said organization is another question.

Owner Expectations

I have now decided on the goal for the coming season. After evaluating several factors, I have come to the conclusion that you should be able to achieve a winning season, playing better than .500 ball.

Good Luck!
Deon Gearin

He clearly feels much better about the club.

Sorting out the Opening Day roster: Pitchers

The ST stats are posted above.

Most clubs are carrying 8 pitchers, but I’m going with 10. I figure I will be more ‘modern’ in my bullpen usage and will need few more arms than most clubs. I had 15 pitchers on the ST roster (16, if you count the disabled Ryan Rezaie), even with the overall pitching issues, picking out 5 guys to send down might not be that hard.

When sorting the ST stats (ERA/AVG/OPS/WHIP/FIP) four guys were consistently in the bottom five: Victorino Majalca, Vito Mejia, Jed Chugg and Mathieu Francois. Those were easy to send down. The fifth pitcher was a bit harder to select, 3 or 4 guys made themselves candidates for AAA. I finally went with Stephen Sparacello who was hit harder than anyone left.

I actually think I may have a decent bullpen, but I’m really unsure about the starting 4. They could slot as decent 3rd/4th/spot starters, but sending these guys out every day? The pitching staff shakes out as:

Sorting out the Opening Day roster: Players

Catchers

I think I went a little overboard with drafting catchers. This is the position I usually find myself getting caught short. The two or three I usually draft is never enough. Six might be too many, but hey, catchers always get hurt right?

Having 15 roster slots for position players, I feel like I can carry 3 catchers. Two getting the bulk of the playing time (probably a platoon) with the third acting as a PH/Double Switch piece.

Lefty swinging Landen McHone was not just the best hitting catcher in ST, but he could be one of the best defensive catchers in either league.
In a perfect world, Burnell Kassick would be sent to AAA, but he refused assignment as is his right. Our club isn’t in position to eat his $13,000 salary. He at least has the defensive chops to function in the role of the 3rd catcher. And if he starts hitting, he could work his way into the right handed portion of the platoon.

The final slot, and initial platoon partner for McHone, came down between Arnold van Dam and Ansel MacClachlan. Van Dam shows a hair more power and made better contact overall. I can see these two doing a bit of back and forth during the season.

Dan Voulgaris also makes the trip to AAA, while I decide to DFA Paco Talamantez. Paco has pretty much maxed out his talent, and I don’t see him contributing much this season of the next. I’d rather have the roster slot open.

Infield

The rest of the roster was relatively easy to sort out. Houston Schaekel will hopefully be my big slugger at first, Travis Frzaier the defensive whiz with a good eye at second, Palmer Everidge and Qogyle Pfieffer platooning at short and Gilbert DeBoard as my superstar third baseman.

The only ‘real’ decision was for utility infielder. Mawney Polifrone was overall better defensively than Kendall Rieben, and provides ‘veteran’ leadership. Whatever that means. I may find I need another backup infielder later, so Rieben will probably be the first call up for that role.

Outfield

My outfielders overall were the best part of our ST offense. Six players hit over .340 during the spring, so I decided to go with that group: Amery Kaechele, Johnathon Rochte, Prendahl Wneman, Patrick Meskin, Luz Amaro and Segundo Garabito. I’m probably giving up something on right field defense with this group, but with the struggles we had offensively in ST that is a tradeoff I will make right now. The roster might be a bit lefty heavy (8 lefty, 7 righty) but in our division the other four clubs all are carrying 6/7 right handed pitchers. Going lefty heavy might not be a bad thing.

Minor Moves, Minor offers

If the charts are to be believed, Dallas has the worst farm system in baseball. We have two top 100 prospects, and one of those players is on the major league roster. This is a weak weak system. I figure it can’t hurt to pick up any half-way decent waiver claim or free agent I can get for a minor league contract. These are limited investments in possible future upside. At worst, they are organizational depth. At best, they grow into a viable bench/bullpen player.

I put in a waiver claim for Brooklyn right hander Ferny Costantino (age 27). Decent movement and OK control. Brooklyn used him as a starter in ST, which wasn’t the role for him. Back end of the bullpen guy, but with my bullpen size any time I can upgrade I need to take it. Everyone else on waivers has salary obligations I cannot assume.

I make an aggressive play in minor league Free Agents.

Right handed Pitcher Cesaro de la Parra, 23. Overwhelming stuff. Needs more movement and control, but even slight improvement could have him a bullpen ace. I also make minor league offers to 6 other pitchers. Four of them are probably undervalued as they have lower stamina (R Elys Preece, 20; R Rickey Bendure, 20; R Yoshimatsu Otsuji, 25, R Kain Petrie, 18). The other two (R Abbott Zamloch, 26 and R Kody Moskau, 22) could be a solid spot starter types.

I find 4 position players worth taking a flyer on. OF Valar Forestieri, 24; IN Ozzy Albany, 29; OF Lew Naaktfeboren, 25, and IN Angelo Colorada, 25 all fit the same profile. Good contract, no homerun power, pretty good defense and can run a little. All are probably are end of the bench guys at their best.

April 3, Minor Moves

Four of my five ‘full season’ minor league clubs start their season tomorrow. Stockton begins their season on the 8th. Time to move some bodies around to make sure we have full rosters.

All of the players I offered minor league contracts to accepted and are awaiting assignment. I am also awarded my wavier claim of P Ferny Constantin.

Minor league rosters vex me more than the Major League one. It isn’t about building the best team necessarily, but about slotting guys at the right place for development. Fortunately or unfortunately I’m going to have to lean hard on the Minor League System Report to make some decisions.

I have very few ‘hard and fast’ philosophies about running minor league system, but one I do have is this: if you are over thirty and not ready or overmatched at AAA, you are not going to contribute to a winning club. There are occasional exceptions: players coming back from injuries for example, but none the trio I have at Kansas City meet that qualification.

Otherwise, I my goal was to get the “Not ready for Level” and “Probably overmatched at Level” slotted ‘properly’. Moving players back and forth, trying to get as level appropriate as possible. Working top down, as it were.

AAA was easy enough. Seven of the minor league signees and my waiver pick up all fit were slotted at AAA. That doesn’t speak well of my drafting ability, but hey, I did a decent job of finding pieces from the scrapheap.

I have two AA clubs, Ft. Worth and Greenville. Whether by design or chance, Ft. Worth came together faster and more ‘complete’ than Greenville.

After Ft. Worth, there isn’t much to choose from. I could shift players between AA Greenville and A St. Augustine/Stockton, but it would between fringe minor leaguers. Players who are not quite ready for the AA, but maybe just a hair better than a Class A player. At this level, it does not seem like there would be much point into trying shift players back and forth. To round out a St. A and Stockton’s rosters I did throw out a few minor league contract offers. Players I don’t expect to contribute long-term, but needed to complete teams.

I do have a grouping of players currently assigned at Short A Bremerton who may or may not have down the road value. At least when I get to the June draft I don’t have to scramble to find every player needed for the SA and R levels.

#52 prospect 3B Corie Bresett is currently assigned to Class A Stockton.
