The ongoing history of the Indiana Racers (2149-beyond)
The Indiana Racers moved to Indianapolis from Philadelphia in 2161, the original franchise had moved all over the place before ending up in Indy. Despite their arrival, the team never won a pennant. For the 350th season of my ongoing league, I'm diving back into the league as an actual player rather than existing only in god mode. One of the things I never do is actually do game-by-game recaps or anything like that. I've always found playing that way a bit of a slog, but for this particular dynasty, I'm going to attempt to play out the season. I probably won't play out games specifically or manage much, I don't find that necessarily as much fun though I might eventually give that a whirl. The idea here is to build a new history with the Racers. I actually recreated the franchise starting this year, mostly so that we could keep track of the franchise's statistics over time & give them a consistent history without having to mine through the previous iterations of the old club. I think watching games in other leagues has made me more interested in the interplay and drama you get from watching seasons play out, but I reserve the right to do what I want. Mostly, I want to create an immersive story through gameplay with one team that I can consistently come back to. So we'll see if I can manage it with these Racers and create a history and legacy that we'll remember over time. Come with me on this journey will ya? |

2149: 78-84 (4th Place, AL Central)
For the second straight year, the Chicago Rogues met the Chicago Blue Collars in the Kerouac Cup Series. But this time, the Blue Collars swept the Rogues in the North/South battle for citywide -- and baseball -- supremacy. In the NL East, Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia all tied for first place. Chicago -- the team that won the season series over both -- won a tiebreaker to claim the division crown en route to the whole title, their 9th in franchise history dating back to 1800. |

2150: In the 351st season of ABA baseball, the Racers finish 87-77 after playing two regular season tiebreakers to figure out the NL Wild Card spots after Worcester, New York Knights and the Indiana Racers tied with 2 spots. After dropping the first game at home to New York, the Racers went to Worcester and took on the Bravehearts where they lost again and will miss the post-season for the 5th consecutive year.
In the 351st Kerouac Cup Series, the upstart Hollywood Oscars -- a 3rd year expansion club -- knocked off the three-time defending NL champs and reigning champions Chicago Blue Collars in seven games to win their first-ever title. The Oscars joined the NL when the former Hollywood Stars moved to Pittsburgh three years ago. |

2151 (pre-season): The Indiana Racers were realigned to the AL East for the 2151 season, swapping with the Detroit Pontiacs. The Minnesota Chiefs moved to Dallas and became the Dallas Submarines, giving Texas four teams (El Paso, Dallas, Houston & San Antonio)
The Worcester Bravehearts folded and were replaced by an expansion team, the St. Paul Loons. |

To help me immerse in the league faster, I'm going to do a simple fantasy league style setup.
It's a hybrid of Guy Ramsey's Langford League where you have a six-man roster of players who accumulate home runs and that's it and a "Wins" League, where you pick a roster of 5-6 teams in the majors and all you do is count their wins for whatever period of time we're measuring. I realize I have no one to play against, but for this first year that probably doesn't matter since my main purpose is just to get more familiar with the teams, their rosters and to start caring about the individual games rather than just simming seasons. Here's the season preview for 2151 by team standings. The Racers are back in the NL where they played up until a few years ago. It appears the move might be just what the doctor ordered for a team that narrowly missed the playoffs last year.

The Indiana Racers have high hopes heading into the '51 season. Ownership spent a bushel of money and the Racers enter Opening Day somehow with the second highest payroll in baseball. With quality players on both offense and defense, the Racers are expecting to return to the post-season for the first time in seven years and when they do, the idea is they'll be gunning for a title. |

Here's a link to the score spreadsheet. There are two games happening at once: - Langford League: Here the teams get 5 players for the whole season, so you have to choose carefully. You get 1 point for each home run they hit. Post-season home runs are worth 2 (LDS) 3 (LCS) and 4 (KCS) points each. Wild Card series HRs count like regular season ones. - Wins League: In the Wins League, we pick 6 teams from the 36 teams in the bigs and try to construct the roster that scores the most points at the end of the year. The hitch is, at mid-season, I pick one team as my "flip" team meaning their losses become your win total for the year at the end of the year. This makes picking a bad team a strategic choice. My competition? I'll create six different teams, but one team will be my designated team. We'll draft them much like real life and I won't get any substantial advantages. The main house rule in Langford is teams can make changes once a week to their roster, but I will not be allowed to do that. My only change will be at mid-season and then I'm stuck with the same team until September 1st when everyone's roster locks for the rest of the year. If nothing else, playing this way will make it a lot easier to get acquainted with the league which is the goal and it should make following games a bit more interesting. I used random.org list randomizer to do the draft order. I'm going 3rd in the Wins league and 5th in Langford. Last edited by darkcloud4579; 10-14-2016 at 09:22 PM. |

Okay so my fantasy roster is comprised of six teams. At mid-season (so right now) one of those teams becomes my "flip" team and their losses get credited as wins, so basically you root for them to lose.

At Mid-season, I'm in 3rd place in the standings. I have home runs & team wins worth the same amount ($5000)
I'll highlight my team and talk about players in a future post. At mid-season, the Racers are 2.5 games out of the NL East lead, but have a firm grip (+8) on one of the NL Wild Cards. 2151 MID-SEASON STANDINGS Code:

Knights 2-1 With the Racers out of the post-season, my plan is to assume control this off-season and gut the roster that's way too expensive for as underperforming as they've been this year. I mean, at least they made the playoffs but I would have expected better/more from them tbh. In the 352nd Kerouac Cup Series, the Chicago Rogues make their 3rd appearance in 4 seasons and ensure a Chicago team is in the Final for the 4th straight year. In '48 and '49, Chicago's two teams - the Blue Collars and Rogues -- faced off and split titles in each year. In '50, Hollywood knocked off the Blue Collars. Now, the Rogues get their turn. On the NL side, the New York Gothams return to the Fall Classic after eight years out of the post-season, seeking their first title in 46 years. |

2152 season
Off-season story is the Racers don't exactly have a ton of money with a Top 10 payroll already in tow. Rather than make huge moves to change things, we're just going to run the '52 season with minor moves and keep the team together for another year seeing if what we have can work and how far it takes us.

INDIANA RACERS
DIVISION TITLES: 2137, 2139 (NL South) WILD CARD: 2117, 2126, 2140, 2144 (NL) 2152 INDIANA RACERS After an off-season of retooling, the Racers are hoping this is the year they get over the hump. Last year, they lost in the Wild Card Series. Offensively, the tea brings back its core starters in OFs Ken Yanagi, Jaylen Hudson and Anders Rosenkrantz to compose the best outfield in baseball. 18-game winner Dwayne Ryan returns as the team's staff ace. AFTERMATH Because I'm only playing off-seasons only, the regular season isn't on me. I can't make any moves, I just go into fan mode which is very difficult but makes for a more reward sim and I can play a lot faster that way. Out of the chute, Dylan Clark and Huai-yi Ying were among the top hitters in baseball and by the end of April, the Racers sprinted to a 4 game lead in the NL East on the strength of their offensive powers. The Racers ran away with the NL East, as predicted, we ended August with a 15 game lead in the division, leaving the battle there to determine who would play for a wild card. It's only the third division title in Racers franchise history dating back to 2117 when the team first moved to Indianapolis. FINISH: 104-57, 1st place, NL East PLAYOFFS: The top seed Racers swept the Chicago Blue Collars, two years removed from a title in the Division Series to setup a date with the West Virginia Alleghenies in the NLCS. West Virgina has never won a title, dating back 36 seasons. But they were no match for the Racers and in the 353rd Kerouac Cup Series, the Eau Claire Paws, seeking their 10th title after a 58-year drought take on the Indiana Racers who won their first pennant in franchise history. In a hard fought nine-game battle, the Racers knocked off the Paws and won their first title in club history. |
