Field Of Dreams - Historical Best of 7
I am sure if every baseball player who ever played the game, alive or gone, could get another chance at an atbat, a defensive play, or a season, they would jump at the chance. The game gives us a special feeling of youth and hope, and thats a great part of the joy of OOTP, bringing the names and the teams back to try again. So in my mind I see the baseball Gods picking two teams out of many and giving them the chance to play again. Kind of a field of dreams that I am sure every player would jump at the chance at. Here is to W.P. Kinsella, who passed away just a few weeks ago. I also love the randomness of any match up and being able to pick a team from history and actually study it to see how good or bad they really were. Most of the time that is what I do on my free time, just pick two teams randomly and play out a series, I might as well post the results. In this thread I will simply take every team in MLB history and randomly pick two for seven games series. We may see upsets or great performances, but the matchups should be interesting in any event. I will keep track of the winners and theoretically I will do something with the winners and keep playing but lets get started and see what happens. All series will be best of seven, and stats, previews, recaps as well as MVP's will be posted. Maybe I will also add some personality along the way. Here is a list of winning teams so far: 1. 2001 Minnesota Twins 2. 1986 San Francisco Giants 3. 1919 Washington Senators 4. 1948 Pittsburgh Pirates 5. 1989 Kansas City Royals 6. 1976 Texas Rangers Last edited by Nick Soulis; 12-12-2016 at 07:54 PM. |

2001 Minnesota Twins (85-77) vs 1956 Chicago Cubs (60-94) 2001 Minnesota Twins Record: 85-77 2nd in AL Central Manager: Tom Kelly Home Park: Metrodome Run differential: 771-766 (+5) WAR Leader: Joe Mays (6.6) 1956 Chicago Cubs Record: 60-94 8th in National League Manager: Stan Hack Home Park: Wrigley Field Run differential: 597-708 WAR Leader: Ernie Banks (5.3) Minute With the Managers Stan Hack: "I don't think our pitching is all that bad and we should be able to stay in ballgames. However this whole playing baseball inside thing...I really don't know about that." Tom Kelly: This is my final season as manager and I really think we have a good group of guys. Keep your eye on this David Ortiz kid for us, he brings a lot of energy to the field. Obviously we need to limit the damage of Ernie Banks and Monte Irwin." Predictions Tom Verducci "Twins in 5. I don't really see how the Cubs are going to be able to score enough runs to win." Peter Gammons "Twins in a sweep. Although LaTroy Hawkins makes me nervous as a closer, the Cubs just do not have enough to threaten." |

MIENTKIEWICZ WALK OFF GIVES TWINS GAME 1
The Minnesota 2001 Twins took the first game of the Series in dramatic fashion today, topping the Chicago 1956 Cubs 5-4 in an extra-inning walk-off win. Twins designated hitter David Ortiz was selected player of the game, as he was 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 walks. The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz came to bat in the bottom of the tenth. Facing Chicago 1956 pitcher Turk Lown, he hit a 1-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Minnesota 2001 on top, 5-4. The Cubs had 17 hits in the game but stranded 23 men on base and blew the lead in the 9th inning on a Torri Hunter single with two outs. "I'll probably toss and turn tonight," manager Stan Hack said following the tough loss. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 10-18-2016 at 03:44 PM. |

Twins Out Hit Again; Come From Behind To Take Game 2
Despite a great performance by Chicago 1956 shortstop Ernie Banks, the Minnesota 2001 Twins defeated the Cubs by the score of 5-4 at Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome today. Banks was 3 for 4 with a home run and a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once to earn player of the game honors, but could not prevent the Twins from moving one game closer to the winning the Series. Minnesota 2001 now leads the series 2-0. Had Cristian Guzman not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Guzman hit a 2-run double. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Twins. "We're one game closer to our goal," Tom Kelly said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday, October 4th, 2001 at Wrigley Field. Slated to start are Joe Mays for Minnesota 2001 and Don Kaiser for Chicago 1956. |

Twins One Step Away From Sweeping Cubbies
The Minnesota 2001 Twins moved to within one game of the moving on today, downing the Chicago 1956 Cubs on the road at Wrigley Field by a score of 6-4. Twins right-hander Joe Mays was named player of the game after a strong outing in which he threw 7 innings of 6-hit ball. The win gives the Twins a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 series. Everygame has been a close one up to this point but the Cubs just cant win the games late. Ernie Banks is a red hot 9 for 14 in the three games played. The Twins beat the Cubs in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out home run Brian Buchanan produced in the top of the ninth. Batting against Chicago 1956 pitcher Jim Brosnan, Buchanan gave his team a 6-4 lead when he hit a 2-run home run. "We cashed in when we had the chance," said Tom Kelly. . Game 4 is scheduled for Friday, October 5th, 2001 at Wrigley Field. Slated to start are Eric Milton for the Twins and Warren Hacker for the Cubs. |

Koskie Leads Easy Sweep of Cubs
In the end it was the 2001 Minnesota Twins who fulfilled the expectations and made it look easy when it mattered sweeping the lowly 1956 Chicago Cubs in four straight games. The culmination came at Wrigley Field where Corey Koskie went 3-4 including a three run home run to lead the visitors to a 5-2 win. Eric Milton got the win with a decent performance on the mound while Eddie Gaurdado got his second save of the season as Tom Kelly stayed away from LaTroy Hawkins. The Cubs all series were not able to hold leads and take advantage of a subpar Twins pen. The talent level of the Twins defense also a factor as they never gave away extra outs and made the plays both on grass and turf. "We believe in ourselves and showed it out there" said Torri Hunter who hit .375 in the series and patrolled center field."Confidence is half the battle, i think we had them beat before the first pitch." Series stats and recap will follow shortly. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 10-19-2016 at 05:43 PM. |

1986 San Francisco Giants (83-79) vs 1933 Brooklyn Dodgers (65-88) 1986 San Francisco Giants Record: 83-79 3rd in NL West Manager: Roger Craig Ball Park: Candlestick Park Run Differential: 698-619 (+80) WAR Leader: Chili Davis (4.1 WAR) 1933 Brooklyn Dodgers Record: 65-88 6th in National League Manager: Max Carey Ball Park: Ebbets Field Run Differential: 617-692 (-75) WAR Leader: Van Mungo (5.0 WAR) Minute With The Managers Roger Craig - "There wont be many home runs in this series so we may need to adapt to their style of play. Our pitchers need to adjust and hold base runners well. Its a different approach for us. Max Carey - "I think both home parks are unique and will be an advantage for the home team. With that said, pitching will win or lose this series. We need to take one of the first two on the road." Predictions Tom Verducci - Giants in five. Will Clark should have a great series and the Dodger's pitchers should be able to get away with mistakes. Peter Gammons - The Giants will win but I think the Dodgers could put up a fight and steal some games at Ebbets Field where the likes of Hack Wilson could excel. I see it going six. |

More Giant Pitching Props Favorites to 2-0 Lead
With starter Mike LaCoss leading the charge, the San Francisco 1986 Giants defeated the Brooklyn 1933 Dodgers, 4-1, in Game 2 of the World Series today. The right-hander threw 7 innings of 5-hit ball at Candlestick Park to help San Francisco 1986 take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Giants Find A Way And Teeter Dodgers
Riding the 3-hit performance of third baseman Chris Brown, the San Francisco 1986 Giants got a road win against the Brooklyn 1933 Dodgers, 7-6, in Game 4 of the World Series today. Brown went 3 for 5 with 3 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for the Giants, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 1. That made the score 7-6, in favor of the Giants. "It wasn't our best performance," said Leonard, "but a win in this series is nothing to sniff at." Back To The Bay; Dodgers Stay Alive
The Brooklyn 1933 Dodgers got a strong game from starter Ownie Carroll, but it was some clutch hitting that ultimately delivered the win. The Dodgers took the 6-5 win over the San Francisco 1986 Giants in Game 5 of the World Series in a 9th inning walk-off today. The win capped off a fine outing for the right-handed Carroll, who was named player of the game. Carroll threw 7 innings allowing 3 runs in the win, which allowed the Dodgers to narrow their deficit to 2-3 in the best-of-7 series. Joe Stripp was the walk-off hero for Brooklyn 1933. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Dodgers third baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home. That makes it two walk off wins in three games at Ebbets Field and the underdog Dodgers are starting to put the pressure on. "It's great when the crowd gets into it," Stripp said. Game 6 is set to be played on Wednesday, October 8th, 1986 at Candlestick Park. Slated to start are Boom-Boom Beck for the Dodgers and Mike LaCoss for the Giants. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 10-26-2016 at 05:44 PM. |

Giants Kick Dodgers Loose
It took six games and some tight late drama but in the end the better team finish as the victors. The 1986 Giants showed their vulnrabilities in this series especially in their bullpen, but the won their third straight game at Candlestick Park 11-6 to win the series in 6. Candy Maldonado hit a three run home run late, maybe the biggest blow of the series, to turn around another tight game. Chili Davis capped a good series with 3 RBI of his own and speedy Dan Gladden went 3-3 with 3 runs scored. "It has been a bit frustrating" said Gladden who hit .346 in the series after the game "but we were due to have a break out like you saw tonight" The Dodgers did impress many with their fighting spirit through the series but Boom Boom Beck again did more talking than pitching in the final game and the lack of a good arm in the pen collapsed in on them. Series MVP and stats on the series to follow. |

Still we cant take anyone for granted. There is no doubt we plan on throwing Walter Johnson in there at any opportunity" John Russell - "There is not pressure on us and we have to play that way. Records mean nothing now, all we need is 4 wins. Pitching is obviously our challenge and we will be running and manufacturing runs. We can get scrappy and we will show that." Predictions Tom Verducci - "Obviously not a great matchup that the baseball Gods have given us here. Still I will take Walter Johnson in his prime to dominate this series. Washinghton in five." Peter Gammons - "Who doesn't want to see the Big Train pitch? I actually like the Pirates to put up a tough fight and take this series to seven games before losing. Look, they are both poor, so it should in my book be close." |
