The Portland Beavers, est. 2001

Okay, here we go with the second try of the Beavers as an expansion team. My first try, it was too easy to build a good team and so I am restarting and playing with stiffer house rules. Also I took the opportunity to change some of the things about playing the default MLB setup that I found I really could not tolerate, even though I thought I could.

Here is the setup. If something is not mentioned, then it is left at the default settings (or I forgot to mention it....)

1) No DH. Not in the American League and not in the minors.
2) No Wild Card slots in the playoffs. Only division winners need apply. To accomplish this, instead of eliminating Tampa Bay and Arizona as I had done in the first go round to make room for the expansion teams, I expanded MLB to 32 teams and made four 8-team divisions. Montreal is not an expansion team this time, but is one of the established franchises and Washington will be the expansion team along with the Portland Beavers. The Expos will stay in the National League and Washington will be in the AL. Since the Nationals would be a bit of a misnomer for an American League team and Americans is a bit jingoistic, they will be called by the traditional name of Senators. Also, since with this alignment, there is no reason for Houston and Milwaukee to swap leagues, they will not and Houston is in the NL and Milwaukee in the AL.
3) No International free agents, amateur or established. MLB will go to a world-wide draft (30 rounds), though scouts can still discover players not registered for the draft. The setting for discoveries has been set to "Few". The biggest reason for this is because half the players in the MLB under the default setup were foreigners and I want more American players. Also, signing these free agents seemed not to be too difficult in competition with the A.I.
4) Ratings are set to 1-10 for everything with "Show Ratings > Max" set to yes and stars are used for overall ratings with "Show Potential < Actual" set to no.
5) Relative ratings are turned on and "Overall rating based on all players, not positions" is checked.
6) "GM-only users (me) are always in control of lineups (legacy-mode)" is turned on.
7) Storylines is turned off
8) Injury rating is hidden. Why this is not the default setting is beyond me. BTW, injuries are set to Normal, the default, this time, as the higher rating made keeping you minor league teams stocked a pain in the patooty.
9) Nicknames are turned off.
10) The All-Star Game has no bearing on the World Series.
11) Default roster settings and Strategic Tendencies settings are used, but the league totals and modifiers have been adjusted to give a more 1980's look to the stats. A bit more offense, though, than a strict interpretation of a 1980's environment would have. But starting pitchers and relievers will behave as modern era pitchers. Occasionally, however, in this setup, which I have used often over the years, pitchers will get significantly more than 250 IP, but it is very rare and a pitcher needs to have a very high END rating and stay injury free. IP leaders are usually about what they are currently in real life. The league should hit between .255-.260 most of the time with the ERA around 3.80. We won't have 40 HR men every year, but 50 is sometimes possible. I have never seen 60 with this setup, but I have seen a few close calls. The league will steal a lot more bases than modern times, but not as many as they actually did back in the 80's. The settings are in stone and the league will wander around those numbers on its own. Sometimes we will have more offense and sometimes more pitching. The minors, by the way, all use the same settings as the majors.
11) The minimum salary has been set to $500K just to make it a nice round number.
12) Player origins were set on a weighted average of each decade from the 1960's to 2000's with the 80's having the most impact.
11) Budgets and markets were set based on the team's average payroll from 2001-2015. Montreal had their budget set to $95 million (it is $110 million now). Washington was given $150 million budget as an expansion team and thus signed some good free agents and are a much better team than the Portland Beavers, though they still are picked to finish in last place in their division. The Beavers were given an $85 million budget, but my owner slashed $10 million off it it in the Spring (the b**tard). We thus have more than $10 million less than any other team....
12) Park factors were set to be realistic and are based on current stadiums and not the 1980's.
13) In the expansion draft, each team was allowed to protect 35 players, which is a lot more than in real life expansion drafts. But with realistic numbers there are too many good players left unprotected. The Beavers signed some free agents and got a few players in the draft that will be of use someday. We look like a typical expansion team in my eyes and will be struggling to avoid 100 losses, but we will NOT match the Mets for their futility.
14) I did not allow Washington and Portland to participate in any amateur drafts prior to 2001 this time. Our minor league teams below AA are going to really stink it up for a few years.
15) Also, I am using my 1970's name set. I got real tired real quick of all the Cody's and Jared's and Ryan's and other soap opera names that permeate modern baseball (and Society at large). Give me my Steve's and Jeff's and Bob's and Jerry's! (or Ben and Jerry's, but I am not allowed to eat that anymore....)

House Rules:
1) No waiver claims allowed by Portland. We can and will lose players to waiver claims.
2) No free agents can be offered a minor league contract unless they have 1 star of potential or less according to my scout. This is the reason for the restart. It is just too easy to sign decent prospects lying around and then trade them. No team in real life has this avenue to free resources and so neither will the Beavers. In my first play-through, I thought, "Well, my scout just must be on dope and these guys really aren't any good and won't ever become real ballplayers." And that may be true (I did not play long enough to study the issue), but the fact is that if my scout was on dope, then so were some A.I. GM's who coveted these players in trades (when they could have signed them for free themselves at any time. One player I used in a trade because the opposing GM valued him had been in the FA pool for a year and a half....).
3) Any free agents signed to a major league contract cannot be traded until they have been on the roster during a World Series (whether we are in it or not). Thus free agents signed in November of 2001 cannot be traded until after the World Series in 2002. Free agents signed during the regular season before the trading deadline can be traded after that year's World Series; those signed in August or later must wait until 2 World Series have passed before they can be traded. Free agents can be released or waived, however, without restriction, except for the normal monetary penalties (and ticking off the players and their agents).

That's it, I think. I have a few other rules that I play by, but they are not really House Rules in the sense that they were created to make the game harder. For instance, the personality ratings matter a lot to me. I only want fine upstanding young men representing the Portland Beavers. Now, in the game, they do not really have that large of an impact, even if your team is all ticked off at each other. And players who are dumb as rocks and lazy as can be can still win MVPs and Cy Youngs. But they do make a little difference and they add a lot to my role-playing. My personal rule is that no player can have a "Very Low" rating in anything other than Greed, which cannot be "Very High". Also, a player cannot have a "Low" rating in any two categories, other than Greed ("High" is not a disqualifier here, mostly because it is harder to scan for with your eye). So, the Beavers can tolerate a player who is a bit lazy or a bit dumb, but not both. P.S. I forgot to mention that "Desire for a Wiinner" is NOT used to disqualify anyone for any reason.

Once again, the league was created in 1975 and then simmed to the end of 2000 to get rid of all initially created players. I then added Portland and Washington to the league and held an expansion draft. Once I got to Spring Training 2001 I erased all League history and all the stats, though I saved them to refer to occasionally for reports in the thread.

One difference this time is that I lucked out and got a great scout! However, without the international free agents, I really do not need a scout at all...

So here we go....

Vice President Ron Hensley was the GM for the Dodgers from 1985 to 1989. They won two division titles under his watch, winning 108 games in 1988, but lost 95 games in 1989 and he was let go. From 1990 to 2000 he was the GM for the Texas Rangers, winning 4 division titles in 11 seasons, with 102 wins in 1993. They had a winning season in each of the first 10 years of his tenure, but when they fell below .500 last year, he was fired. None of his teams made it to the World Series.

Bobby Crider has not managed before, in the majors or the minors, but I am confident of his abilities and I know his temperament will not ever embarrass the organization. Through Spring Training, he has made a favorable impression on the great majority of our players, with one notable exception, but no one can make everyone happy all the time.

Eddie Henderson was the Scouting Director for the Oakland A's from 1991 to 1998. They were mostly terrible during that time, but he earned an outstanding reputation among his peers.

Octavio Zamarripa, pitching coach for Lexington, and Moose Connelly, manager for Great Falls, are the only coaches in our system who had significant major league careers as a players. Zamarripa won 87 games as a pitcher in 11 seasons, from 1975 to 1985 (97 L). In his best season, he won 17 games for the Mets in 1977. Connelly was an outfielder who hit .266 in 11 seasons, 1978 to 1988, all for the Cardinals. He had 952 career hits and 50 home runs and stole 219 bases. Moose can run!

Hitting Coach Ed Morgan of Hillsboro played 16 seasons in the minors without ever getting a call to the show.

Dec 5 - CF Scott Setta (34 R) $900K for 1 year
Setta was the 2nd overall pick in the 1986 June draft by the Philadelphia Phillies and got a $7.39 million bonus. He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1989, batting .309 with 31 HR and 95 RBIs. He finished 2nd in the MVP voting that season, the first of four straight seasons of finishing in the top three in the balloting, but never did win the award. He is an 8-time All-Star and 5-time Silver Slugger Award winner. Unfortunately, those days are all behind him as since he has hit 30 years of age, injuries have devastated his abilities. He started 159 games in 1997, when he turned 30, but has only started 135 games total in the three seasons since. Last season, with the White Sox and Mariners, he hit .182 in 116 AB. We are not expecting him to be much of a contributor, but he is a popular star and his signing will excite our fan base. Plus, you never know, he might find the Fountain of Youth somewhere and it has been slim pickings for center fielders in the free agent market and in the Expansion Draft.

Dec. 11 - LF Frank Wiginton (30 S) $4 million per season for 3 years
Wiginton was a 1st round pick of the Padres in 1992 (22nd overall). His best season was 1998 when he hit .303 with 12 HR and 69 RBIs in 422 AB for Houston with an .835 OPS. Last year, he hit .279 with 6 HR and 33 RBI in 290 AB with a .726 OPS. He stole 13 bases. We expect him to be our starting left fielder and bat at or near the top of the lineup.

Dec. 12 - P Ron Rau (29 R) $3.7 million per season for 2 years
Rau was a 4th round pick in the June draft of 1993 by the Royals. He was a minor league free agent. He has spent parts of the last 4 seasons with Kansas City, pitching well in relief when given the opportunity. He has only won 1 game in the majors against 2 defeats and has a 2.72 ERA in 46.1 IP. We expect him to make our starting rotation, but will probably not be in line for the Cy Young award.

Dec. 12 - 3B Tim DePriest (26 R) $550K for 1 season
DePriest was drafted by the White Sox in 1993 in the 24th round. He was released by them and also by Oakland last year. He has never played above AA, where he hit .263 with a .653 OPS last season. His signing will NOT excite our fan base. We expect him to play at Indianapolis and only play for Portland to fill in for injuries.

Dec. 12 - RF Eddie Cabrales (31 R) $590K for 1 season
Cabrales was drafted in the 5th round of the June draft in 1991 by the Texas Rangers. He has spent parts of the last three seasons in the majors, batting .153 in 190 AB. He only batted .256 with a .698 OPS in AAA last season, but hit over .300 each of the three previous seasons with an OPS ranging from .779 to .845. He has stolen 129 bases and has 42 triples in his 4 seasons in AAA. He will be in AAA for us, providing injury protection.

Dec. 12 - 1B Rick Deveney (28 L) $590K for 1 season
Deveney was selected in the 27th round of the June 1991 draft by the Houston Astros. In 95 major league AB the past 2 seasons, he has batted .232 with a .721 OPS. He has a little power and is very patient at the plate. In the last 3 seasons at AAA, he has 411 AB with 16 HR and 61 RBI and 106 BB and 59 SO for an OPS of .875. He will be given an opportunity to win the first base job and failing that, should at least be a left-handed bat off the bench for us in 2001.

Dec. 12 - 3B Joe Hartin (31 R) $600K for 1 season
Hartin was a 3rd round pick of the Angels in 1990. In 1999, he was the Orioles starting 2B, but made 20 errors in 99 starts. He is not a good 2B, but he IS a good 3B, where in 61 major league games, his EFF rating is 1.020 and he has a +2.9 ZR. He hit .270 with 8 HR and 46 RBI in 407 AB for Baltimore in 1999 with an ops of .716. Last year, in AAA, he hit .259 with an .679 OPS. He will be given a chance to win the 3B job.

Dec. 12 - SS Randy Penn (32 L) $700K for 1 season
Penn was an 11th round pick in 1989 by Oakland. An 8-year MLB veteran, he has a career BA of .251 with a .618 OPS. He has stolen 203 bases in his career with a high of 43 in 1997. Last year, he was in the minors for the entire season and hit .263 in AAA with a .692 OPS and 28 SB. He is a solid defender with a career EFF rating of 1.015 at SS and 1.033 at 2B. He will likely be our Opening Day shortstop.

Dec. 12 - 2B Rickey Clayton (31 R) $740K for 1 season
Clayton was drafted in the 6th round in 1988 by Pittsburgh where he has played all 8 of his previous major league seasons. He is a 2-time Gold Glove winner at 2B (1996 and 1997). Only a .241 average for his career, but he has a little pop with a high of 10 HR in 1998 and stole 26 bases his rookie year, but only 1 last season. He had 169 AB last year and hit .237 with a .662 OPS. He will be our backup infielder, barring injury.

Dec. 12 - 2B Fred Pariseau (31 R) $6.6 million for 1 year with a $750K bonus for 550 PA
Pariseau was a Supplemental Round pick (43rd overall) in 1988 by the Giants where he has played all 9 years of his MLB career. He is also a 2-time Gold Glove winner at 2B (1992 and 1993). He was the runner up for Rookie of the Year in 1992. In 1995 he hit .260 with 23 HR and 108 RBI. He has batted .262 in his career with 121 HR and a .751 OPS. For the past two seasons, he has been a $15 million bench player for the Giants. Last year, he hit .296 with an .800 OPS in 125 AB. He is not a threat to steal, with only 21 SB in his career. We expect him to be our cleanup hitter and he will be the highest paid player on the team.

Dec. 12 - CF Rich Babbin (36 L) $4.4 million for 1 season with a $280K bonus for 550 PA
Babbin was the 4th player selected in the June draft of 1986 by the Royals. He got a bonus of $6.4 million. He is a 5-time All-Star and 4-time Silver Slugger Award winner and won a Gold Glove in 1991. He is a 13-year veteran and has hit .259 with 173 HR and 861 RBI and 226 SB with a .753 OPS. He had 100 RBI or more in each season from 1991 to 1993, leading the American League with 119 in 1992, but not in 1993 when he had 120. Twice, he has finished 3rd in the MVP voting. He has 10 career Grand Slams. In June of 1992, he signed a 6-year $160.2 million contract extension with Kansas City. But after hitting 26 HR with 120 RBI in 1993, he only hit 11 HR and 60 RBI in 490 AB in 1994. In 1997 and 1998 he hit 4 home runs total with a .180 average. In 1999, for Boston, he started half the season and hit .228 with 6 HR and 29 RBI in 289 AB. Last season, though, after starting out 3 for 35 with the White Sox, he was released and signed with the Angels where he enjoyed a rejuvenation of sorts hitting 14 HR in 234 AB with a .782 OPS. We hope the rejuvenation continues and he can bat 5th for us this year. As I said before, we did not have a lot of options for acquiring a center fielder, so we must make do with what we can find. But he has name recognition with our fans and if he hits as well as he did last season, we will be very happy.

Dec. 20 - P Edmondo Buenaventura (31 R) $810K for 1 season
Buenaventura was a Supplemental Round pick (34th overall) by Boston in 1990, but did not sign. In 1991, the Indians took him in the 2nd round and he signed with them. In 8 major league seasons, he is 39-57 with a 4.00 ERA. Last season with the Mariners he pitched almost exclusively in relief (1 start) and had a 3.41 ERA in 74 IP. We expect him to be in our rotation. Did you know that Ventura, California is officially named the city of San Buenaventura? Me neither, but it is. Edmondo is not from there, though; he is from Venezuela, but it has been his "good fortune" to sign with the Beavers!

Dec. 25 - C John McIvor (30 R) $2.4 million per season for 2 years
McIvor was drafted in 6th round in 1993 by Arizona. In parts of 4 seasons in the majors, he has batted .255 with a .694 OPS in 106 AB. Last year in AAA, he hit .307 with a .784 OPS. He is a good receiver and we expect him to be our backup backstop this year. Merry Christmas, John!

Dec. 27 - C Masanori Ishii (32 R) $2.4 million per season for 2 years
Ishii was drafted in the 13th round in 1989 by Texas. In parts of 3 major league seasons, he has hit .247 with a .754 OPS in 89 AB. Last year in AAA, he hit .303 with 8 HR and 46 RBI and an .814 OPS in 346 AB. We expect him to be our starting catcher. He is a good receiver, too, though not quite as good as McIvor, but he looks like the better hitter.

Dec. 28 - P Neville Carter (31 R) $800K for 1 season
Carter was a 1st round pick (18th overall) by the Dodgers in 1988. He got a bonus of $1.45 million. In 9 major league seasons, he is 37-34 with 75 SV and a 3.83 ERA. He had 28 SV for Toronto with 10 wins and an ERA of 2.93 in his best season, 1994. Last year, for Tampa bay, he was 5-2 with 2 SV and 6 GS and had a 3.17 ERA in 65.1 IP. He will be one of our late inning options, for certain. Whether he is the #1 option or not is yet to be determined. I think he only signed with us because he wants to be a starter and thinks it will be easier to break into our rotation, but we have no plans to do that.

2001
Jan. 8 - P Greg Richey (32 R) $3.6 million for 1 season
Richey was drafted in the 16th round in 1987 by Baltimore. In 7 major league seasons, he is 24-23 with 24 SV and a 3.53 ERA. He has never started a game and will not do so for us. Last year with Milwaukee, he was 2-2 with a 4.42 ERA and 2 SV in 79.1 IP. He expects to be our closer, but I told him that we will not run bullpens in Portland quite like what he is used to and no one will be designated as the closer. But he will definitely be one of our late game options, at least until he proves that last season was not a fluke, but a genuine down turn in his abilities.

Jan. 17 - 3B Ray Wilson (37 R) $780K for 1 season with $100K bonus for 550 PA, which he will not come close to getting
Wilson was a Supplemental Round pick (26th overall) in 1987 by Seattle and got a bonus of $1.66 million. In his 11-year major league career, he has hit .275 with an OPS of .699. He has 470 career hits. He stole 47 bases in 1991, the only season he was a regular. Last season with the Tigers and Angels, he hit .297 in 273 AB with and OPS of .748. He was only signed for two reasons: 1) to be a pinch-hitter (he has no power, but walks a bunch) and 2) to provide veteran leadership to our team. He is an extremely hard worker, is very bright and knows how to be a positive leader in the clubhouse.

Editor's Note: One thing I forgot to mention in the opening salvo is that since there is no need, with my alignment of the teams, for Houston and Milwaukee to swap leagues, they will not. The Astros are in the NL and the Brewers are in the AL. My alignment is identical to that of 1993, the only one where there were 4 7-team divisions, with the following additions and changes: Tampa Bay and Washington are added to the AL East and Milwaukee moves to the AL West. Atlanta and Cincinnati move to the NL East and St. Louis moves to the NL West and the Diamondbacks and Portland Beavers are added to the NL West. It would have been more logical to put the Beavers in the AL West and Washington in the NL East and then you'd have each of the 4 newest expansion teams in a separate division, but I did not want my team in the American League.....

Rule V Draft

Editor's Note: This time, I remembered to put my Expansion Draft players on the 40-man roster before the Rule V Draft and I did not lose any! Also, I looked it up and it is kosher for the Beavers to participate in the draft as the Diamondbacks selected two players in the 1997 Rule V Draft, the year of their expansion.

We picked one player: 3B Alan Spitzer (26 L) from the Los Angeles Angels.
Spitzer was drafted in the 5th round of the June draft of 1995 by Toronto, but failed to sign. In 1996, he was selected in the Supplemental Round by the Angels (30th overall) and signed with them for a $1.17 million bonus. He has spent the last two seasons in A+, hitting .307 with 37 HR and 192 RBI with an .889 OPS. He was recommended for selection by SD Eddie Henderson. He'll get a chance to win the 3B job in competition with Joe Hartin (31 R) and we may end up platooning them.

2001 Spring Training Report

We have made it through our first Spring Training, though not unscathed. We went 14-14 in the games, which is awesome, but we have four players on the Disabled List for Opening Day, including two that would have been in the lineup for certain. Thankfully, at least all of our thin pitching corps made it through intact. So let's....

Meet the Beavers!

Opening Day starters are highlighted in blue.

Opening Day Roster
Pitchers
Starting Rotation

Edmondo Buenaventura
31 yr. old right-hander from Venezuela. 5' 11" 200 lbs. $810K for 1 season. Free agent after this year. 92 MPH fastball with a solid slider and changeup. Not a strikeout pitcher, but should be effective with a good defense behind him. Laid back and easygoing off the field, but a fiery competitor on the mound. .151 career batting average with no home runs and not a very good bunter. For more on Edmondo see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 20, 2000.

Ricky Chase
30 yr. old right-hander from San Diego, CA. 6' 4" 215 lbs. Minimum salary this season and will be arbitration eligible this Fall. 93 MPH fastball. Rarely throws a 4-seamer, preferring a cut fastball. He also throws a good curveball and an excellent forkball. Rarely throws a changeup, mostly because his is crap. Home runs allowed will be an issue. He has never started a game in his 7-years in the major leagues, all spent with the Angels. 10-13 with 5 SV and a 4.00 career ERA in 288 IP. 33 HR allowed, 111 BB and 225 SO. Not a great hitter, but better than most pitchers. He has a career .286 average in only 28 AB. Average bunter. 21st round draft pick by the Angels in 1989. Our 27th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Ron Rau
29 yr. old right-hander from Loveland, OH, a suburb of Cincinnati. 6' 3" 245 lbs. $3.7 million per season for 2 years and then will be arbitration eligible. 94 MPH fastball. Throws a slider and a curveball, two different changeups and a forkball. Only one of the changeups is any good and we have tried to get him to scrap the 2nd one, but he insists it will eventually be a good pitch. Very smart. Better than average hitter for a pitcher, though he is 0 for 7 in the majors. A good bunter. Has never started a major league game. For more on Ron see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 12.

Alan Gross
26 yr. old left-hander from Merrionette Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago. 5' 11" 185 lbs. Rookie. 96 MPH fastball. Rarely throws it though, preferring a cut fastball, which he throws a bit slower. Also throws a good slider and forkball and a non-effective changeup. Control will be a major issue. Very smart. Last year, his first in the majors, he went 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 21 IP, all in relief, with 2 HR, 10 BB and 12 SO. Not much of a hitter, but an excellent bunter. 5th round pick of the Mets in 1993. Got a $1.7 million signing bonus. Our 18th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Tony Ricketts
26 yr. old right-hander from Huber Heights, OH, a suburb of Dayton. 6' 5" 225 lbs. Rookie. 95 MPH fastball. Also throws an excellent slider and curveball and a stinky changeup. He has the best control of any of our pitchers. Not so bright, but a leader in the clubhouse nonetheless. Was used exclusively as a reliever in AAA last year. 3-1 with 2 SV in 47.2 IP with 3 HR, 19 BB and 30 SO. Only 33 H. Terrible hitter, but an excellent bunter. He was a 6th round pick by Oakland in 1996. He was out first pick in the Expansion Draft.

Bullpen
Steve Mulder
28 yr. old left-hander from Casper, Wyoming. 6' 3" 215 lbs. Minimum salary and arbitration eligible after this season. 90 MPH fastball. Throws an excellent slider, a mediocre curve and a crappy changeup. Very smart. He will be the long reliever and will also face lefties in the late innings and will be the first option to replace someone in the rotation. He pitched the last 4 seasons for Texas, going 9-11 with 1 SV and a 4.03 ERA. 18 starts, all last season. 196.2 IP, 230 H, 20 HR, 77 BB and 109 SO. Not much of a hitter, but a good bunter. 2nd round draft pick by Texas in 1993. He was our 13th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Larry Castillo
27 yr. old right-hander from DeSoto, TX, a suburb of Dallas. 5' 9" 175 lbs. Minimum salary this year and arbitration eligible after this season. 94 MPH fastball, but throws a cutter mostly. Also has a good curveball. He pitched the last three seasons for Texas, going 9-7 with 3 SV and a 4.79 ERA. 148.1 IP, 158 H, 20 HR, 51 BB and 89 SO. 2nd round draft pick by Texas in 1994. He was our 20th pick in the expansion Draft.

Greg Richey
32 yr. old right-hander from Pickerington, OH, a suburb of Columbus. 6' 5" 215 lbs. $3.6 million for 1 season. Free agent after this year. 95 MPH fastball, but throws a cutter. Also has a good slider. Smart, but not a bit on the abrasive side. For more on Greg see the Free Agent Signings post above for Jan. 8.

Jim Ackley
26 yr. old left-hander from Warwick, RI, a satellite of Providence. 5' 11" 190 lbs. Rookie. 91 MPH fastball, but throws a cutter. Also has a knee-buckling curveball. Not a hard worker. Pitched 5 games of relief for Milwaukee in 1999. Pitched well in AA last season: 3-3 with 12 saves and a 2.97 ERA. 30.1 IP, 29 H, 3 HR, 11 BB and 22 SO. Season ended in June with a torn flexor tendon. He was an 8th round pick in 1995 by Milwaukee. He was our 17th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Neville Carter
32 yr. old right-hander from Boonton, NJ. 6' 5" 220 lbs. $800K for 1 season. Free agent after this year. 99 MPH fastball. Also throws a very hard slider. Smart on the mound. For more on Neville see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 28.

Ron Beckman
24 yr. old right-hander from Cleveland, OH. 5' 7" 165 lbs. Rookie. 97 MPH fastball. Also throws a great hard slider. How the little fella can throw the ball so hard is beyond me, but once I saw him in action (on tape), I had to get him for the Beavers. I am certain he will be a fan favorite. However, he is not just a novelty, as SD Eddie Henderson thinks he is the most talented of all the pitchers we managed to sign this past winter. He led the team in strikeouts in the Spring Training games with 18 in 17 IP. Ranked as the #99 prospect this Spring by Baseball America, the highest ranking of any of our players. He is smart and has a good character. Pitched 4 games for the Giants last season and struck out 9 in 8.2 IP. The Giants drafted him in the 2nd round in 1995. He was our 4th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Fielders
Catchers

Masanori Ishii
32 yr. old who bats and throws right-handed from Kitakami, Japan. 6' 0" 220 lbs. $2.4 million per year for 2 seasons and then arbitration eligible. Smart and a take-charge receiver. Slow as molasses. For more on Masanori see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 27.

John McIvor
30 yr. old who bats and throws right-handed from Windsor, CT, a satellite of Hartford. 6' 0" 240 lbs. $2.4 million per year for 2 seasons and then probably arbitration eligible. Smart and has a strong arm. Probably a better catcher than Ishii, but Ishii looks to be a little better hitter, with better power and a better batting eye. Also fat and slow. For more on John see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 25.

Infielders
George Hopkins
29 yr. old 1B who throws right-handed and bats from both sides from Shenandoah, LA, a suburb of Baton Rouge. 6' 1" 235 lbs. Minimum salary and arbitration eligible after this season. In 3 major league seasons, 1997-1999, he hit .310 with 15 HR and 84 RBI in 500 AB. 75 BB and 82 SO. In 1999, he hit .310 with a .933 OPS in 129 AB for the Royals. In AAA that season, he hit .390 with an 1.136 OPS in 105 AB. He did not suffer any injury. In 2000, last season, though, he did not appear in the majors and only had 82 AB in AAA and hit .134 with a .393 OPS. He was sent all the way down to AA where he only hit .248 with a .772 OPS in 242 AB. Again, he suffered no injury. I can find no one who has an explanation for his sudden drop off in production. But we are not overwhelmed with quality candidates for the 1B job and we are going to give him a shot and see what he does. He was a 2nd round draft pick by the Giants in 1992, but did not sign. The Reds signed him after drafting him in the 2nd round in 1993. He was our 30th pick in the Expansion Draft. He was named the outstanding player of each round of the Southern League playoffs last year, so maybe he has turned the corner.

Rick Deveney
28 yr. old 1B who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Phoenix, AZ. 6' 5" 245 lbs. $590K for one season and then he can be auto-renewed. One of the leaders in the clubhouse. Not a strong fielder. For more on Rick see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 12.

Fred Pariseau
31 yr. old 2B who bats and throws right-handed from Lowell, IN. 5' 8" 155 lbs. $6.6 million for 1 year. Free agent after this season. Smart and a hard worker. Capable of being a leader, but does not mind being a supporter. For a little guy he can generate a lot of power with his bat. For more on Fred see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 12.

Rickey Clayton
31 yr. old 2B who bats and throws right-handed from San Luis, AZ, a satellite of Yuma that sits right on the Mexican border. 6' 0" 185 lbs. $740K for 1 year. Free agent after this season. For more on Rickey see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 12.

Alan Spitzer

26 yr. old 3B who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Lewisville, TX, a suburb of Dallas. 6' 2" 210 lbs. Rookie. Very smart and and a strong leader in the clubhouse. For more on Alan see the Rule V Draft posting above.

Joe Hartin
31 yr. old 3B who bats and throws right-handed from Pottsville, PA. 5' 11" 200 lbs. $600K for 1 year and arbitration eligible after this season. For more on Joe see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 12.

Randy Penn
32 yr. old SS who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Bunker Hill, IL, a suburb of St. Louis, MO. 6' 0" 195 lbs. $700K for 1 year. Free agent after this season. Hard worker and a leader in the clubhouse. For more on Randy see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 12.

Outfielders
Rich Doody
32 yr. old LF who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Abington Township, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia. 6' 2" 230 lbs. $800K for 1 year and then arbitration eligible after this season. Very smart and a hard worker and a strong leader. Did not grow up a rich dude, but he is one now! Does not have a brother named Howdy.... In 6 MLB seasons he has 423 AB and has hit .241 with 12 HR and 47 RBI. .686 OPS. Spent most of last season as the Indians primary pinch-hitter and did a decent job, batting .261 with a .762 OPS. Career .340 average with a .908 OPS in AAA in 846 AB. Not much of a fielder or runner. Drafted in the 11th round by the Yankees in 1991. He was our 9th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Don Quinney

26 yr. old LF/CF who bats and throws left-handed from Parkway-South Sacramento, CA. 6' 1" 205 lbs. Rookie. Smart and a leader-type personality. He has never played above A+. Last season he was in A Ball. He has no power, but draws walks and steals bases. 8th round pick by the Mets in 1996. he was our 25th pick in the Expansion Draft and would not be playing on Opening Day if not for injuries to others. Not really a center fielder, but he will not be terrible out there.

Alex Rabelo
31 yr. old LF/CF who bats right-handed and throws left-handed from Chitre, Panama. 6' 0" 190 lbs. Minimum salary this year and arbitration eligible after this season. A career .215 hitter in 7 major league seasons. 1334 AB. He can run and is an excellent center fielder and will draw some walks, but not enough to make up for his weak bat. He was signed by the White Sox as a free agent out of Panama. As a prospect, he was ranked has high as #22 (1990), but just has never hit. He was our 15th pick in the Expansion Draft. He was not even on our 40-man roster until all the injuries to our center fielders forced us to bring him to Portland. He will platoon in center with Quinney until we either find a better option or the other center fielders get healed.

Lebron Williams
31 yr. old (32 shortly) RF who bats and throws left-handed from Iowa City, IA. 5' 11" 210 lbs. $830K for 1 year and arbitration eligible after this season. Smart and a hard worker. He finished 3rd in the AL Rookie of the Year voting in 1994 and made the All-Star team that season. In his 7-year major league career he has hit .259 with a .736 OPS in 1419 AB. Not a great fielder and no threat to steal. Has not hit left-handers well in his career. He will bat 3rd for us against right-handers. He wanted to platoon him, but have not found a suitable right-handed compliment yet. He was drafted in the 5th round by the Royals in 1989. He was our 2nd pick in the Expansion Draft.

Randy Stump
27 yr. old RF who bats and throws left-handed from Blue Springs, MO, a suburb of Kansas City. 6' 0" 205 lbs. Rookie. Not too bright, but a leader nonetheless. He had 39 AB for Tampa Bat last year and hit .179. In AAA, he hit .263 with an .860 OPS. He has a lot of power in that bat, but does not make contact enough to be an effective hitter. Slow and not a great fielder. He was the 11th overall pick of the 1995 draft by Tampa Bay. He was our 31st pick in the Expansion Draft.

Disabled List
Ray Wilson
37 yr. old 3B/1B who bats and throws wight-handed from El Paso, TX. 6' 2" 235 lbs. $780K for 1 year. Free agent after this season. Smart and the hardest worker on the team and the undisputed leader of the clubhouse. Broke his hand in Spring Training and is expected to return in two weeks. For more on Ray see the Free Agent Signings post above for Jan. 17.

Frank Wiginton
30 yr. old LF who throws right-handed and bats from both sides from Dayton, OH. 6' 0" 200 lbs. $4 million per year for 3 seasons with a $180K bonus for 550 PA. Sprained his thumb in Spring Training and is expected to return in two weeks. For more on Frank see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 11.

Rich Babbin
36 yr. old OF who bats and throws left-handed from New York, NY. 6' 1" 210 lbs. $4.4 million for 1 year. Free Agent after this season. Not a hard worker. Decent fielder in left. Slightly above average runner, but is good at stealing bases. Pulled a muscle in Spring Training and is expected to return in about a week or maybe less. For more on Rich see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 12.

Scott Setta
34 yr. old CF who bats and throws right-handed from Catalina Foothills, AZ, a suburb of Tucson. 6' 3" 195 lbs. $900K for 1 year. Free agent after this season. Smart and a very hard worker, but not a leader. A bit of a playboy. Still has enough range to play center, but just. Still a decent runner, but not the blazer he once was. Fractured his cheekbone when hit by a pitch in Spring Training, but it was not as serious as it could have been and he is expected back within two weeks. I figured old center fielders would be prone to injury, so I signed two of them, but they both got hurt! For more on Scott see the Free Agent Signings post above for Dec. 5.

Prospects and other minor leaguers who might see action for the Beavers this summer
Prospects ranked by Baseball America in the top 200

Freddy Arana #144
25 yr. old right-handed P from New York, NY. 6' 0" 190 lbs. 94 MPH fastball. Good curve and top-notch changeup. Smart. Wants to start, but just does not seem to have the stamina for it. 3.28 ERA in AAA last season in 90.2 IP. 9 GS, 9 HR, 35 BB and 88 SO. Drafted in the 10th round by the Phillies in 1994. He was our 22nd pick in the Expansion Draft.

Danny Hernandez #199
21 yr. old 1B who bats and throws left-handed from Los Teques, Venezuela. 6' 7" 225 lbs. A good runner for such a tall man. Will start the season in Jacksonville (AA), but we hope he might make it to Portland before the year is out. SD Eddie Henderson says he is already our best hitting first baseman in the organization. Hit .301 on A Ball with a .900 OPS, but struggled a bit when promoted to A+ (.734 OPS). He was a scouting discovery of the Expos in 1996. he was our 3rd pick in the Expansion Draft.

Other Prospects we have hopes for

Ivan Lopez
24 yr. old SS who bats and throws right-handed from Maracay, Venezuela. 6' 1" 200 lbs. Gold Glove fielding skills and can run very well, but not much of a hitter. Will be the first option at short should Randy Penn get hurt. He hit .261 with a .676 OPS in AA last year. He was a scouting discovery of the Yankees in 1992. He was out 23rd pick in the Expansion Draft.

Rick Ferrell
25 yr. old SS who bats and throws right-handed from Kingsport, TN. 6' 0" 185 lbs. Strong fielder and runner, but no hitter. Wil be option #2 behind Ivan Lopez. He hit .276 with a .692 OPS in A Ball last year. 18th round pick by Arizona in 1996. He was our 5th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Dal Hatzell
25 yr. old RF who bats and throws right-handed from New Buffalo, MI. 6' 0" 190 lbs. Not too bright, but a hard worker. Has one of the strongest outfield arms in baseball. Not the strongest, though. The Brewers have a 19 yr. old Dominican, Octavio Jimenez, who is flooring scouts with his throws. But Hatzell's is in the top 10, at least. Can run well, but is not a good base runner, nor a strong fielder, despite his arm. Not very bright, but an extremely hard worker and a very likable guy. He hit .280 with a .773 OPS in A+ Ball last year. 7th round pick by the Mariners in 1995. He was our 34th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Jerry Hogan
24 yr. old 1B/RF who bats and throws left-handed from Delavan Lake, WI. 6' 0" 190 lbs. Not too bright, but a stand up guy. Not the best right fielder, but we are trying to convert him to 1B, where he, so far, is showing good range, though his footwork still needs some work. He hit .273 with an .821 OPS in AA last year. 8th round pick by the Pirates in 1994. He was our 29th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Pedro Huerta
23 yr. old left-handed P from Yaritagua, Venezuela. 6' 5" 200 lbs. 96 MPH fastball. Knee-buckling curve. Crappy changeup is keeping him from starting and he has shown no signs that it will ever get better. But he should be a great reliever if his control comes around. Not too bright. In AA last year, he went 8-2 with a 2.53 ERA in 81.2 relief innings. 67 H, 3 HR, 49 BB and 83 SO. Pretty wild. 2nd round pick by the Astros in 1996 and signed for a bonus of $1.18 million. He was our 21st pick in the Expansion Draft.

Gabe Regalado
22 yr. old LF/RF who bats and throws left-handed from Xalapa, Mexico. 6' 0" 165 lbs. Smart. Good fielder, though his arm is only adequate for right. Extremely fast, but not yet a good base stealer. He hit .275 with a .747 OPS in A Ball last year. He was a scouting discovery of the Giants in 1995. He was our 16th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Steve Jensen
24 yr. old C who bats and throws right-handed from High Point, NC. 6' 2" 210 lbs. He is a solid receiver. In A+ Ball last year, he hit .293 with a .785 OPS. No very fast. Drafted in the 10th round by the White Sox in 1995. He was our 10th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Minor leaguers who might end up in Portland this summer
Bobby Ramirez
26 yr. old right-handed SP from Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela. 6' 0" 185 lbs. 88 MPH fastball. Throws a 4-seamer and a 2-seamer and a good curveball. Not a strikeout pitcher and his control is an issue, but he keeps the ball down, even when wild, and home runs are hard to come by off him. Stamina is not ideal either, but he is a very hard worker and a good kid. He pitched exclusively in relief in AA last year. He went 4-2 with 1 SV and a 3.95 ERA. 57 IP, 58 H, 4 HR, 19 BB and 37 SO. A horrible hitter and poor bunter. A scouting discovery of the Royals in 1990. He was our 12th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Pete Reilly
27 yr. old right-handed SP from Athens, AL, a suburb of Huntsville. 6' 2" 210 lbs. 94 MPH fastball. Has a great curve and an excellent changeup. Control is holding him back. Smart and a very strong leader in the clubhouse. A very good hitter for a pitcher. Pitched 4 games for the Tigers in relief last season and, in 10 IP, allowed only 6 hits, 1 home run, 5 BB and struck out 10. Has only had 44 AB as a professional, but has .341, though he has never drawn a walk. Only 8 SO. 15th round pick by the Tigers in 1996. He was our 6th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Billy Rueter
28 yr. old right-handed SP from Oskaloosa, IA. 6' 1 " 205 lbs. 92 MPH fastball. Excellent changeup and a strong forkball. Not a strong worker. Control and keeping the ball down have both been issues so far. 2.68 ERA in AAA last year. 4-0 with 4 SV. 74 IP, 70 H, 3 HR, 32 BB and 57 SO. 15th round pick by the Angels in 1993. He was our 7th pick in the Expansion Draft.

Ron Charles
30 yr. old C who bats and throws right-handed from Dallas, TX. 5' 11" 220 lbs. Can run very well for a catcher, despite his rotundity. A sold, if unspectacular receiver. Has a little power, but his real plus at the plate is his patience. Got 58 AB in the majors with the Pirates in 1997 and hit .207 with a .574 OPS. Was a backup catcher in AA last year, where he hit .245 with a .772 OPS. 22nd round pick by the Pirates in 1990. Was out 11th pick in the Expansion Draft.

There are a few others that I have hopes for, but we won't waste ink on them until they show us something.

How far do you think we can go this year when only one of our 5 starters in the rotation has ever started a game in the majors?

Our main goal will be to try to get our hands on as many players as we can who show any spark of talent. The second goal will be to avoid 100 losses. That one may be tough. I would also love to finish with a better record than the Washington Senators, but that does not seem likely as their owner gave them a budget exactly double the one our owner gave us......

See you on Opening Day!

Opening Day!

We are in San Francisco to begin the season with a 2-game series against manager George Harper (61) and his Giants. They are picked by Baseball America to finish a very close 2nd to St. Louis in the NL West.

Portland Beavers at
San Francisco Giants

Edmondo Buenaventura, Por (31 R) vs Brian Stinnett, SF (30 R)

According to SD Eddie Henderson, C Stan Brown is their best player. CF John Anderson and RF billy Griffin are also standouts.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age Bats BA-OPS)
POR - 1: SS Randy Penn (32 L) 2: CF Don Quinney (26 L) 3: RF Lebron Williams (31 L) 4: 2B Fred Pariseau (31 R) 5: 1B George Hopkins (29 S) 6: LF Rich Doody (32 L) 7: 3B Alan Spitzer (26 L) 8: C Masanori Ishii (32 R)

SF - 1: CF John Anderson (27 S) 2: SS Herman Taylor (27 R) 3: C Stan Brown (29 R) 4: LF Jerry Kerns (30 S) 5: RF Billy Griffin (34 L) 6: 3B Curt Brown (27 R) 7: 2B Dave Guillory (25 L) 8: 1B Manny Bonilla (33 R)

Randy Penn leads us off by working the count full and then drawing a walk. Don Quinney also works the count full, but strikes out. Lebron Williams swings at the first pitch and grounds into a 4-6-3 double play. He knows the way to my heart!

Bottom of the 1st: John Anderson lines out to short. Herman Taylor lines a hit into left center. A wild pitch sends him to 2nd. Stan Brown walks on four pitches. Jerry Kerns grounds one to 2nd, but all we get is the force at 2nd, 2 outs, runners at 1st and 3rd. Billy Griffin flies out to left to end the inning.

Top of the 3rd: Alan Spitzer, our Rule V Draft pick, becomes the answer to the trivia question, "Who had the first ever hit for the Beavers?" with a double to left center! With 1 out, we have the bases loaded, but Don Quinney grounds into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Top of the 4th: With 2 outs and the bases empty, George Hopkins hits the first ever home run by a Beaver to straight away center! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the 4th: An error to lead off the inning by rookie 3B Alan Spitzer and doubles by Billy Griffin and Dave Guillory, the latter with 2 outs, gives the Giants a 2 to 1 lead.

Bottom of the 6th: SS Randy Penn got taken out on a double play attempt at 2B by Jerry Kerns and had to leave the game. Trainer Allen Burger says it is his back and will probably keep him out a week. Rickey Clayton goes in to play short.

Top of the 9th: Still 2 to 1, Giants. New pitcher: RHP Alex Andrade, their closer. Lebron Williams strikes out. Fred Pariseau strikes out. George Hopkins doubles down the right field line! The tying run is in scoring position for Rich Doody. He grounds out to 2nd....

Lost - 2 to 1

We had 6 hits and made 1 errors.
The Giants had 7 hits and made no errors.

We turned three double plays.

Edmondo Buenaventura (L 0-1) went 7 innings, allowed 2 unearned runs (He leads the league in ERA!), 6 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3.
RHP Neville Carter went 1 innings, allowed a hit and a walk and struck out 1.

Brian Stinnett (W 1-0) went 8 innings, gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 5.
RHP Alex Andrade (SV 1) went 1 inning, gave us a hit and struck out 2.

SS Randy Penn had 2 walks. 1B George Hopkins hit a double and a home run. 3B Alan Spitzer hit a double and made an error. C Masanori Ishii had 2 hits.

For the Giants, SS Herman Taylor had 3 hits.

Skimming is expected and encouraged!

A lot of the stuff I write down, like lineups and the list of draftees, etc. I do because it helps me learn the league better and quicker. I do not figure anyone cares about that stuff much, but since I am writing it down anyway, I may as well post it.....

Plus, as I mentioned before, my health status has me doing nothing much but playing OOTP all day (and Civ VI, now). Those of you with actual lives certainly cannot be taking the time to read EVERYTHING and no one will probably be able to keep up with my output if they try.

Portland Beavers (1-3 .250 3 GB in 6th place in the NL West) at
Montreal Expos (3-1 .750 tied for 1st in the NL East)

Edmondo Buenaventura, Por (31 R 0-1 0.00 7.7-0.0-2.6-3.9 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Manny Fernandez, Mtl (27 R 0-0 5.68 14.2-0.0-1.4-8.5)

Fernandez is their #1 pitcher and is getting paid $25.4 million for this season.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age Bats BA-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: CF Don Quinney (26 L .167-0-0-.536 in 12 AB)
2: RF Lebron Williams (31 L .176-0-0-.353 in 17 AB)
3: 1B George Hopkins (29 S .188-1-1-.778 in 16 AB)
4: 2B Fred Pariseau (31 R .158-0-2-.368 in 19 AB)
5: LF Rich Doody (32 L .222-0-0-.444 in 18 AB)
6: 3B Alan Spritzer (26 L .167-0-0-.481 in 12 AB)

8: C John McIvor (30 R .000-0-0-.000 in 1 AB)
9: P Edmondo Buenaventura (31 R .000-0-0-.000 in 2 AB)

MONTREAL
1: LF Antonio Barajas (25 R .235-0-0-.529 in 17 AB)
2: CF Danny Perez (24 L .364-0-3-1.053 in 11 AB)
3: 3B Bill Anzivino (29 R .333-1-3-1.035 in 18 AB)
4: C Dwight Smith (28 R .294-1-4-.904 in 17 AB)
5: 2B Oscar Quinones (28 R .278-0-0-.667 in 18 AB)
6: 1B Darrell Ehrlich (31 L .167-0-1-.452 in 12 AB)
7: SS Raphael Clark (26 L .500-0-1-1.350 in 4 AB)
8: RF Ray Barnard (24 L .154-0-1-.421 in 13 AB)
9: P Manny Fernandez (27 R .500-0-0-1.000 in 2 AB)

Don Quinney grounds out to 2nd. Lebron Williams draws a walk. George Hopkins flies out to the warning track in left. Fred Pariseau flies out to left.

Bottom of the 1st: Antonio Barajas strikes out. Danny Perez walks. He tries to steal, but is thrown out! Bill Anzivino singles to left. Dwight Smith walks. Oscar Quinones bloops a hit into left and Rich Doody lets it get by him for an error. Anzivino scores and the runners are at 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. 1 to 0, Expos. Darrell Ehrlich grounds out to 1st.

Bottom of the 3rd: The Expos lead off with back-to-back infield hits, but Danny Perez hurts himself running out his and has to leave the game. Mario Ochoa is in to run for him. P Edmondo Buenaventura strikes out Bill Anzivino and Dwight Clark, their #3 and #4 hitters and then gets a ground out to get out unscathed!

Bottom of the 6th: Oscar Quinones gets a 1-out hit and with 2 outs, Raphael Clark doubles to score a run. 2 to 0, Expos. Manager Billy Crider then gives an intentional walk to Ray Barnard to get to the pitcher, but P Edmondo Buenaventura walks him too to load the bases. Call to the Bullpen: RHP Ron Beckman. Antonio Barajas, figuring Beckman would want to throw strikes here, swings at the first pitch and doubles down the left field line, clearing the bases. 5 to 0, Expos.

Top of the 7th: Now this game seems likely to be over, since we have not scored more than 2 runs in 9 innings yet this season, but the game still holds some interest as it is the 7th inning and the Beavers have yet to get a base hit. We have 2 walks and have reached on an error, but with 3 total base runners in the game, we still have managed to ground into 2 double plays. Lebron Williams leads off by reaching on an error and we do NOT ground into a double play, however, the next three batters all make outs.

Top of the 8th: Montreal scored 3 more runs in the bottom of the 7th, so it is now 8 to 0, Expos. Our first two batters make outs, but John McIvor grounds a single up the middle! Okay, now there is nothing left to see here....

Lost - 8 to 1

We had 4 hits and made 1 error.
The Expos had 12 hits and made 3 errors.

Edmondo Buenaventura (L 0-2) went 5.2 innings, allowed 5 runs (he does not lead the league in ERA anymore), 7 hits, 4 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3.
RHP Ron Beckman went 1.1 innings, allowed 3 runs, 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.
RHP Larry Castillo went 1 inning, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.

Manny Fernandez (W 1-0) went 9 innings (CG), gave us 1 unearned run, 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. He threw a WP. At bat, he drew a walk and scored a run.

RF Lebron Williams drew 2 walks. PH Rick Deveney had a hit.

For the Expos, LF Antonio Barajas had 3 hits with a double and 3 RBIs. 2B Oscar Quinones had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI, but made 3 errors (his first 3 of the season). He is actually regarded as a pretty good defender. The word on the injured Danny Perez is that he is fine and it was just a precaution to take him out of the game.

Random Fact of the Week: Now I am not saying that our offense was any good or anything, but we sure were not as fortunate as the Padres were. We hit .199 for the week and the Padres hit .194, the two worst averages in the National League. We hit 4 home runs and they hit 4 home runs. We had 8 doubles and they had 5 doubles and 1 triple. We walked 17 times and they walked 17 times, though 3 of theirs were intentional and none of ours were. We got hit by one pitch and they got hit by 1 pitch. We did not steal a base, but we did not try to. They stole 1 base and got caught twice. We scored 10 runs and they scored 19. Now how is that fair!!!

Home Opener!

We christen Multnomah Park with a 4-game series with manager Bobby Fuentes (66) and his Braves. They split a 4-game series with Arizona over the weekend. After one week of play, they are 8th in the NL in scoring with 5.0 runs per game (Portland is #16, dead last, with 1.7). They are tied for 13th with 6.0 runs allowed per game (Portland is #9 with 4.5). Baseball America tabbed them for 7th place in the NL West in the pre-season. , but to still win a lot more games than us. They said we were a lock for having the worst record in baseball and that we would easily surpass 100 losses.

Atlanta Braves (3-3 .500 2 GB tied for 4th place in the NL East) at
Portland Beavers (1-5 .167 5 GB in 7th place in the NL West)

Victor Solis, Atl (29 L 1-0 2.16 8.6-0.0-4.3-6.5 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Tony Ricketts, Por (26 R First game)

8: LF Rich Doody (32 L .231-1-1-.577 in 26 AB)
9: P Tony Ricketts (26 R First game)

It is 45 degrees with a fairly stiff breeze blowing from right to left making it feel even colder.

Tony Jones hits a fly ball down the right field line that Lebron Williams catches in foul territory. Gary Chinnici grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Henry Garcia strikes out! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the 1st: Alex Rabelo works the count full and then swings, but then changes his mind, but too late....he went around for strike three. Rickey Clayton grounds out to 2nd. Masanori Ishii works the count full and then grounds out to 2nd.

Top of the 4th: So far, the only base runners have been the opposing pitchers. Theirs got a hit and ours got a walk. With 1 out and nobody on base, Henry Garcia hits a home run to right. 1 to 0, Braves.

Bottom of the 8th: Rickey Clayton leads off with an infield hit and, with 1 out, Fred Pariseau hits a home run to left! 2 to 1, Beavers!

Top of the 9th: On the Hill: RHP Greg Richey, beginning his second inning of work. I hope he makes it through the inning, because no one else in the bullpen is fresh. Gary Chinnici grounds out to short. Henry Garcia lines a hit to right. Guillermo Morga grounds one to Rickey Clayton at short: 6-4-3 double play!! ....and THIS Ballgame Belongs to the Beavers!

CF Rich Babbin is ready to play, so he was activated from the Disabled List for today's game and RF Randy Stump was optioned to Indianapolis (AAA). SS Randy Penn is also ready to play.

Atlanta Braves (3-4 .429 3 GB tied for 5th place in the NL East) at
Portland Beavers (2-5 .286 5 GB in 7th place in the NL West)

Fran Johnson, Atl (26 R 0-0 6.75 12.1-1.3-2.7-5.4 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Ron Rau, Por (29 R 0-0 1.29 6.4-0.0-1.3-6.4)

Lineups: Pos Name (Age Bats BA-HR-RBI-OPS)
ATLANTA
1: 2B Tony Jones (28 L .345-2-8-1.000 in 29 AB)
2: RF Emilio Borja (30 R .222-0-5-.530 in 27 AB)
3: CF Henry Garcia (27 L .448-2-2-1.277 in 29 AB)

9: P Fran Johnson (26 R .000-0-0-.000 in 2 AB)

PORTLAND
1: SS Randy Penn (32 L .000-0-0-.500 in 2 AB)
2: RF Lebron Williams (31 L .192-1-1-.558 in 26 AB)
3: CF Rich Babbin (36 L First game)
4: 2B Fred Pariseau (31 R .267-1-4-.690 in 30 AB)
5: 1B George Hopkins (29 S .120-1-1-.505 in 25 AB)
6: LF Rich Doody (32 L .276-1-1-.655 in 29 AB)
7: 3B Alan Spitzer (26 L .176-0-1-.458 in 17 AB)
8: C Masanori Ishii (32 R .346-1-1-.832 in 26 AB)
9: P Ron Rau (29 R .000-0-0-.000 in 2 AB)

The weather is almost as bad as yesterday, but just a little better. 46 degrees instead of 45 and the wind is only 7-10 MPH instead of 15-20. Still overcast and looks more like rain today. The weather man says it will hold off until after the game, so that means we will surely get a rain delay....

Tony Jones strikes out looking! Emilio Borja lines out to 1st on an 0-2 pitch. Henry Garcia lines out to center. 1-2-3!

Bottom of the 1st: Randy Penn lines a hit to center. Lebron Williams strikes out. Rich Babbin grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. 2 outs. Fred Pariseau grounds out to short.

Bottom of the 3rd: Randy Penn leads off with a double down the right field line. Lebron Williams grounds a hit into left and Penn scores without a throw! 1 to 0, Beavers! That's all we get, though. Will we ever score more than 2 runs in a 9 inning game?

Bottom of the: Alan Spitzer leads off with a double to center, but the next three go down without a whimper.

Top of the 5th: With 1 out, Frederic Anderson singles to left for the Braves' first knock of the game. CF Rich Babbin made a great play to keep them from getting anything else.

Top of the 6th: Ron Olsen leads off with a walk, steals 2nd, gets bunted over to 3rd and then scores on a soft single by Tony Jones. 1 to 1. With 2 outs, Jones tries to steal, but is thrown out!

Bottom of the 7th: With 2 outs, we get a pair of baser runners when Rich Babbin walks and Fred Pariseau singles. George Hopkins ropes one to left center and Babbin tries to score from 2nd. The throw home is cut off and they nail Pariseau at 3rd, but the run counts! 2 to 1, Beavers!

Top of the 8th: Sergio Gonzalez leads off with a walk. Ron Olsen tries to bunt him over, but we get the force at 2nd. Juan Fuentes Strikes out looking. Call to the Bullpen: LHP Steve Mulder. A bad decision.... They pinch-hit with RHB Victor Santana and Mulder walks him. Call to the Bullpen: RHP Ron Beckman. Rick Deveney is in to play 1st on a double switch. Emilio Rojas beats out an infield hit to load the bases up with 2 outs. Why did we pull P Ron Rau?.... Now their best hitter is up, Henry Garcia. He is a lefty, but we already used the only rested lefty reliever we had today. Garcia swings at teh first pitch a lines one to center, but right to Rich Babbin! 3 outs!!

Top of the 9th: Cleanup hitter Guillermo Morga swings at a 3-0 pitch and grounds out to short. Thanks, Guillermo! Frederic Anderson does NOT swing at a 3-0 pitch and draws a walk. John Struthers swings at a 1-0 pitch and grounds out to 3rd and Anderson moves up to 3nd to put the tying run in scoring position with 2 outs. Sergio Gonzalez swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd!! ....and THIS Ballgame Belongs to the Beavers!

Our first wining streak! Beckman pitched a scoreless 9th without getting a strike on any hitter! And once again, 2 runs is still our high-water mark for the season in a 9 inning game. We got all of 3 in our only extra inning contest. I know we are not a very good hitting ball club, but we should not be THAT bad. We should score three or four every once in a while!

Won - 2 to 1

We had 10 hits and made no errors.
The Braves had 4 hits and made no errors.

Ron Rau (W 1-0) went 7.2 innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. He is the first Beaver starting pitcher to get a win! He also has started the season off with 2 great outings, the first 2 starts he has ever made in the major leagues.
LHP Steve Mulder faced 1 batter and walked him.
RHP Ron Beckman (SV 1) went 1.1 innings, allowed a hit and a walk.

Fran Johnson (L 0-1) went 7 innings, gave us 2 runs, 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4.

SS Randy Penn, in his first start since Opening Day, had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. 2B Fred Pariseau had 3 hits, but no runs or RBIs. 3B Alan Spitzer hit a double and drew a walk.

P.S. I need to apologize to our weather man. He was right, it never did rain until after the game was over.

CF Scott Setta was activated from the Disabled List and CF Alex Rabelo was waived and designated for assignment. If he clears waivers, which he should, he will go to Indianapolis.

Atlanta Braves (3-5 .375 3 GB tied for 5th place in the NL East) at
Portland Beavers (3-5 .375 5 GB tied for 6th place in the NL West)

Larry Raposa, Atl (25 R 0-1 3.38 27.0-3.4-10.1-0.0 H/9-HR/9-BB/9-K/9) vs Alan Gross, Por (26 L 0-0 1.29 6.4-0.0-0.0-9.0)

In his first start of the season, Raposa went 2.2 innings and gave up 8 hits and 3 walks and 6 runs, though only one ended up being officially earned. But it seems that he deserved his loss.

Gross, in his first start, had the best outing of any Beaver pitcher to date, allowing 1 run in 7 innings, with 5 hits, no walks and 9 strikeouts. He did not get a decision, though we won the game in 15 innings.

Today is Lebron Williams' 32nd birthday.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age Bats BA-HR-RBI-OPS)

8: LF Sergio Gonzalez (26 R .357-1-3-.919 in 28 AB)
9: P Larry Raposa (25 R Has not batted this year)

PORTLAND
1: SS Randy Penn (32 L .333-0-0-1.000 in 6 AB)
2: RF Lebron Williams (32 L .200-1-2-.550 in 30 AB)
3: LF Rich Babbin (36 L .333-0-0-.833 in 3 AB)
4: 2B Fred Pariseau (31 R .324-1-4-.784 in 34 AB)
5: 1B George Hopkins (29 S .138-1-2-.504 in 29 AB)
6: C Masanori Ishii (32 R .333-1-1-.788 in 30 AB)
7: CF Scott Setta (34 R First game)
8: 3B Alan Spitzer (26 L .211-0-1-.602 in 19 AB)
9: P Alan Gross (26 L .000-0-0-.000 in 2 AB)

Much nicer day today than the last two have been: 52 degrees with clear skies and a slight breeze blowing out to left.

Tony Jones flies out to right on a 2-2 pitch. Gary Chinnici grounds out to 3rd on a 2-2 pitch. Henry Garcia hits a 1-1 pitch to straight away center and over the wall. 1 to 0, Braves. Guillermo Morga walks on four pitches. Emilio Borja swings at the first pitch and lines a double down the right field line. Morga tries to score from 1st, but Lebron Williams gets the ball in quickly to cutoff man Fred Pariseau, who throws Morga out at the plate to end the inning! That was a BIG run, because if you score two runs on us, we have no chance to win....

Bottom of the 1st: Randy Penn flies out to center. Lebron Williams flies out to center. Rich Babbin flies out to center.

Top of the 2nd: With 1 out, Frederic Anderson doubles off the wall in left center. Sergio Gonzalez' ball does not hit the wall on the fly, but bounces to it for another double. 2 to 0, Braves and the best we can now hope for is an extra-inning game....

Bottom of the 2nd: With 2 outs, Masanori Ishii singles and Scott Setta walks in his first plate appearance of the season. Alan Spitzer singles through the hole on the left side and Ishii scores and Setta goes to 3rd. 2 to 1, Braves. P Alan Gross draws a walk to load the bases up for Randy Penn. He grounds out to short.

Bottom of the 3rd: Lebron Williams leads off with a walk and Rich Babbin grounds a single to right and Williams goes to 3rd without a throw. Fred Pariseau drives one to the gap in left center and it is caught, but Williams tags and scores easily. 2 to 2! George Hopkins beats out an infield hit. Masanori Ishii grounds a hit to right and Babbin heads for home and just beats the throw! 3 to 2, Beavers! A new record for runs in a 9-inning game!! Three, baby! Count 'em! Thats all we get, though.

Top of the 4th: With 1 out, Frederic Anderson walks and then Sergio Gonzalez hits his 2nd double of the fay to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. P Larry Raposa grounds out to 2rd and the runners hold. Tony Jones pops one up to short left and LF Rich Babbin and SS Randy Penn look at each other as the ball drops between them for a hit. Anderson scores to tie the game at 3 and Gonzalez tries to take advantage of the confusion to score from 2nd, but Penn throws him out at home to end the inning!

Bottom of the 4th: Lebron Williams hits a 1-out double, but Rich Babbin and Fred Pariseau both strike out.

Top of the 5th: With 2 outs and the bases empty, Guillermo Morga hits a 1-0 pitch out of the park to left center. 4 to 3, Braves. It is going to suck that we set a new high in runs scored and still lose....

Bottom of the 6th: New pitcher: RHP Al Valentine. With 1 out, PH Rick Deveney singles to right and then goes to 2nd on a ground out. Lebron Williams comes through with a 2-out hit to left center and Deveney, not so speedily, heads for home. He beats the throw! 4 to 4! 4 runs in one game! Unbelievable!

Top of the 9th: Still 4 to 4. New Pitcher: RHP Greg Richey. With 1 out, 3B Ron Olsen gets a four pitch walk. Full count to Gary Chinnici and he swings and misses! 2 outs. Henry Garcia hits a 3-1 pitch to right for a double, but Olsen stops at 3rd. Guillermo Morga flies out to right to end the inning!

Bottom of the 9th: On the hill: RHP Don Wissmann, beginning his 2nd inning of work. Fred Pariseau leads us off with a walk. George Hopkins walks on four pitches. Masanori Ishii bunts the runners up to 2nd and 3rd. They walk Scott Setta intentionally to load the bases up with 1 out. Rookie Alan Spitzer strikes out on three pitches.... Dern. P Greg Richey up now and the only fresh arm in the pen is LHP Jim Ackley and Henry Garcia, who does not care which way you throw it to him, is the only lefty in their lineup. Well, we better win it right now.... Pinch-Hitter: LHB Rich Doody. He swings at the first pitch and deposits the ball in right for a hit!!!! ....and THIS Ballgame Belongs to the Beavers!

Three in a row! Undefeated on the season at home! Our first ever walk-off win!

Won - 5 to 4

We had 11 hits and made no errors.
The Braves had 11 hits and made no errors.

Alan Gross went 6 innings, allowed 4 runs, 8 hits, 2 home runs, 4 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he drew a walk.

About the same today as yesterday, weather-wise, except the wind has picked up: 52 degrees with clear skies and a 15 MPH wind blowing right to left.

Tony Jones strikes out looking! Emilio Borja taps one in front of the plate and C Masanori Ishii pounces on it quickly and makes a nice play to peg Borja out at first! Henry Garcia grounds a hit to right. He tries to steal and Ishii gins him down!

Bottom of the 1st: Randy Penn strikes out. Lebron Williams strikes out. P Chris Parris does NOT throw that hard, but his changeup is demoralizing. Rich Babbin grounds out to 1st.

Top of the 2nd: Frederic Anderson and John Struthers lead off with back-to-back singles. Sergio Gonzalez flies out to deep center and Anderson tags up and moves to 3rd. Jim Spencer grounds one to 3rd and Alan Spitzer goes around the horn, but Spencer is safe at first and Anderson scores. 1 to 0, Braves.

Fred Pariseau then drives one to the gap in right center. but Henry Garcia, that SOB, makes a leaping catch. George Hopkins pops out to end the inning.

Bottom of the 6th: A 1-out single by Scott Setta followed by a double by Alan Spitzer puts them at 2nd and 3rd for P Edmondo Buenaventura. Hate to see him go, but we need a hit here....Pinch-Hitter: LHB Rick Deveney. He gets an intentional walk. New pitcher: RHP Al Valentine. Randy Penn swings at the first pitch and bounces a hit to center and everyone moves up one base! 3 to 2, Beavers! Lebron Williams up. Full count and he swings at grounds one to 2nd and they get the force at the plate. 2 outs. Rich Babbin flies out to shallow center.

Top of the 7th: New Pitcher: RHP Ron Beckman. He sits the Braves down in order.

Bottom of the 7th: Fred Pariseau leads off with a double down the right field line. With 2 outs, and Pariseau now at 3rd, they walk Scott Setta intentionally (their 3rd issued in the game) and bring in a new pitcher: LHP Russ Dana to face rookie lefty Alan Spitzer. Pinch-Hitter: RHB John McIvor. He swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to left! 4 to 2, Beavers!

Top of the 8th: New Pitcher: RHP Neville Carter. He sits the Braves down in order (including Henry Garcia, that SOB), striking out two!....but not Garcia, that SOB.

Bottom of the 8th: Randy Penn reaches on an error by 2B Tony Jones to start the inning. After the next two make outs, Fred Pariseau and George Hopkins both single to load the bases up for Masanori Ishii. He grounds a single to left and two runs score! 6 to 2, Beavers!
