ML Strikeout Record in 1st ML start
In my Giants career, Jesse Foppert struck out 21 batters in his Major League debut as a starter. Due to injuries, I had brought him up to play long relief, but he got a spot start and - to say the least - made the most of it. If somone could tell me how to upload the boxscore, I'll post it. But here are his numbers:
IP - 9 H - 10 R - 4 ER - 4 BB - 1 K - 21 PI - 161 PS - 101 |

When he got to 130 he had 18 Ks with one out in the eighth. That's when he got fatigued, but he only allowed 2 hits and one run from that point on. We had an 8-run lead, so I left him in to see if he'd get the record.

Well, I'm sad to report that, after just 6 ML starts, Jesse Foppert blew out his arm and was forced to retire. His final career numbers -
10 G 6 GS 3-2 W-L 1 Sv 4.68 ERA 32.2 IP 35 H 17 R 8 BB 44 K .265 avg agaist. 1.32 WHIP And...the ML record with 21 Ks in one game. Now, the question has to be asked: Did his long outing (161 pitches) earlier factor into his career-ending injury? What do you think? |

Does the game really simulate that beyond just tiring the guy? Somehow I think it is in an unfortunate coincidence but then again I don't try to blow them out either to test my theory

JA, I believe that the game is programmed where injuries are more likely to occur when a pitcher is tired than when he's rested. I'm not sure if there's some sort of PAP system whereby an accumulation of IP while fatigued will increase the chance of a devastating injury.
My guess is that if lgkeeper would keep him past 130 in a blowout, then this probably wasn't the first time Foppert had been pitched well beyond 100 pitches. That pattern of usage, combined with the 160+ pitch day, would increase the likelihood of a catestrophic injury. |
