Whiskey had an off season regimen of doing at least 20 or so 40 ounce curls (see avatar!!) every day to increase his arm strength.

June 1, 1902

St. Louis continued their dominance of the AL, but were only 15-12 in May. Baltimore and Chicago separated themselves from the pack, even if just slightly, but they remain 6-games off the lead.

The Beaneaters remained a solid club through May, going 16-11 on the month, but the real story was the defending NL champion Philadelphia Phillies, who went 17-10 on the month and tied Boston for the NL lead. However, the Phillies suffered a major blow when last season's BOTY "Dark Horse" Allen was hit in the head by a pitch. He is expected to miss at least 2 months of play while spending time in a Philadelphia hospital. The blow came on a pitch from 1901 ROTY Bryan Rayes of Cincinnati. An ugly brawl ensued, and several other players were forced to see local doctors after the game, mainly for scrapes, but there was at least one concussion. Rayes was allowed to stay in the game, but he was knocked down by Phillies' starter Tony Hamline upon his next trip to the plate. The 24-year-old Rayes must have been shaken up, because he allowed a career-high 6 walks in the game, en route to a 6-3 loss that dropped his personal record to 6-5. Overall, the Cincinnati Reds played well this month, and they are in third place. St. Louis and Pittsburgh fared better this month, but they are both still firmly entrenched in the cellar.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Willie Verdros, 2B, Cleveland Blues - Willie has been one of the few bright spots in Cleveland, but he hit .372 in May with 17 RBI and 10 runs scored.

NL - "Professor" Isman, RF, Brooklyn Superbas - The Professor hit .360 for Brooklyn with 17 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - "Whopper" Alberson, Detroit Tigers - Alberson was 6-1 with a 2.03 ERA in May, keeping the slumping Tigers afloat in the AL.

NL - Matt Bowden, New York Giants - Earning back-to-back POTM awards for the Giants, Bowden was 5-2 with a 1.29 ERA and 3 shutouts in May.

American League Standings

St. Louis (A) 35 20 .636 -

July 1, 1902

June was a wild month in the National League. The Phillies went just 13-13, but wrested first place from the slumping Beaneaters. Boston went 11-15 on the month, slipping to third. With Philadelphia holding on to first, it must frighten other NL teams to know that the Phillies' star "Dark Horse" Allen is expected to return to the lineup by the end of July.

Brooklyn was the hottest team in June. The Superbas went 18-8, leapfrogging Boston and placing themselves just one game behind the mighty Phillies. They strung together a 12-game winning streak that lasted from June 4-17. The Cubs had a solid 15-11 record in June, and they are only 3 games off the lead.

In the AL, St. Louis had another average month, going just 14-12, but they managed to hold on to the division lead. Detroit went 17-9, and the Tigers are currently tied with Baltimore for second place, just 5 games behind the Browns.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Terrence Bakula, CF, Philadelphia Athletics - The 22-year-old outfielder is making a name for himself after an ugly start to the season. Bakula hit .379 with 19 RBI, 16 runs scored and 12 stolen bases in June.

NL - Joe Careswell, RF, St. Louis Cardinals - Joe hit .347 with 18 RBI and 14 runs scored. He leads the Cards in most offensive categories.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Richard Stennett, Detroit Tigers - Earning another POTM award for Detroit, Stennett went 4-1 with a 1.84 ERA.

NL - Glyn Keifer, Pittsburgh Pirates - Keifer has improved as the season has progressed. In June, he was 5-2 with a 1.71 ERA.

American League Standings

St. Louis (A) 49 32 .605 -
Baltimore 44 37 .543 5.0
Detroit 44 37 .543 5.0
Chicago (A) 41 40 .506 8.0
Philadelphia (A) 39 42 .481 10.0
Boston (A) 38 43 .469 11.0
Cleveland 36 45 .444 13.0
Washington 33 48 .407 16.0

National League Standings

Philadelphia (N) 46 35 .568 -
Brooklyn 45 36 .556 1.0
Boston (N) 44 37 .543 2.0
Chicago (N) 43 38 .531 3.0
New York 41 40 .506 5.0
Cincinnati 40 41 .494 6.0
Pittsburgh 33 48 .407 13.0
St. Louis (N) 32 49 .395 14.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Allen backed up a strong May with an even better June. The 19-year-old catcher hit .398 in June with 5 RBI and 13 runs scored. He currently leads the American League with a .378 batting average. He is third in the AL with an .881 OPS, and his 43 runs scored is good for 6th in the league.

You can view the league reports here!!

This will be a temporary home until the league nears 1946 and prepares for being an online league. These pages will be updated periodically - at least once per season.

Wide-open just doesn't do justice to the National League in 1902. After another solid month by Brooklyn, a rebound by Boston and average performance by Philadelphia, there is a three-way tie for first. Meanwhile, Cincinnati is only 2 games out, and Chicago is just 3 back. This goes back to the beginning of the season when I said it looked like this would be a tight race all season long.

"Dark Horse" Allen may have returned just in time for the Phillies. He went 2-for-4 on July 23rd with 2 runs scored and an RBI. This was his first game back after a scary beanball incident. Even with the solid first game, he hit only .250 in 8 games in July. Brooklyn's Nicholas Lawton is hitting .326 with 43 RBI, and Brad Jersey is quietly leading a solid pitching staff with his 17-6 record and 2.46 ERA. The Superbas are winning despite the loss of rightfielder "Professor" Isman for most of the month with severe leg pain. Boston shortstop James Oliva came alive in July, spurring the Beaneaters on with a .339 average and 17 RBI.

In the AL, St. Louis suffered through a 7-game losing streak, but they continue to lead the league by 5 games over Detroit.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Chris Nilsmark, LF, Detroit Tigers - He hit .364 with 18 RBI and a whopping 22 runs scored.

NL - James Oliva, SS, Boston Beaneaters - He hit .339 with 17 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Raymond Gindler, St. Louis Browns - Had only a 4-2 record, but an amazing 0.83 ERA. Three of his wins were shutouts. His record suffered due to the team's difficult month.

NL - Bryan Rayes, Cincinnati Reds - Came back from the Allen beanball incident and had his best month of the year, going 5-1 with an 0.82 ERA.

American League Standings

St. Louis (A) 65 45 .591 -
Detroit 60 50 .545 5.0
Baltimore 58 52 .527 7.0
Boston (A) 57 53 .518 8.0
Philadelphia (A) 54 56 .491 11.0
Chicago (A) 50 60 .455 15.0
Cleveland 49 61 .445 16.0
Washington 47 63 .427 18.0

National League Standings

Boston (N) 60 50 .545 -
Brooklyn 60 50 .545 -
Philadelphia (N) 60 50 .545 -
Cincinnati 58 52 .527 2.0
Chicago (N) 57 53 .518 3.0
New York 52 58 .473 8.0
Pittsburgh 50 60 .455 10.0
St. Louis (N) 43 67 .391 17.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - He hit .361 with 13 RBI (his highest monthly total of the season) and 13 runs scored. He's batting solely out of the #3 spot for the Blues. He still has the highest batting average in either league at .374. With only one month left in the season, he is challenging the batting marks set last season of .351 in the AL and .364 in the NL.

If the rest of the Blues didn't stink he'd have even more R's and RBI's. Hopefully he'll want so much $ when his contract is up (BTW when is that) that he'll go FA!!!

Well, in an attempt to make this league as realistic as possible, I've turned finances off until 1946... So, Whiskey will be in Cleveland until he's traded or retires... Hopefully, they'll build a contender around him... They got the top draft pick this season, and they'll get another high one in 1903... I believe they have the #1 farm system right now too...

Ideally, I'd keep finances off until free agency really began in the 70's, but that's something that'll have to be discussed when the online league version of TWB kicks off...

September 4, 1902

There was a lot of excitement about the final month of the season with five teams very much in pennant contention in the NL. After half of August had passed, much of that excitement had waned. Philadelphia began the month at 8-2, while Brooklyn lost 6 of their first 7 games. On August 6th, Boston began a 9-game losing streak that all but eliminated them from the race. The Phillies went 20-10 from August 1st through their final game on September 4th. That record helped them capture their second NL pennant.

In the American League, no one managed to close in on the St. Louis Browns. They led the league from wire-to-wire, and they had at least a 5-game lead at the end of every month this season. St. Louis fans were thrilled to have the Browns in town this season (after playing 1901 in Milwaukee), especially with the last place performance of the NL Cardinals.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Ryley Gerbeck, RF, Chicago White Stockings - He hit .366 with 13 RBI and 11 runs scored for the 6th place White Stockings.

NL - Jason Tedford, 2B, Chicago Cubs - He had a great month, hitting .398 with 20 RBI and 13 runs scored. He almost single-handedly spurred the Cubs into a near-pennant race.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - "Whopper" Alberson, Detroit Tigers - He went 5-1 with a 1.49, but the Tigers were unable to offer enough of a challenge to St. Louis for the pennant.

NL - David Smith, St. Louis Cardinals - He went 5-1 with a 1.87 ERA as the ace of the last-place Cards.

American League Standings

St. Louis (A) 81 59 .579 - Won AL Pennant
Detroit 76 64 .543 5.0
Boston (A) 72 68 .514 9.0
Philadelphia (A) 72 68 .514 9.0
Baltimore 68 72 .486 13.0
Chicago (A) 66 74 .471 15.0
Washington 63 77 .450 18.0
Cleveland 62 78 .443 19.0

National League Standings

Philadelphia (N) 80 60 .571 - Won NL Pennant
Cincinnati 75 65 .536 5.0
Brooklyn 73 67 .521 7.0
Chicago (N) 72 68 .514 8.0
Boston (N) 71 69 .507 9.0
New York 65 75 .464 15.0
Pittsburgh 65 75 .464 15.0
St. Louis (N) 59 81 .421 21.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - He hit .347 with 8 RBI and 14 runs scored. In 11 September at-bats, he hit .455 with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored. He hit the first home run of his career on August 9th against the Philadelphia A's. He hit his 2nd on August 24th against Washington. He finished the season with the following stats:

.371, 2 HR, 43 RBI, 74 R, 120 G, 434 AB, 161 H, 10 2B, 6 3B, 33 K, 47 BB, 29 SB, 20 CS, .435 OBP, .435 SLG, .871 OPS, .980 FLD%, 2 PB, threw out 33 of 100 runners for 33%

It must be a conspiracy Good... a new league could use a conspiracy

Btw, 1903 is about to start & Cleveland drafted 2nd in the ammy... they have the best farm system around... and they boast the #1, 3 and 4 prospects overall... one hitter and 2 SP's...

also, in trying to keep the league as realistic as possible, I edit the ratings (not talents) of all amateurs age 23 and up... I also edit a few younger guys... this will help ensure a few young guys make the big leagues every year, instead of all going to A-ball...

Whiskey Allen announces that he will no longer talk to reporters or writers. After getting shafted by them in the 1901 ROY vote, he took it in stride and had a superb 1902 year that he looked like he had Batter of the Year locked. But NO!!! he once again got the shaft by the Baseball Writers Association!!!

"If'n I ain't gonna git no respeck from them that riter's then's I's ain't gonna gif them'ns back any teither. They'ens kan take all'ems thems pensils they's rites wif an' put-em whars the sun don'tens shine, cause they'ems gittin nuttin froms my's muth frum tis points on", said Whiskey Allen in what was promised to be the last time he would ever again talk to reporters.

1903

After two seasons, the AL and NL have both seen only one champion. The Philadelphia Phillies have won both NL pennants, and the St. Louis Browns (formerly the Milwaukee Brewers) have won both AL pennants. This has initiated discussions about which team is better – The Phillies or the Browns. In response, the leaders of these two leagues have agreed to organize a "World Series" that will pit the two division champions against each other for the title of the best team in baseball. This will be a best-of-nine series, with the winner taking home a handsome trophy along with the title of "World Champion."

In hopes of garnering more fan support, several teams made changes over the winter. The Baltimore Orioles made the biggest change by moving to New York City and renaming themselves the Highlanders. They will play in Hilltop Park, and will be cross-league rivals with the hometown Giants.

The Washington Senators will move into a new stadium this season. Beautiful Griffith Stadium will hopefully attract more fans for a team that has finished near the bottom of the division in both of the AL's two seasons.

Three teams have changed their team names. The Cleveland Blues will now be known as the Broncos. The Boston Americans are now the Pilgrims, and the Chicago White Stockings have shortened their title to the White Sox.

Ancestors Added:

None for 1903.

May 1, 1903

The 1903 season started later than previous seasons. Opening Day was held on April 9th. Both Philadelphia teams jumped out to early leads this season. The two-time defending NL champion Phillies have the best record in baseball at 15-3. The Brooklyn Superbas also began well at 11-7, but they are already 4 games behind the Phillies. The Giants are only 5-14 and find themselves already 10.5 games out of first.

In the AL, the Athletics hold a slim 1.5-game lead over the 2-time AL champion St. Louis Browns. Both the Boston Pilgrims and Cleveland Broncos have begun the season with winning records. The Broncos are one of the AL's hotter teams after having won 7 of their last 9 games.
