Boston 7, Fort Wayne 5 A big game by Boston's Cap Anson leads the White Stockings to victory..... New York 9, Washington 7 ...but Fort Wayne clinches anyway, as a six-run ninth inning brings New York back for the victory. Philadelphia 10, Cleveland 2 Troy 7, Chicago 6 Troy was outhit 20-8 in this game and still managed to win. Obviously, there's so great intangibles/veteran leadership there. With three games left, it's: Philadelphia 17-10 Troy 15-12 Philly's magic number is two.

The games that still have an impact: Cleveland 17, Philadelphia 3 John Radcliff led the way with five RBIs for the Forest Citys in this one. Chicago 15, Troy 6 The Haymakers missed their chance to gain ground, and now have their backs to the wall. Standings: Philadelphia 17-11 Troy 15-13

Sunday, 5/5/1871 Games
Cleveland 8, Philadelphia 1 The one was never close, as the Athletics were held to four hits. Troy 7, Chicago 6 An eighth-inning sacrifice fly by Gat Stires won this one for the Haymakers, who led 3-0, then trailed 5-3, then led 6-5 before Chicago tied the game in the seventh. That means the standings are: Philadelphia 17-12 Troy 16-13 with one game left to play. And that game is.... Philadelphia at Troy. Should be a thriller....

Monday 5/6/1871
Philadelphia at Troy Starting Lineups Philadelphia CF Harry Wright (0-12-.247) SS Dickie Pearce (0-13-.230) 1B Cal McVey (0-19-.450) RF Al Reach (0-24-.346) LF Steve King (0-28-.415) C Elmer White (0-29-.315) 2B Frank Fleet (0-19-.239) 3B Steve Bellan (0-15-.302) P Bobby Mathews (0-10-.200) (11-7, 2.77) Troy LF John McMullin (1-12-.260) CF Charlie Hodes (0-12-.226) C Doug Allison (0-10-.364) RF Gat Stires (1-20-.336) 3B Fred Waterman (0-29-.336) SS George Wright (0-18-.286) 2B John Hatfield (0-22-.223) 1B Joe Simmons (0-14-.176) P Dick McBride (0-9-.229) (16-13, 3.57) The Athletics wasted no time in getting to McBride, as they scored three runs in the top of the first, with a two-run triple by Al Reach as the key hit. Troy managed to counter with a leadoff hit in the bottom of the inning, but Charlie Hodes grounded into a 5-4-3 double play, and Mathews escaped the inning with no further trouble. The second inning was uneventful, as each team went down in order. The Athletics added another run in the top of the third on a Cal McVey triple which was followed by a sacrifice fly. However, Troy also got on the board in the third, as John Hatfield began the inning with a double, then scored after advancing on consecutive ground outs. Philadelphia then made it a 6-1 lead in the fourth on extra base hits by Steve Bellan and Harry Wright. Things were beginning to look bleak for Troy, and when the heart of their lineup failed to score in the bottom of the fourth, it certainly wasn't looking any better. An Al Reach double led to yet another Philadelphia run in the top of the fifth, making it 7-1. The mood on the Philadelphia bench was celebratory, while the partisan Troy crowd was turning ugly. When John McMullin struck out with two runners on to end the inning in the bottom of the fifth, he was greeted by a chorus of boos and catcalls. Even when Troy scored a run in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-2, the crowd seemed unappeased. Things were looking bad in Troy. The fans' fears proved well-founded, as the Athletics piled on three more runs in the top of the seventh to make it a 10-2 game. The Haymakers truly came apart in the eighth, as they committed four errors, allowing three more Philadelphia runs to make it a 13-2 game. The Athletics added two more in the ninth, as Troy obviously just wanted the game to end. They did tack on four meaningless runs at the end of the game to make a 15-6 final, but Philadelphia obviously proved that they were, for this day at least, the best team in the NA2.

Thanks for the kind words.... things may slow down a bit over the next few days, but it's not because I'm not paying attention to this league. I'm just trying to put together a Win Shares spreadsheet using CommishJoe's exporter... and it's proving to be quite an undertaking.

1871 World's Series Preview:
Philadelphia Athletics (18-12) vs. Fort Wayne Kekiongas (18-12) Philadelphia made it this far on the strength of... well, their veteran leadership. (No, really!) Harry Wright, Dickie Pearce, Al Reach and Steve King were four of the solid hitters in Philadelphia's lineup, and all were more experienced than most of the players in the NA. The Athletics' 210 runs were second only to Chicago, making up for a pitching staff that was only adequate. Bobby Mathews was a solid pitcher, but Joe McDermott, the Athletics' alternate pitcher, had a 4.63 ERA. Philadelphia was led by the .463 hitting of superstar Cal McVey, who has guaranteed a victory over the Kekiongas in the series. Fort Wayne was a completely pitching-driven team. George Zettlein was one of the league's key superstars, which is good for Fort Wayne since their batting average (.264) was worst in the big leagues. For comparison, Philadelphia's team average was .310, and Fort Wayne's best hitter was Mike McGeary (.298). Also, Zettlein was on a cold streak just at the season's end, making the Kekiongas a big underdog.

FYI - anyone who's been reading....
There seems to be a problem with getting the postseason simmed. If anyone knows anything about this bug or possible workarounds, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to freak out if I lose all this work.

Looks like the work may be lost. If this is the case, I'm probably done solo simming for a while. I just can't deal with losing all of these hours of work time after time.
Granted, the last time it was because of my hard drive, not the game, but this is just enormously frustrating. Any ideas or suggestions for a workaround would be greatly appreciated.
