First Half Review

The Brooklyn Superbas have bounced back from their 7th place finish from a year ago (65-75) to take a two game lead over the defending champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Brooklyn has scored the 5th most runs in the league, and given up the 3rd least. Fourth overall pick Jim St. Vrain is 6-7 with a 2.93 ERA.

Over in the American League, the Orioles are showing promise after their 6th place finish last year (67-73). The team is being led by offense, as they rank first in batting average, 2nd in walks, 1st in stolen bases, and 1st in runs scored.

Pop Foster is on a crushing pace, as he has 9 homeruns at the break. Socks Seybold holds the league record with 12 homeruns. Foster also has a shot for the triple crown, as he is first in average, first in homeruns, and 3rd in RBI, 3 behind Baltimore SS Bill Keister.

Cy Young is showing age is just a number, the 35 year old has a league leading 1.56 ERA.

Third round pick George "Deerfoot" Barclay is having an impressive rookie season with a .288 batting average and 26 steals. First overall pick Addie Joss is 7-7 with a 2.98 ERA for the Cleveland Bronchos.

Breaking News- 7/21/02

The New York Giants have just confirmed reports that Starting Pitcher Christy Mathewson is on the trade block. Matthewson, 21, won the National League pitcher of the year award and National League Rookie of the Year award last season going 20-9 with a 1.35 ERA. This season, Mathewson is 10-10 with a 2.06 ERA. Reports have it that the Giants are frustrated with the teams' 41-54 start. The Giants rank in the bottom 25% in all major offensive statistical categories, so offense could be their main priority.

Breaking News- 8/16/03

Bill Bernhard of the Philadelphia Athletics has just thrown the first no-hitter in hMLB history, as the Athletics defeated the Cleveland Bronchos 6-0. Bernhard needed just 69 pitches to get through the Indians batters. Unfortunately, two errors in the field (1B Harry Davis and SS Harry Lochhead) prevented Bernhard from getting the perfect game. All 27 outs were made by the fielders, as Bernhard failed to strike anyone out. Bernhard is now 19-12 on the year with a 2.28 ERA.

Playoff Race- 5 Games Left

With 5 games to go in the season, both Pennants are up for grabs once again. Over in the American League no one knows what will happen, as four teams are fighting for one spot. Philadelphia leads the way at 75-60 while Baltimore and Chicago both trail by 1 game. Detroit, not yet out of the picture, is 2 games back. Philadelphia and Chicago play the last day of the season.

Over in the National League, its a two team race. The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Brooklyn Superbas have been fighting for that pennant since the All-Star break. Pittsburgh is currently one game up with a record of 84-51. Brooklyn is 83-52. These two teams meet on the last day of the season if it comes down to it.

Playoff Race- 4 Games Left

Things only got more exciting in the American League after todays' games. Philadelphia lost to Washington 11-4, opening up the door for the other three teams, which each team gladly accepted. Detroit beat the Browns to move within 1 game (3-2), while Chicago beat Cleveland (4-1) and Baltimore beat Boston (3-1) to create a three way tie in the American League.

Over in the National League, each team missed out on a golden opportunity as the Pirates lost 6-5 to Cincinnati in 10 innings, while the Superbas lost 5-4 in 10 innings to Chicago. Pittsburgh is 1 game up with 4 to play.

Playoff Race- 3 Games Left

In the American League, Philadelphia beat St. Louis (9-3) to hold onto at least a tie for first in the league. Chicago was the team to join them at the top, as 23 year old 2B Zaza Harvey hit a walk off grand slam with two outs to put Chicago over Boston 4-1. Baltimore lost to Cleveland (4-3) to drop 1 game behind both teams, while the defending AL Champ's season is in serious doubt, as the Tigers lost to Washington 6-2.

In the National League, Pittsburgh took care of the Orphans easily (7-2), while Brooklyn lost a heartbreaker 4-3 in 12 innings against Cincinnati to fall two games back with just three to play

Playoff Race- 2 Games Left

The American League could not get anymore exciting, thanks to another great day of baseball. Division leaders Philadelphia and Chicago both lost, as the A's dropped one to Cleveland 9-6, while the White Sox lost to St. Louis 4-0. Baltimore took advantage of the opportunity, as they created another three way tie atop the AL, with their 8-1 beating of Detroit. The loss puts Detroit in an unfavorable position, two games back with just two to play. A win by any of the three teams eliminates Detroit.

In the National League Brooklyn failed to take control once again. The Superbas lost their 4th in a row, this time a 6-3 loss to Cincinnati. The good news is that Pittsburgh also lost 5-3 against Chicago to keep the Superbas hopes alive. They are two games back with two to play. A win by Pittsburgh, or a loss by Brooklyn eliminates them from contention.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Brooklyn Superbas will play a meaningless game tomorrow, as the Pirates won the Pennant today, their second in a row. The Pirates knocked off Philadelphia 9-8 as 3B Tommy Leach hit the game winning single in the bottom of the 9th.

Over in the American League it is still anyones game. Baltimore kept their magical season going by scoring 8 runs in the 9th to beat Detroit 13-7, eliminating Detroit from contention. The Chicago White Sox also won their game, a 4-2 victory over Washington. Philadelphia has fallen off the pace, as they lost 5-1 against Boston to fall one game behind Chicago and Baltimore.

Philadelphia and Chicago will play each other in Chicago to finish the season. Philadelphia has Bill Bernhard (22-13, 2.49 ERA) on the mound while Chicago will look to Clark Griffith (23-12, 2.26 ERA) in what is easily the most anticipated regular season game in league history.

The Orioles host the Washington Senators to finish out their season, as they will throw Stan Yearkes on the mound (17-13, 3.49 ERA) against Washington's Bill Carrick (14-20, 3.78 ERA).

Playoff Race- Last Day

The drama was high for the last day of the season, as three teams had a shot to win the AL Pennant. The biggest game, Philadelphia @ Chicago, controlled the destiny for all three teams.

Philadelphia was able to knock off Chicago on the road 5-2, to keep their hopes alive. Reigning AL Batter of the Year Socks Seybold hit a 3 run homerun in the top of the 7th inning that proved to be the difference maker. If the Orioles won, they would take home the pennant. However if they lost, a hectic 3 team playoff would then ensue.

Unfortunately, there would be no hectic 3 game playoff as the Baltimore Orioles took care of the Senators 5-3 to capture the American League Pennant with a record of 78-62. Not bad for a team who finished 6th in the AL with a 67-73 record last season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles will get set to play the World Series.

1902 World Series Review

The Pittsburgh Pirates are back on familiar grounds, as their pitching staff will be put to the test against the slugging Baltimore Orioles. The Pirates, whos 4 man rotation of Jesse Tannehill, Deacon Phillippe, Jack Chesbro, and Rube Waddell cannot be matched anywhere. Period. The rotation is so deep that Waddell, a 25 year old star in the making, has a career 38-27 record with an ERA of 2.16 each season and will not even be starting in the Series, due to the 3 man rotation rules. Pittsburgh had an all-around great season as they finished 2nd in the league with a .259 batting average, 2nd in runs scored (581), 1st in team ERA (2.38), 3rd in opponents average (.230), T-5th in homeruns allowed (18), 3rd in walks allowed (198), and 2nd in runs allowed (448). Reigning NL Batter of the Year Honus Wagner lead the offense with a .333 average (lead the league), 3 homeruns, 75 RBI (4th in the NL), 85 runs (1st in the NL), and 45 steals (9th in the NL).

The Pirates finished 2nd in average and runs to one team, the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles were a team built around offense, definetely not pitching. Ranked first in team batting average (.264), T-1st in team walks (305), 1st in stolen bases (260), and first in runs scored (616), the Orioles offense is one to be reckoned with. Mike Donlin leads this powerful offense, as he had an average of .325 (1st in AL), 7 homeruns (3rd in AL), 82 RBI (2nd in AL), 84 runs (2nd in AL), and 35 steals.

Prediction: It's a true test of pitching vs. hitting, but unlike the Orioles 16th ranked team ERA, Pittsburgh can also hit. Pirates in 5.
