more dunn than adam dunn
Have been simming for about 10 seasons now and I swear to god, this guy here appears to be the spitting image of dunn. Anyone know of any other players in baseball history he resembles, if any? His profile strikes me as fairly remarkable - Jack Clark is about the only guy I can remember with stats even close to this besides Dunn...

That's great! I don't usually see the AI playing guys that hit for such low averages, but it's great when it happens. He should run more to truly be Dunn though... need some 12sb/9cs seasons
By my calculations this guy had 323 singles, 370 doubles, and 311 HRs. That's pretty cool!

heh
Well, the ai isn't playing him - I am. . What's interesting is that I've had this guy leading off for about 7 seasons now, and he's consistently led the league or been near the top in runs scored, which is doubtless a result of his insanely high walk totals, hr power, and the run producers who follow him in the lineup, despite him having zero speed and a batting average lower than nearly every active major leaguer.
Anyway, it's gratifying to see the obp > ba thing proven in such an obvious way, even though I've seen it a million times before, it's especially clear here. I wish the Mets really had this player, maybe we'd win a fricking game. -loc |

It truly warms my heart to see the value of the lowly walk recognized and utilized in such a fashion.
Kinda reminds me of when Kirby Puckett was asked about HIS walk totals....he said, and I quote..."They pay me to hit, not to walk." If you consider of his .360 lifetime OBP, only .032 was as a result of walking, that is something. As a matter of fact (as he warms to the subject) your player, with a lifetime batting average 88 points less(!) than Puckett, has a HIGHER lifetime OBP. ....and slugging percentage, and OPS (of course). Looks to me that either (a) Kirby Puckett is hugely overrated, or (b) You got yerself a Hall of Famer. |

More fun with overrated, non-walking bozos.
Go to www.baseball-reference.com, and look up Luis Aparicio. He was the quintessential lead off hitter for the White Sox, from 1956-1973. Over 10 thousand at bats, a nice, loooong career. .....with a lifetime OBP of .311 Ouch. Sounds like a Met, to me. HEY, GUESS WHAT!!!! He never, EVER scored a hundred runs in a season! He walked more than 53 times just once in his career, and was a lifetime .262 hitter. It is amazing how freakin' stupid managers were back then. I tell ya, the best leadoff hitter ever (besides Rickey, of course) may well have been Wade Boggs...if they had decided to hit him there. He got on base over 300 times one year....hmmm....in SEVEN DIFFERENT YEARS! Barry Bonds has only done it 5 times. |

uuugh
Yeah, sadly, I know all about Aparicio. God, was he ever overrated. Even if his defense was as insanely good as it has been claimed, I don't see it counterbalancing his pathetic offense. If you see any winshares on this guy, lemme know, I just went rooting around for some with no luck.
On the subject of Ron Vavra (my walk-happy player), yeah, Boggs is actually my model for having these slow but incredibly patient hitters as leadoff batters. I remember back when I had Micro League BB and even Pursue the Pennant, I always would get Boggs and stick him at the top of the order. Never failed, unless the opponent had Rickey leading off... -loc |

I've got Dunn on my team... last year he hit leadoff, drew about 110 walks, hit 25 or so HRs and scored about 115 runs. This season I signed a speedy CF to hit leadoff and I'm struggling with where to put Dunn. Sounds like I should move him back to leadoff!!!

I don't give a hairy rats ass about how fast a runner is.
Running speed is a bonus, at the top of the order. It is SO much more critical for the ol' OBP to be high. This will KILL my Cardinals this year...they don't have **** at the top of the order....but then have Renteria, Edmunds, Pujols, Rolen, and now Reggie Sanders. Maybe then can teach Renteria how to draw a walk? He sure can hit. |
