VOTE: Time Warp HOF Induction 1939

1936 Initial Ballot Results, 1937 Results, 1938 Results

Elected to the RL HOF in 1939 were George Sisler, Eddie Collins, Willie Keeler & Lou Gehrig by the BBWAA and Cap Anson and Buck Ewing by the VC.

All players who received at least 5% of votes on last ballot were retained for this ballot. I added players with HOF Standards scores of 40-44. I also added players who became eligible for the ballot in 1939 (retired after 1933 season).

All players not receiving 5% of votes on this ballot will be removed.

Players who have been retired for 20 years are not eligible for this ballot, but since many of them are just becoming eligible by my HOF Standards scores, I will do this: If a player is over the 20 year mark, he will be removed from the ballot after 2 unsuccessful bids for induction. Once 1946 gets here and the VC is in effect, the regular 20-year rule will be used.

Vote for as many or as few as you want. Max votes are 10.

HOF Standard: 50 is considered an average HOF'er. 100 is max.

Matthews (I think this is one I should have to justify, considering his HOF standard. My reasons for having him in:
5 Gold Gloves (I put a big emphasis on defense)
2 BOY awards)
2 WS wins
A great combo of power (twice led the lg in SLG) and Speed (3x led the lg in SBs)
Haggan (should be a lock, btw)

No, just think he's a bit overrated, Mets. You say Ditty is robbed by being out, while I say Jed Burke is robbed by not getting in the class of '38. Compare the two and I just don't know how anyone could think that Jed from the deadball era wasn't better than Ditty who got a big chunk of those HR and RBI in the 20s. I see a .851 OPS vs. a sub-.800 one. And of course one of the Clean Sox who wasn't trying to toss the 1919 (and 1917 and 1920) series.

Ok, let me try another angle to convince people....comparing Ditty side-by-side to John "Pops" Falise, who was shoo-in into the Hall (and had 3 more years than Ditty after the deadball era when he won all his BOY Awards), Cohan, and Burke:

Code:
PA: Ditty - 10814 Falise - 11298 Cohan - 9626 Burke - 9154
Average: Ditty - .309 Falise - .302 Cohan - .353 Burke - .345
OBP: Ditty - .351 Falise - .355 Cohan - .390 Burke - .409
OPS: Ditty - .797 Falise - .865 Cohan - .825 Burke - .851
Hits: Ditty - 3131 Falise - 3152 Cohan - 3208 Burke - 2950
2b: Ditty - 665 Falise - 554 Cohan - 266 Burke - 265
3b: Ditty - 54 Falise - 464 Cohan - 174 Burke - 258
HR: Ditty - 206 Falise - 236 Cohan - 43 Burke - 18
RBI: Ditty - 1628 Falise - 1693 Cohan - 1161 Burke - 1055
Runs: Ditty - 1313 Falise - 1661 Cohan - 1168 Burke - 1228
SB: Ditty - 60 Falise - 45 Cohan - 59 Burke - 138
BOY: Ditty - 2 ('16,'22) Falise - 4('25-'28) Cohan - 1('18) Burke - 2('15)
Gold Gloves: Ditty - 4 Falise - 0 Cohan - 9 Burke - 1
Each player has advantages over the other, but that's the beauty of the process. You are allowed to vote for more than one player. The players don't need to be compared to each other. They are compared against standards for the Hall.

Just as in real life, that is a fact that a number of HOF voters will ignore. The seven people that didn't vote for Babe Ruth in the inaugural HOF selection most likely chose one player only (or had a personal dislike of Ruth).
