Little change found in either division's standings in June. Norfolk stretches their Eastern Division lead out to five games over Tampa. The Tomahawks put SP Brett Thomas (7-3, 2.75, WHIP 1.19) on the DL June 17 with bone chips in his elbow. He should return mid-month. Elsewhere in the East, Carolina C Mark Johnson (.332, 10 HR, 29 RBI, 31 R) will miss over a month after tearing his calf on June 9. Out West, it's still San Antonio by two games over Houston. Meanwhile, New Orleans RF Roger Seidl gets his 2000th hit off Memphis' Ryan Todd June 26. Seidl has hit .309 in his career, including 128 triples. Norfolk has lost their last eight games to keep Tampa's playoff hopes alive, two games back with two to play. The Clippers host the Ospreys, while the Tomahawks host the Flyers for the final weekend. Out West, San Antonio will be defending their championship after clinching the pennant with a 2-1 win over New Orleans yesterday. However, the Missions will not have their ace pitcher in the playoffs, as Jay Williams (17-8, 2.85, WHIP 1.19) goes down with a pulled rotator cuff on September 24. The Norfolk Clippers are in their seventh Confederate Series but the first since 1956. Led by three-time Manager of the Year Mark Erwin, Norfolk has homefield advantage in the series after a 44-37 season at Harbor Stadium. The Clippers ranked seventh in batting (.266) and homers (102) while fifth in scoring (744). To the three people that are actually following this thread
, I'm glad you're enjoying it, but the pace will be slowing considerably from this point. That's the bad news. The good news is the reason why: I'm going to be jumping into a managerial role a decade earlier than the original plan (just can't wait any longer), so there will soon be another thread, linked from my signature, detailing the week-to-week (or occasionally day-to-day) travails of my CBA managing career. Hope you'll tune in for the other thread when it starts, and thanks for reading! ![]()

Offseason Recap 1956 Hurler of the Year Charlie Munford becomes the 25th member of the Confederate Baseball Association Hall of Fame. A five-time All-Star, Munford whiffed 2965 batters while collecting a record of 190-116 with a 3.24 ERA and three championship rings in seventeen seasons with Jacksonville, Nashville and San Antonio. (17 seasons, 190-116, 3.24, 2965 Ks, 1x HoY, 5x All-Star, 3x champ) Three solid "Second Look" candidates for next year: Eight-time All-Star LF Paul Speck retires at age 40 after eighteen seasons with Tampa, Dallas and Jacksonville. Speck hit .284 in his career with 274 homers, 1283 walks, 493 steals and a Slick Fielder award in 1968. [Yes. The walks and swipes make up for the low hit total.] Six-time All-Star SP Barney Maloy calls it quits at age 40 after striking out 3604 batters in his nineteen years with New Orleans, Atlanta, Houston and Norfolk. Maloy ended up with a 201-178 record and a 3.89 ERA to go with a championship ring from the Pelicans in 1951. [A relucant 'Yes', basically because of the whiffs.] Two-time MVP and 1959 Confederate Series MVP 1B Roy Seal hangs up his spikes at age 41. A nine-time All-Star with 3 Slick Fielders and 3 championships, Seal hit .290 with 288 homers, 1524 RBIs, 408 doubles and 350 steals in his nineteen-year career, fourteen with New Orleans. [Yes. Third-best career RBI total.] Three-time Manager of the Year Andrew Brasfield retires from Nashville after a twenty-three year run. Brasfield won championships with both teams he managed, 1951 with New Orleans and 1956 with Nashville. Andrew won five pennants in his career with a record of 1857-1873. The Hounds pick up rookie Blake Dotson. Four-time Manager of the Year Donnie Chancellor calls it a career after twenty years with Carolina. Chancellor led the Flyers to a pair of CBA titles in 1955 and 1968. He ends his run with a 1667-1575 record. The Flyers' new skipper is Jeremy McGrath. Memphis saw enough of Aaron Noles during last year's 101-loss season, and sign newcomer Dave Boger. The Blues also get the only $5 million share via revenue sharing. Atlanta SP Don Downey (10-13, 3.21) gets the only notable arbitration award, up from $4.3 million to $5.1 million. Free Agency Highlights February 5 - Defending champion San Antonio picks up 3B Scott Hass (.268, 26 HR, 75 RBI, 102 R, 130 BB, 20 SB) from Nashville for six years at $12.1 million. February 7 - C Alexander Roundtree (.347, 12 HR, 83 RBI, 82 BB) leaves the champion Missions to sign a three-year deal for $9.2 million for Tampa. February 13 - They signed his favorite catcher, so Hurler of the Year Don Tapper (19-8, 2.89, WHIP 1.05) had to leave San Antonio for Tampa too, signing for four years at nearly $20 million. February 23 - Nashville gives 1B Benjamin Gordon (.319, 8 HR, 82 RBI, 21 2Bs) $6.2 million for four years. March 2 - Rule 5 Draft Miami (from DAL) - MR Millard Bontrager, 3.34 ERA in 56 2/3 IP for AAA Little Rock

I've been following this thread everyday since finding it about 3 weeks ago. It's made me start up my own fictional league just like it.
Great job on good luck with whatever hapless team you take the helm of. Rahhja |

The Ospreys won thirteen straight starting April 14. Out West, Houston is one game up on both San Antonio and Dallas, but last-place New Orleans is just 3 1/2 back. Both leaders at the beginning of May are now 2 1/2 games back... In the East, Carolina went 12-14 last month to fall to third place behind Jacksonville, with Tampa just one game out of the top spot. The Flyers did celebrate a milestone on May 14, though, when SS Dave Powell got his 2000th hit off Dallas' John McMasters. A .319 hitter in his career, Powell had a 24-game hitting streak snapped just last April at age 37. The Ospreys hold their lead despite being plagued by injuries. May 15 saw CF Matt Alexander (.240, 5 HR, 26 RBI, 6 2Bs) break his ribs diving for a ball; he will return late this month. Four days later, SS Jonathan Hodges (.304, 2 HR, 18 RBI, 22 R, 6 SB) goes down with a ruptured tricep tendon. Hodges may return by the end of June. Out West, Houston played 13-14 ball in May, falling from first to fourth behind leading San Antonio; Dallas lurks one game back and Nashville is just two games out. The Buffaloes aren't standing pat, however, acquiring SP Scott Paulson (2-5, 3.28, WHIP 1.32) from New Orleans for LF Dave Watkins (.329 in 71 AB) and a minor leaguer. Western Division Batter of the Month: 2B Rudy "Godzilla" Carr - Hit .365 with 9 HR and 24 RBI Western Division Pitcher of the Month: Richard Bays (NWO) - Went 2-1 with a 0.84 ERA Eastern Division Batter of the Month: CF Matt Kirk (CAR) - Hit .418 with 4 2Bs, 3 3Bs, 4 HR, 11 RBI and 17 R, including three homers at Dallas on May 26 Eastern Division Pitcher of the Month: Frank Wilson (JAX) - Went 2-2 with a 1.62 ERA, OAVG .217 Western Division Standings San Antonio... 27 - 20 .574 - Dallas........ 27 - 22 .551 1 Nashville..... 26 - 23 .531 2 Houston....... 25 - 23 .521 2.5 New Orleans... 20 - 29 .408 8 Memphis....... 19 - 30 .388 9 Eastern Division Standings Jacksonville.. 31 - 19 .620 - Tampa......... 29 - 19 .604 1 Carolina...... 29 - 22 .569 2.5 Norfolk....... 22 - 28 .440 9 Miami......... 20 - 29 .408 10.5 Atlanta....... 19 - 30 .388 11.5

A two-horse race is developing in the Western Division as San Antonio and Dallas are tied for the top spot. Both teams made deals to try and gain an edge in this Texas-sized battle: On June 3, the Drifters acquired C Mark Johnson (.343 in 169 AB, 5 HR, 31 RBI) and MR Evan Becnel (4.71 in 36 1/3 IP, WHIP 1.82) from Carolina for MR Terry Bingham (3.80 in 47 1/3 IP, WHIP 1.16) and C Gary Armitage (.250, OBP .431 in AAA). Meanwhile, today the Missions send 2B Matt Clayton (.302, 7 HR, 27 RBI) and $200,000 to New Orleans for SP Richard Bays (7-5, 2.27, WHIP 1.25). The Pelicans suffer a big blow on June 4 when RF Roger Seidl (.300, 5 HR, 23 RBI) tears his rib cage while diving for a ball. The $16.7 million veteran is out until at least August. In the East, after a six-game losing streak, Tampa has won ten of their last thirteen to take a one game lead over Jacksonville with Carolina still lurking in third, two games out. Elsewhere... Miami 2B Jonathan "Mr. Miracle" Ralls gets his 2000th hit in style at Norfolk on June 29, hitting a two-run homer off Calvin Thayer. A three-time MVP, Ralls has hit .292 in his career with 338 taters and 1422 walks. Western Division Batter of the Month: LF Dave Watkins (NWO) - Hit .402 with 7 HR and 21 RBI Western Division Pitcher of the Month: Elmer Sexton (DAL) - Went 4-0 with a 1.76 ERA Eastern Division Batter of the Month: CF David Powell (TAM) - Hit .313 with 8 HR and 20 RBI Eastern Division Pitcher of the Month: Derrick Real (TAM) - Went 5-0 with a 1.88 ERA Western Division Standings San Antonio... 42 - 33 .560 - Dallas........ 43 - 34 .558 - Houston....... 38 - 38 .500 4.5 Nashville..... 36 - 41 .468 7 New Orleans... 34 - 43 .442 9 Memphis....... 32 - 45 .416 11 Eastern Division Standings Tampa......... 45 - 31 .592 - Jacksonville.. 45 - 33 .577 1 Carolina...... 44 - 34 .564 2 Norfolk....... 40 - 37 .519 5.5 Miami......... 33 - 44 .429 12.5 Atlanta....... 29 - 48 .377 16.5
