Cleveland really underperformed... or else the BWAA just didn't realize that they weren't that good.
Philly surprised a lot of folks, eh? Also, the link isn't working to see the stats.

I'll check into why it won't connect. (Fixed now...don't know what was wrong) As far as Cleveland, the pitchers just didn't perform as expected...the hitters didn't, either. Joss, Stan Coveleskie Lemon, Garcia and Wynn were only average...Narleski poor. Rosen, Boudreau, Colavito and Trosky really underperformed. The Phillies got great pitching from Alexander and Roberts. Good power and timely hitting from Chuck Klein, Dick Allen and Mike Schmidt. Del Ennis has a solid season as well...267 BA 33 doubles 18 HRs and 77 rbis. Richie Ashburn had a fine season. 2B Fresco Thompson and Larry Bowa were excellent, too. They would have won easily, if Tug McGraw, Curt Shilling (8-9 4.28) and Steve Carlton (7-12 4.33) had performed up to their potential. Boston Braves also bombed out. They suffered from terrible hitting (.231 BA...18 points worse than the next lowest)...staff starters very good, but got no batting support and no help from fair to average relievers like Garber, McMahon and Bedrosian. Starters:Spahn 8-11 2.58, Burdette 10-12 3.02, Niekro 11-9 2.84 and Maddux 17-8 2.61. Smoltz (5-14 4.36), Glavine (6-13 3.55) and Sain (4-8 3.63) fizzled. If Billy Pierce (2-4 4.35), Red Faber (4-6 3.53) and Gary Peters (3-4 3.50) had better years, they might have beaten the Yankees. I think the Chisox overachieved in the standings. Frank Thomas, Eddie Collins and Joe Jackson really stood out...and Magglio Ordonez and Luke Appling had solid seasons. Last edited by Eugene Church; 06-24-2007 at 01:42 AM. |

What a race it was!! Only two games separated the top four clubs in the National League. It went down to the last day. Gary Nolan and Cincinnati crushed the hopes of the Philadelphia Phillies with a 5-0 triumph in the first game of Sunday's twinbill. The New York Giants made the champion Pittsburgh Pirates sweat it out. Carl Hubbell easily beat the Bucs in a single game 8-1. Philadelphia and New York ended the season tied for second place. The fourth place St. Louis Cardinals swept two from Boston to move to within two games of first. The NY Yankees waltzed to the title, whipping the valiant Chicago White Sox by 5 games. Chicago almost caught the Yankees in the last two weeks, when the Bombers slumped badly. But Manager Casey Stengel righted the ship and won going away. Still it was a fine season for the Pale Hose. YANKS COP AMERICAN LEAGUE TITLE BY 5 GAMES PIRATES CAPTURE NATIONAL LEAGUE CROWN ON LAST DAY OF THE SEASON The AL crowned it first ever champions...the New York Yankees. Manager Casey Stengel's crew will now get ready to tangle with the National League winner, Danny Murtaugh's Pittsburgh Pirates. The best-of-seven World Series opens in New York at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. The Yanks will host the first two games with games 3,4, and 5 (if necessary) at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Games 6 and 7, if needed, will return to Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers are favored to take the World Series title because of their home run prowess...they topped the AAA in homers with 142 this season. Pittsburgh hit only 55, the worst in the AAA. But the Pirates have something going for them as they outdid the New York Giants, who hit 140 home runs to lead the National League. However, the Pirates took 13 of the 22 encounters between the two clubs this season. |

ALLTIME ALLSTAR ASSOCIATION
In game one it will be Deacon Phillippe (16-9 2.82) hurling for the Pirates against Lefty Gomez (16-8 2.76) for the Yanks. Manager Casey Stengel of NY will send all lefthanders against Pittsburgh. Whitey Ford (14-10 3.44) will go in game two, opposed by Sam Leever (15-11 2.97). Game three pitchers will be Ron Guidry (18-7 3.52) for the Bronx Bombers and Ray Kremer (10-10 3.38) for Manager Danny Murtaugh's Buccos. It will the longball power of New York against the punch-and-judy hitting Pirates. The Yanks bombed 142 homers this season to lead the Alltime Allstar Association, while batting .255 as a team. Pittsburgh only hit 55 home runs, the worst in both leagues. The Pirates led the National League with a .267 BA. LF Babe Ruth hammered 35 out of the park to lead the AAA. 2B Joe Gordon slammed 22, 1B Lou Gehrig and CF Joe DiMaggio each ripped 19 roundtrippers. New York had 3 players with more than 100 rbis: Gehrig topped both leagues with 115, followed by Gordon's 103 and Ruth's 102. In contrast, RF Roberto Clemente only slapped 10 and IF/OF Honus Wagner 9 to pace the Pirates. 3B Pie Traynor led all AAA hitters with a lofty .352 mark. The New Yorkers has three .300 hitters: Gehrig at .317, RF Earl Combs .311 and Ruth .306. Pittsburgh's top rbi guys were SS Arky Vaughan with 86, Clemente 82, Wagner 81 and Traynor 76. Wagner hit .292, Paul Waner .291, Vaughan .284 and C Jason Kendall .281. Oddsmakers give the edge to the Yankees because of their great hitting. I also give the edge to the Yankees. I don't think Pittsburgh has a chance.

1901 AAA WORLD SERIES - GAME ONE Wednesday, September 10, 1901 17-INNING MASTERPIECE AT YANKEE STADIUM TO OPEN WORLD SERIES BRONX BOMBERS TAKE FIRST GAME It was a magnificent game between two superb ballclubs. Both of them truly deserved to win, but alas, only one could. Here is how the opening game of the AAA's first World Series played out. Pittsburgh's Deacon Phillippe and NY's Lefty Gomez matched goose eggs until the sixth inning. Both had only allowed 3 hits. In the top half of the inning Honus Wagner singled with two outs, stole second and then scored the first run of the game on Arky Vaughan's single. Rube Foster came on for Gomez in the seventh. In the eighth the Pirates struck again. Phillippe singled and moved to third on Pie Traynor's base hit, then came around to score on Paul Waner's single. That made it 2-0 in favor of Pittsburgh. Mariano Rivera relieved Foster and got out of the inning with no more damage. Waite Hoyt came on to pitch for the Yanks in the top of the ninth and promptly yielded a massive 440-foot homer to Ralph Kiner, making it 3-0. But like second string NY catcher Yogi Berra said in the dugout to start the last of the ninth: "It ain't over...till it's over". How prophetic young Yogi was. Joe DiMaggio singled with one out. Then the AAA home run leader, Babe Ruth, blasted one high into the rightfield stands to make it 3-2. With two outs Joe Gordon miraculousy slams another one into the stands to tie the game at 3-3. The two teams then battled scoreless until the last of the seventeenth. Leon Day came on to pitch for the Pirates. Lou Gehrig slammed a double to the rightfield wall to start the inning. Joe Gordon tried twice to bunt him over to third, but failed. Then he grounded out to second and moved Gehrig over. With Bill Dickey at bat, catcher Jason Kendall couldn't handle one of Day's low-breaking curveballs and it got away from him, allowing Gehrig to easily score the game-winning one. Gehrig and Ruth led the Yanks with 3 hits in 7 at bats each, while Arky Vaughan had 3 for 6 for the Pirates. Phillippe was outstanding, going 11 innings, giving up 9 hits with 6 K's and no walks. Gomez stoodout, too, hurling six innings with only 3 hits and one run allowed. Relievers did their job, too. Waite Hoyt of the Yanks went 5 innings and stopped the Bucs on 2 hits and one run. Rivera, Gossage and Pennock held Pittsburgh scoreless in fine relief stints. Roy Face with 3 runless frames and Babe Adams with two did the job for the Pirates. PITTBURGH - 000 001 011 000 000 00 - 3 11 0 (17 innings) NEW YORK --000 000 003 000 000 01-- 4 14 0 WP: Pennock (1-0 0.00) LP: Day (0-1 27.03) PIT: Phillippe (SP) Face (12th) Adams (15th) Day (17th) NYY: Gomez (SP) Foster (7th) Rivera (8th) Hoyt (9th) Gossage (14th) Pennock (16th) HR: PIT - Kiner (1) NYY - B. Ruth (1) Gordon (1) In game two it will be righthander Sam Leever (15-11 2.97) on the hill for the Pirates and lefty Whitey Ford (14-10 3.44) for the New Yorkers. Check League Reports here: http://aaa.allsimbaseball.com/ Last edited by Eugene Church; 02-20-2006 at 03:09 PM. |

Thanks for your very nice comments. This was really an exciting game. I am still skyhigh just thinking about it. Hollywood couldn't have scripted it better. I love Babe and Lou, but still feel sorry for Murtaugh, Phillippe, Honus and the Pirates. I guess I love them all. (I used to watch Danny Murtaugh manage the New Orleans Pelicans in the Southern Association in the 50's...saw a lot of good games at old Pelican Stadium on Carrollton Avenue and Tulane Avenue) Last edited by Eugene Church; 02-20-2006 at 03:10 PM. |

ALLTIME ALLSTAR ASSOCIATION
1901 AAA WORLD SERIES - GAME TWO Thursday, September 11, 1901 PIRATES' LEEVER AND FACE TEAM UP TO DEADLOCK SERIES AT 1-1 It was a windy, cool, cloudy and dismal afternoon at Yankee Stadium for the hometown fans and their beloved Yankees. Pittsburgh held the NY big guns in check to win 5-2 and evened the World Series at one game apiece in the best-of-nine series. New York starter Whitey Ford had an off day and was not effective. He was tagged for four runs in the fourth. A free pass to Arky Vaughan (.556) and a single by Ralph Kiner (.400) put runners on first and second. Jason Kendall (.200), yesterday's goat, got a reprieve today and drove in the first run of the game with a single to score Vaughan. Bill Mazeroski (.273) then ripped a 2-run single to make it 3-0 with both Kiner and Kendall crossing the plate. Leever (.333) hit a single to right to score Maz from second. Pittsburgh was now up 4-0. The Yanks retaliated with a run in the sixth. Base hits by Babe Ruth (.364), Flash Gordon (.300) and Bill Dickey (.222) made it 4-1. The Pirates increased it 5-1 in the top of the seventh against Rube Foster. Pie Traynor (.250) started the inning off with a twobagger, move to third on Paul Waner's (.182) sacrifice bunt and scored on Honus Wagner (.100) deep fly to center. In the top of the eighth, due to Leever's lack of control, the New York had a golden opportunity to get back in the game. Lou Gehrig (.364) singled to lead off, Gordon walked, Dickey fanned, Jeter walked and Nettles whiffed for out number two. Pinchhitter Bernie Williams then got the third free pass of the inning to force in a run. That made it 5-2. Manager Danny Murtaugh went to the bullpen for his favorite fireman, Roy Face, who got Earl Combs (.182) to pop out to shallow center to end the inning. In the ninth Face walked Gehrig with two outs and then retired Joe Gordon on a grounder to end the game and even the series. In game three Pittsburgh will go with righthander Ray Kremer (10-10 3.38) on the hill. Casey Stengel will go with his third straight southpaw, Ron Guidry (18-7 3.52). With the Yanks going with lefties, Murtaugh has gone with Ralph Kiner in left, Bill Mazeroski at second base and Honus Wagner at first. Late in the season he had been using lefthanded power-hitting Willie Stargell at first and versatile Wagner at second. Kiner and Lloyd Waner had platooned in left. So far the move has made Murtaugh look good. Mazeroski has delivered timely hits and has been superb at second. In the World Series opener the Buccos had 5 double plays. 1901 AAA WORLD SERIES - GAME THREE Friday, September 12, 1901 "WIZ" KREMER KAYOS MIGHTY YANKEES 7-2...PIRATES LEAD SERIES 2-1 Pittsburgh's Ray "Wiz" Kremer was rock solid in game three at Yankee Stadium. He effectively scattered 10 hits and went the distance in the 7-2 win over New York. The Pirates are now up 2 games-to-one in the best-of-nine Alltime Allstar Association World Series. Kremer fired 8 third strikes past the Bombers and walked nobody. In contrast, NY's Ron Guidry was all over the place with his control...or lack of control. He struck out 11 Pirates, but also issued 6 bases on balls. In all, he and reliever Herb Pennock walked 8. Honus Wagner (.267) topped the Bucs' hit brigade with 3 hits in 5 at bats. Paul Waner (.308) was 2-2 with 3 walks and 3 runs scored. Ralph Kiner (.357) slammed a 2-run homer. Joe DiMaggio (.313) was NY's best with 3-4. Game Recap: A walk to Paul Waner and a double by Honus Wagner sent the Bucs ahead in the first, 1-0...NY tied it in the bottom of the first frame on a leadoff double by Earl Combs and Joe DiMaggio's rbi single...in the fourth Ralph Kiner clouted a 2-run shot to put Pittsburgh in front to stay, 3-1...in the fifth the Pirates increased it to 4-1...a base on balls to Paul Waner, Wagner's single and Arky Vaughan's (.357) fielder's choice scored Waner from third...in the eighth 3 more walks, 2 with the bases loaded, an error and 2 hits chased in 3 more to make it 7-1...the Yanks scored in the ninth on singles by Bill Dickey (.231), pinchhitter Yogi Berra (.333) and Earl Combs (.250). FINAL SCORE: PITTSBURGH 7 NEW YORK 2 (Pirates lead Series 2-1) PIT - 100 210 030 - 7 8 1 NYY- 100 000 001 - 2 10 1 WP: Ray Kremer LP: Ron Guidry The teams will be off on Saturday. It is a travel day as the Series now switches to Forbes Field for Games 4, 5 and 6, and if necessary, 7. On Sunday first game starters will go at it again in Game 4. Both performed quite well in the Series opener, but neither figured in the decision. Gomez shined with a 16-and-8 with a 2.76 ERA in the regular season, while Phillippe sparkled with a 16-9 record and 2.82 ERA. ALLTIME ALLSTAR ASSOCIATION
Game Five is set for Monday, September 15 in the AAA World Series. The Pirates and Yankees have split the first four ballgames. Forbes Field is the site with the second game starters getting the nod again. The Bucs' Sam Leever bested NY's Whitey Ford 5-2 in that one. Leever was 15-11 with a fine 2.97 ERA during the regular season. Ford finished at 14-10 and 3.44. Casey Stengel says he thinks his lefties will still do the job. Red Rolfe will get the start at 3B for the Yankees. This was a troubled spot for New York the whole season. Tony Lazzeri, Graig Nettles, Tom Tresh and Rolfe all got shots at it, but no one could settle in and hold on to it. Casey pretty much platooned all of them. Danny Murtaugh will go with his righthanded lineup. He will continue to use Bill Mazeroski at second base with Honus Wagner playing first. Willie Stargell will sit on the bench. He has been at first during the last weeks of the season to give the Pirates a little longball power. Maz's defense has been outstanding in the series so far and he has contributed some timely hits, too. Last edited by Eugene Church; 02-14-2006 at 10:54 PM. |
