Special Draft Observations and Analyses

Today is a very special day in the Alltime Allstar Association. The league will hold a special draft for some very fine Negro and Japanese stars. Each club will have one pick. We have already seen in the AAA inaugural season that the Negro players can compete quite well with the white ballplayers. Now we'll get to find out just how good the Japanese player is.

The worst team in baseball, Cincinnati will have the honor of the first pick. Manager Sparky Anderson needs help just about everywhere, especially in the pitching department. Cannonball Dick Redding, John Donaldson and Masaichi Kaneda will be at the top of their list. The Reds could use help at shortstop and second baseman. But the allure of such a renowned slugger like Sadaharu Oh (1B) may be too much to pass up. They might take his hitting over the pitching.

The St. Louis Browns get the second pick. The AL cellar-dwellers need help in pitching, outfield, 2B, 3B and SS. Skipper Earl Weaver drastically need some power hitters. They finish near the bottom in HRs with only 76 for the year. Oh maybe at the top of their list with 3B Nakashima and SS Moore and Toyota not far behind.

The Washington Senators have the third selection. They had poor pitching and no longball hitters this past season. They hit only 59 fourbaggers, next-to-last in that category. Only team worse was the Pirates with a pathetic 55. Manager/Owner Clark Griffith could use help at 1B, C, and 3B. Oh and Nakashima would be good choices for them. C Katsuya Nomura would really fill a need at catcher. Not only is he a good power hitter, he is a fine defensive catcher, that can play 140 games a year. C Louis Santop and 3B Boogum Wilson would be good choices, too.

Up fourth in the draft are the Boston Braves. Hitting is their greatest need. They led the AAA with a sparkling 3.26 team ERA, but still Bobby Cox could use 3 more solid pitchers to really put the final touches on his already excellent staff. They were by far the worst hitting team in both leagues...only .231 on the year. They have good power, finishing in sixth with 120. The Braves need to have some baserunners on when they hit them. Centerfielders Cool Papa Bell and Isao Harimoto would fill the bill for them. Both are excellent leadoff hitters and fine outfielders, too. 3B Hiromitsu Ochiai could supply some good hitting and add some more power to the lineup.

The fifth pick position is held by the Cleveland Indians. Manager Steve O'Neill will be looking for pitching and hitting. 3B and SS really need some help offensively. Nakashima and Toyota or Dobie Moore would be good additions, but they might not be around when the Tribe makes their choice. It might be easier to get a pitcher first.

Number six in the Special Draft goes to the Chicago Cubs. Players that hit for average will be their first priority. Charlie Grimm's Bruins have good home run production, finishing third in the AAA with 137, but fell short in batting average. OF Bell, OF Harimoto, 3B Nakashima, 1B/3B Ochiai and OF Pete Hill would all be a plus for the Windy City bunch.

The Brooklyn Dodgers and Skipper Tommy Lasorda get the seventh spot in the draft. Pitching help would be good, as well as some players, who hit for average. The Bums need to boost up at 2B, SS, 3B and in the OF. SS Moore, SS Toyota, 3B Wilson and OF Willard Brown might still be available.

Manager Joe McCarthy's Boston Red Sox get the nod at number eight. C, 2B, 3B, OF and pitcher is where they hope to shore up. Outfielders Kazuhiro Yamauchi, Koji Yamamoto, Yutaka Fukumoto, Willard Brown and Alejandro Oms may still be around. They are the most likely choice for the Bosox. Catchers and third basemen will mostly be gone by this pick.

Selecting ninth will be Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics. The A's were just about the best club in the AL in the second half of the season. A few good pickups and better performance by some of their underachivers could put them right up there with the Yanks and the Chisox. A pitcher, catcher and second baseman would hit the spot. They may just have to pick a good ballplayer, since there are only 2 catchers in the draft and no second basemen. The A's will have to go to the minors for a second sacker.

Choosing tenth in the Special Draft will be the St. Louis Cardinals, who finished well in the second half of the NL season, ending up in fourth place and only 2 games out of first place. Pitching is at the top of Tony Larussa's list...mainly relief pitching. A good hitting shortstop would be a good pickup and maybe a power-hitting outfielder. Neither of which may be left on the board.

The eleventh pick belongs to the Philadelphia Phillies, who surprised everybody with their tremendous second place finish in the National League, falling short by only one scant game. Manager Danny Ozark will be in the market for 2 starting pitchers to go with Pete Alexander and Robin Roberts. They already have a good solid lineup of everyday players, whose only shortcoming is not hitting for high enough average as in the case of sluggers Dick Allen and Mike Schmidt. SS Larry Bowa and 2B Fresco Thompson excelled last year, but provided no power at those positions.

The strong New York Giants will have the twelfth choice. Manager John McGraw would like to nab a good starting pitcher and improve at shortstop, third base and get a good outfielder for insurance purpose. Outfielders Mays, MVP Bonds and Ott are the best trio in the AAA.

Detroit and Hughie Jennings will use the thirteenth pick to improve in the pitching department, catcher and infield. At this point in the draft teams will just be picking the best player available, rather than trying to fill a certain need.

Manager Al Lopez of the Chicago White Sox has indicated his ballclub will use the fourteen selection to build up his pitching rotation. He would like to add a good-hitting catcher, power at third base and pickup a solid leftfielder that can add some zest to his club's attack.

Power, power and more power is what Manager Danny Murtaugh and the Pittsburgh Pirates want to add to their fine club. They were absolutely last in the whole AAA with only 55 roundtrippers all year long. In the World Series they were outhomered 15 to 2, but almost toppled the champion New York Yankees. The fifteenth pick in the Special Draft will try to rectify this horrific difficiency. You can rest assured they will pick the best home run hitter available when their turn comes. The Bucs could improve at pitching, catcher, first base and in the outfield, too.

The Alltime Allstar Association's first titleist, the New York Yankees and Manager Casey Stengel, will use the sixteenth choice in the draft to improve their pitching. They are in need of some good backups in the infield and outfield, too.

TEAMS TAKE PITCHERS AS TOP 3 PICKS IN AAA SPECIAL DRAFT TODAY

The 3 bottom rung clubs went for pitching in the Alltime Allstar Association Special Draft of Negro and Japanese League players.

RHP Kazuhisa Inao was number one in the draft and selected by the Cincinnati Reds. Manager Sparky Anderson passed up on Japanese slugger Sadaharu Oh, who was the odds on favorite to go first in the draft.

Picking number two the St. Louis Browns decided to add to their mound corps with a fireballing lefthander, John Donaldson. Manager Earl Weaver was expected to go for the longball, but at the last minute decided on a pitcher.

The third pick went to Washington and Manager Clark Griffith chose Cannonball Dick Redding.

Fourth in the draft Cleveland and Manager Steve O'Neill took hard-hitting third baseman Boojum Wilson.

Speed merchant and power hitter Pete Hill was taken by the Manager Bobby Cox of the Boston Braves. They held the fifth selection.

The Cubs and Manager Charlie Grimm got their leadoff hitter, centerfielder and speed demon, Cool Papa Bell as the sixth pick.

Brooklyn and skipper Walt Alston filled one of their needs, a third baseman. Hiromitsu Ochiai was the seventh player selected. He also plays first base.

Joe McCarthy, manager of the Boston Red Sox claimed a fine catcher with power, Katsuya Nomura, as the eighth player chosen.

Power-hitting third sacker Shigeo Nagashima was taken ninth by the Philadelphia Athletics and Manager Connie Mack.

With the tenth choice the St. Louis Cardinals wanted a shortstop with some punch in his bat and got it in Dobie Moore. Manager Tony Larussa was overjoyed that he was still available.

The Phillies and Manager Danny Ozark in need of starting pitching nabbed control artist Jiro Noguchi. He was the eleventh player chosen and the fourth hurler.

Manager John McGraw of the Giants wanted to add some insurance in the outfield and got a high average hitter with some power in Chino Smith as pick number number twelve.

Detroit with the best hitting club in the AAA went to the mound for the thirteenth pick. A power pitcher Masaichi Kaneda was chosen by Manager Hughie Jennings.

Manager Al Lopez of the Chicago White was amazed no one has taken catcher Louis Santop in the early going. He was the chosen fourteenth in the Special Draft.

Pittsburgh and Manager Danny Murtaugh also couldn't believe their eyes when they saw that Sadaharu Oh, a great-fielding longball hitter, was still up on the board. They used pick number fifteen to select him. Many experts thought he would be the first or second pick in the draft.

And to finish off the Special Draft with the sixteenth and last selection of the day, the Alltime Allstar Association World Series champions named righthander Jose Mendes. Manager Casey Stengel was delighted to add him to his pitching rotation.

OPENING DAY JUST TWO DAYS AWAY IN THE AAA

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROSTER CHANGES FOR THE NEW SEASON, PART 1

Winter and the Hot Stove League has come and gone and Spring has sprung! The Boys of Summer are back!

The second season of the Alltime Allstar Association will begin with a full slate of games this Thursday.

The New York Yankees will try to make it two in a row, but will have some strong competition from the White Sox, Athletics and Tigers, who think they might be able to challenge the defending AL and World Series champions.

The NL crown bearer, the Pittsburgh Pirates, added a vital element in the recent Special Draft that may put them right up with the Yankees. They added a fine home run hitter in first baseman Sadaharu Oh. However, the Phillies, Giants and Cards will probably have a lot to say in the coming pennant race, as all of them have added new players to their rosters that will make them potent adversaries again for the Bucs.

BOSTON RED SOX - 5TH PLACE (78-76)

In the American League the Boston Red Sox, who finished in fifth place last year, 13 games behind New York, have added some awesome hitting with the likes of 1B David Ortiz, OF Ellis Burks and OF Fred Lynn. Non-producers Mo Vaughn, Jim Rice and Jackie Jensen are back in the minors. The Bosox may have really shored up the catching department with young Japanese star, Katsuya Nomura, a very strong and durable catcher that hits with power. He will replace Sammy White on the roster. Jason Varitek and Rick Ferrell will back him up. Pitching-wise Manager Joe McCarthy has chosen to go with the same staff as last year. It was good at times and McCarthy thinks the year's experience will do wonders for his young staff. His rotation includes Cy Young, Roger Clemens, Smoky Joe Wood, George Ruth and Pedro Martinez. With such returning offensive talent as Ted Williams, Oscar Charleston and Nomar Garciaparra, it looks like everything is coming up rosey for the Red Sox.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX - 2ND PLACE (86-68)

The Chicago White filled a sore spot in the lineup. They signed Negro star, catcher Louis Santop in the Special Draft. Not only does he hit with power, but for average as well. He will be a big plus in the middle of the lineup and joins Carlton Fisk and rookie Sherm Lollar in the catching department. OF Carlos Lee and 1B Paul Konerko will add some punch, too. Lee may get some playing time, but Konerko will have to play behind one of the top power hitters in the AAA, Frank Thomas. Manager Al Lopez says it is a nice problem to have. Lopez promoted lefthander Mark Buehrle to the parent club. Pitching was a strong point last year as the Chisox tied Cleveland for the lowest ERA with 3.38. Buehrle is expected to be a spot starter and setup man, splitting the starts with Ted Lyons. On paper the White Sox look vastly improved and it could be their year to cheer. Missing from this year's team is Ray Schalk, Nellie Fox, Robin Ventura and Bibb Falk. All were sent back to the bushes for more seasoning. Batting champ, Joe Jackson, Magglio Ordonez, Luke Appling and Eddie Collins are all back for another run at the Bronx Bombers. Ed Cicotte, Ed Walsh, Wilbur Wood and Joe Horlen will be the nucleus of the Lopez pitching corps.

CLEVELAND INDIANS - 6TH PLACE (69-85)

Skipper Steve O'Neill of the Cleveland Indians seems to have juiced up the offense and the defense to go along with the Tribe's fine pitching. Hardhitting catcher Victor Martinez will take over that position and immediately improve it offensively. Last year's holdovers Jim Hegan and John Romano handled the defense quite well, but hit only .200 between them. Same thing for third base, Negro star Boojum Wilson and newcomer, Ken Keltner and Willie Wells will get the call at third, replacing the departed Al Rosen. Rosen, Wells and 5 others played the spot last year. O'Neill intends to split starts equally between the three and see who can win the fulltime job. Shortstops Lou Boudreau and Joe Sewell did not make the cut this spring. Rookie Omar Vizquel will get a shot to replace them, backed up by Wells. Vizquel is a solid and surehanded performer, who handles the bat well, too. Skipper O'Neill still has a trio of stars in the lineup: Tris Speaker, Nap Lajoie and Earl Averill. And a solid pitching rotation: Bob Feller, Herb Score, Early Wynn, Addie Joss and Mel Harder. George Uhle is the only new man on the hill. He will work as a sometime starter and in long relief. Pitchers Ray Narleski and Stan Coveleskie were dropped from the roster, as well as UIFs Carlos Baerga and Julio Franco. The Indians will be improved, but may not be able to improve their sixth place finish in the American League. All of the clubs ahead of them made great strides in the offseason, too.

DETROIT TIGERS - 3RD PLACE (83-71)

Manager Hughie Jennings of the Detroit Tigers hopes to improve last season's third place finish. The Tigers fizzled in the second half of the season and ended up 8 games behind New York. Lack of home run power and questionable pitching were the Tigers' downfall. They have signed the outstanding Japanese pitcher, Masaichi Kaneda. He is a workhorse fireballer and is set to start off the season as a spot starter and late inning relief specialist. Joining him on the mound will be Tommy Bridges, Hal Newhouser, Frank Lary, Jim Bunning and Hilton Smith. Detroit led the AAA in team batting with a .279 average, but hit only 78 homers. They still are pretty much the same club in the starting lineup with stalwarts, Hank Greenberg, Ty Cobb, Harry Heilmann, Harvey Kuenn and Charlie Gehringer, but have seemingly improved in the depth department with catcher Lance Parrish, first baseman Rudy York, outfielder Vic Wertz and utility man, Dick McAuliffe. All of these will supply much needed longball power in backup roles and pinchhitting. Infielders Lou Whitaker and Pinky Higgins are no longer on the club and have been farmed out. Likewise pitchers Harry Coveleskie, Jack Morris, Denny McLain and Mickey Lolich. It doesn't look like Detroit has equalled the other contenders in quality additions. They just might drop to the second division. A fifth or sixth place finish could be in the cards for them.

OPENING DAY JUST TWO DAYS AWAY IN THE AAA

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROSTER CHANGES FOR THE NEW SEASON, PART 2

NEW YORK YANKEES - 1ST PLACE (91-63)

The World Champions, the New York Yankees, made only minor changes in their roster. Manager Casey Stengel is blessed with an abundance of talent. Several of the Yanks' second stringers could be starring on other teams. New to the club are 1B Don Mattingly, C Jorge Posada and pitcher Jose Mendes. Posada will have to battle Bill Dickey for playing time, while Mattingly, as good as his credentials are, will have a tough time moving Lou Gehrig off of first. Gehrig led the AAA with 115 RBIs last season. Mendes will be used in middle relief. Stengel signed a backup shortstop, Phil Rizzuto. He is a solid defensive performer and good back up for regular Derek Jeter. Demoted in spring training were 3B Graig Nettles, CF Bernie Williams and UIF/OF Tom Tresh. Back for another season are the team's heart and soul, HR champ Babe Ruth, Gehrig, CF Joe DiMaggio and 2B Joe Gordon. They led the AAA in home run production last year with 142. Lefty Gomez, Ron Guidry, Whitey Ford will top the starters with Mariano Rivera and Goose Gossage heading up the bullpen. New York is even better than last year with Mattingly, Posada and Rizzuto on the club. They are great insurance for Gehrig, Dickey and Jeter.

PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS - 4TH PLACE (81-73)

Manager Connie Mack pretty much kept a pat hand with only a few new additions to the ballclub, which finished very well in the second half of the season and wound up fourth, 10 games out of first place. In the Special Draft they picked up Shigeo Nagashima, a Gold Glove third baseman with some power and a possible .300 hitter. Mack tried seven players there last year. He intends to give the Japanese star a good chance to take the position, although he indicated Frank Baker and Miguel Tejada would given fair shots, too. Mack intends to platoon them in the early season and see who can take charge. Buddy Rosar, a fine defensive catcher, was signed as a third catcher. The only other acquisition was power pitcher Dave Stewart. The righthander will be the sixth man in the rotation and get some spot starts. Gone from last year's team are pitcher Chief Bender, 2B Max Bishop, 3B Eric Chavez, 3B Jimmie Dykes and 3B Carney Lansford. The rest of the club is set with SS John Henry Lloyd, 1B Jimmie Foxx and OF Al Simmons in the forefront. Mack expects big things from his club this season. Lloyd only the joined the team at midseason last year and delivered quite handsomely with a .331 BA, 11 HRs, 51 Runs, 43 RBIs and 19 SBs.

ST. LOUIS BROWNS - 8TH PLACE (62-92)

Manager Earl Weaver of the St. Louis Browns needs just about everything. Pitching and power are especially absent. They hit only 79 homers and had a skyhigh 4.02 ERA. Weaver has made wholesale changes on the cellar-dwelling ballclub. He shipped out pitchers Urban Shocker, Milt Pappas and Stu Miller and brought in portsider John Donaldson, a Negro star. Weaver hopes Donaldson can give him another starter to go with Mike Cuellar, Dennis Martinez, Hoyt Wilhelm and Mike Mussina. But the thing he is most happy with is OF Ken Singleton, 3B Doug DeCinces and 2B Davey Johnson, who can all hit the ball out of the park. Weaver will also have his fabulous catcher back, Josh Gibson, who ripped 12 homers and drove in 43 runs in only 43 games, before being injured. He is back and healthy and bad news for AL pitchers. George Sisler will again play LF. Weaver hopes 1B Eddie Murray will blossom into the player everyone thinks he is. He hit a disappointing .270 last year with only 3 home runs and 25 RBIs in 59 games. If not, Sisler goes back to first and LF will go to Singleton, Sam West or Baby Doll Jacobson. Ken Williams is a fixture in rightfield. Weaver is hoping for vast improvement from his shortstops, Vern Stephens and Cal Ripken, both had poor and unproductive seasons last year. But the Browns' farm system is bare. It looks like St. Louis is improved, but it might be hard to move up in the standings as the clubs ahead are also improved.

WASHINGTON SENATORS - 7TH PLACE (66-88)

The Washingon Senators were almost as bad as the Browns and finished next to last place in the AL standings. Manager Clark Griffith is in dire need of some longball help. Last year they hit only 59 home runs, only Pittsburgh hit fewer with a paltry 55. But he found no help in his farm system and went for pitching in the Special Draft. He chose Negro League strikeout artist, Cannonball Dick Redding. One fine newcomer is 1B Mickey Vernon, a potential .300 hitter and good RBI man with a good glove, too. Farmed out this spring were pitchers Jim Kaat, George Mogridge, Jim Perry and Frank Viola. Infielder Pete Runnels also failed to make the club this year. It looks like Washington will remain in the bottom of the American League again in the upcoming season. They could be headed for the cellar.

OPENING DAY JUST ONE DAY AWAY IN THE AAA

NATIONAL LEAGUE ROSTER CHANGES FOR THE NEW SEASON, PART 1

BOSTON BRAVES - 7TH PLACE (69-85)

Manager Bobby Cox and the Boston Braves went looking for hitters. He has a very fine pitching staff with the best ERA in the AAA. He also has the worst hitting ballclub in the AAA. A .231 team batting average won't cut it anywhere, even if your team ERA is an excellent 3.28. You can't win, if you can't score. First in the Special Draft, he took a topnotch hardhitting Negro League outfielder, Phil Hill. Then he went to his farm system and plucked a fine hitting catcher, Joe Torre and a good hitter for average, outfielder Tommy Holmes. Cox will immediately put Torre and Hill in the lineup and give some playing time to Holmes as well. Boston thinks that these newcomers will definitely add a boost to the team's batting average and run production. Skipper Cox also thinks his holdover players will rebound from bad years and his club will surprise a lot of people. He says a jump to the first division is not out of the question.

BROOKLYN DODGERS - 5TH PLACE (78-76)

Dodger Manager Tommy Lasorda seems to have only made a modest improvement to his ballclub. None of the new acqusitions have excited the fans. Mediocre pitchers Bob Welch and Burleigh Grimes have been replaced by southpaws Fernando Valuezuela and Preacher Roe. Second baseman Steve Sax and outfielder Babe Herman have been signed. Sax, a speedy, steady-handed infielder, that hits for a good average, but not much power. Herman is a hitting machine, but not much of an outfielder. Sax will get a fair try to take second base from Jackie Robinson, who had only a fair season. Herman will find it tough to replace outfielders Zach Wheat, Duke Snider and Cristobel Torriente. But he might sneak past Torriente, if he doesn't pick up his batting average. In the Special Draft Lasorda took Japanese third sacker, Hiromitsu Ochiai, an average fielder with good power. Others gone from last year are UIF Junior Gilliam, 3B Ron Cey, OF/1B Pedro Guerrero and OF/1B Sean Green. The Ebbets Field bunch still look like a second division team.

CHICAGO CUBS - 6TH PLACE (75-79)

The Chicubs' Manager Charlie Grimm says it wouldn't take much for his club to move up in the standings. A good third starter to go with his two aces, Mordecai Brown and Ferguson Jenkins...a good leadoff man...and moderate improvement at catcher, second and third. He is putting his hopes in lefty Jack Pfiester and righthander Claude Hendrix in the pitching department. Pfiester will be a spot starter and share starts with Hippo Vaughn. Hendrix will be use in long relief in the middle innings. Grimm used the sixth choice in the Special Draft for Negro speed merchant Cool Papa Bell, who may hit over .300 and steal a slew of bases for him. Bell will be given the centerfield position and leadoff position in the batting order. Pitchers demoted from last year were Pat Malone, Lee Smith and Charlie Root. Also farmed out to the minors were 3B Ron Santo and OF Sammy Sosa.

CINCINNATI REDS - 8TH PLACE (62-92)

It was a long and dismal year for Sparky Anderson and his Big Red Machine. Terrible pitching and a whole host of players, who did not live up to expectations, were the culprits. He is optimistic that his two new moundsmen will provide some improvement. He selected Japanese star righthander, Kazuhisa Inao, as the first pick in the draft. He has great stuff and great control and will split starts with another new signee, portsider Ken Raffensberger. Raffensberger has splendid control, too. Anderson also added a solid all around outfielder in Gus Bell and a respectable backup catcher, who can hit for average, Bubbles Hargrave. Cincinnati sent down pitchers Rob Dibble, Don Gullett, Bucky Walters and Paul Derringer. 1B Frank McCormick and SS Leo Cardenas failed to make the roster this year. Frank Robinson, Ed Roush, Vada Pinson and Pete Rose were the only dependable hitters last year. Cincy's pinching staff had a combined 4.18 ERA, by far the worst in both leagues. Anderson said it is going to be a slow building process to make the team a winner.

OPENING DAY JUST ONE DAY AWAY IN THE AAA

NATIONAL LEAGUE ROSTER CHANGES FOR THE NEW SEASON, PART 2

NEW YORK GIANTS - 2ND PLACE (TIE) (83-71)

The New York Giants are ready for the season to begin. Manager John McGraw's charges were a very balanced ballclub...second in the AAA with a 3.33 ERA...second in home run production with 140, only 2 behind the powerful Yankees...and in a second place tie with the Phillies in the National League race. Manager John McGraw was not happy with last year's finish. He says nothing less than World Series champions will make him happy. He has added 3 players that should make his bench much better than last year. McGraw chose outfielder Chino Smith in the Special Draft. Smith, reputed to be the best pure hitter in the Negro Leagues, will have to break into a solid group of outfielders. He is a line drive hitter with a little power. Smith will have to move out some slugging ourfielders to win a regular job. Barry Bonds, Willie Mays and Mel Ott all hit over 20 homers and each had nearly 100 RBIs. One thing Smith gives the Giants according McGraw is a fine lefthanded pinchhitter, something they were lacking last season. The NY skipper also picked up fine backups in OF-1B Orlando Cepeda and C Harry Danning. Pitching-wise he added Jeff Tesreau, who will be used in middle relief. The Giants shipped pitchers Gary Lavelle and Frank Linzy, C Wes Westrum, 3B Matt Williams and shortstops Rich Aurilia and Dick Bartell to the minors.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES - 2ND PLACE (TIE) (83-71)

No one in his right mind would have ever thought the Phils would challenge for the National League title, but they did, and almost won it, falling short by one measly game. In the Special Draft skipper Danny Ozark got him a starting pitcher in Japanese star righthander, Jiro Noguchi, who has good stuff and great control. He will initially split starts with Steve Carlton. RHP Erskine Mayer was also added to the roster in an attempt to get some pitching help for Pete Alexander and Robin Roberts, who carried the club last year. A good hitting outfielder Bobby Abreu made the club with a fine spring and he may share playing time with Del Ennis in leftfield. Juan Samuel, a second baseman with some pop in his bat and excellent speed may give last year's first stringer, dependable Fresco Thompson, a battle for that spot in the lineup. OF/1B Von Hayes will be a very good backup. Ozark is optimistic about the coming campaign, thinking he has a much improved club over last year. He will have returning stars Chuck Klein, Mike Schmidt and Dick Allen, all who hammered over 20 homers apiece. Ozark will also have catcher Biz Mackey for the whole season. He hit .337 in half a year last year. No longer with the parent club are pitchers Al Orth, Tug McGraw and Larry Christensen, infielders Pinky Whitney, Granny Hamner, Scott Rolen and outfielder Gavvy Cravath. Ozark said he really hated to send the talented Rolen and Cravath down, but he just ran out of roster slots.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES - 1ST PLACE (84-70)

Last year's National League champ and almost World Series champ, the Pittsburgh Pirates are back and raring to go. They led the NL in batting average by a wide margin with a .267 team average, but really struggled in the longball department. Roberto Clemente hit 10 to lead the club. All season long the Bucs hit only 55 home runs, worst in both leagues. In the World Series the Yankees outhit them 15-2 in homers. So it was Manager Danny Murtaugh's highest priority to find some help in the power area. He found it in Japanese star, Sadaharu Oh, who was expected to be the first selection in the Special Draft. Lo and behold he was still on the board when the Pirates picked him number 15. Murtaugh couldn't believe his good fortune. Murtaugh also went to his farm system for OF Dave Parker, who will add some smack to the arsenal. Parker will platoon in left with Ralph Kiner. C Manny Sanguillan, a free-swinging .300 hitter will get a shot a catcher. Pittsburgh's pilot didn't concentrate totally on hitting, he also added a fine southpaw, Lefty Leifield, and a good righthander, Howard Camnitz. Both are control pitchers with plenty of junk in their repertoire. Leifield with be a spot starter and Camnitz will be in the bullpen for middle relief. Cut this spring were pitchers Kent Tekulve, Wilbur Cooper, John Candelaria and Leon Day. Infielders Glenn Wright and Jay Bell also failed to make the team and were shipped down.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS - 4TH PLACE (82-72)

Manager Tony Larussa's Redbirds spent the first half of the season in the second division, but came on strong at the end and fell only 2 games short of taking the NL pennant. They finished a solid fourth. Larussa tried to address the club's biggest needs: more home run power, better-hitting shortstop and more consistent starting pitching. In the Special Draft he got a power-hitting shortstop and a superb fielder in Dobie Moore, a Negro League standout. Last season "good field-no hit" Ozzie Smith and good hitter, Edgar Renteria split time at the position. He added some home run power in the outfield with Jim Edmonds and good backups with utility infielder Charlie Gelbert and defensive catcher Mike Matheny. Larussa promoted reliever Jason Isringhausen to help ace fireman, Todd Worrell. Isringhausen will be the setup guy. The Cardinal pilot decided to stay with last year's starters and hopes the year of experience will give them more consistency. Bob Gibson and John Tudor are the mainstays of the mound staff. Larussa is looking for marked improvement from Satchel Paige and Dizzy Dean, two fireballers with much potential. Stan Musial, Rogers Hornsby, Chick Hafey and Frankie Frisch had fine seasons and will be back again to lead St. Louis. Missing from this year's roster are pitchers Joe Hoerner, Al Hrabosky, Harry Brecheen and Max Lanier, as well as infielders Red Schoendienst, Edgar Renteria, Marty Marion and Ken Boyer. Larussa thinks the Cardinals can win it this year.

SCRIBES SAY YANKS WILL WIN AL TITLE AND GIANTS THE NL FLAG

GIANTS TO TAKE THE WORLD SERIES IN 1902

The Baseball Writers of America have announced their preseason picks for the 1902 Alltime Allstar Association:

American League

1. New York Yankees
2. Chicago White Sox
3. Philadelphia Athletics
4. Boston Red Sox
5. Detroit Tigers
6. Cleveland Indians
7. St. Louis Browns
8. Washington Senators

The Bronx Bombers are the favorites to take it again in the AL, although the White Sox could really push them this year. New York will pretty much be the same team as last year, but with much a much better bench. 1B Don Mattingly and C Jorge Posada could be regulars for a whole lot of teams, but have tough competition in Lou Gehrig and Bill Dickey, two All-star performers. The Yanks added infield depth with surehanded Phil Rizzuto at shortstop and Manager Casey Stengel's pitching could be a little better this season.

Chicago really went looking and came up with a bunch of new recruits. Manager Al Lopez needed power and he got it. OF Carlos Lee and C Louis Santop will put some pop in the lineup, enough to severely challenge New York. Lopez can call on another powerhitter, 1B Paul Konerko, for pinchhitting. It is unlikely he will replace slugger Frank Thomas, who hammered in 33 homers and 112 RBIs last year. Lefty Mark Buehrle is a welcome addition to the Chisox's already potent staff.

The best team in the second half of the season last year was the Philadephia A's. If they continue to play that way in 1902, the Athletics will be contending for the title, too. Manager Connie Mack's roster moves have added strength at third base with Japanese import, Shigeo Nagashima. He hits for average and the longball and is a fine fielder. Mack really likes his pitchers and made them a little better with righthander Dave Stewart. Philadelphia's outstanding Negro shortstop, John Henry Lloyd, will also be around for the whole season. He only played 79 games last year with a .331 BA, 11 HRs, 51 Runs, 43 RBIs and 19 SBs.

Only a few games will separate the AL's top 3 clubs.

The Boston Red Sox will move up from sixth to fourth this year. They were terrible in the first half of the season and hit only .230 as a team. They won't do that again this year. Oscar Charleston, Ted Williams and Nomar Garciaparra will see to that. They will get some help in that department from rookie David Ortiz, a slugging first baseman, and a fine defensive catcher with power, Japanese import, Katsuya Nomura. Both will be starters. Ellis Burks and Fred Lynn will add hitting and depth to the outfield corps. The mound staff should be better. Manager Joe McCarthy looks for much improvement and more consistency from the talented trio of George Ruth, Pedro Martinez and Smokey Joe Wood, all who were somewhat disappointing last year.

Skipper Hughie Jennings has the best hitting club in the AAA. The Detroit Tigers led all teams with a .279 average and outscored everybody, too. But they finished a distant third to the Yankees and White Sox because of faulty pitching, sixth in the AL. Top priority for Jennings was pitching. He picked up a fine Japanese righty, Masaichi Kaneda, in the Special Draft this season. 1B Rudy York, OF Vic Wertz and C Lance Parrish will give Jennings some good backup and fine pinchhitting with power, when he has to go to the bench. Lack of longball power is Detroit's biggest weakness. They hit only 79 homers last year.

Cleveland is much improved this campaign with fine rookie hitters like 3B Boogum Wilson and 3B Ken Keltner, who will platoon at that position. Victor Martinez will also add much better hitting at the catcher spot, too. Manager Steve O'Neill thinks new signee, SS Omar Vizquel, will be solid at bat and in the field. The Tribe's skipper thinks that his pitchers having a year under their belt will make his pitching better as well.

Earl Weaver, St. Louis Brown pilot, said there no doubt about it, his team is much improved this season. He doesn't expect to finish in the basement like last year. He is shooting for a first division finish. He thinks his pitchers will mature in their second season of play. But more importantly, added home run power will be the essential ingredient to his club's rise in the standings. 3B Doug DeCinces and 2B Davey Johnson are expected to hit 15-20 homers each for St. Louis. On the bench will be OF Ken Singleton, another potent hitter. In the Special Draft Negro League power pitcher, John Donaldson, was selection number two. Weaver thinks the strong portsider will blossom into a much needed starter for him. He is expecting a big season from 1B Eddie Murray, who did not play up to potential in 1901. The Browns' skipper thinks another huge plus is having powerful catcher Josh Gibson for the whole year. He hit .340 with 12 homers and 43 RBIs in just 43 games. Weaver predicts Gibson will lead both leagues in home runs and RBIs.

The hapless Washington Senators are picked to be at the bottom of the league again this season. Last year they finished seventh, but won't finish that high in 1902. New hurlers Cannonball Dick Redding from the Negro League and Brad Radke up from the farm system, will help a little. But what the Senators need even more is home run power. They finished dead last in the AL with 59 homers. And it won't be any better this year. Newcomer Mickey Vernon at first base is a fine hitter, but will not go long very often.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

MCGRAW'S NY GIANTS PICKED TO DETHRONE PITTSBURGH IN NL TITLE CHASE

The Baseball Writers of America have made the New York Giants their choice to win the National League championship.

1. New York Giants
2. St. Louis Cardinals
3. Pittsburgh Pirates
4. Philadelphia Phillies
5. Chicago Cubs
6. Brooklyn Dodgers
7. Boston Braves
8. Cincinnati Reds

Manager John McGraw agrees with the scribes and has gone on record that the New York Giants will win it all in 1902. His club finished a very strong second to the Pittsburgh Pirates, who came within an eyelash of beating the Bronx Bombers in the 1901 World Series. The writers and McGraw think the Giants have a better pitching staff than the Yankees and can match them homer for homer, something the Pirates could not do. McGraw's boys hammered 140 out of the park last year, second only to the Yanks' 142. Barry Bonds, Mel Ott, Willie Mays and Bill Terry totaled 95 home runs last year. Carl Hubbell, Christy Mathewson and Juan Marichal form a splendid nucleus for his mound corps, the envy of any team in baseball. Rob Nen is also a fine bullpen specialist, too. Negro outfield star, Chino Smith, adds the presence of an outstanding lefthander hitter to the roster. Some say he was the best pure hitter in the Negro Leagues. He will be used primarily as a pinchhitter and outfield relief for McGraw. But it may be hard to keep out of the lineup. Orlando Cepeda was another good pickup. He is a solid powerhitter and fine backup for Terry at first base. Harry Danning will improve the catching corps, which produced very little offensively last year. Danning can hit for average and will probably get first call at the start of the season. RHP Jeff Tesreau will be a newcomer on the Giants superb mound staff and will have to earn his spurs in the bullpen for awhile. In a showdown with the Yanks in the World Series the so-called and semi-experts of the Great American Pastime think the Giants will win the Subway Series. Better pitching gives them the edge.

Selected to finish in the runner-up spot in the NL are the St. Louis Cardinals, who played the best ball of any team in the second half of the 1901 season, but came up short by just 2 games in fourth place. Mediocre seasons from budding stars Satchel Paige and Dizzy Dean did the Redbirds in. Manager Tony Larussa thinks that will change this year. Both Paige and Dean has good springs and have earned their way back to his good graces. They both ended up in the bullpen last year. This year Larussa has them penciled in as spot starters. St. Louis got their wish in the Special Draft. They signed Dobie Moore, a fine hitter and splendid shortstop, a weakness last year. They got good fielding from Ozzie Smith, but no offense. Outfielder Jim Edmonds will provide needed longball offense and excellent defense. He will platoon in rightfield with Enos Slaugher and Ducky Medwick. The Cards have a new catcher, who can hit with power, Walker Cooper, pitcher Mort Cooper's brother. St. Louis hit only 90 home runs last year, but seem to have made some strides here if Moore, Edmonds and Cooper can produce. A sore point last year was middle relief. Jason Isringhausen is expected to fill the bill there and give Todd Worrell some needed help in the bullpen. Hornsby, Mize, Musial, Frisch and Hafey give Larussa the basis for a fine team, one that could be solid contender for the National League crown.

The Pittsburgh Pirates who were superb last year don't seem to have improved as much as the teams picked ahead of them. They did however rectify their main shortcoming...home run power. In the Special Draft they selected a great Japanese slugger, Sadaharu Oh, who will take over first base. Last year the Bucs hit only 55 homers, the worst in both leagues. It finally caught up with them in the World Series. The NY Yankees slammed 15 in the nine-game series, while Pittsburgh could counter with only 2. Fortunately hitting is a strong point with the Pirates, they led the NL with a .267 team batting average and lead the league in runs scored. Manager Danny Murtaugh thinks Oh, OF Dave Parker and C Manny Sanguillen might supple the key missing element this year. In the pitching corps Lefty Leifield and Howard Camnitz will try to bring improvement there. Last year this was a strong point for Murtaugh's crew. They had an overall 3.36 ERA, third in the NL and overall in the AAA. Last year the Pirates overachieved according to some scribes and almost beat a much more talented Yankee team. Pittsburgh did not choked in the World Series by losing after leading 4 games to 2, they just got beat by a superior ballclub. A critical hit in those last three NY victories could have changed the outcome very easily. Don't count them out just yet.

One of the great surprises of last season were the remarkable Philadelphia Phillies of Manager Danny Ozark, who took 2 pitchers, Pete Alexander and Robin Roberts, and teamed them with 4 home run hitters and came within an inch of winning the National League. Chuck Klein, Mike Schmidt, Dick Allen and Del Ennis slugged 98 between them, the best foursome in all of baseball, topping both the Yankees and Giants top power providers. Ozark has added a little more power on the bench with OF Bobby Abreu, OF/1B Von Hayes and 2B Juan Samuel. Abreau may move into a platoon situation with dependable Del Ennis, who really had a fine season last year. Abreu may just be too good to keep out of the lineup. The Phils hope the Special Draftee, Japanese pitching star, Jiro Noguchi, will eventually move into the main starting rotation. Initially he will just be a spot starter and setup man in the bullpen. He has superb control and rarely walks anyone. It looks like Ozark's charges could surprise again and battle for the National League trophy. Finding another starting pitcher or two could make this possible.

Manager Charlie Grimm piloted the Chicago Cubs to a sixth place finish last season with power hitting and just average pitching. All total the Bruins hit 137 into the stands, third behind the Bronx Bombers and Giants. Ernie Banks, Turkey Stearnes and Hack Wilson all hit a bunch out of Wrigley Field. Stearnes hit .332 with 23 HRs in just a half season with 55 RBIs and 56 runs scored. Banks led the NL with 31 fourbaggers. On Cholly Jolly's wishlist this season was a high average leadoff hitter and better pitching. He got his first wish in the Special Draft: Cool Papa Bell, a Negro League speed merchant, who hits well and plays a great centerfield, too. Grimm promoted southpaw Jack Pfiester and righty Howard Camnitz in an effort to bolster his pitching corps. The only other addition to the club was catcher Jody Davis, who hit with some power, but is only adequate behind the plate. One of the Chicubs' strengths is starters Mordecai Brown, the only 20-game winner in the Alltime Allstar Association, Fergie Jenkins, a 15-game winner, Larry French, a 2.93 ERA and Ed Ruelbach. Sometimes starter Lon Warneke and bullpen ace, Bruce Sutter, also put up good numbers.

Last year the Brooklyn Dodgers under Manager Tommy Lasorda ended up fifth in the standings and it looks like that is about the best they can hope for. Solid pitching from Dazzy Vance, Sandy Koufax and Don Sutton in the starting rotation kept the Bums in the bottom of the first division for the first half of the season. Star reliever Ron Perranoski had an outstanding year and won 13 games and had 6 saves. The Dodgers were adept at hitting homers, too. But in the second half of the season Duke Snider and Gil Hodges dropped in production and they were critical to the team's early season success. Late in the season the club swooned and finished up in the second division. The Dodger farm system provided 4 rookies: OF Babe Herman, an outstanding hitter with some power, but a little less than adequate in the field, 2B Steve Sax, good hitter and good fielder and pitchers Fernando Valenzuela and Preacher Roe. In the Special Draft Lasorda may have found a solution to his third base problem in Japanese recruit, Hiromitsu Ochiai. He has a reputation for for good home run power. If Valenzuela or Roe steps it up and becomes a starter, then Brooklyn might slip in the first division. They also need good years from SS Pee Wee Reese and 2B Jackie Robinson, who were a little subpar last season. Hodges and Snider need to step it up, too.

Last year the only thing the Boston Braves had going for them was outstanding pitching, which got absolutely no run support. As a team the Braves hit a pathetic .231, some 23 points below the next worst club, the Chicago Cubs. However their 3.28 Team ERA was the best in both leagues. A fine foursome of Greg Maddux (17-8 2.61), Warren Spahn (8-11 2.58), Phil Niekro (11-9 2.84) and Lew Burdette (10-12 3.02) kept them in just about every game, but could not overcome the poor hitting. Manager Bobby Cox went scouring the minors and found some gems in catcher Joe Torre, outfielder Tommy Holmes and Negro star outfielder, Phil Hill. Torre and Hill will move into the starting lineup right away and will add possible .300 hitters with moderate home run ability. Cox stayed pat with his pitching corps and expects it to get better. He doesn't think John Smoltz will have two poor years in a row. The Boston skipper thinks he will get improved performance from Johnny Sain, Don McMahon and Steve Bedrosian, too. If the holdovers from last year's club hit up to their potential, expect the Boston Braves to really blossom in the National League. That is a big "if", though. Otherwise, it looks like another seventh place finish.

And pulling up the rear just like they did in 1901, the Cincinnati Reds. Woeful pitching was Manager Sparky Anderson's main pitfall. The Reds were deadlast in all of baseball with a 4.18 ERA. To alleviate this problem somewhat, Anderson used the first pick in the Special Draft to select one of Japan's best hurlers, Kazuhisa Inao, a power pitcher with flawless control. From the Cincinnati farmhands he moved up a crafty lefthander, Ken Raffensberger, who also has great control. They will be used as spot starters and also as the club's late inning specialists. Anderson has faith that last season most of his players suffered an off year all at the same time. He has fine talent, but last year they flopped and wallowed in last place the whole season. He added OF Gus Bell and catcher Bubbles Hargrave to the roster. Both should get decent shots at some playing time, especially if the team flounders like 1901. The scribes' outlook is bleak for the Reds. They may still be the worst team in the AAA.

I will begin a new format to the Alltime Allstar Association dynasty report. I will no longer give write up summaries of each day's games. I have found that it just takes to long to do that. It took me over a year to finish the first season. While I did greatly enjoy the league, writing in such details required a lot of time and took away from my pleasure.

This season I will give reports every 30 days and summarize league happenings. My website will have boxscores to cover each 10-day period. It will be up to you to go to the website for league reports and standings.

PLEASE Let me know, if you have any trouble navigating the site.

I will also revise my game play method. In the first year I simmed the first 6 innings and then played out the rest of the game. This meant I got to make 95% of the pitching changes and player substitutions. It worked well, but is time consuming.

This season I will sim more in each game, including late innings. I will watch for possible pitching changes and make them before the AI can do it. This will mean simming by the half inning mode. So far, I have played the first 5 games and it has worked well.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

AL TOPSY-TURVY...INDIANS AND A'S ON TOP...YANKS AND TIGERS AT THE BOTTOM

It has been a bewildering first two weeks of the season in the American League. The defending World Series champions, the New York Yankees, are languishing in 6th place, already 3.5 games out of first. Cleveland and Philadelphia have jumped off to good starts with 7 and 3 records, tied for the top spot. Chicago is 7 and 4 in third, followed by St. Louis at 6 and 4. The Washington Senators are fifth with a 4-6 mark, Yankees 4-7, Detroit and Boston are last at 3-7.

The Athletics are no surprise, since they had the best overall record in the second half of the season last year. But last year's also-rans Cleveland and St. Louis are certainly creating a little noise in the early going.

Philadelphia has combined decent pitching by starters Lefty Grove (2-0), Rube Waddell (2-0) and Ed Plank (1-0) and fine hitting by Jimmie Foxx (.400/1/7), newcomer Shigeo Nagashima (.366/1/9), Mickey Cochrane (.303/2/12) and John Henry Lloyd (.300/1/5). As a team the A's are hitting .280 so far.

The Indians lead the AL in batting with a .289 average and 13 home runs (tied with the Cubs for the AAA lead), paced by Larry Doby (.469/3/10), rookie Omar Vizquel (.355/0/2), Nap Lajoie (.310/1/3), Earl Averill (.308/2/4) and Luke Easter (.273/3/9). Addie Joss (2-0) and Herb Score (2-0) are the top starters.

The Chicago White took 5 of 8 against the Yankees and are in third place. They have done it with timely hitting and haven't really hit or pitched well. But Manager Al Lopez doesn't care. Winning games is the important thing. Only Ed Walsh (1-0) and Ed Cicotte (2-1) have stood out on the mound thus far. Shoeless Joe Jackson (.350/1/9), Magglio Ordonez (.304/1/5) and Luis Aparicio (.282/0/7) have been the main hitters.

The Browns' pitching has been brilliant. They lead both leagues with a 2.60 team ERA. Hoyt Wilhelm (2-0), Mike Mussina (1-1), Dennis Martinez (1-1) and Jim Palmer (0-0) have been great in the early going. Manager Earl Weaver is really happy with his club's longball output. They have hit 9 to rank second in the AL and third in both leagues. Vern Stephens (.351/2/7), rookie Doug DeCinces (.365/2/6), George Sisler (.304/0/6) and Eddie Murray (.263/3/11) have all swung potent bats this year.

Connie Mack's Senators have been dismal this year in both hitting and pitching, down at the bottom with a .248 team BA and skyhigh 4.53 ERA. Only Camilo Pascual (1-1) and Dutch Leonard (1-1) have been effective on the hill. Old standbys, Goose Goslin (.378/1/5) and Cecil Travis (.342/0/7) again are the team's offensive sparkplugs. As a team they have hit only 4 homers, last in the AAA.

Casey Stengel's Bronx Bombers have been bleak so far, hitting a pathetic .226 with a mediocre 4.20 ERA. Whitey Ford (1-0) is the only solid starting pitcher up to now. Lou Gehrig (.350/4/12) is picking up where he left off last season, while Babe Ruth (.231/2/8) hasn't hit for average, but is driving in runs.

Cellar-dwellers Boston and Detroit both are off to a slow start. Neither club is hitting well or pitching well. The Red Sox's batting average is .255 with a 4.55 ERA, while the Tigers are at .254 and 4.33 on the ERA.

Boston's Smokey Joe Wood (1-0), George Ruth (1-1) and Pedro Martinez (0-2) have done well in the pitching department and Ted Williams (.308/3/9), Oscar Charleston (.250/3/6) and Dom DiMaggio (.333/1/2) have been the only hitters of note.

Only Hal Newhouser (1-0), rookie Masaichi Kaneda (0-0) and Tommy Bridges (0-0) have held the opposition in check for the Detroit pitching corps. The Tigers are hitting 40 points below their last season batting average. Only Ty Cobb (.450/2/7), Hank Greenberg (.216/3/10) and Charlie Gehringer (.324/1/5) have been any kind of offensive threat.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CONTENDERS FLOP IN FIRST WEEKS...REDS AND CUBS SURGE

Sparky Anderson's Cincinnati Reds are playing like they were supposed to last year and are co-leaders with the Chicago Cubs in the National League after the first 10 days of play. Both clubs were in the second division last season with the Reds mired in last place and one of the worst teams in the Alltime Allstar Association. Both teams are 7-3 and a game and a half up on third place Brooklyn. Last year's NL champs Pittsburgh is 5-6 and tied for fourth with the Phillies. Pulling up the rear at 4-6 are the New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Braves.

Cincinnati is doing everything right. Hitting an outrageous .323 as a team and sporting a splendid 2.83 ERA. The Cubbies are doing it with power with 13 homers, tops in the AAA and tied with Cleveland. Chicago pitching has not been as successful with an inflated 4.55 ERA.

Manager Anderson has six .300 hitters: Ted Kluszewski (.359/3/7), Tony Perez (.368/0/10), Ed Roush (.375/0/7), Vada Pinson (.366/1/5), Dave Conception (.382/0/3) and Pete Rose (.317/0/4). On the pitching side of the ledger, he has gotten super starts from Gary Nolan (2-0), Japanese rookie import, Kazuhisa Inao (2-0) and Jim Maloney (1-1).

Cholly Jolly Charlie Grimm is overjoyed at the Bruins fine start with some outstanding power hitting and run production from Turkey Stearnes (.474/4/12), Hack Wilson (.235/2/7) and Ernie Banks (.324/1/8). Mark Grace has chipped in with a .378 average, 3 RBIs and scored 10 times. Ed Reulbach (2-0) and Larry French (2-0) heads his mound staff.

The third place Dodgers' pitching has been woeful with an astronomical 5.82 ERA. How they have managed to stay at the .500 mark is mystifying. Good power and clutch hitting has saved them. Duke Snider (.297/2/9), Jackie Robinson (.366/2/6), Pee Wee Reese (.341/1/4), Cristobel Torriente (.364/1/4) and Zach Wheat (.276/0/6) have come through in the clutch. Only Don Sutton (1-1) on the pitching staff has had any success this season.

Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are both 5-6 and in a tie for fourth place, but is is bewildering how the Phillies and the Pirates have the same records, when you look at their stats. The Bucs are hitting a lofty .297 to the Phils lowly .231 and its pitching staff has compiled a fine 2.74 ERA to Philadelphia's out-of-sight 4.97 ERA.

Manager Danny Murtaugh of Pittsburgh has no less than seven .300 hitters in the lineup: Arky Vaughan (.381/0/3), Roberto Clemente (.343/0/6), Paul Waner (.333/0/4), Japanese newcomer, Sadaharu Oh (.326/4/12), Jason Kendall (.313/0/1), Pie Traynor (.306/1/3) and rookie Dave Parker (.292/1/5). On the hill he has a rock solid staff: Ray Kremer (.2-0), Deacon Phillippe (2-1), Vic Willis (1-1) and Sam Leever (0-1). With stats like that, you wonder how the Pirates lost a game, let alone six.

You really wonder how Philadelphia won 5 games, too. Only Dick Allen (.361/1/6) and Chuck Klein (.268/2/8) have any kind of respectable numbers in the batter's box. And only one pitcher, lefty Curt Simmons (1-1) has an ERA under 4.00.

Pulling up the rear and deadlocked in last place are three teams with lousy pitching up to now. The Giants' ERA is 4.25, the Braves 4.62 and the Cards with a 5.02 ERA.

John McGraw's New Yorkers are pounding the ball at a .296 clip, but it is not enough to overcome the bad relievers. Carl Hubbell (2-0), Christy Mathewsonn (1-0), Jim Perry (0-1) and Joe McGinnity (1-1) have done a decent job as starters. Giants batting stars thus far are: Roger Bresnahan (.387/1/7), Mel Ott (.333/1/6), Martin Dihigo (.313/2/6), Freddie Lindstrom (.310/1/5) and Bill Terry (.302/2/10). Barry Bonds (.162/2/3) and Willie Mays (.216/0/2) have yet to start hitting.

Bobby Cox of the Boston has gotten good starts from Greg Maddux (1-0), Lew Burdette (1-1) and Tom Glavine (0-1), but zilch from the bullpen. The Braves have improved over last year when they hit only .231. This year it is .251 with 11 homers, second in the NL and the AAA. Chipper Jones (.378/2/8), rookie Joe Torre (.306/1/4), Eddie Mathews (.257/3/6), Buck Leonard (.286/2/7) and Hank Aaron (.235/2/5) have kept them in the ballgame with their power.

The St. Louis Redbirds couldn't be any worse. Manager Tony Larussa has no hitting and no pitching. Only Dizzy Dean (1-1) and Mort Cooper (1-1) have been effective for him. Batting-wise only Frankie Frisch (.343/0/4), Roger Hornsby (.289/2/4) and rookie Jim Edmonds (.300/3/3) have done anything at all offensively.
