I was looking around at your website (which I had to go back a page or two to find the link to it), and I can't seem to be able to view the League Background. It gives me a " You are not authorized to view this resource. You need to login."
Also, I can't believe the Yanks are doing so poorly so far this season.

Yeah, the Yanks are not hitting...only .229, worst in both leagues...but they are 7 and 8 and had a 4-game win streak. |

Checked the site...it works fine for League Reports.
To be honest, I don't even know what should go in the "Background" section. I will check with the webdesigner and see what goes there. He set the basics up for the site...I am supposed to refine it and complete it. I really only use this site so you guys can get access to all of the League Reports. Please let me know if you cannot access the site or League Reports. |

Thursday, May 1, 1902 AMERICAN LEAGUE PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS MOVE INTO FIRST PLACE IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE See League Reports/Standings/Boxscores here: http://aaa.allsimbaseball.com/index....tpage&Itemid=1 Connie Mack's A's (13-7) continued to play well and have now moved into the AL top spot, 1 game ahead of the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games and have put up a high-scoring offense and solid pitching staff. The Athletics are hitting .265 as a team, tops in the AL. Mack's men have outscored everybody in the AAA, too. Newcomer Shigeo Nagashima (.394/2/12), Mickey Cochrane (.361/2/18), Jimmie Foxx (.342/4/15) and Al Simmons (.282/4/13) have been the offensive leaders. On the mound Philadelphia is second to the White Sox with a 3.38 ERA. Chicago leads the AL and the AAA with a brilliant 2.97 ERA. Eddie Plank has been superb with a 3-0 mark and minuscule 0.35 ERA. Other standouts have been Rube Waddell (3-1 1.64) and Lefty Grove (3-1 2.67). In the bullpen Bobby Shantz (1-1 3.18) and Dennis Eckersley (0-0 2.70) have been solid. It looks like the Athletics are picking up where they left off in the second half of last year, when they posted the best record. The White Sox (12-9) with an outstanding pitching corps continue to hang around near the top of the AL, going 6-5 in the last 10 days. Joe Horlen (3-0 2.32), Ed Walsh (2-1 2.20), Ed Cicotte (3-2 3.10) and Wilbur Wood (1-1 3.52) are a formidable foursome in the starting rotation. In the bullpen Bobby Thigpen (1-1 3.68), Gary Peters (0-0 0.00), Billy Pierce (1-0 2.08) and rookie Mark Buehrle (1-1 3.12) have been steady and reliable when called upon. Hitting-wise the Pale Hose are adequate with a .254 team batting average, led by Joe Jackson (.354/1/10), Harold Baines (.298/2/14) and the rightfield platoon tandem of Magglio Ordonez (.300/1/5) and Happy Felsch (.278/3/8). Last year's slugging first sacker, Frank Thomas (.198/2/7) has not shown up yet. Neither has highly-touted rookie catcher Louis Santop (.208/2/7). Manager Al Lopez has indicated first baseman Paul Konerko and backup catchers Carlton Fisk and Sherm Lollar might get their chance to pick up the slack. The Boston Red Sox (11-9) started off slowly this season, but have been the hottest team in the AL recently with an 8-2 record in the last 10 games. This moved them up into third place, only 2 games out of first. The Bosox pitching has really stepped up this season with Smokey Joe Wood (2-0 1.57), Pedro Martinez (2-2 2.10), George Ruth (2-2 2.60) and Roger Clemens (.2-1 3.57) getting off to good starts in the early going. Cy Young (1-3 7.11) has been disappointing thus far. As far as relievers, Dick Radatz (2-0 1.69) has been excellent with 2 saves in 7 appearances. Mel Parnell (0-0 1.13) had done very well, too, and might be slated for some starts in the near future. Ted Williams (.288/7/19), Oscar Charleston (.308/3/10) have carried the club so far. Rookie 1B David Ortiz (.188/3/10) has hit the longball, but nothing else. Nomar Garciaparra (.221/1/3) and new Japanese catcher Kotsuya Nomura (.209/2/7) have fizzled this year. Manager Joe McCarthy has Wade Boggs and Jason Varitek waiting in the wings. Manager Earl Weaver has been pleased with his St. Louis Browns (11-10) in the first month of the season. They are in fourth place, just 2.5 games behind the Athletics as they put up a 5-5 mark in the last 10 games. They are hitting with power and leading the American League with 23 home runs, a noticeable improvement over last year. Josh Gibson (.282/6/14), Eddie Murray (.277/5/17), Ken Williams (.308/4/12) and newcomer Doug DeCinces (.263/3/8) have revitalized the club's offensive firepower. Only George Sisler (.260/1/9) has faltered at bat so far. But Weaver said it is just a matter of time before he will turn it around and hit like the .337 hitter he was last season. On the mound only Hoyt Wilhelm (3-1 2.63), Mike Mussina (2-2 2.38) and Jim Palmer (1-0 1.96) have been effective for St. Louis. Weaver needs some help here, although the team ERA has improved over last year's dismal 4.02 mark. This year it stands at 3.54 in the first 21 games. Other than the 3 pitchers mentioned, no one else has been consistent. The Cleveland Indians (10-10) started off with a bang and even briefly occupied first place, but they have cooled off lately (3-7 in last 10 days) and fallen to the fifth spot in the standings and trail by 3 games. Starting pitching has been the mainstay of Steve O'Neill staff. Addie Joss (2-1 2.28), Early Wynn (2-1 2.78) and Herb Score (2-2 2.81) have really done the job, but the relief corps has been abyssmal. Only Don Mossi (1-0 3.86) has an ERA under 5.00 this season. The Tribe's only offensive sparkplugs have been Larry Doby (.362/3/12), Luke Easter (.271/5/18), Tris Speaker (.284/0/9), Earl Averill (.272/2/7) and rookie backstop Victor Martinez (.230/3/10). O'Neill really needs some help in the pitching and hitting departments to move up into the first division. Bob Feller (1-2 4.70) has been eratic on the hill and at the plate Nap Lajoie (.230/1/5) has been way below his batting standard. The defending World Series champs, the proud New York Yankees, are still languishing in the second division and have not been able to turn it around. The Bronx Bombers (10-12) are in sixth place and 4 games behind the leaders, putting up a 5-5 mark in the last 10 days. Manager Casey Stengel is bewildered by his ballclub's poor start. Everything has gone bad at the same time. They have been bad in both areas: batting and pitching. They have hit a puny .240, one of the worst averages in the AAA. Pitching-wise, just about as bad with a 3.94 Team ERA, next to last in the American League and one of the worst in the AAA. Rube Foster is (0-3 7.40), Ron Guidry (1-3 3.85) and ace reliever, Mariano Rivera (1-1 4.26) have not been effective. The only bright spots on the hill are Lefty Gomez (3-1 2.66) and Waite Hoyt (2-1 3.00) in the starting rotation and Goose Gossage (0-0 2.84) and Herb Pennock (2-1 2.45) in the bullpen. Top hitters have been Lou Gehrig (.268/5/18), Babe Ruth (.237/6/19) with a little help from Joe Gordon (.293/2/11) and Derek Jeter (.296/2/9)...and no help from anybody else. Catcher Bill Dickey (.175/2/8) and starting outfielders Joe DiMaggio (.217/1/10) and Earl Combs (.237/1/3) are in deep slumps. Stengel is ready to give rookie Jorge Posada, Mickey Mantle and Bob Meusel a shot at catcher and in the outfield. Seventh place Washington (9-12) is just a fair ballclub and is 4.5 games behind the AL leaders, compiling a 4-6 won-lost record recently. They can hit for average (.259), but with no power. They were next-to-last in home run production last season and last this year. Manager Clark Griffith's pitching staff is also near the bottom with a 3.90 ERA. Goose Goslin (.361/2/16), Heinie Manush (.289/1/13) and Cecil Travis (.308/0/9) are the top guns offensively. On the mound starters Walter Johnson (.3-1 4.14), Camilo Pascual (2-2 3.09), Dutch Leonard (1-1 1.09) and Firpo Marberry (1-1 3.00) are primary reason they have won a few games. They get very little help otherwise. High draftees Cannonball Dick Redding (2-2 6.65) and Brad Radke (0-2 5.40) have greatly disappointed this season. Harmon Killebrew (.061/0/0) has just about worn out his welcome and could be headed to the minors. Sam Rice (.200/0/3) looks like he is headed for the bench. Kirby Puckett (.364/0/1) is the most likely replacement for Rice. It looks like another long season for the Nationals. Last year's third place club, the Detroit Tigers (6-14), are floundering with a 3-7 record over the last 10 games and have fallen all the way down to the basement, 7 games in back of the Philadelphia Athletics. Nothing has gone right for Manager Hughie Jennings. His hitting has dropped from last year's .279 to a pathetic .246 and his pitching ERA has inflated from 3.79 to a whopping 4.97 this year. Ty Cobb (.382/3/15) has been sensational so far this season, but he is just about the only one. Hank Greenberg (.229/5/16) and Harvey Kuenn (.282/3/11) have done alright. Harry Heilmann (.274/0/7), Sam Crawford (.274/1/9) and Charlie Gehringer (.257/1/8) have only been fair to average this season. With the exception of Jim Bunning (2-2 2.06) and Tommy Bridges (0-2 2.06), all of the other staff members are over 5.00 in ERA. Jennings really needs for the batters to get revitalized and hit to their potential, but even then, the Tigers' mound woes will keep them in the second division. Sixth place may be the best Detroit can do with the talent they now have. Thursday, May 1, 1902 NATIONAL LEAGUE NY GIANTS WIN 9 IN A ROW...LEAP FROM LAST TO FIRST. See League Reports/Standings/Boxscores here: http://aaa.allsimbaseball.com/index....tpage&Itemid=1 In the last week and a half, John McGraw's Giants (13-7) really put it together with a 9-game winning streak. New York has literally hit their way to the top of the National League standings. With a team BA of .291 and 24 home runs this season, they are tied for the NL and AAA home run lead with the Dodgers and Braves. Carl Hubbell (4-0 2.14) and Joe McGinnity (3-1 2.03) have been magnificent thus far this season, backed up by some awesome hitting by Bill Terry (.287/3/17), Freddie Lindstrom (.313/4/13), Mel Ott (.316/4/11), Roger Bresnahan (.328/1/10) and Martin Dihigo (.308/4/10). They have a 1.5 game edge over the second place Boston Braves (12-9) and Chicago Cubs (12-9). Look out National League, if Christy Mathewson (2-0 5.46), Juan Marichal (2-1 4.80), Barry Bonds (.247/4/7) and Willie Mays (.288/1/7) and Company start producing like they did last year. McGraw has promised the Giant fans a World Series title this year. Right now he is making good on it. The Boston Braves (12-9) have won 7 of the last 10 to jump from eighth to second. Bobby Cox's bunch did it with powerball...they have slammed 24 homers this season, best in the AAA. Combined with fine starting pitching by Greg Maddux (3-0 2.66) and Phil Niekro (2-1 3.19) and good hitting by Buck Leonard (.315/5/19), Eddie Mathews (.260/6/14), Chipper Jones (.321/3/13), Hank Aaron (.294/5/9) and rookie catcher Joe Torre (.329/1/10), Boston has done well in the early season. If Warren Spahn (2-1 4.45) and Lew Burdette (1-3 3.69) play up to expectations, the Braves could be a valid contender in the race. Cox could use some bullpen development from Don McMahon (1-0 3.86), Steve Bedrosian (0-0 0.00 2 saves) and Gene Garber (0-3 4.77). John Smoltz (2-0 7.07) drastically needs to to improve, too. The Chicubs (12-9) have played .500 ball in the last 10 games and fell a spot to second place. They live and die by the longball, too, with some good solid pitching by Ed Reulbach (2-1 2.51), Fergie Jenkins (2-1 3.12) and Moe Brown (3-1 3.63). Larry French (2-2 4.65) and relief ace Bruce Sutter (2-2 6.23 2 saves) have faltered this season. Cholly Jolly Charlie Grimm is slowly breaking in rookie pitchers Joe Pfister (1-0 4.15) and Claude Hendrix (0-1 3.24). Star slugger Turkey Stearnes (.362/6/19) seems to be headed for another great season and is getting help from Ernie Banks (.308/2/14), Hack Wilson (.250/4/13), Mark Grace (.300/1/13) and rookie Cool Papa Bell (.305/2/10). Bell had done a fine job in the leadoff position with 16 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. Grimm is looking for more offense from Gabby Hartnett (.138/0/6) and Billy Herman (.254/0/9), who have both slumped in the early going. Tommy Lasorda's Brooklyn Dodgers (10-10) have run hot and cold in the first 3 weeks of the year, but have played well enough to be in fourth place, 3 games out. 5-5 in the last week and a half, the Dodgers depend on home runs to win. They are tied for the most in the AAA with 24. Duke Snider (.267/6/17), Zach Wheat (.341/3/11), Cristobel Torriente (.302/3/10), Gil Hodges (.234/4/10) and Jackie Robinson (.289/2/10) have supplied some potent production. On the mound only Don Sutton (3-0 2.90) has stood out. Dazzy Vance (1-0 2.00) has been on the DL since his opening day win. He should be back in a week or so. Sandy Koufax (1-3 4.60) has great potential, but so far has been very inconsistent. Rookie Fernando Valenzuela (1-2 6.28), expected to be a starter, has not delivered. Overall Lasorda's pitching is atrocious...a 4.69 ERA...one of the worst in the AAA. The Dodgers really need some vast improvement here. They are lucky to be fourth with pitching like that. How a club can hit .284, have a 3.01 ERA and just a so-so 10-10 record is a mystery to Pittsburgh's skipper, Danny Murtaugh. Currently resting in fifth place and trailing by 4 games, his mound corps has been awesome: starters Vic Willis (2-2 1.64), Deacon Phillippe (2-2 2.38), Ray Kremer (2-2 2.81) and relief specialist, Roy Face 9.1-0 0.73). They just don't get a hit at the right time. And they get lots of hits and even lots of home runs, something they lacked last year, from the fantastic Japanese rookie Sadaharu Oh (.337/7/21), Roberto Clemente (.313/1/17), Arky Vaughan (.370/1/8) and Paul Waner (.311/1/6). On the minus side Honus Wagner (.247/3/9) and starting pitcher Bob Veale (1-3 5.52) have struggled. Timely hits are all Murtaugh's team needs to move up in the standings. The Cincinnati Reds (9-11) were redhot in the opening two weeks of the new season, but have chilled off quite a bit. They have won only 2 of the last 10 and plunged from first to sixth, 4 games behind the NL leaders. As a team they are still hitting a lofty .283 with Ted Kluszewski (.293/4/12), Tony Perez (.338/1/18), Vada Pinson (.333/1/8), Ed Roush (.321/0/12), Pete Rose (.300/0/6) and Davy Conception (.322/0/6) all enjoying a good year. But they suffer from the same thing as the Pirates...they leave too many men on base. Frank Robinson (.231/2/8), their most valuable player last year, is still trying to regain his hitting form. Gary Nolan (3-0 1.32) and Jim Maloney (2-2 2.61) have starred this year, while last year's ace, Eppa Rixey (1-3 7.54), is having a very slow start like he did last year. Japanese rookie, Kazuhisa Inao (2-3 4.15) has had some good performances and looks like he was a good investment. He has been used both as a starter and a closer. Manager Danny Ozark of the Philadelphia Phillies (9-13) says he has only two problems: poor hitting and poor pitching. That's why the Phils have tumbled from a tremendous second place finish last year into seventh place this year, 5 games out. Absolutely no one on the team is hitting: Mike Schmidt (.198/5/10), Chuck Klein (.202/5/14), Biz Mackey (.267/1/5), Dick Allen (.274/1/6), Richie Ashburn (.230/0/9), Del Ennis (.250/1/8) and Larry Bowa (.254/0/6). And no one is pitching: Pete Alexander (3-2 5.20), Robin Roberts (1-3 5.79), Chris Short (0-3 4.71) and Curt Simmons (2-2 4.82). Only reliever Curt Schilling (1-1 2.31) has been effective. Japanese rookie import, Jiro Noguchi (1-1 6.10) has flopped up to now. None of the new position players have been given a chance yet, but Von Hayes, Bobby Abreu and Juan Samuel may be called on soon to try and turn things around. It looks like Schilling will be headed for the starting rotation as well. He did well last year in relief early in the season, but then failed as a starter and went back to the bullpen, where he did well again. It has not been a good season for last year's fourth place finishers, the St. Louis Cardinals (8-12). Picked to contend by most AAA scribes analysts, they have not produced to date. With a record of 4 and 6 over the last 10 games, Tony Larussa's Redbirds are still dead last, 5 games behind the NL-leading Giants. Ranked near the bottom in every category, BA (.236), ERA (3.99) and HRs (11), the only way is up for St. Louis. No one on the team is hitting .300. With no run support, Mort Cooper (1-3 2.18) had been outstanding on the hill, but has only one win to show for it. Last year's leading pitchers Bob Gibson (1-1 5.65) and John Tudor (2-2 4.68) are having trouble regaining last year's form. Gibson has been out with an injury for about 10 days and hopes to return to action soon. Larussa says as soon as the club begins to hit the way he knows they can, everything will be fine. He is not giving up on his club just yet. With outstanding talents like Stan Musial (.299/1/8), Rogers Hornsby(.260/2/9), Chick Hafey (.216/2/6) and Johnny Mize (.279/2/10) in the lineup, things could get much better very quickly. Sunday, May 11, 1902 AMERICAN LEAGUE AL BUNCHES UP WITH 5 TEAMS WITHIN 2 GAMES OF THE LEAD...WHITE SOX MOVE TO FIRST PLACE, RED SOX SECOND, ATHLETICS DIP TO THIRD, BROWNS ARE FOURTH AND CLEVELAND IS FIFTH. The steady Chicago White Sox (19-14) have squeezed into the top spot in the American League by a scant half game over the Boston Red Sox (17-13) and the Philadelphia Athletics (17-13). Al Lopez's Pale Hose are doing it with a splendid 2.93 ERA and good, solid .261 hitting. They have played .500 ball in the last ten games. Al Cicotte (4-2 2.70), Joe Horlen (4-1 3.46), Ed Walsh (3-2 1.89), Wilbur Wood (3-2 2.80) and newcomer to the starting rotation, Gary Peters (1-1 2.13) are the strong point of the team. Joe Jackson (.361/2/19), Eddie Collins (.309/0/11/), Harold Baines (.275/3/21), Happy Felsch (.277/4/9) are the regular leaders with Dick Lundy (.438/0/2) and Minnie Minoso (.345/0/3) picking up steam, since being given more playing time. Boston was really redhot until they dropped their last three games. For the last ten games they are 6-4. Roger Clemens (4-1 2.59), Pedro Martinez (3-2 2.20), Joe Wood (2-0 2.20), George Ruth (3-3 3.12) and reliever Dick Radatz (3-1 3.63) have starred on the hill, while a long list of hitters lead the way: Oscar Charleston (.311/3/14), Ted Williams (.257/9/27), rookie David Ortiz (.276/6/19), Johnny Pesky (.371/0/9) and Joe Cronin (.333/0/7). Recent additions to the lineup Ellis Burks (.455/1/2) and Fred Lynn (.367/1/2) have also led the charge. Connie Mack's Philadelphia A's went 4-6 over the last 10 games and slumped a bit to third place. Earlier in the season they were first. Lefty Eddie Plank (5-0 1.64) has been brilliant so far. Rube Waddell (3-3 3.06) and Lefty Grove (4-2 4.53) have chipped in some mound help, but overall this is the club's weakness (3.95 ERA). Hitting is what they do best: Al Simmons (.336/5/24), Shigeo Nagashima (.355/2/15), Mickey Cochrane (.333/4/22) and Jimmie Foxx (.290/6/20). The fourth place St. Louis Browns (17-14) have been the surprising team in the AL this season. They are 6-4 in the last ten contests and have won 4 in a row. They are leading the league in home runs with 35, second in the AAA, and have posted a .263 BA. Josh Gibson (.277/10/27) looks like a 50-homer a year man and has been helped out by Ken Williams (.301/5/15), Vern Stephens (.301/4/14) and rookie Doug DeCinces (.252/6/14). On the mound Jim Palmer's (3-0 2.25) switch to a starting role has paid off. Hoyt Wilhelm (4-2 3.07) and Mike Mussina (3-3 3.38) have been rock solid, too. The Cleveland Indians (16-15) are in fifth place and have won their last 4 games, going 6-4 in the last 10 games. They have a good blend of hitting (.263) and pitching (3.81 ERA) and pretty good home run power, too, hitting 27 thus far. Luke Easter (.286/6/23), Larry Doby (.344/7/18) and rookie catcher Victor Martinez (.293/3/20) have put up some good numbers. Pitching-wise Addie Joss (3-2 2.80), Early Wynn (3-2 2.96), Bob Feller (2-2 3.06) and Herb Score (3-3 3.60) form a fine nucleus for Manager Steve O'Neill. Manager Casey Stengel is still trying to right his floundering sixth place ballclub. New York (15-17) finished the last ten days at 5 and 5. He shook up the lineup, moving Derek Jeter (.256/2/15) to the leadoff spot and platooning Joe DiMaggio (.236/5/17) and Mickey Mantle (.237/1/4) in centerfield and Bob Meusel (.231/0/2) and Earl Combs (.281/1/6) in right. Only Combs is hitting well. Rookie catcher Jorge Posada (.229/1/3) has strugged at the starting position. Only Lou Gehrig (.306/8/25) and Joe Gordon (.322/3/18) have produced with any regularity. Unfortunately Gordon will be out for seven weeks with an injured knee. Minor leaguer Gil McDougald will be called up as a replacement. Only Lefty Gomez (4-2 2.61) and Herb Pennock (2-2 2.70) have been effective in the pitching department. Babe Ruth (.214/6/19/21) still has not gotten out of his season long slump. Washington (14-17) is all even at 5-5 for the last 10 games, in spite of losing the last three. Connie Mack has energized the offense a little bit with Kirby Puckett (.319/1/7) and Tony Oliva (.361/1/9) inserted in the regular lineup. Old reliable Goose Goslin (.325/2/20) is having another fine year. So is Heinie Manush (.315/1/14). The mainstays of the pitching corps are Walter Johnson (4-1 3.29), Camilo Pascual (2-2 3.56) and Dutch Leonard (2-2 3.09). The team with the worst record in both leagues continued its downward spiral with a 3-7 mark over the last ten days. Detroit (9-21) is next-to-last in the AAA in hitting with a .244 BA and a skyhigh 4.62 ERA. With numbers like that it is no wonder Manager Hughie Jennings is not getting a whole lot of rest at night. The only bright spots in his lineup are Ty Cobb (.330/3/18) with 15 stolen bases, Harry Heilmann (.325/3/11) and Hank Greenberg (.259/7/22). On the hill only Jim Bunning (.2-3 3.33) and Schoolboy Rowe (.1-1 3.27) have ERAs below 4.00. Sunday, May 11, 1902 NATIONAL LEAGUE GIANTS HANG ON TO FIRST PLACE, BRAVES MOVE INTO SECOND SPOT, PIRATES CHARGE INTO THIRD AND CUBS FALL TO FOURTH. The first place New York Giants (18-12) were all even in the past 10 games, winning five and losing five. The Polo Grounders are a very balanced ballclub with a 3.28 ERA and an explosive .287 BA. Carl Hubbell (6-0 1.74), Christy Mathewson (3-0 4.91) and Joe McGinnity (3-2 3.22) are a talented threesome and have carried the mainload so far this year. Martin Dihigo (.323/4/13), Bill Terry (.320/3/21), Freddie Lindstrom (.318/4/18), Mel Ott (.294/4/16), Alvin Dark (.281/1/15) and Barry Bonds (.270/6/14) lead the hit parade. Manager John McGraw got some bad news when leading hitter, Martin Dihigo, went down with a knee injury and will miss one to two weeks. But he has a good fill-in with Jeff Kent (.255/2/2). Rich Aurilia was called up for infield insurance. NY is doing quite well in the pitching department, even though Juan Marichal (3-2 3.83) has labored at times this season. Manager Bobby Cox of Boston (18-13) thinks he has a contender this year because of improved hitting to go with his already fine pitching staff. The Braves are in second place, just a half game out of first, winning six of the last ten games. Head-to-head Boston has taken four of six from New York this year. Buck Leonard (.321/9/25), rookie catcher Joe Torre (.311/3/14), Chipper Jones (.291/6/18), rookie CF Phil Hill (.248/4/9), Eddie Mathews (.248/6/14) and platoon outfielder Tommy Holmes (.311/0/8) top the hitters. The Braves lead the NL and the AAA with 36 roundtrippers so far this season. Couple that with some fine pitching from Greg Maddux (3-1 2.75), Tom Glavine (3-1 2.50), Warren Spahn (2-2 3.38) and reliever Steve Bedrosian (1-0 0.00) with 2 saves. Hank Aaron (.217/5/9) and Wally Burger (.151/1/1) continue to struggle at bat. Last year's NL champs, the Pittsburgh Pirates (18-13), have turned it on of late, taken seven of the last 10 games and moved up into third place, trailing the Giants by only one and a half games. The Bucs are hitting a solid .283 with 27 home runs. There has been a tremendous improvement in longball power. They only hit 55 home runs all last year. They are on pace to hit 135 homers this season, led by rookie 1B Sadaharu Oh (.318/9/32), Roberto Clemente (.299/2/29), Arky Vaughan (.333/2/16), Honus Wagner (.318/3/15) and Pie Traynor (.310/2/7). Danny Murtaugh's mound staff is headed by Deacon Phillippe (4-2 2.26), Vic Willis (4-2 2.65), Ray Kremer (2-2 2.81) and relievers Roy Face (1-0 0.55) and Lefty Leifield (1-0 1.59). Pittsburgh's ERA is 3.38, second in the NL to the Giants. The Chicubs (16-15) are 2.5 games back and in fourth place after going four and six in the last 10 days. Manager Charlie Grimm's club is suffering from poor pitching (4.06 ERA) and mediocre hitting (.246). Pitching-wise only Mordecai Brown (5-1 3.18) and Ed Reulbach (3-1 3.00) have gotten the job done. Offensively Turkey Stearnes (.345/8/25), Mark Grace (.322/3/18) and Ernie Banks (.280/4/25) have produced this year. Tommy Lasorda's Dodgers (15-15) are in fifth place in the standings, three games behind. Brooklyn has split their last 10 encounters. Lasorda's club has hit very well with a .266 team batting average, but has been atrocious on the hill with a 4.42 ERA. Hitters Zach Wheat 9/356/6/22), Duke Snider (.301/8/26), Jackie Robinson (.301/1/11) and Gil Hodges (.261/7/20) have done their part. They just need some help from the pitchers. Only Dazzy Vance (2-0 3.63), who has been injured, Don Sutton (4-1 4.19), Don Newcombe (3-3 3.02) and reliever Ron Perranoski (1-0 1.80) have been adequate so far. After a great start, the Cincinnati Reds (14-16) have now sunken down to the sixth spot and are four games out. They are 5-5 in the last 10 games. Sparky Anderson's Reds are hitting very well with a .277 team batting average and rank in the middle with a 3.93 ERA. Vada Pinson (.322/2/10), Frank Robinson (.309/4/14), Ted Kluszewski (.300/6/18), Tony Perez (.298/4/18), Dave Conception (.293/1/13), Pete Rose (.291/0/12) and Ed Roush (.275/0/16) head up the hit brigade. Only one starter has done well, Gary Nolan (4-1 2.79). Several relievers have stood out with Kenny Raffensberger (1-0 1.23) and two saves to his credit, Clay Carroll (0-0 1.93) and one save and Jose Rijo (0-0 1.42). Raffensberger and Rijo may soon be added to the starting rotation. The Phillies (13-19) have fallen upon hard times with a four-and-six mark in the last 10 decisions and rest in seventh place, six games out of first. Danny Ozark has the worst staff in both leagues. It is hard to win with a 4.85 ERA. The batters are not much better and are hitting only .245 on the year. Only Curt Schilling (1-1 1.37) is pitching well, all in relief. He has 3 saves and is now in the starting rotation. New Japanese rookie, Jiro Noguchi (3-1 4.00) with one save has been somewhat effective. He has been used as a sometimes starter and reliever. The only fulltime starter hitting over .250 is catcher Biz Mackey (.292/3/13). Lefty O'Doul (.410/0/8), Jimmy Rollins (.333/0/1) and Von Hayes (.292/3/5) have done well recently since being promoted to the starting lineup. Ozark said to expect more changes as he tries to right a sinking ship. If it wasn't for the Detroit Tigers, the last place St. Louis Cardinals (12-19) would be the worst team in the AAA. The Redbirds went 3-7 in the last ten days. Tony Larussa's club is last in both leagues with a microscopic .238 average and near the bottom with a 4.38 ERA. Only Dizzy Dean has a decent record with a 2-2 mark and 2.82 ERA. Only Rogers Hornsby (.284/3/15), Johnny Mize (.274/3/15) and Stan Musial (.270/3/14) have been any threat with the bat at all. Ducky Medwick (.310/1/8) has perked up the offense since going into the lineup. Tuesday, May 20, 1902 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHICAGO WHITE SOX SURGE TO THE TOP IN AL BY 3 GAMES OVER PHILADELPHIA...AND 3.5 GAMES OVER RED SOX, INDIANS AND BROWNS The Chicago White Sox won 7 of their last 10 and leaped into first place in the American League. The Chisox are not doing it with mirrors, they are doing it with solid hitting and superb pitching. With an overall 3.07 ERA they are the best in both leagues by far. Only the Boston Braves, the NL's top club, are close to them with a 3.40 ERA. Manager Al Lopez has a solid set of starters: Wilbur Wood (5-2 2.51), Gary Peters (3-1 2.55), Ed Walsh (3-4 2.23) and Ed Cicotte (5-2 3.33). Hitting-wise the Pale Hose's offense has been led by Joe Jackson (.384/2/24), Eddie Collins (.301/1/14), Frank Thomas (.245/7/24) and Harold Baines (.275/3/22). Lopez recently added rookie Paul Konerko (.378/2/13) at 3B and Dick Lundy (.373/1/6) and Buck Weaver (.321/0/5) platooned at shortstop. These moves are already starting to pay dividends. Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics (21-18) have swooned a little bit after a fine early season showing and are now in second place, trailing by 3.5 games. In the last ten games they have won only four of them. The A's are the highest scoring team in the AL with a .269 Team BA, but are next to last in pitching with a 4.17 ERA. Eddie Plank (6-1 2.98), Lefty Grove (6-2 3.53) and Rube Waddell (3-3 2.89) have been Mack's only effective hurlers this season. Vida Blue (1-2 7.20) and Jim "Catfish" Hunter (1-5 4.27) have not done the job in the starting rotation. Bobby Shantz (2-1 1.65) and Dennis Eckersley (1-2 2.20) have been doing well in relief roles and may get a shot at starting soon. The A's offense has been paced by Jimmie Foxx (.313/9/28), Al Simmons (.305/5/28), Mickey Cochrane (.331/4/25) and rookie Shigeo Nagashima (.350/4/19). Mack recently inserted Danny Murphy (.386/1/5) at second base and Frank Baker (.333/2/10) in leftfield. The Bosox (21-19) are tied with Cleveland and St. Louis for third place, 3.5 games out of first place. Boston has won only four of their last six encounters. The Red Sox are getting by on their .266 batting average and home run power. Oscar Charleston (333/4/19), Ted Williams (.260/11/36), rookie David Ortiz (.262/6/24), Joe Cronin (.304/1/14) and Johnny Pesky (.330/0/12) are leading the Boston attack. Manager Joe McCarthy platooned Fred Lynn (.315/2/7) and Ellis Burks (.361/1/3) in centerfield and it is going well. Pitching-wise only Roger Clemens (6-1 2.43) and Pedro Martinez (5-2 2.36) have been productive. Both have been outstanding. In the bullpen Dick Radatz (3-1 2.92) has been excellent and has five saves. The Red Sox would be doing quite well if it had better pitching. McCarthy is hoping for a turnaround in the mound department. Cleveland (21-19) has been hot of late and finished out the last ten games with six victories. Manager Steve O'Neill has a good group of starters, who have a composite 3.68 ERA. Herb Score (5-3 2.82) heads the group. Addie Joss (4-3 3.38), Bob Feller (3-2 3.11) and Early Wynn (3-3 3.19) also have shown well this year. Beyond these guys it has been abyssmal in the bullpen for the Tribe. Help is really needed there for Cleveland to challenge. On the offensive side of the baseball, Larry Doby (.331/7/19), Luke Easter (.315/6/27), Tris Speaker (.305/0/16) and rookie catcher Victor Martinez (.269/4/23) have led the charge this season. Earl Weaver's St. Louis Brown (21-19) ballclub has been a blast this season, literally and figuratively. They lead the American League with 44 home runs, runnerup to the Braves, who lead the Alltime Allstar Association with 48. In their last ten games St. Louis has been the victor 5 times and now rest tied for third place, 3.5 games behind. The Browns have been paced by Josh Gibson (.264/10/27), Ken Williams (.304/6/24), Vern Stephens (.298/5/19), rookie Doug DeCinces (.259/8/22) and Eddie Murray (.250/9/26). St. Louis' shortcoming is its pitching. Only Jim Palmer (5-0 2.37), Hoyt Wilhelm (5-2 3.15) and Mike Mussina (3-5 3.01) have been up to par so far. Weaver got some good news today that last year's ace, Mike Cuellar (1-0 0.96), has rejoined the club after a stay on the disabled list. He was hit by a line drive and suffered a concussion several weeks ago and missed six starts. The sixth place New York Yanks (20-21) are still muddling along with a 5-5 mark over the last ten games. Manager Casey Stengel's charges are making a little progress and are beginning to show some signs of hitting. The team BA is now .254 and the Bronx Bombers are showing some signs of coming out of the doldrums. Here are the batting leaders on the club: Lou Gehrig (.303/8/29), Babe Ruth (.268/10/28), Joe DiMaggio (.254/6/21) and Derek Jeter (.277/4/29). Joe Gordon (.322/3/18) had a great start this season, but has been hurt for the last few weeks and will not come back until sometime in mid-June. But the pitchers are still struggling along in mediocrity with a 3.79 ERA. NY's top twirlers thus far have been Lefty Gomez (5-3 2.41), Whitey Ford (3-3 3.36) and Herb Pennock (3-2 2.00). Washington (19-22) has been running hot and cold over the last ten days and finished the period with a 5-5 record, only good enought to put them in seventh place, six games in the rear of the first place White Sox. The Senators bat well as a team with a .264 average. Leading their attack are Goose Goslin (.325/4/27), Rod Carew (.308/0/11) and Cecil Travis (.305/1/19). Manager Clark Griffith's mound corps has had a tough season. Only Walter Johnson (5-2 3.62), Dutch Leonard (4-2 2.78) and Firpo Marberry (3-1 2.98) have had good seasons thus far. Sparky Anderson's Detroit Tigers (13-27) have been awful...4-6 in the last ten contests...and this year. The Tigers have batted .241 up to now and are in last place, 11.5 games out of first. Detroit pitching hasn't been very good either...a whopping 4.36 ERA...they are near the bottom in almost all categories. Only Virgil Trucks (2-2 2.77) among the mound staff has good stats. Batting leaders are: Ty Cobb (.335/3/21), Harry Heilmann (.329/4/12), Hank Greenberg (.240/7/26) and Harvey Kuenn (.245/4/19). Pitcher Hilton Smith (1-4 3.31) has been injured and will miss about two weeks. Jack Morris (1-0 3.00) was called up to fill in for him and got a win in his initial start. ALLTIME ALLSTAR ASSOCIATION
Tuesday, May 20, 1902 NATIONAL LEAGUE NY GIANTS AND BOSTON BRAVES ARE TIED FOR FIRST...PIRATES HALF GAME BACK...BROOKLYN 1.5 GAMES BEHIND...CHICUBS TRAIL BY 2.5 GAMES The Boston Braves (23-17) have moved up into a first place tie with the New York Giants. They have won 6 of their last 10 and 12 of the last 20 games. They are doing it with longballs and strong pitching arms. Skipper Bobby Cox has always stressed pitching, but this year he has the hitting to go with it. The Braves have bombed 48 home runs, more than any other team in both leagues. Buck Leonard heads the lineup with 12 homers, 31 RBIs and a .317 batting average. Chipper Jones (.311/9/30), rookie Frank Torre (.298/3/16), rookie Pete Hill (.271/5/15) and Eddie Mathews (.248/8/18) have all contributed to the Boston attack. Parttimer Tommy Holmes has chipped in with a .328 BA, 2 HRs and 12 RBIs. The pitching continues to be solid with starters Greg Maddux (4-1 2.65), Warren Spahn (3-2 2.79), Phil Niekro (5-2 4.14), Tom Glavine (3-2 3.78) and reliever Steve Bedrosian (1-0 0.00 2 saves). John McGraw's crew, the New York Giants (23-17) have been 5-5 in the last 10 games and are now deadlocked with Boston for the top NL spot. They are hitting .286 as a team, paced by Bill Terry (.339/4/23), Martin Dihigo (.323/4/13), Freddie Lindstrom (.313/4/25), Roger Bresnahan (.311/1/13), Mel Ott (.287/6/22) and Alvin Dark (.284/1/15). Rookie subs, outfielder Chino Smith (.389/0/3) and catcher Harry Danning (.385/0/3) have done well in limited roles. On the mound Carl Hubbell (7-1 2.34) and Christy Mathewson (5-0 4.06) have been almost unbeatable this year. McGraw is hoping Juan Marichal (4-3 3.88) will regain last season's form. If he, Barry Bonds (.254/6/17) and Wilie Mays (.268/2/19) play up to their potential, McGraw says his club is in fine shape to take the NL crown and the World Series. The Pirates (24-19) are wearing out the baseballs with the most runs scored and a .288 Team BA, best in the Alltime Allstar Association. The Bucs are 6-4 in the most recent games and are in third place, just a half game out. Danny Murtaugh's club has 5 regulars in the lineup hitting over .300: Arky Vaughan (.329/3/22), Roberto Clemente (.329/4/40), Honus Wagner (.326/5/22), rookie Sadaharu Oh (.320/11/41) and Pie Traynor (.302/2/11). Lloyd Waner's (.415/0/8) bat has recently been added to the regular lineup. Clemente and Oh have been devastating with the bat this year. They are the most productive twosome in both leagues with 81 RBIs between them. Pittsburgh is blessed with a fine group of starters: Deacon Phillippe (6-2 2.75), Vic Willis (4-2 2.45) and Ray Kremer (4-2 2.39). Relief ace, Roy Face (2-0 1.44 2 saves) has been outstanding, too. The hottest team in the National League right now are the fourth place Brooklyn Dodgers (21-18), winners of 7 of their last 10. Brooklyn is now within 1.5 games of the top spot in the NL standings. Like Pittsburgh, Tommy Lasorda's team is doing it with the bat: .277 BA and 45 homers. His top hitters are Zach Wheat (.357/7/29), Duke Snider (.347/9/31), Gil Hodges (.286/9/30), Jackie Robinson (.312/4/14) and Cristobel Torriente (.299/4/17). Another prolific hitter is on the bench and so far has only got an occasional start. Lasorda would love to have rookie Babe Herman's .367 batting average in his lineup. The Bums downfall this season is pitching. They are right at the bottom of the pile with a dismal 4.35 ERA. Only Don Newcombe (4-3 3.77) and Dazzy Vance (2-1 3.32) have ERAs under 4.00 in the starting rotation. Relief specialist Ron Perranoski (1-0 1.59 1 save) has been a standout. To remain in the race, Lasorda needs better performances from Sandy Koufax (3-5 4.10), Don Sutton (4-2 5.27), Don Drysdale (1-1 4.30), rookie Preacher Roe (2-1 3.96) and Eric Gagne (2-1 4.70 3 saves). In fifth place are the Chicago Cubs (21-10). The Bruins are all even in their last 10 games. With a .254 Team BA and a 4.05 ERA, the Cubs are just an average ball club. Manager Charlie Grimm needs improvement in both areas to contend for the the title. Turkey Stearnes (.327/9/31) seems headed for an outstanding season. Mark Grace (.280/3/23) is having a good, solid season. But other than them, the rest are just average or worse. Except for 2 truly fine hurlers, Mordecai Brown (7-1 2.81) and Ed Reulbach (4-1 2.68), all of the other pitchers are average or worse. After a surprisingly great start, the sixth place Cincinnati Reds (18-22) have come back to earth and returned to being themselves again. They are 4 and 6 in the last 10 games. Once their mighty bats were sizzling, but now they have cooled down to only a .265 team batting average. Sparky Anderson's club batted .323 in the first two weeks of the year. All of the regulars have had a big dropoff since that time. However, Tony Perez (.290/7/36), Ted Kluszewski (.291/8/25) and Vada Pinson (.302/2/13) are having good years. In the pitching department Gary Nolan (5-1 2.34) has been sensational and Jim Maloney (2-5 3.30) has been good, but had no run support. No others have stepped up and delivered. As per Skipper Anderson, rookie Ken Raffensberger (1-1 2.53 2 saves) and Jose Rijo (1-0 3.14) will be given an opportunity to move up in the pitching pecking order and get some starts. The seventh place Philadelphia Phillies (18-23) don't seem to be going anywhere this season. In the last 10 games they have split them evenly. Manager Danny Ozark's club has been woeful on the mound and in the batter's box. They are absolutely last with a lofty 4.68 ERA and next to last with a .245 Team BA. The only fulltime player that is having a decent season is Biz Mackey (.305/3/16). Rookie 1B Von Hayes (.361/8/11) and Lefty O'Doul (.306/0/9) have helped out offensively since moving into the starting lineup. All the rest should be benched, but you have to start at least 8 of them according to the rules. Only 3 hurlers have done well, none of them fulltime starters this year: rookie Jiro Noguchi (5-1 3.00), Rick Wise (1-1 3.18) and Curt Schilling (2-1 2.20 3 saves). All three are now in the starting rotation. Last year's stalwarts, Pete Alexander (4-3 4.26) and Robin Roberts (1-6 7.47) are struggling severely this season. Roberts is in the bullpen and still not doing well. Alexander (19-8 2.27) was the 1901 National League's Golden Arm Award winner and Roberts (15-8 3.30) was a solid starter. The St. Louis Cardinal fans and Manager Tony Larussa have very little to cheer about this season. The Redbirds (14-26) won only 2 out of the last ten games and are deep in the NL cellar, already 9 games behind the leaders, the Braves and the Giants. Not very good for a club the baseball experts picked to finish second behind the NY Giants. Offensively the Cards have been just that...offensive. As a team they are hitting a minuscule .232, with Rogers Hornsby (.295/4/21) being the only regular over .250. The pitchers are almost as bad with a 4.37 ERA with only Dizzy Dean (3-3 3.25) and hardluck Mort Cooper (2-6 2.67) providing any kind of a bright spot. It looks like a long season for St. Louis. Always a good day when EC updates this
.I like the summary format too--reminds me of those 'weekly wrap-ups' Sports Illustrated did in the 70's and 80's.

I hope all of you like the new format. It means I should be able to play a season much quicker than the year it took to play the first year. It looks like I may be able to play a season in about 3-4 months. Even quicker once I finish with a very time-consuming project, that should end in the next 2 months. I will be able to play more games then. Comments and suggestions are always appreciated. |

ALLTIME ALLSTAR ASSOCIATION
Monday, June 9, 1902 AMERICAN LEAGUE WHITE SOX GO IN TO A SPIN, FALL TO FIFTH PLACE...INDIANS AND ATHLETICS MOVE INTO A TIE FOR THE AL LEAD...RED SOX AND SURPRISING SENATORS ARE SECOND ONLY 2 GAMES OUT...CHISOX DIP TO FIFTH 2.5 GAMES BEHIND...NY YANKS SIXTH, TRAIL BY 3.5 GAMES...BROWN SEVENTH 3.5 OUT...AND DETROIT IS STILL IN THE BASEMENT TRAILING BY 7 GAMES. The Cleveland Indians (33-28) and the Philadelphia Athletics (33-28) are all knotted up and tied for first place in the American League. It looks like the Indians are finally playing up to their potential this year. They were expected to challenge last year, but never got started and finished sixth. Cleveland went 12-9 in the last 3 weeks to move up in the standings. Skipper Steve O'Neill is doing it with a fine group of starters: Herb Score (8-4 2.85), Early Wynn (6-4 2.85), Bob Feller (5-3 2.99) and Addie Joss (6-4 3.21). Luckily these guys go deep in the game, so O'Neill doesn't have to call on his ineffective relievers. He will soon be scouring the minors for some help in that department. The Indians' staff is rated best in the AL with a 3.72 ERA. Tribe batters are hitting only .258, which is sixth best. But they provide enough offense to get the job done. Tris Speaker (.312/1/23), Willie Wells (.304/5/20), Larry Doby (.303/8/31) and Luke Easter (.275/10/39) are the top hitters. The Philadelphia Athletics (33-28) are 12-10 in the last 3 weeks and they suffered a big loss, when OF Al Simmons (.304/8/35) went out for three weeks with a hip fracture. His bat will be sorely missed. Gus Zernial was called up to replace him, but so far is hitting only .198 with one homer in nine games, but he has driven in 8 runs. Hitting is the name of the A's game with 60 home runs and a .260 team batting average. In addition to Simmons, Manager Connie Mack can call on Mickey Cochrane (.300/4/25), rookie Shigeo Nagashima (.296/5/30), John Henry Lloyd (.291/10/36) and Jimmie Foxx (.278/12/41) for run support. Frank Baker (.323/6/21) in 44 games and Danny Murphy (.295/3/9) in 36 games, have done well since being added to the starting lineup. Philadelphia has to outhit the opposition. The pitching corps has been battered around for a 4.15 ERA, last in the American League. Only starters Lefty Grove (10-2 3.53), Rube Waddell (6-4 3.13) and Eddie Plank (6-4 3.79) have ERAs under 4.00. Rollie Fingers (1-0 2.70 5 Sv), Bobby Shantz (4-3 3.72 2 Sv) and Dennis Eckersley (1-3 3.26 2 Sv) have been effective in the bullpen. Shantz and Eckersley are now starters, but have not done as well as in the relief corps. Ed Rommel is apparently going to get another chance to get into the starting rotation. Joe McCarthy's Boston Red Sox (31-30) are tied for third place with the Washington Senators, both are two games behind the leaders. In the last 3 weeks they are 12-11. The Bosox are the #1 club in hitting with a .265 BA and 57 home runs and fifth with a 3.92 ERA. Ted Williams (.300/16/56) is having an outstanding year and is the team's leading hitter. Rookie David Ortiz (.279/13/42), Oscar Charleston (.300/7/28), Joe Cronin (.296/2/20) and Johnny Pesky (.294/0/17) have provided some offense as well. Rookie outfielder Ellis Burks (.367/5/10) has put up some very good numbers in 28 games. He is currently being platooned with Fred Lynn (.253/2/11), who has played in 37 games. McCarthy has indicated Burks will move into that slot and Lynn will be benched. Pitching-wise Roger Clemens (8-3 2.72) has stood out, leading the league in strikeouts and is third in ERA. Pedro Martinez (6-4 3.38) has done well, but George Ruth (5-6 3.90) is brilliant in one game and lackluster in the next. Relief ace, Dick Radatz (3-2 2.41), has the most saves in the AL with 8, but has blown 3 of them. Smokey Joe Wood (3-4 4.79) and Cy Young (3-6 5.03) have been disappointments. Young is in the bullpen now and it looks like Wood will be going there soon. The only problem is McCarthy doesn't have much quality as replacements. Give him another starter or two and get Nomar Garciappara (.249/3/20) going with the bat and the Red Sox could make some noise in the AL pennant chase. Another surprising club in the AL are the Washington Senators (32-31), who suddenly find themselves tied for third place. In the last three weeks they have gone 13-9 and move up in the standings. Solid pitching and hitting is doing it for Manager Connie Mack. The Nats are second with a 3.77 ERA and lead the league with a .266 batting average. They have only 31 home runs, but timely hits get them the runs they need. Leading the Senators' hit parade are Goose Goslin (.310/4/37), Cecil Travis (.318/1/26), Rod Carew (.313/0/18) and 3B platoon duo of Gary Gaetti (.274/3/19) playing in 37 games and Corey Koskie (.282/2/16) in 33 games. Gaetti broke his wrist and will be out for 5 weeks. Minor leaguer, Eddie Yost, has been called up to fill his roster slot. Yost will platoon with Koskie. Washington has fine set of starters, headed by Dutch Leonard (7-3 2.67) and Walter Johnson (.7-2 3.59). Johnson recently developed an elbow problem and will miss a couple starts. Also in the rotation are Camilo Pascual (5-4 3.58), Firpo Marberry (4-3 3.28) and Bert Blyleven (2-1 3.18). Mack needs some longball hitters and has a few in the minors that might be brought up soon. Al Lopez and the Chicago White Sox (33-33) were on the top of the world and the top of the American League standings just 3 weeks ago, but a 7-16 record has sent them spiralling down to fifth place, 2.5 games out of first. They still have good pitching with the best ERA in baseball, 3.48, but have taken a tumble in both pitching and hitting. The best in the starting rotation have been Wilbur Wood (7-3 2.94) and Ed Walsh (5-4 2.44). Recent adds to the rotation Gary Peters (3-3 3.21) and Billy Pierce (2-2 2.73) have done well. Ed Cicotte (5-7 3.92) and Joe Horlen (5-5 3.71) have struggled the during this losing stretch. Shoeless Joe Jackson (.365/3/34) is the top hitter in the AL and is putting together another great season. Frank Thomas (.274/14/47) is another big gun for the Sox and Lopez. The Chicago pilot has gotten good mileage out of his bench. He has platooned quite a few players. Leftfielders Minnie Minoso (.322/3/11) playing in 19 games and Harold Baines (.237/5/27) in 27 games have been quite productive, as well as the rightfield combo of Magglio Ordonez (.322/3/150) playing in 28 games and Happy Felsch (.257/5/14) in 45 games. Lopez says he is leaning toward making Minoso and Ordonez the fulltime starters to pep up the offense. Chicago's pitching is good enough to win, hitting is where they need to improve. Casey Stengel's Bronx Bombers (31-32) are beginning to live up to their name and are hitting the ball with authority. Sixth place New York is 11-11 in the last three weeks, but are only three games off the pace. A good winning streak would put the Yanks up where they want to be in no time at all. As a team they are now hitting .257, up from a season low of .236. Babe Ruth (.300/21/48) and Lou Gehrig (.288/11/40) are leading the Bombers' attack again this year. Ruth is the top home run hitter in the Alltime Allstar Association again this year. As a team, they lead the American League with 71 circuit blasts and are second to the Boston Braves' 75 in both leagues. However, they are still missing Joe Gordon's (.322/3/18) contributions. He is still injured and will miss a few more weeks. He drove in over 100 runs last year and started off with a bang this year before being sidelined with a knee ligament problem. Like most of the Yankees, Derek Jeter (.301/7/28) and Joe DiMaggio (.274/11/33) started off slowly this season, but have picked it up in the last month. Bob Meusel (.373/2/16) has really blistered the ball since being platooned in rightfield with Earl Combs (.289/2/11). The team ERA stands at 3.90, just a little above the league average. Only Lefty Gomez (6-5 2.72) and Whitey Ford (5-5 2.96) have been effective for Stengel this year. Ron Guidry (5-5 4.71) and Waite Hoyt (2-6 5.04) have not been impressive thus far. Herb Pennock (4-4), recently placed in the starting rotation, has put up several strong starts. Bullpen specialist, Mariano Rivera (5-3 4.01 7 Sv) has been dependable. The Yanks may be on the move in the AL title chase. Earl Weaver's St. Louis Browns (30-32) have gone into the pits in the past three weeks with a 9-13 mark and have dropped down to the seventh spot in the standings, but only trailing by 3.5 games. They have come down to earth after leading the entire AAA in home runs earlier. Top sluggers in the Browns' arsenal are Josh Gibson (.262/13/33), Eddie Murray (.251/13/34), Doug DeCinces (.22/9/29), Vern Stephens (.287/8/25) and Ken Williams (.291/6/24). But most of them have dropped off considerably of late. George Sisler (.262/5/25) has slumped severely this season after posting a robust .337 average last year. Without the homers and the hitting, the pitching staff is having a tough time, too. Hoyt Wilhelm (7-2 2.96), Jim Palmer (6-3 3.43) and Mike Mussina (5-7 3.67) continue to make good outings, but could use a little better run support. All of the other pitchers on the staff are having mediocre to bad years with ERAs mainly over 5.00 this season. It looks like the Browns could be headed back to the second division after a short stay up with the contenders. If the sluggers return, then St. Louis could perhaps reach fourth or fifth in the standings. But it looks like the bottom of the league is where they will end up. Eighth place Detroit (27-36) has finally started playing like they are capable and they are the only thing between the Browns and last place. They are 14-9, the best record in the American League over the last three weeks. Only the St. Louis Cardinals of the National League at 13-8 had a better mark. Manager Hughie Jennings' bunch have been putting it together, both hitting and pitching, and look more like last year's third place club. The Tigers' bat brigade is topped by Ty Cobb (.354/7/38), who is having another terrific year, even better than last year. Hank Greenberg (.270/12/51), Charlie Gehringer (.275/7/31) and Harry Heilmann (.305) all are showing signs of breaking out of their season-long slumps. Since being put in at third base, Dick McAuliffe (.295/4/12) has added some punch to the lineup from the leadoff spot. Mound-wise Hal Newhouser (6-4 3.56) and Jim Bunning has been the only season-long starters. Virgil "Fire" Trucks (4-4 3.39), Schoolboy Rowe (3-1 3.75) and Jack Morris (2-1 3.23) have given them solid efforts in the last few weeks. Things are looking up for Detroit. See League Boxscores, Standings and League Reports here: http://aaa.allsimbaseball.com/index....tpage&Itemid=1 NATIONAL LEAGUE BRAVES TAKE NL LEAD BY 4 PERCENTAGE POINTS OVER PIRATES...NY GIANTS TUMBLE TO THIRD 1.5 GAMES OUT...DODGERS ARE FOURTH 2.5 GAMES BEHIND...CHICUBS FIFTH TRAIL BY 3.5 GAMES...CINCY REDS IN SIXTH BY A PERCENTAGE POINT OVER SEVENTH PLACE CARDS, BOTH 7.5 GAMES OUT...AND PHILS ARE ON BOTTOM 9.5 GAMES BEHIND.
