NATIONAL LEAGUE

CARDS FIRST IN NATIONAL LEAGUE...CUBS AND GIANTS CLOSE BEHIND

The pennant race is still going strong in the National League with four clubs battling for the title. The St. Louis Cardinals (73-51) are in first place and have a narrow 1-game edge over the runnerup Chicago Cubs, 2 over the third place NY Giants and a 6.5-game lead over fourth place Brooklyn.

The Redbirds finished the month with a 21-18 mark to hold on to the top spot. Tony Larussa's club is doing it with some fine hitting (.266 BA - 2nd) and good power (131 HR - 4th). Stan Musial (.310-27-80-82) and Johnny Mize (.288-20-95-76) are the big guns with lots of help from Dodie Moore (.295-16-56-68), Rogers Hornsby (.276-1-62-72), Joe Medwick (.274-11-59-52) and Jim Edmunds (.267-14-43-40).

St. Louis gets good pitching, too, with a 3.84 ERA. Harry Brecheen (13-5 3.03), Mike Morris (13-8 3.52), John Tudor (13-9 4.31) and Larry Jackson (10-6 3.88) have done their job as starters and Harvey Haddix (6-3 3.44) has stepped into the closer role and made it his own with 17 saves. For the stretch run, it is rumored that last year's ace, Satchel Page (4-6 4.10) is going to be restored to the starting rotation. He will take Howie Pollet's (4-6 4.25) slot. The Cardinals will have to kick it up a notch to win as Chicago is playing its best ball of the season. The Dodgers are hot, too.

Skipper Charlie Grimm's Chicago Cubs (72-52) combine outstanding longball power, good hitting and solid pitching. They are number one in home runs with 151, number one in team BA at .267 and number two with a 3.63 ERA. In recent days the Chicubs have gone 24-16 to get within 1 game of St. Louis.

Grimm fields a power-packed lineup, headed up by Turkey Stearnes (.328-35-104-94) and Cool Papa Bell (.318-12-52-104-80 SB) and Ernie Banks ).235-32-97-63), three of the most productive batters in the Alltime Allstar Association. Toss in Hack Wilson (.252-17-58-57), Bill Dahlen (.288-8-58-69) and Tetsuharu Kawakami (.308-11-48-48) and you have plenty of firepower to throw against the opposition.

Then couple that with an impressive pitching corps that features Mordecai Brown (16-6 2.65), Ed Reulbach (11-10 3.41), Fergie Jenkins (11-9 3.65) and Bill Lee (11-9 3.90) as starters and one of the best fireman in the league, Bruce Sutter (9-4 2.81), who has chalked up 18 saves. If the Bruins continue to play this well, they have an excellent chance to take the National League crown.

The New York Giants (71-53) have possession of the third spot in the NL title chase. They finished the last month at 20-20 and dipped 2 full games in back of St. Louis.

Good arms and good power have been the secret to Manager John McGraw's ballclub this season. Paced by Christy Mathewson (15-7 2.77), Johnny Antonelli (12-5 2.88) and Juan Marichal (8-2 3.49) New York is third in ERA at 3.71 and tied for second in homers with 134. Martin Dihigo (.313-23-85-90), Barry Bonds (.275-28-72-80), Mel Ott (.269-20-75-75) and Willie McCovey (.255-20-73-63) have supplied the runs. McGraw has restored Willie Mays to center field and is hoping Juan Marichal can make his club better down the stretch. McGraw says Mays (.252-6-15-19) and Carl Hubbell (12-11 4.01) have to rise to the occasion and play up to their potential for the Polo Grounders to have a chance.

The fourth place Brooklyn Dodgers (67-58) have been steady all season long and have been coming on strong in the last few weeks. In all the Dodgers were 22-19 in the last month and have climbed to within 6.5 games of first place. Manager Tommy Lasorda is blessed with the National League's best starting five: Sandy Koufax (15-9 2.47), Dazzy Vance (13-9 2.79), Don Sutton (11-8 3.48), Don Drysdale (10-13 3.58) and newcomer Claude Osteen (3-0 3.77). They have helped compile a 3.59 ERA, good enough for the top position in that category.

All they need is a few runs from Jackie Robinson (.301-6-30-69), Pee Wee Reese (.295-7-42-69), Zach Wheat (.284-9-74-64), Adrian Beltre (.279-25-82-62), Mike Piazza (.269-17-56-44) and the recently-activated Cristobel Torriente (.290-7-32-32), who has missed almost half the season with injuries. The Bums are now healthy and hungry with their sights set on first place.

In the fifth place slot in the National League are the Philadelphia Phillies (58-67). Manager Danny Ozark has worked wonders with them this year. He gives credit to his starting rotation and third baseman Mike Schmidt (.283-22-63-70) and Dick Allen (.263-22-77-58), both have been reinserted into the starting nine and have provided vital run support. Chuck Klein (.260-18-72-66) has made his presence known, too. Pete Alexander (12-6 3.50), Steve Carlton (11-4 3.23) and two Japanese imports, Jiro Noguchi (11-9 3.12) and Akiro Bessho (8-13 4.44) have been tried and true this season.

The Phils were 16-21 during the last month and now trail the Redbirds by 15.5 games. Fifth place appears to be Philadelphia's most likely finish.

The battle for sixth place will be between the Reds, Braves and Pirates. Right now the Cincinnati Reds (54-70) are 19 games out of first place and 12.5 out of the first division. Manager Sparky Anderson's club went 19-21 and are in sixth place. The Reds hit for average and some power and are the third best in the NL with a .260 Team BA. Ed Roush (.362-1-52-48), Paul O'Neill (.324-13-43-63), Ted Kluszewski (.267-23-92-69) and Frank Robinson (.257-24-69-78) have come through with the big hits this year. Only Pete Donahue (13-8 4.79) is enjoying a good season on the mound. Overall Cincy is absolutely last with a 4.54 ERA.

The Boston Braves (52-71) topped out at 19-21 this month and are now 20.5 games behind the first place Cards. The only bright spots on the roster are pitcher Greg Maddux (10-7 3.58) and hitters Tommy Holmes (.303-12-44-63), Chipper Jones (.295-22-70-87) and rookie second baseman Marcus Giles (.297-4-28-26). Giles has been with the club less than half the season. Boston could move up if John Smoltz (8-13 3.84) and Warren Spahn (8-15 4.28) can turn it around in the last month of the regular season. The Braves are a fair hitting team with a .255 BA and 134 home runs. What kills them is the 4.42 ERA, next-to-last behind the Reds.

It hasn't been a good season for Danny Murtaugh's Pittsburgh Pirates (50-75). They have been bad enough for the cellar, 23.5 games out. The Bucs just completed the last month with a 19-23 mark. Paul Waner (.305-1-27-46) and Pie Traynor (.294-3-38-65) regularly make contact, but produce little in the way of run production. Roberto Clemente (.275-10-78-60) and Ralph Kiner (.254-22-61-46) make contact less frequently, but do drive in runs. The Pirates best moundmen are Sam Leever (10-5 2.76), Deacon Phillippe (8-17 3.27) and Bob Friend (6-3 3.57). Pittsburgh's chances to escape the basement do not look very good.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

DODGERS MAKE IT A FOUR-TEAM PENNANT CHASE IN NL...SCHEDULE FAVORS REDBIRDS

Tommy Lasorda's Brooklyn Dodgers have won nine of the last ten and climbed to within two games of the co-leading Cardinals and Cubs. St. Louis has been 4-6 and Chicago 5-5 during the last week and a half, while John McGraw's Giants have stumbled at 3-7 to dip three and a half games out of the National League pennant chase. Smart money is to go with the redhot Bums, led by pitchers Sandy Koufax (17-9), Dazzy Vance (14-9) and Don Drysdale (12-13), with some good mound help from Don Sutton (12-9) and the recently-promoted Claude O'Steen (4-0). O'Steen has been added to the starting rotation, replacing Kevin Brown (9-10). The Dodger offense has been paced by Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson, both hitting over .300 at the top of the lineup. Adrian Beltre and Mike Piazza have supplied the longball with 28 and 19 respectively. Recent additions to the lineup, Duke Snider in right field and Dolf Camilli at first base have sparked the Brooklyn attack. Both have hit over .300 in the last month of the season.

Down the homestretch Manager Tony Larussa of the Redbirds is trying to find another starter to go with Harry Brecheen (14-5) and Matt Morris (15-8). Thus far Dizzy Dean (5-4) and Satchel Paige (4-7) have fizzled in late season starts. John Tudor (13-11) and Larry Jackson (11-6) have struggled this month, too. St. Louis is hoping their hitters will go on a rampage to help out the beleaguered mound staff. Stan Musial and Johnny Mize have sizzled at bat this season. Musial has delivered 29 homers and 87 RBIs, while Mize has totaled 22 fourbaggers and 98 RBIs.

Moe Brown (19-6) is carrying the Chicago Cubs on his broad shoulders and is 10-1 over the last month and a half. Other starters Ed Reulbach (11-10), Bill Lee (12-10) and Ferguson Jenkins (11-11) have performed dismally in August. Only rookie Guy Bush (5-7) has stepped up with two wins this month. It looks like the Bruin bombers will have to hit their way to the NL crown. Turkey Stearnes could be headed for the Triple Crown as he is leading the league with a .333 batting average, 41 roundtrippers and 111 RBIs. He has a good lead in each of those categories and just might win them all to become the first player in the Alltime Allstar Association to do this. Ernie Banks has contributed 34 homers and 103 RBIs to the Cub cause and Cool Papa Bell 111 runs scored and 89 stolen bases.

John McGraw is not happy at the Polo Grounds. His club is not hitting or pitching well. Christy Mathewson (16-8) is only 4-4 in July and August, Johnny Antonelli (12-6) is 4-3 and Carl Hubbell (13-13) is only 4-6 during that time. New York has had their chance to take over the National League race, but just didn't take advantage of the opportunity. Only Martin Dihigo is consistently a threat with a .319 batting average, second to Stearnes of Chicago. Dihigo has 28 homers, 99 RBIs and 98 runs scored to go with it. Only he and Mel Ott are hitting .300 this month. Barry Bonds tops the Giants with 31 home runs, followed by Willie McCovey's 23 and Ott's 22. McGraw's group needs all of his pitchers and hitters to sieze the month to take the NL title. It doesn't seem that this is likely to happen.

Schedule-wise the St. Louis Cards have the easiest time as they have only second division clubs left to play, while the Dodgers, Cubs and Giants will battle one another down the stretch. The schedule could be a decisive element in determining who will go to the World Series...and the Redbirds have a huge advantage.

I am picking the Cardinals to win because of this.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

NY YANKS 8 GAMES UP ON SENATORS AND HEADED TO THE WORLD SERIES

Casey Stengel and his New York Yankees are cruising in the American League and headed to the World Series for the third time in four seasons, missing out only in 1903. The Bronx Bombers are parlaying fine pitching with home run power and lead the surprising Washington Senators by 8 games. New York is 6-4 in the last 10 days, while the Nats went 8-2.

The only race left in the American League is the race for third and fourth place. The Red Sox are currently in the third spot, 17.5 games behind, followed by fourth place Cleveland, 18 games out, and the Athletics are fifth, trailing by 21 games.

New York's mound corps has been great this year with a 3.26 ERA, headed by twenty-game winner, Whitey Ford (20-6), Lefty Gomez (18-5), Herb Pennock (15-8) and rookie Jack Chesbro (11-4). And even when Stengel has to go to the bullpen, it gets even better there with Mariano Rivera (6-5). He has a sensational 1.91 ERA and 23 saves on the year. The Yanks are number one in pitching and home runs. The Bronx Bombers have blasted 191 out of the park this year, far and away the tops in the AL. By contrast, the second place Senators have hit only 83 homers. Babe Ruth is on his way to setting a new AAA mark for home runs in a season. He has already tied the record and has 19 games left to break it. Ruth and Cubs slugger, Turkey Stearnes, both presently hold the record of 45. Other Yankee longball experts are Joe DiMaggio with 31, Mickey Mantle 26, Yogi Berra 25, Lou Gehrig 24 and Joe Gordon 18.

Manager Clark Griffith of the Senators has them playing well over their heads. Washington is led by a solid pitching rotation. They have compiled an excellent 3.51 ERA, second to New York. Topping the list are starters Walter Johnson (15-8), rookie Alvin Crowder (12-5) and Frank Viola (12-8). Griffith has no problem going to the bullpen for relief, either. Rick Aguilera (8-4) has run up a recording-setting 29 saves so far this year. This tops the Giants Robb Nen's old mark of 20 set in 1903. Rookie first baseman Kent Hrbek has been the main cog in the Nats offense, hammering 25 home runs and driving in 91 runs this season. The Senators are first in team batting average at .263, edging the Yanks by one point. Heinie Manush has hit a lofty .358 in 88 games since being put into the starting outfield. Goose Goslin's steady .292 and 70 RBIs have been a big plus for the Senators. Sam Rice also has hit .335 in 58 games this year. Washington will not likely catch New York this year and will probably have to settle for the runnerup position, but they have battled the Bombers quite well this season. New York only won the season series 12 games to 10.

Virgil Trucks (11-13 4.20) of Detroit hurled a 5-hitter to annihilate second place Washington, 11-2...Vic Wertz homers twice and drives in 5 runs.

FIRST PLACE CUBS NIP PHILS...CARDS LOSE CLOSE ONE TO REDS...AND DODGERS SLIP BY GIANTS...CHICAGO LEADS BY ST. LOUIS BY 1.5 GAMES, BROOKLYN BY 3 AND NEW YORK BY 5

AMERICAN LEAGUE

RUTH IS IN THE RUNNING FOR THE TRIPLE CROWN IN AL

Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees is within striking distance of the AL batting leader, Ty Cobb of the Tigers. Cobb is holding the top spot with a .327 average with teammate Charlie Gehringer in the number two position at .319. Ruth is currently batting .316 and is in third place.

The Yankee slugger is comfortably ahead in home runs with 46, a new AAA league record. New York's Joe DiMaggio is second with 32. The Babe has a solid lead in RBIs with 106 to DiMag's 96.

CUBS STEARNES COULD BE HEADED FOR THE NL TRIPLE CROWN

The Bruins fine all around performer, Turkey Stearnes has a solid chance to win the National League Triple Crown. It doesn't look like anyone will be able to top his home run, RBI and batting average totals. Stearnes is outhitting NY's Martin Dihigo .338 to .320, leads his Cub teammate Ernie Banks in homers 42 to 35 and in RBIs, 121 to 107.

No one has ever won the Triple Crown in the Alltime Allstar Association's previous three seasons.

The third place Dodgers and Don Sutton (13-9 3.53) humbled the NY Giants and Carl Hubbell 10-4 in the first game...Adrian Beltre (.279) drove in 3 and Dolf Camilli (.276) collected a two-run homer...Hubbell (13-14 4.10) took the loss.

The Giants Jeff Tesreau (8-9 4.13) combined with Robb Nen to get the 4-3 victory in the second contest...New York held on after the Dodgers scored 3 in the seventh to cut it to one run...Nen (2-0 1.88) got his second save since recently being recalled from the minors...Claude O'Steen (4-1 3.23) lost for the first time.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

YANKS AND SENATORS BOTH ARE SWEPT BY RED SOX AND TIGERS...NY STILL AHEAD BY 10.5 GAMES

The Bosox slammed New York in a sweep...Roger Clemens (12-12 4.34) checked the Bombers on 6 hits in the 8-2 opener and beat Herb Pennock (15-9 3.15)...The Rocket even hit a homer...catcher Kotsuya Nomura (.286) led the way with 3 RBIs.

The Tigers took a twinbill from the second place Senators, 3-2 and 7-1...It was Washington's fourth successive loss...In game one Masaichi Kaneda (3-8 4.82) went 8 for the win and John Hiller (3-5 4.39) finished it out for his 18th save...Hank Greenberg's (.291) single off loser Alvin Crowder (12-6 3.42) scored Ty Cobb (.326) with the winning run in the last of the eighth...Crowder only permitted 6 base hits.

Wild Bill Donovan (4-1 3.42) chunked a solid game in the nightcap, spreading out 8 hits nicely, giving up only a first inning score...The American League's leading hitter, Ty Cobb (.329) went 3-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs...Charley Gehringer (.323) extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a first inning homer...he was 3-3 in the opener...Cobb has a 6 point lead in the batting race...Babe Ruth, trying to collect the Triple Crown, is third at .314.

Today Ruth was 0-3 against the Red Sox in the first game and took the day off in game two.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CUBS BOMB BUMS 10-5...BRAVES EDGE CARDS...AND PHILS BEAT GIANTS...CHICAGO EXPANDS NL LEAD TO 3.5 GAMES OVER REDBIRDS

The first place Chicago Cubs cracked out 15 hits to rout third place Brooklyn, 10-5...A six-run second got rid of starter Dazzy Vance (14-19 2.79)...Stan Hack (.500) delivered four hits and four RBIs and Bill Dahlen (.288) drove in two with a pair of hits, including his 11th home run of the year...Ed Reulbach (12-10 3.55) labored for seven innings, gave up five runs and eleven hits, but garnered the win...with the defeat the Dodgers sunk 4 games out of first place...there are only thirteen games left to play in the regular season.

The second place Cards also got a crushing extra inning loss to the Boston Braves...Greg Maddux gave up a three-run smash to Johnny Mize (.275) in the opening frame, then blanked St. Louis over the next nine innings as Boston outlasted them 4-3 in 11 innings...Hank Aaron (.292) singled in the deciding score off losing pitcher, Bob Gibson (4-4 5.14)...Chipper Jones (.292) slugged his 28th homer and Buck Leonard (.269) slapped #22, both off of Dizzy Dean, who went ten innings and fanned nine Braves in a good outing.

The fourth place Giants lost to Robin Roberts and the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-2...Roberts shut them down on six hits...Chuck Klein (.263) and Mike Schmidt (.268) supplied the firepower...both had two-run shots of loser Juan Marichal (8-5 4.21)...New York now trails first place Chicago by seven games.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

NY YANKS CONTINUE TO CRUISE IN THE AL...SENATORS A DISTANT SECOND

Bob Shawkey, recently added to the starting rotation by Manager Casey Stengel, yielded only two runs in eight solid innings to slip past the Chisox, 4-3...Shawkey also got the game-winning RBI with a fifth inning double...Mickey Mantle (.248) topped the NY offense with a two-run double...Juan Pizarro (1-4 3.33) took the loss in a complete game effort...Mariano Rivera (7-5 2.15) captured his 25th save, but was touched for a run in the ninth.

Runner up Washington was shut out for seven innings 3-0 by the A's righthander Tim Hudson, but awoke with two in the eighth and three more in the ninth to gain a hard-earned 5-4 victory...loser Catfish Hurter (5-7 3.75) walked in the winning run...winning pitcher Walter Johnson (16-8 2.99) went the route, striking out 11...The Yankees lead the Senators by 10.5 games and seem headed for the World Series.

Detroit's Charlie Gehringer (.323) went 1-4 and continued his consecutive game hitting streak to 19 games, but needed extra innings to do it...He got a tenth-inning single to extend it. Cleveland's Addie Joss (10-13 4.00) bested Hal Newhouser (10-16 3.65) 2-1 in an outstanding pitchers' duel. Both hurlers went the distance...Joss stopped the Tigers on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk...Newhouser surrendered six hits, whiffed nine and walked nobody.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

DODGERS AND KOUFAX WHIP FIRST PLACE CUBS AND SLIP INTO SECOND SPOT...BROOKLYN TRAILS CHICAGO BY 3 GAMES...BRAVES BUMP CARDS DOWN TO THIRD

Outstanding lefty Sandy Koufax (19-9 2.22) of Brooklyn shut down the hard-hitting Chicago Cubs 5-0, holding them to just six hits...It was his 19th win this season and his eighth straight...Koufax fanned 8 and walked only one...Mike Piazza (.268) slapped a double and single and drove in two runs...Adrian Beltre (.284) had three hits...the Dodgers climbed to within three games of the first place Bruins...Both teams have twelve games left on the schedule and play each other four more times...with the win Brooklyn moved into second place in the NL standings, a half game in front of St. Louis, who fell to third place.

Braves righthander Lew Burdette (5-4 4.12) knocked off the Cardinals 6-2...he scattered nine hits in a complete game, striking out five and issuing but one base on balls...wildness by starter Howie Pollet (5-7 4.48) cost St. Louis dearly...he gave up only three hits in six innings, but walked ten...with the defeat the Redbirds slipped to third place, 3.5 games behind the first place Cubs.

Fourth place New York continue their late season plunge with their fourth consecutive loss. The Phillies Pete Alexander (14-7 3.11) outhurled the Giants ace Christy Mathewson (16-10 2.91) in an easy 8-2 decision...Mike Schmidt (.267), Dick Allen (.264) and late season addition, Gavvy Cravath (.259) homered for the victors.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

YANKS STRETCH AL LEAD TO 11.5 GAMES OVER SENATORS...NY'S FORD TOPS CHISOX...WASHINGTON FALLS TO PHILADELPHIA

Whitey Ford chalked up his 21st victory with a 4-2 triumph over the White Sox...he has won his last six decisions, three of them shutouts...Lou Gehrig (.292) provided two hits and two RBIs, including his 25th home run of the season...Ed Cicotte (9-16 4.02) hurled a solid game in defeat.

Ed Plank (15-11 2.88) of the fifth place Athletics spun a splendid four-hit 4-0 shutout over the second place Senators...Camilo Pascual (13-13 3.73) pitched a complete game in a losing effort.

All good things come to an end...Detroit's Charlie Gehringer (.320) went hitless and broke his 19-game hitting streak...He grounded out three times...Cleveland's Wes Farrell (6-4 3.47) fired a splendid two-hit shutout against the Tigers, fanning two and walking one...He outdueled Jim Bunning 2-0...Bunning (9-12 4.25) yielded only 5 hits...Albert Belle (.241) doubled in the first run in the eighth inning and Larry Doby (.223) followed with an RBI single.

Thank you for sticking with it.

I plan to continue it as long as a dozen or so of you guys keep following it.

This a fun league to play. I just wish the PBP was better in V6.5...also wish all the basic plays were in it. Those are the only things missing for me in V6.5.

I find that I enjoy it more, if I do daily game wraps instead of monthly summaries.

I think this is how I will do it.

I will just concentrate on the first division teams.

FIRST PLACE CUBS POUND DODGERS...CARDS FINALLY BEAT BRAVES...GIANTS LOSE AGAIN

The NL's top club, the Chicago Cubs, unloaded on the Brooklyn Dodgers 14-5 in a critical game with Turkey Stearnes (.336), Bill Dahlen (.289) and Ernie Banks (.241) smashing home runs in a 15-hit barrage...It was #43 for Stearnes and #36 for Banks...Fergie Jenkins (13-11 4.04) went eight innings for the win, but needed help in the five-run ninth...Don Drysdale (13-14 3.76) was knocked out after four innings and absorbed the loss...Brooklyn fell to third place, 4 games behind Chicago and a half game behind St. Louis.

The Redbirds regained second place by holding on to beat the Boston Braves 8-7...the Braves made it close with four runs in the ninth...Larry Jackson (12-6 4.05) was the winner and Kid Nichols (7-8 4.14) suffered the defeat...reliever Harvey Haddix (6-8 4.09) gave up three hits and a run in the ninth before getting the final two outs...it was his 21st save...hitting standouts for St. Louis were Dobie Moore (.288) with four hits, two roundtrippers, 3 runs scored and a pair of RBIs...Rogers Hornsby (.281) added three hits, a home run and two RBIs...The Cardinals trail the Cubs by 3.5 games and had lost the last two to the sixth place Braves.

The fourth place NY Giants late season woes continued at the hands of the Phillies fine righthander, Akiro Bessho (9-16 4.21)...he stopped them on nine hits, 8-2...Gavvy Cravath (.258) led the Philadelphia with a home run and four RBIs...the Phils shelled loser Johnny Antonelli (12-8 3.33) for five runs in four innings...New York is now 8 games behind the leading Cubs.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

FIRST PLACE YANKEES AND SECOND PLACE SENATORS BOTH LOSE...NY STILL WAY AHEAD...NEARING AL TITLE

The worst the Yankees can finish is tied for first in the American League. Their magic number is down to one. One more Yankee win or one more Senator loss will give the American League pennant to New York.

The Chicago White Sox rapped the Yanks 9-5 with a five-run ninth...Joe Jackson's (.296) triple plated the winning run...Frank Thomas (.220) cracked a pair of homers and drove in three runs...he has 27 fourbaggers and 85 RBIs this year...Lefty Gomez (19-5 2.96) failed to get his 20th victory...he left leading 5-4 after eight innings, but loser Bob Turley (3-4 5.52) and Dave Righetti (0-1 5.40) couldn't save it for him.

Second place Washington, a distant 11.5 games out of first place, also lost...the Philadelphia Athletics tallied two in the thirteenth inning to edge them 7-5...Al Simmons' (.263) sac fly and Jose Canseco's (.198) single provided the deciding runs.

REDBIRDS BLAST BRAVES...TRAIL THE IDLE CUBS BY 3 GAMES...THIRD PLACE DODGERS ARE 4 GAMES OUT

The St. Louis Cardinals picked up a half game on the Chicago Cubs, who took the day off...Harry "the Cat" Brecheen (15-5 3.15) breezed by the Boston Braves 10-1, surrendering 8 hits, fanning five and allowing two bases on balls...he was backed by 14 hits and 2 home runs...Jim Edmonds (.273) and Stan Musial (.302) each belted one out of the park and drove in two runs...Red Schoendienst (.295) was 3-4 with two doubles and two RBIs...the Cards got rid of losing pitcher John Smoltz (11-14 3.95) early with six hits and five runs in the first four innings.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

IDLE NY YANKEES WIN AL FLAG...LEAD UPPED TO 12 GAMES AS SECOND PLACE SENATORS FALL TO A'S

The Bronx Bombers are headed to their third World Series in four years. They are again the champions of the American League.

Philadelphia's Rube Waddell (11-2 2.89) won his ninth straight game, whipping Washington 7-3 and knocking the Senators out of the American League title chase...Waddell gave up seven hits, walked four and fanned four in a complete game outing...homers by Alejandro Oms (.285), John Henry Lloyd (.243) and Al Simmons (.266) paced the Athletics attack...Simmons slammed three hits and drove in three runs...The A's kayoed Firpo Marberry (11-12 3.95) in four innings, collecting five runs and six hits off of him.

Since missing a year and a half because of an arm injury, Waddell has come back with a vengeance...he has won 11 games, despite missing almost three months of the season...he returned to the starting rotation on June 21st.

Eugene,

That's quite a race in the National League. No doubt, those Midwesterners are packing the ballparks for it. As for the AL, the Yankees just appear to be too dominate. Thanks for all your hard work!

Thanks for being a faithful follower of the AAA. I appreciate it.

Ten games to go in the National League and the Cubs are up by two games over the Cards and four over the Dodgers.

Yeah, the Yanks are always dominant...even in OOTPB.

I wonder why the Cincinnati Reds are so bad in OOTPB? I expected the Big Red Machine to do better. The Boston (Milwaukee) Braves, too. I thought their great pitching would keep them in the running.

I think maybe the older pre-1950 pitchers may have better ratings than they should. Also the modern day player may suffer because they don't hit .400 like in the olden days.

I wish I knew a way to equalize the various eras. I tried to make some adjustments...like increasing pre-1950 strikeout ratings for both pitchers and batters...increasing home runs ratings prior to 1920...decreasing home run ratings after 1990...decreasing strikeout ratings after 1990...raising the fielding percentages for pre-1950 players...and lowering batting averages for the hit happy 1930s.

Anyone have any ideas about a good solution?

NATIONAL LEAGUE

NL PENNANT RACE TIGHTENS...CUBS BLANKED BY NY'S HUBBELL...CARDS HOLD OFF PIRATES LATE RALLY...CHICAGO IS TWO GAMES AHEAD OF ST. LOUIS...10 GAMES TO GO

The first place Chicago Cubs ran in a buzzsaw at the Polo Grounds. Carl Hubbell (14-14 3.97) bewildered them 3-1, permitting only five singles, striking out seven and walking no one in an almost perfect performance...Mel Ott's (.261) two-run belt in the first off losing pitcher Mordecai Brown (19-7 2.56) was all the runs Hubbell needed...in a good outing Brown gave up only five hits and two earned runs, yet failed to get his 20th victory.

For the second straight game the second place Cardinals almost squandered a big ninth-inning lead, but managed to hold on in a narrow 6-5 victory over the last place Pittsburgh Pirates...Matt Morris (16-8 3.39) got credit for the win, but was roughed up in the four-run ninth...Harvey Haddix (6-8 4.30) struggled, too, but got his 22nd save, despite allowing two runs...Johnny Mize (.278) hit his 25th homer and had two hits and three RBIs...Bucs Ralph Kiner (.245), Gus Suhr (.243) and Honus Wagner (.244) rapped fourbaggers.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

BABE RUTH BOMBS ANOTHER...GETS 47TH HR

St. Louis got the 5-1 win, but Babe Ruth got his 47th home run of the season to add to his new Alltime Allstar Association mark... The old mark of 45 was set in 1903 by Chicago's Turkey Stearnes...Urban Shocker (2-3 3.80) corralled the Bronx Bombers on a five-hitter...he struck out nine and walked two...Wally Judnich (.267) walloped a three-run blast for the Browns...Herb Pennock (15-10 3.25) suffered the loss, giving up all five runs in seven innings...New York has clinched the AL pennant and is headed for the World Series...they are 11 games in front of Washington.

The second place Senators trailed Cleveland 4-1 six innings, but slammed loser Herb Score (12-14 3.23) for four runs in the seventh to take the lead 5-4...Heinie Manush's (.350) two-run triple was the crucial blow...rookie Alvin Crowder (13-6 3.47) labored, but got the victory...he yielded eleven hits in eight innings of work...reliever Rick Aguilera (8-4 4.31) gave up a ninth-inning homer to Willie Wells (.274), but still came away with his 30th save, tops in both leagues.

CHICUBS INCREASE NL LEAD TO 3 OVER ST. LOUIS...REULBACH STOPPED GIANTS...CARDS FOLD IN EXTRA INNINGS TO LAST PLACE PITTSBURGH

The first place Cubs slammed New York 6-1 with home runs by Cool Papa Bell (.317), Ernie Banks (.239) and Hack Wilson (.241)...Ed Reulbach (13-10 3.45) hurled a nifty four-hitter, totaling seven Ks and no walks...it was an important win for Chicago as they moved three games in front of the second place Redbirds...loser Juan Marichal (8-6 4.49) left early, giving up five runs in three innings.

St. Louis took a brief 7-6 lead in the top of the eleventh against the Pirates, but then reliever Bob Gibson blew it...Pittsburgh tallied twice in the bottom half of the inning to edge the Cards 8-7...Bill Mazeroski (.223) tied it with a fourbagger, then a walk, sacrifice bunt and an RBI single by Honus Wagner (.245) won it...St. Louis manager, Tony Larussa, is still looking for a finisher...He has given the job to Dizzy Dean in an effort to keep the Cards in the race...recently, neither Gibson, nor Harvey Haddix have been able to close out games...time is running out on St. Louis...there are only nine games left with the season ending in one week from this Sunday.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

IN MEANINGLESS GAMES AL CHAMPION YANKS FALL TO ST. LOUIS BROWNS AND SENATORS SUCCUMB TO CLEVELAND

Hoyt Wilhelm's (13-11 3.68) knuckleball fluttered by the Yankees 8-2, who managed only six hits...home runs in the fifth inning, a three-run shot by the Browns George Sisler (.280) and a two-run blast by Cal Ripken (.236) waylaid losing pitcher, Jack Chesbro (11-6 3.98)...New York is still 11 games ahead of Washington.

The second place Senators fell 8-6 to the Cleveland Indians...the Tribe hit three homers and bashed out fourteen hits...Rocky Colavito (.230), Victor Martinez (.253) and winning pitcher Sonny Siebert (.147) all homered...Siebert (10-6 4.66) picked up the victory with late inning help from Doug Jones (13-4 2.94), who got his 23rd save...Siebert permitted five hits, four earned runs in seven innings with seven strikeouts and two walks...Rod Carew (.277) clubbed a home run for Washington.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CARDS CHOP CUBS LEAD BACK TO TWO GAMES...GIANTS BEATS CUBS TWICE...ST. LOUIS SPLIT WITH PITTSBURGH...CHICAGO MAGIC NUMBER IS SIX

The National League leader, the Chicago Cubs got a double dose of defeat at the hands of the fourth place New York Giants, dropping the opener 7-4 and the nightcap 5-1...the twin loss cut their lead to just two games over the second place Cardinals...any combination of Chicago wins and St. Louis losses that total six will give the pennant to the Cubs. There are seven games to play.

Tom Haller's (.255) three-run smash in the eighth sent Bill Lee (13-12 3.81) down to defeat in the first game...Christy Mathewson (17-10 2.96) was the winning pitcher with a little ninth inning help from Robb Nen (2-0 1.83), who got the last two outs.

Jess Tesreau (9-9 3.96) tossed a brilliant three-hitter in the nightcap...except for Cool Papa Bell's (.317) eighth-inning homer, he totally shut down the tough Bruin batters...Tesreau whiffed four and walked three...center fielder Ross Youngs (.281) topped the Giants with two RBIs...rookie Guy Bush (5-9 3.65) was the losing pitcher, yielding nine hits and four earned runs in seven plus innings.

The Redbirds split one-run games with the cellar-dwelling Pirates, winning 2-1 behind lefty John Tudor (14-11 4.16) in the opening contest, but falling 6-5 in eleven innings in game two...Tudor stopped the Bucs cold on four hits, while striking out six and walking none in a superb outing...Ralph Kiner's (.244) solo home run was the only run allowed...Rogers Hornsby's (.286) two-run double in the third inning was enough to beat the luckless Deacon Phillippe (8-19 3.40), who gave up seven hits and fanned nine in another good, but losing effort.

In game two, St. Louis couldn't hold a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth...the Cards bullpen blew another one...Dizzy Dean and Satchel Paige couldn't finish off the last place Pirates, while the Bucs bullpen was great...it held St. Louis scoreless from the fifth inning on...Ralph Kiner's (.248) salvo off starter Larry Jackson cut it to 5-4 in the eighth...then Koji Yamamoto's (.211) double off Dean tied it up in the ninth...and Bill Mazeroski's (.218) homer off Paige won it in the eleventh...the Redbirds lost a golden opportunity to close within one game of the Cubs...Roy Face (6-11 5.10) retired St. Louis in order in the last two frames to get the victory.

The third place Dodgers split a pair with the fifth place Philadelphia Phillies and picked up a game on Chicago, trailing by four games. In the first game, Pete Alexander (15-7 3.07) got the best of Sandy Koufax (19-10 2.29)...he hurled the Phils to a 4-2 triumph...in eight innings Alexander allowed only six hits and two runs...Jack Baldschun pitched a scoreless ninth for the save...Koufax, the Brooklyn ace, went the route, striking out seven and surrendering ten hits...Scott Rolen's (.255) pinch-hit two-run homer in the ninth won it for Philadelphia.

Brooklyn's Mike Piazza (.277) won the second game 5-4 with a two-run shot in the eighth to beat Robin Roberts (4-6 3.32)...Claude Osteen (5-1 3.25) was the winner with ninth-inning help form Eric Gagne (6-2 4.64)...it was Gagne's 26th save, tops in the National League...Jimmy Rollins (.271) and Gavvy Cravath (.271) homered for Philadelphia.

It back-to-back doubleheaders tomorrow in both leagues. On Labor Day, first place Chicago opens up a four-game series at Wrigley Field with the third place Dodgers and second place St. Louis hosts the sixth place Boston Braves in a four-game set.

Ferguson Jenkins (13-11 4.04) and rookie Orval Overall (10-2 3.95) are scheduled to pitch for Chicago against Brooklyn's Don Drysdale (13-14 3.76) and Fernando Valenzuela (0-1 3.45)...Valenzuela is normally a middle reliever, but Manager Tommy Lasorda has a tired staff and none of the regular rotation is available for the second game in this important twinbill.

The second place St. Louis Cardinals have the same problem. Manager Tony Larussa will send Harry Brecheen (15-5 3.14) in the first game against Boston's John Smoltz (11-14 3.64). But in the nightcap, he will have to pull Bob Gibson (4-5 5.53) in from the bullpen to start against Phil Niekro (2-10 5.11) of the Braves.

Fortunately Tuesday is an off day for both leagues.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

It's all over in the American League and the New York Yankees, with an eleven-game lead, will now finish out the season and get ready for the World Series. The Bronx Bombers divided a doubleheader with the seven place St. Louis Browns. The Browns took the opener as Mike Mussina (11-12 3.61) throttled the AL champs 7-1 on four hits ...he whiffed seven and walked only two in outpitching twenty-game winner, Whitey Ford (21-7 2.43)...Ford was ripped for fourteen hits in eight innings and was knocked out in the four-run ninth...Vern Stephens (.265) paced the Browns with a double, home run and four RBIs...Ken Williams (.284) hammered two doubles and pushed across a pair of runs.

The Yanks rebounded and got revenge in the nightcap, slamming St. Louis 11-1 behind the pitching of Lefty Gomez...Joe Gordon (.233) led the charge with four hits and two RBIs...Joe DiMaggio (.299) was 3-5 and knocked in one run...Gomez (20-5 2.88) gave New York another twenty-game winner with a strong twelve-strikeout performance...Dave McNally (3-6 3.27) was the loser.

The second place Washington Senators split with the third place Cleveland Indians...Addie Joss (11-13 3.83) blanked them 3-0 in game one, allowing only three hits...Camilo Pascual (13-14 3.70) pitched well in defeat...Nap Lajoie (.309) had the only homer in the game...Tris Speaker (.263) went 4-5.

In game two, it was the Senators winning 5-4 behind Frank Viola (13-9 3.55) and Rick Aguilera (8-4 4.26)...Aguilera garnered his record-setting 31st save...a sixth-inning two-run double by Muddy Ruel (.220) put Washington ahead to stay...rookie Wes Farrell (6-5 3.69) was shackled with the loss.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

BOTH CUBS AND CARDS SPLIT...CHICAGO STILL TWO GAMES UP IN NL...MAGIC NUMBER DROPS TO FOUR

In the first game of the twinbill Chicub 6'5" hurler, Ferguson Jenkins (14-11 3.86), stood mighty tall on the mound and dominated the third place Brooklyn Dodgers 7-0, limiting them to six singles with eight strikeouts and two walks...Billy Herman (.314) was the hitting star with two hits, a double and triple, and three RBIs...Hank Sauer (.260) added two more RBIs with a double...loser Don Drysdale (13-15 3.87) was driven from the mound after five innings, giving up five runs.

In game two, little used lefty, Fernando Valenzuela (1-1 3.47) put a small kink in the Chicago pennant hopes with a solid 7-2 outing...starting for only the second time this season, he restricted the Cubs to six hits, while fanning five and walking two in a fine performance...Jackie Robinson (.306) doubled, homered and drove in three runs to lead the Brooklyn hit parade...Cristobel Torriente (.290) added three hits and two RBIs to send rookie Orval Overall (10-3 4.19) to only his third defeat.

St. Louis ace, Harry Brecheen (16-5 3.10), was again tough in the clutch and gave the Redbirds a big 6-4 victory over Boston in the first game...he shut out the Braves on four hits through seven innings 6-0, before weakening in the last two frames and giving up four runs, only two of them earned...Dizzy Dean (5-4 4.09) got the last out to get his second save this year...John Smoltz (11-15 3.84) lost it for Boston, being driven out by six runs in less than three innings...Stan Musial (.304) delivered two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinal cause...Ted Simmons (.303) and Dobie Moore (.286) each chipped in two RBIs and two hits.

In part two of the twinbill, St. Louis was looking good as they jumped off to a 6-2 lead after five, aided by thirteen walks by wild knuckleballer, Phil Niekro...but the roof caved in on starter Bob Gibson and reliever Satchel Paige, who were battered for seven runs in the sixth...Tom Glavine (7-7 4.45), not only got the win with three scoreless innings of relief, but also tagged a game-winning double in the decisive sixth inning...Marcus Giles (.288) followed with a two-run insurance home run to seal the verdict...Cardinals Johnny Mize (.278) and Rogers Hornsby (.286) drove in three and two runs respectivly.

The Redbird collapse cost them a chance to move to within a game of the National League top spot...they still trail by two games with only five to play...any combination of Chicago wins and St. Louis losses that total four will give the crown to the Cubs.

Chicago's manager, Charlie Grimm, will send Mordecai Brown (19-10 2.56) and Ed Reulbach (13-10 3.45) to the mound in the last two games of the Dodger series...Tommy Lasorda has indicated he will send his best against the Cubs, Sandy Koufax (19-7 2.29) and Dazzy Vance (14-11 2.97).

St. Louis will face the best the Braves have to offer, Warren Spahn (12-15 4.02) and Greg Maddux (11-9 3.67) in the final two games of that series...Tony Larussa will have Matt Morris (16-8 3.39) and John Tudor (14-11 4.16) on the hill for the Cards.

AL CHAMPS REST REGULARS...WHITE SOX SWEEP NEW YORK

With an eleven-game lead going into the day's action, manager Casey Stengel of the Yanks gave most of the regulars a day off, played a lot scrubs and used second line pitching...this made it easier for the Chicago White Sox to take both ends of the Labor Day doubleheader, 6-5 and 7-3...Ed Walsh (14-12 3.22) and Bobby Thigpen (5-6 3.54) combined for the first game win...Thigpen got the victory, compliments of a three-run ninth and Joe Jackson's (.298) game-winning two-run two bagger with two outs...Bob Turley (3-5 6.12) was pinned with the loss.

In the nightcap Juan Pizarro (2-4 3.27) tossed a sparkling three-hitter to sweep New York...he fanned six and walked four...Frank Thomas (.220) and Louis Santop (.276) slugged roundtrippers for the Pale Hose...Dave Winfield (.223) and Babe Ruth (.306) pounded fourbaggers for the Yanks...it was Ruth 48th of the season, extending his new AAA home run mark for a single season...Vic Raschi (10-12 4.20) suffered the defeat, yielding six runs in four innings.

It wasn't a good day for the second place Washington Senators, either...they lost both games to the A's...in the opener Philadelphia's Rube Waddell (12-2 2.69) won his tenth successive game by blanking the Senators 5-0 on a five-hitter.

In game two, it was a slugfest...the Athletics crushed four homers and squeezed out a 10-9 win...Al Simmons (.274), Jimmie Foxx (.241), Bing Miller (.305) and Miguel Tejada (.198) all collected one...five runs in the last of the ninth gave the A's the triumph...Tejada walloped a three-run walkoff homer to decide the contest...Harmon Killebrew (.212) had a career day with two homers and seven RBIs in defeat.

CUBS MAGIC NUMBER DIPS TO THREE...BOTH CHICAGO AND CARDS WIN

After a much needed day off, Chicago went back to the business at hand and shaved their magic number to three by staging a comeback rally to beat third place Brooklyn 7-6...a five-run seventh captured the win...middle reliever Bob Rush (2-2 4.55) held the Dodgers to two hits and a single run in five innings of relief for the win...Mordecai Brown (19-7 2.68) failed a third time to get his 20th victory...he was chased in the second after giving up five runs...Bruce Sutter nailed down his 21st save by tossing two scoreless frames...Turkey Stearnes (.332), who is having a MVP and Triple Crown season, drilled a solo shot in the sixth to close it to 6-2, then won it with a three-run clout in the seventh...he now has 132 RBIs and 45 homers.

The second place St. Louis Cardinals kept pace with a 5-3 triumph over the Boston Braves and still trail by two games with only four to play...any combination of three Cub wins or Redbird losses will give the National League title to Chicago...Matt Morris (17-8 3.38) outpitched Warren Spahn (12-16 4.11), permitting seven hits and three runs in eight innings...Dizzy Dean (5-4 4.04) pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save...Stan Musial (.305) and Red Schoendienst (.283) each knocked in a pair of scores for St. Louis...Musial reached the 100 RBI mark for the season...Marcus Giles (.294), a late season call up, tripled and homered for the Braves.

YANKEES ARE GETTING READY FOR THE WORLD SERIES

The pennant-winning NY Yankees dropped their third game in a row, succumbing to Billy Pierce and the Chicago White Sox 6-4 in ten innings...Pierce went nine innings and left trailing 4-2, yielding only one earned run...closer Bobby Thigpen registered the win with a scoreless tenth frame...Louis Santop's (.278) two-run smash pinned the loss on Dave Righetti (0-2 4.44)...It was Santop's 21st fourbagger and his three RBIs gave him 100 this year...Manager Casey Stengel got some bad news, when his starting pitcher, Herb Pennock (15-10 3.24), pulled a ligament in his elbow and had to leave the game in the sixth with a 4-2 edge...He will miss about a week and may not be ready for the World Series...Babe Ruth (.306) banged #49 for the Yanks.

The second place Senators suffered their third consecutive defeat...this time Ed Rommel of the Philadelphia A's spun an exceptional three-hit 1-0 shutout...rookie Alvin Crowder (13-7 3.38) was almost as good, allowing only five hits...Shigeo Nagashima (.277) drove in the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

The Athletics pulled into a three-way tie for third place with the Indians and Red Sox in the American League with the victory...They all trail by sixteen games.

The Red Sox blanked the Browns 4-0 on a superlative two-hit masterpiece by Roger Clemens (13-13 4.26), who fanned nine and walked none.

Detroit outslugged Cleveland 12-10...the Tribe lost Herb Score (12-14 3.22) for the rest of the season with a severe back injury...he should be fine within a month...Score departed in the fourth after being whacked for three hits and five runs, only one earned.
