I am thinking of adding one more player to each roster and make it a Negro star...giving the worst teams the earliest picks.
It will give me one more player for pinchhitting and pinchrunning...4 extra position players is not enough. Last edited by Eugene Church; 12-11-2004 at 08:53 AM. |

At the end of the day in American League play, New York (8-5) is still a half game ahead of the pack. Baltimore, Philadelphia and Cleveland now share second place in the standings, all at 7 and 5. But all this could change tomorrow as all the contenders will wrap up with the rubber game of their series. The Yanks host the Orioles at Yankee Stadium and the A's go up against the Tribe at Shibe. In today's action the Orioles got a well pitched game from Dave McNally (1-0) as he whipped the Yankees 5 to 3. Baltimore opened with an offensive flurry taking advantage of loser Lefty Gomez's (0-1) lack of control in the first inning to score all five of their runs, highlighted by Eddie Murray's two-run double. Tom Tresh hit one out of the park for New York. The Athletics' Catfish Hunter (1-0) outdueled Early Wynn and the Cleveland Indians in a pitchers' battle 3 to 1 at Shibe Park. Hunter scattered 10 hits in 8 innings. Little Bobby Shantz came on in the 9th and picked up the save. Jimmy Dykes drove in 2 runs with 2 hits for the A's. Nap Lajoie was 3 for 4 in a losing effort. The loss cost the Tribe a chance to move past New York for the league lead. Wilbur Wood's flutterball was really dancing at Comiskey Park as Chicago blanked Boston on 7 hits in the 2-0 shutout. The Big Hurt, Frank Thomas, singled in the only runs of the game in the 3rd inning. The White Sox evened their record at 6 and 6, dropping the Red Sox to 4 and 8. The Washington Nationals (4-9) literally dropped the the ball and the ballgame to Detroit (6-6). The Nats committed a major league record 5 errors, 4 of them by outfielders. Sam Rice committed 2 of them and Bill Dailey walked a mlb record 11 and yet they were still in the game until the 10th inning, when they finally succumbed 8 to 5. Hank Greenberg doubled in the winning runs. Sam Crawford led the Tiger attack with 3 hits. Harry Coveleski pitched 2 scoreless frames in relief of starter Frank Lary and got the victory. Dutch Leonard was the loser. In the National League, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are co-leaders at 8 and 4, followed closely by 7 and 5 Atlanta and and 6 and 6 New York. Cincinnati will close out it 3 game series tomorrow against St. Louis at home, Pittsburgh plays on the road against Chicago in Wrigley Field and Atlanta will try to salvage one of the games against Philadelphia at Muncipal Stadium. At Crosley Field the St. Louis Redbirds (5-7) roughed up the Redlegs 12 to 3 as they ripped Cincy's pitching for 19 hits, with Hornsby leading the way with 4 hits, Musial had 3 with 3 rbi's and Chick Hafey 3 hits, 3 runs, 4 rbi's and and home run. Mort Cooper (3-0) went the full 9 innings for the winners. Pete Donahue (2-1) got his initial loss this season. Tony Perez paced Cincinnati with 3 base knocks including a four-base blast. Atlanta (7-5) will be very happy to see the Phillies (6-7) leave town. Philadelphia captured their 6th in a row behind the left hand slants of Curt Simmons (1-0), who held the Braves in check with 2 runs and 9 hits. Chuck Klein was the hitting hero, totalling 3 hits and 2 rbi's. Lou Burdette (0-2) lost it for Atlanta, tapped for 6 runs in 6 innings. Iron Man McGinnity (1-2) and New York (6-6) mowed down the Dodger (6-7) hitters on a 6 hitter 6 to 3 to drop them below .500 for the year. Mel Ott clobbered a Don Sutton (2-1) fastball out of the park for a 3-run gamewinner in the 5th inning. Willie Mays also took the easy stroll around the bases with a four bagger. Gil Hodges hit homer #4 and Duke Snider #3 for the Bums. In the Windy City, Ray Kremer (1-0) of the Pirates (8-4) was on top of his game, blanking the Cubs (3-9) on a 5 hitter and whiffing 7. Paul Waner and Bill Mazeroski totalled 3 basehits each and Big Poison delivered 2 runs batted in. Charlie Root (0-3) went the distance in defeat for the Cubs in a credible outing. Go back to a previous page and you will see the first week's stats and standings. I am going to try to get a website set up so I don't have to type all of the leagues standings and stats. I will do it, if it is not too expensive. I am totally ignorant of things of that nature, but will soon try to get some idea of the cost. Maybe Henry, JoeRock or some of those will give me some info about getting one. |

In the Junior Circuit today, New York (9-5) nipped Baltimore (7-6) to remain atop of the league standings. The Athletics (8-5) moved up to sole possession of second place with a one-run win over the Indians (7-6). Detroit (7-6) and Chicago (7-6) were also winners and tied for third place in the hotly-contested race. The Yanks' Herb Pennock (2-1) gave up 10 hits, but he was tough with men on base, holding the Orioles scoreless in the last seven innings in a tight 4-3 decision. Derek Jeter's two bagger was the crucial blow, driving in the winning run in the bottom of the 6th. In the top of the ninth, Joe DiMaggio went back to the warning track in center field with 2 runners on to spear George Sisler's deep drive to save the game. Jim Palmer (0-3) went 6 innings in defeat for Baltimore. Earl Combs had 3 hits for New York and kicked his average up to .452. McManus, Severeid and Jacobson each had 2 hits for the Birds. Reggie Jackson of the A's came through with a clutch 2-run two bagger in the top of the sixth inning to beat loser Bob Lemon (1-1) and the Cleveland Indians 7 to 6. Winner Ed Rommel (2-1) went the first 6 innings and surrendered 4 runs and Bobby Shantz went the final three and was awarded his second save. The Tribe outhit Philadelphia 13 to 7, but couldn't deliver at the right time. Averill, Doby and Romano hit roundtrippers for the Indians. Chicago's Eddie Collins, one of the hottest hitter in the league at .467, belted a double off the wall and gave the Pale Hose an exciting 7-6 bottom of the ninth come-from-behind victory over Boston, who had just taken a one run lead in the top half of the inning. Ed Cicotte (3-1), normally a starter, was pressed into service and came on in relief to get the win. However, he would have been the loser except for Collins' heroics. Gary Peters pitched a strong 7 innings before bowing out for a pinchhitter. He held the Red Sox to just 5 hits and 2 runs. Luis Tiant (0-1) was the losing pitcher. Frank Thomas smashed his 4th home run of the year for the White Sox, while Jim Rice rapped his 3rd four bagger and Johnny Pesky punched out 3 hits for the Beantowners. Hank Greenberg hiked his batting average up to a whopping .479 with 4 hits today in Detroit's 9-4 romp over the struggling Washington Nationals. He collected homer #4 and drove in 3 runs, giving him 18 for the season, tops in the Majors. Jack Morris (1-0) had it when it counted and got the complete game win. Frank Viola (0-3) had another bad start and was dealt the loss. In today's contests, Pittsburgh (9-4), the top team in the National, won their fourth consecutive game, the Reds (8-5) got shelled by the Cardinals for the second day in a row, New York (7-6) swept their crosstown rivals, the Dodgers (6-8) and the rebounding Phillies (7-7) have surprisingly won their last 5, with the Braves their latest victims. The Pirates' Roy Face (1-0), normally in the bullpen, got a surprise start today and gave their overworked pitching staff a good day of rest as he chucked a complete game victory 8-3 over the celler-dwelling Chicago Cubs (3-10). He shut them out until a 3 run outburst in the ninth and had a 6 hitter with 5 k's and 6 walks. Hard luck Ferguson Jenkins (1-2) took the loss despite allowing only 2 earned runs. Arky Vaughan and Jason Kendall provided the offense, each with a home run and 3 rbi's among the Bucs' 14 hits. It was the Cubbies third straight loss. St. Louis (6-7) lefthander, Harry "The Cat" Brecheen (1-2) breezed through the Cincinnati Reds (8-5) with a steady 6 hit performance and backed up by his teammates 14 hit support made it an easy 10 to 3 margin. The Redbirds took the series two games to one, scoring double digits in the last two encounters. Brecheen even led the offense with 2 hits and 3 rbi's. Cincinnati's Jose Rijo (0-1) was blasted out in the second frame and sustained the loss. Over at the Polo Grounds, the Giants (7-6) slipped by their arch enemies, Brooklyn, 5 to 3 to sweep the three-game series. Gaylord Perry had control problems, walking 9 batters, but he was quite stingy with the hits, giving up only 4 for the day, two of them homers by Gary Sheffield and Pee Wee Reese. He fanned 7, but due to wildness, Robb Nen had to bail him out in the ninth to save it for him. The Bums' righthander, Bob Welch got the loss. Brooklyn (6-8) has now suffered losses in their last 5 games. And at County Stadium, Philadelphia (7-7) rolled to their 5th victory in a row with some good relief work over the last 5 innings by Jack Baldschun, Big Jim Konstanty and Tug McGraw. They held the Braves (7-6) in check and led the way to a comeback 7-5 win. Atlanta's Johnny Sain had blanked them for 5 innings before being hit hard for 4 runs in the top of the sixth. Richie Ashburn's base-clearing double for the Phils was the big blow. Larry Bowa, who had 3 hits, got the game-winning rbi single in the ninth against loser John Smoltz (0-2). Konstanty (1-1) went 3 innings for the win and Tug McGraw pitched a scoreless ninth for the save. Wally Berger topped the Braves with 3 hits, 2 rbi's and hammered his first homer of the year. EC, the leader boards are great. I just meant, like if I want to check on a guy to see how he's doing who may not be on the leader boards. I can see where it could be too much if you got a lot of requests, but it's fun to see how your favorit guy is doing, you know? Great stuff though!

I think in the first 10-15 years the Braves will do well with the combination of "Spahn, Sain and pray for rain" era with Mathews, Aaron and Burdette...the bunch that whipped the Yankees several times in the World Series combined with the 90's bunch of Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine and the Jones Boys...plus Wally Berger from the 30's. After that the bad bunch of Braves will kick in. |

There is a new leader in the American League. Philadelphia beat the White Sox, while the Yankees were losing to the tough Detroit Tigers. The A's are up by a half game. Philadelphia (9-5) took over first place as Little Bert Campaneris supplied the power with 3 hits, including a triple and 3 rbi's in a 9-7 victory over the White Sox (7-7) in Comiskey Park. Miguel Tejada added a perfect 4 for 4 day and 3 runs scored and Rickey Henderson had 2 hits, 2 runs and an opening inning leadoff homer. The A's outhit Chicago 14 to 12 in the opener of a 3-game series. Chief Bender (1-0) was hit hard for 7 runs in 7+ innings. Rollie Fingers nailed down the save with a scoreless ninth. Billy Pierce (0-2) lasted only 3 innings and chalked up the loss. Eddie Collins was the Chicago leader going 3 for 4 and boosting his American League leading average to .490. Meanwhile on a wet, windy and cold day in Detroit (8-6), the Tigers tamed the Yankees 10 to 6 and knocked them of of first place, aided by 3 errors by the New Yorkers (9-6). Sam Crawford led an array of fine hitters withn 3 hits and 2 rbi's. The Bronx Bombers countered with 10 hits and homers by Babe Ruth (3) and Derek Jeter (3). Jeter drove in a game high 4 runs. Virgil Trucks (1-0) picked up the win with 4 scoreless in relief of starter Jim Bunning, who was raked for 6 runs in 4+ innings. Mel Stottlemyre (1-1) was hung with the loss. It was the opener of a four game series. It was an old-fashioned pitchers' duel between the Indians (8-6) and the Red Sox (4-10) in Boston as Addie Joss outpitched Pedro Martinez 2 to 1. Joss (2-1) only gave up 4 hits, walked none and struckout 3, while Pedro allowed just 3 hits, blitzed 7 and walked 2. Dick Radatz added a scoreless ninth. Larry Doby (3) lifted on into the stands in the fourth. He also scored the winning run in the seventh, when the Bosox failed to convert a twin killing. Nomar Garciappara (3) parked one out of Fenway in the 9th. Boston dropped to last place in the league. At home in Washington, Goose Goslin doubled and scored on a single by Pete Runnels and tied the score in the bottom of the ninth and then slapped a game-winning single an inning later off Baltimore's Hoyt Wilhelm (1-1). The final score was 4-3. The Nationals (5-10) squeaked by the Orioles (7-7) and snapped an eight-game losing skein. Starters Ned Garver and Camilo Pascual were outstanding, but neither were around for the dramatic finish. Rick Aguilera (1-0) got the win with two shutout innings. Wilhelm (1-1) blew a save opportunity in the ninth and lost it in the tenth, giving up 5 hits in two innings. Goslin had 3 hits in all and boosted his batting average to .436 on the season. Pete Runnels is hitting .420 for the Nationals. George Sisler knotched 3 hits for the O's. In National League action, the Pittsburgh Pirates (10-4) held on to first place with some fine pitching from Sam Leever (1-2) and won a close one from St. Louis 4 to 3. Leever kept the Redbirds' big bats at bay until the ninth inning when they scored two runs and had the winning runs on base. Kent Tekulve came in and got the final out and a save. The Bucs slapped out 9 hits off loser Dizzy Dean (0-4), who worked the first 7 innings and gave up all of the runs. Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell contributed 2 hits and 2 rbi's, while the Cards' Stan "the Man" Musial inflated his average to .402 with 3 hits. St. Louis is in 6th place in the standings. The Cincinnati Reds (9-5) kept pace with the Pirates, just one game back, when Paul Derringer was almost flawless in a 4 hit 3-0 blanking of the last place Chicago Cubs (3-11), striking out 7, walking none and giving up no extra base hits. Loser Hippo Vaughan (0-1) went seven innings and was touched for all 3 runs and 7 hits in seven innings. Ed Roush had two hits and drove in 2 runs, Frank Robinson slammed 3 hits and Bret Boone added 2 for the victors. Juan Marichal and the New York Giants (8-6) snapped the Phils' 5 game winning streak with a 5-4 triumph. Marichal (2-0) stopped them on 8 hits, tired out in the ninth and needed Robb Nen to save the game. Barry Bonds hit his first four bagger of the year and drove in 2 runs in the Giants' 9 hit attack. Roger Bresnahan and Freddie Lindstrom also had two hits apiece. Chuck Klein was the Phillies only bright spot with 3 for 4, upping his average to .402 this season with a single, double and triple. Steve Carlton (1-2) was the losing pitcher. The Atlanta Braves (8-6) went on the warpath against the Brooklyn Dodgers (6-9) and beat them 7 to 1 behind another fine outing by Lefty Warren Spahn (3-0). He hurled a 5-hitter, striking out five batters and walking only two. Hank Aaron (1) and Andruw Jones (1) belted homers and had 2 rbi's. The Braves roughed up Dodger starter Sandy Koufax (2-2), ripping 9 hits and 6 runs off of him in 5 innings. Aaron topped the Braves with 3 hits and 3 others had 2 in their 11 hit total. An abbreviated schedule in Major League Baseball...only two games in each league. In the Junior Circuit, the New York Yankees (11-6) added a half game to their lead over idle second place Philadelphia (9-6) and Cleveland (9-6), who now trail by 1 game. I think this way is better....simply due to it will be a little easier on you. I think as you get later in the season and the races for the pennants shape up...you'll probably do a write up of key games and key series. To attempt to do that for every team...for an entire season....thats too much for anyway to do.
I'm sure if we see a score we have questions on or want more details...you'll be happy to oblige us. Keep up the good work.... |

I certainly will give details about important games and series...and cover the World Series inning by inninng. Maybe by then I will have it on a website. |

I apologize for the poor and sloppy appearance on this post...I hope you don't get seasick reading it...but it is the best I can do. Maybe soon I can get a website to overcome this problem.

Sunday, April 27, 1901
It was a doubleheader Sunday in the Major Leagues and the Cleveland Indians are now the top team in the American League and Pittsburgh and Cincinnati are tied for first in the National League. The Indians' Bob Feller (2-1 3.16) and Early Wynn (2-1 2.18) gave the cellar dwelling Red Sox (4-13) a double dose of good pitching and led them to a sweep, 4-2 and 9-2. Mel Parnell (0-2 12.19) and George Ruth (1-2 5.55) went down in defeat. Lajoie, Colavito, Speaker and Averill were the hitting stars for Cleveland (11-6). Colavito (2) and Boudreau (1) homered in the nightcap for the Tribe, who moved percentage points ahead of the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers (12-7) could only split with the tough sixth place Detroit Tigers (9-9), dropping the opener 6 to 1 as Virgil "Fire" Trucks (2-0 1.65) stopped them on a 5 hitter. Harry Heilmann and George Kell had 3 and 2 hits respectively. Spud Chandler (2-1 3.75) took the loss. But the New Yorkers came back to eke out a 3-2 victory in the second game on Lou Gehrig's (4) 2 run homer in the 8th. Herb Pennock (3-1 4.17) got the win with help from Mariano Rivera (1-0/2 Saves 0.00). Rivera has yet to give up a run in 12 innings of relief this year. Jack Morris (1-1 5.71) pitched well in defeat. Third place Philadelphia (10-7) divided a twinbill with the fifth place White Sox (9-8), winning the first game 6-5 in a squeaker with Vida Blue (1-0 3.60), the winner in relief. Bobby Shantz (0-0 2.25) chalked up his 3rd save and Gary Peters (0-1 3.60) lost it in relief. Joe Jackson of the Sox had the only roundtripper of the day. Ed Cicotte (4-1 2.41) outpitched Ed Plank (3-1 3.00) for the second game 4-1 victory. Fourth place Baltimore (10-8) and seventh place Washington (6-13) hurlers were tough and stingy. The Nats copped the opener 3 to 1 with Frank Viola (1-3 6.58) the winner, backed up by Rick Aguilera (0-0/1 Save 0.00). Reliever Hoyt Wilhelm (2-2/3 Saves 2.40) suffered the loss. Killer Killebrew (3) homered for the Nationals. The Birds' Mike Mussina (3-0 2.12) outdueled Jim Perry (0-2 7.80) in the second game 2 to 1 to gain the split. Cal Ripken (3) homered in each game. Over in the National League, Cincinnati took two close ones from last place Chicago, 3-2 and 5-3. Pete Donahue (3-1 3.31) and Jim Maloney (2-0 2.79) held down the Cubbies to move into a first place tie with Pittsburgh. Maloney tied the MLB record with 10 K's. Frank Robinson (.412) continued his torrid hitting with 6 hits and 4 rbi's in the doubleheader. Ed Reulbach (2-2 2.97) and Charlie Root (0-4 4.40) deserved better, but got little run support and suffered the losses. The Pirates (12-5) with a .310 team batting average, pounded St. Louis (7-10) for 13 hits in the first game and an 8 to 4 triumph as everybody in the lineup but Honus Wagner got at least one hit. Babe Adams (3-0 2.33) garnered the first game win with Mort Cooper (3-1 4.00) taking the loss. Hornsby (2) homered for the Redbirds. John Tudor (1-0 3.18) and Vic Willis (1-1 3.60) tangled in the nightcap and the Cardinal lefty came away with a 4-3 victory. Red Schoendiesnt (1) slammed the only fourbagger of the day for St. Louis. The third place Giants (11-7) took a pair of one run thrillers from the fifth place Phils, 2 to 1 and 5 to 4. Both winner, Joe McGinnity (2-2 3.09) and loser, Robin Roberts (1-2 6.29) were splendid in the first game. Roberts tied a Major League record with 10 strikeouts. Willie Mays (2) hammered a fourth inning homer for the eventual game winner. Johnny Antonelli (2-0 4.24) and Robb Nen (0-1/3 Saves 4.05) teamed up to complete the sweep in the second game. Philadelphia's (8-11) Chuck Klein and Andy Seminick sent a couple out of the park in the nightcap. Starter Jack Baldschun (0-1 6.00) had a rough day and sustained the loss. In Atlanta, the fourth place Braves (10-8) beat the fifth place Dodgers (8-11) behind Lou Burdette's (1-2 4.25) seven hit pitching 6 to 1. Burleigh Grimes (1-2 6.23) got the first game defeat but pitched well. Johnny Logan's two-run baseloaded double in the second supplied enough for the win. Brooklyn came back in the second game 9 to 6 to gain a split with Don Sutton (3-1 4.31) picking up the victory with saving help from Big Don Newcombe (0-1/1 Save 1.17). The Bums' Mike Piazza led the way offensively with 3 hits, 4 rbi's and a homer (1) with Jackie Robinson (.372) getting his 3rd of the year. The Atlanta third sacker, Eddie Mathews slugged his 4th out of the park. Last edited by Eugene Church; 12-14-2004 at 01:06 AM. |
