Pittsburgh (0-0) at Arizona (0-0) Series ![]() Game 1: See Article. Game 2: The young right hander, Brandon Webb, got the start for the Diamond Backs. The Pirates' leadoff hitter Tike Redman started off hot hitting a double off the wall to left. We got the next two outs but a Daryle Ward bloop single put the Pirates on the board 1-0 after a half inning of play. In the bottom half of the inning we were quickly shut down by left hander Dave Williams. Jose Castillo led off the second with a solo homerun and the Boo Birds came out. In the third inning Webb loaded the bases with 1 out but got out of the jam by pitching two ground ball outs. We scored our first run in the bottom of the third when Scott Hairston drove in Alex Cintron with a single. Webb settled down over the next three inning but in the sixth gave up a rbi double to Ty Wigginton. Doug Devore had some defensive gems, and we were able to get out of that inning without any further damage. In the seventh after a double from Craig Wilson, we decide to go to the bullpen and bring in Lance Cormier. He first batter, Daryle Ward, strikes out looking and Jason Bay popped up ending the scoring threat. Doug Devore led off the bottom of the seventh with a double. Next two batters grounded out and Devore moved to third. That brought up the pitcher Cormier. Andy Green came off the bench to pinch hit and . . . struck out swinging. In came pitcher Edgar Gonzalez to pitch the eighth. He got through the inning giving up one hit but no runs and it was still 3-1 going into the bottom of the eighth with six outs left. 1-2-3 we go down and Arizona fans start piling out of the stadium in disgust. Gonzalez stayed in for the ninth inning and got out of it without giving up any runs. With two outs we had guys on first and second due to walks. Up comes Robby Hammock. He singles to left field and drives in Green from second and all of a sudden the winning run is on first base. The left handed batting Ben Grieve came in to hit against the reliever Solomon Torres. Grieve grounded hard-to the short stop-and that ended the threat. Good bye series win. Game 3: Free Agent pick up will try to earn his money today by making his first start in a D'Back's uni against the Pirates. Arizona is aiming for this win to avoid being swept in their home opening series. The game quickly got out of hand in the first when Jason Bay hit a bases loaded single to drive in two runs with one out. The next batter, Jose Castillo, hit another single to load the bases up again for Ty Wigginton. Wigginton hit a sac fly which put the Pirates up 3-0. Benito Santiago flew out to end the inning. We went down easily in the first inning. Ortiz really settled down after that rocky first inning and after five it was still only 3-0 and he had 7 strikeouts. We pinched hit in the bottom of the sixth for Ortiz. Chad Tracy came into bat for him and grounded out. Again we went scoreless in the sixth and it was still 3-0. Jose Jimenez came into pitch in the seventh inning. Three up three down and our pitching continued to dominate their hitting. In the seventh we didn't score a run and the score remained at 3-0. Pitching again went through the inning without giving up a run. in the eighth we pinched hit for Jimenez with Royce Clayton. He grounded out the 0-1 pitch slowly to short stop. The next batter, Scott Hairston, laced a base hit and maybe the Diamond Backs could get something going. Luis Tererro was the next batter and struck out. Chad Durbin came in to pitch the ninth and tried to keep the game at 3-0. Not that it would matter. An rbi triple made the score even more impossible to manage at 4-0. Jack Wilson was brought in on a sac fly and the score was 5-0. Luis Gonzalez led of the ninth with a triple of his own and fans were heard asking, "Where was that earlier when it would have mattered?" Glaus drove him in with a sac fly and it was 5-1 with one out in the ninth. The next batter Shawn Green struck out swinging and Alex Cintron flew out to finalize the sweep by the Pirates. Game 1: Pittsburgh 6, Arizona 2 Game 2: Pittsburgh 3, Arizona 1 Game 3: Pittsburgh 5, Arizona 1 Arizona Player of the Series: Doug Devore (3-8, 3 doubles, 3 walks) |
