You'll have until Wednesday, William, so you'll be good to go.

Rough Bill is still on the ballot--I changed the rule, at least for now, and am leaving everyone on the ballot for the time being.

If at all possible, could you cut and past the bios to the new post? At least in the future, this would make things so much easier. Thanks!

Oops, I suppose I accidentally left a few guys off. Thanks for spotting that, John! I'll fix that right away. I also forgot to add a newly eligible player, Rube Ellis.

And, while I'm at it, I can copy/paste the bios for the other holdovers, too. It won't be much trouble at all.

So far, only three ballots have been cast for the 1927 Hall of Fame election. The balloting ends on Thursday, so please don't forget to vote!

Thanks for your ballot, William.

All the players who appeared on the first ballot will be on for a minimum of three years, through the 1928 election. After that, any player who hasn't been elected and who hasn't received a vote in one of the three elections will be dropped from the ballot.

Beginning in 1929, a player will need to keep receiving at least 5% of the vote each year to remain on the ballot.

One last request for Hall of Fame ballots: the 1927 election will end tomorrow night, so if you've been thinking of casting a ballot, please don't wait too long!

Thanks!

1927 Hall of Fame Voting: Results

Wow, when it rains, it pours! A deluge of last-minute ballots resulted in an even bigger turnout of Hall of Fame voters in 1927 than there was in 1926. Eleven ballots were submitted, which meant that nine votes were required for election to the Hall. This year, some voters did not use all ten slots on their ballot.

Here are the final tallies:

Nap Lajoie: 11
Mordecai Brown: 11
Roger Bresnahan: 9
Willie Keeler: 9
George Moriarty: 9

Bill Burns: 8
Buck Herzog: 8
Ginger Beaumont: 7
Frank Baker: 6
Jean Dubuc: 5
Jim Nealon: 3
Simon Nicholls: 3
Bill Carrigan: 2
Jack Coombs: 2
Charlie Johnson: 2
Bill Otey: 2
Roy Castleton: 1
Jack Chesbro: 1
Tommy Leach: 1
Lefty Leifield: 1
Clyde Milan: 1
George Mullin: 1

Congratulations to the five newest members of the Hall of Fame!

1928 Hall of Fame Ballot

Here is the 1928 Hall of Fame ballot. This is the final year of eligibility for any of the players who appeared on the first ballot in 1925 and have not yet received any votes. If they do not receive support in the 1928 election, they will be removed from the ballot. These players will be marked with an asterisk.

Players who have now been retired for three years and are eligible for election to the Hall for the first time will be highlighted in red.

The 1928 election will close on Sunday, April 10.

Thanks for participating!

PITCHERS:

BILL BURNS: 1908-1920

245-179, 2.82. MOP, 1909 and 1912. Seven-time All-Star. Won 27 games in a season twice; at least 20 six times. 49 shutouts. Like Brown, suffered career-ending arm injury while he still had something left.

ROY CASTLETON: 1907-1924
247-200, 3.48. Castleton toiled for Yankees and Dodgers teams that were usually mediocre, but ran off a string of nine consecutive seasons with at least 18 victories, including five 20-win campaigns. American League MOP, 1917 (23-12, 2.98). Five All-Star selections.

JACK CHESBRO: 1899-1912
240-158, 2.84. Five 20-win seasons, three after simulation began.

JACK COOMBS: 1906-1921
236-163, 3.21. Won 20 or more games five times; Fractured Skull and Ruptured Disc Back cost him that milestone in 2 other seasons. Eight All-Star appearances. MOP, 1911 (26-12, 2.99).

JEAN DUBUC: 1908-1922
255-194, 3.19. Won at least 20 games seven times. One of Cincinnati’s “Big Three” with Roy Hitt and Del Mason; won 2 Series and six pennants. MOP, 1913 (21-10, 2.03)

ROY HITT: 1907-1925
337-260, 3.45. Third-winningest pitcher in major league history, behind Young and Mathewson. 3312 strikeouts, 2nd all time, trailing only Walter Johnson. NL MOP 1912 (29-6, 2.93 ERA) and 1914 (26-8, 2.32 ERA). Seven All-Star selections. Six seasons with more than 20 wins. Spent entire career with Cincinnati Reds; won 2 Series and six pennants. Career record hurt by weakness of Reds teams of 1920s.

LEFTY LEIFIELD: 1905-1919
227-172, 2,95. Four-time 20-game winner, with a then-NL record 29 wins in 1911. Four-time All-Star. Won two WS rings with Pirates.

GEORGE MULLIN: 1902-1921
277-237, 3.18. Won at least 20 games five times as ace of outstanding Detroit teams of the teens. One World Series ring.

BILL OTEY: 1907-1924
198-143, 3.55. "Steamboat Bill" holds the National League record for strikeouts in a season (362, 1915). He whiffed at least 300 batters in three consecutive seasons, 1913-1915, and barely missed making it five straight--he rang up 298 Ks in 1912 and 299 in 1916. Fourth all-time in strikeouts, with 2,421. NL MOP, 1918 (25-14, 3.28). Won a WS ring with the '07 Pirates. Six All-Star appearances. Three 20-win seasons, but he also won 19 games four times; his Pirates teams were usually not big winners.

* JACK POWELL: 1897-1911
261-230, 3.18. Pitched for subpar Browns teams most of his career. Won 20 or more games six times, three in the simulation.

TEX PRUIETT: 1907-1919
I accidentally omitted Tex from the first two ballots.
204-139, 3.02. Five times a 20-game winner for the Red Sox dynasty of the 'teens. Clutch performer on six pennant winners and five World Series champion teams. Five All-Star appearances. ERA champion in 1908 (2.02).

* IRV YOUNG: 1905-1918
230-201, 3.15. Won 20 or more games five times as ace of lousy Braves teams. MOP, 1909 (25-10, 2.57). Four All-Star appearances.

POSITION PLAYERS:

FRANK BAKER: 1908-1923

.283-63-1011. 2084 hits. Four-time All-Star. Won 11 Slick Fielder awards at 3B, a total unmatched by any other player at any position. Home run champion in 1911 with 14.

GINGER BEAUMONT: 1899-1916
.325-49-1034. 2849 hits. MOB, 1914 (.377-1-87). Five All-Star appearances. Holds NL record for hits in a season with 222. Won World Series with Pirates in 1905.

On some of these guys, like Syd Smith, I'd really like to know where they stand compared to other catchers. I know this might be some work for you and it would not be necessary for all players. Smith has "only" 1500 hits, but Johnny Bench (in real life) had "only" 2,000. Just a thought.

I, too, have thought of that. If by any chance you've been Cato-ing the league, perhaps you could get the file hosted somewhere to give us the ability to make more informed choices?

I wish I'd done Catobase for this league. I didn't know about it when I started, unfortunately.

If I can find the time in the next couple days, I'd be glad to answer any questions about how some of these guys stand. I'll do Smith and the catchers, since he's the first one you mentioned, William.

I'm a little surprised Beaumont isn't in yet myself, Jestor. (I voted for him in 1926 and 1927 myself.)
