It's time to break out the Bud Breckenridge campaign, with a bio written by Jack McKinley, longtime Pirates beat writer from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Bud Breckenridge Center Field, Pittsburgh Pirates (1929-1949) Career Numbers: 2434 Hits 304 Doubles 164 Triples 180 Home Runs 1232 RBI 1580 R (21st All-Time) 792 K 1437 BB (14th All-Time) 759 SB (7th All-Time) .303 Average .408 On-base Percentage .449 Slugging Percentage 8-time All-Star 1942 Batter of the Year 5-time Batter of the Month Top 10s: AVG (5), OBP (11, 4 1sts), SLG (6), OPS (10, 1 1st), H (5), 2B (1), 3B (9, 2 1sts), HR (3), RBI (3), R (10, 4 1sts), BB (13, 2 1sts), SB (14) Coming into the league at a time when home runs were becoming more a part of the offensive game, Bud Breckenridge was a throw-back to an earlier time in Time Warp Baseball. His game was about speed. Stolen bases, triples, diving catches in the outfield, even the way he took first on a walk, it seemed like he was a coiled spring just waiting for a chance to zip from place to place. He stole 40 or more bases 12 straight seasons (50+ in 5 of those seasons, 60+ in 2) and hit double figures in triples 8 times in an era when triples all but disappeared from the offensive landscape. Every time he hit the ball, you wanted to cheer for him to stretch it. He never hit a lot of doubles, but he was such a smart and daring baserunner that he often stretched doubles into three-baggers, diving into third base in a cloud of dirt and legs and flying caps and popping to his feet grinning like a kid who'd just found the key to the candy store. But he could pop the ball over the fence too, going for double figures in home runs 11 times, hitting 19, 18 and 18 from 1938-1940. His 1942 Batter of the Year wasn't his best season, but when you were a contemporary of Oscar "The Kid" Vancini, Batter of the Year awards were a rarity. Consider some of these seasons that ranked among his best (and better than 1942), only to have Vancini steal the limelight with his prodigious power numbers: 1936: .321/.414/.512, 31 2B, 18 3B, 12 HR, 79 RBI, 101 runs, 55 SB 1938: .325/.444/.541, 33 2B, 10 3B, 19 HR, 89 RBI, 135 runs, 57 SB 1940: .321/.432/.507, 16 2B, 13 3B, 18 HR, 92 RBI, 101 runs, 47 SB 1945: .345/.457/.479, 18 2B, 15 3B, 7 HR, 101 RBI, 107 runs, 49 SB As I wrote of Breckenridge in 1936, "He never had the power that Sam (Kass, Pirates' Hall of Fame center fielder) did, but he was one of the most exciting players to watch that the Pirates had fielded in years. When he got on the basepaths, a buzz started rising in the stands. He would dance around first base, back and forth, doing everything he could to throw the pitcher off his game, and the whole while he’d be grinning like he knew something everyone else didn’t. And more times than not, he’d be off for second base like a shot from a gun. Could he hit? You bet he could. 31 doubles, 18 triples, 12 homers, a .321 average. He was a show waiting to happen all by himself." For a team that finished above 4th place just twice in his career and had a winning record only 6 of his 20 seasons, Bud Breckenridge often was the only attraction bringing fans to the ballpark. He was something like a god in Pittsburgh, with his trademark grin endorsing everything from car dealerships to breakfast cereal to grocery stores. He scored over 100 runs 8 times, a notable achievement for a player on such a bedraggled team. Consider also that his career didn't really begin until 1934, when Sam Kass was traded to the Washington Senators. The Pirates had an embarrassment of riches at center field, but couldn't find a way to get both Breckenridge and Kass in the lineup at the same time. Still, in part time duty from 1929 to 1933, Breckenridge shone. In 1932, in 153 at-bats, Breckenridge hit .373/.503/.582 with 14 steals. He followed that up in 1933 with a .353/.438/.424 line, stealing 22 bases and getting caught just a single time, an indication of the seasons that would await him when he was handed the full-time job at the age of 24.

Jeez, rough again this year. I don't see how anyone can vote for less than 10. And the people who just vote for 1 are either spiteful or deluded. High standards, my ass.

Agreed, metsgeek. There's a huge backlog of batters that are HoF-worthy.

Well, maybe. I know there is a big following behind him on our boards. I think he'll make it. If we get around 18-22 voters, I can't see that many people leaving him off.

Why? I can see disagreements with people's choices (my 10 vs. someone else's 10) since people favor different stats or accomplishments. But so you really think only 4 guys on this list are worthy? Will you never vote for the guys you've left off? Or is this some other point you're trying to make?
