Challenge - Your name in lights?

With the arrival of the SQL dump feature in OOTPB 2006, we're looking to see how creative people in our community can be and we're throwing open a challenge.

The challenge

We're looking for two SQL import tools which import for mySQL and MS Access. This could be in the way of PHP and VB Script or ... something else.

Whilst we're not telling you how to go about this, we believe the tool should scan a folder (user selectable) for *.sql files, open each of these files, and execute each line in a existing or newly created database as an SQL command.

All our *.sql files contain sql commands with one statement per line.

Check out The Road to Release feature titled "I need to take a dump" (http://www.ootpbaseball2006.com/news...ews=view&id=81)

The tool with the best interface and the most options will win

Win what I hear you cry

A free copy of OOTP Baseball 2006 (if you have already ordered I will refund you)

In addition, we will place your name in the credits and give your tool placement on our website!

Any questions, please post here.

Hey, Jarmenia, I'll vouch for you. I know you created that code. You should submit it.

And I promise not to enter ... unless I come up with something of my own.

Not likely.

I've got a setup file ready to go but it appears that the largest zip file that I can upload here is 100kb and the smallest that I can get my setup file is ~250kb. Any thoughts?

I don't think I'll have time for this myself, but I just wanted to say I love this! Contests rocks! Best of luck to all those participating. I very much look forward to seeing whatever you come up with!

That's alright, I did German Lit (and International Politics), so unless there's going to be a contest involving "Faust" I think I'm pretty useless here.

Please send your setup files together with brief instructions how to install and how to use the program to Marc Duffy at marc.duffy@sigames.com. Thank you!

Are there going to be 2 winners? One for Access and one for MySQL?

I am asking because my utility should work with both.

I was hoping that the winning "tool" would cover all the available export types (SQL, Access and CSV)

What needs to be done with the CSV data? CSV opens natively in excel, so it wouldn't need to be imported into anything. Or is the idea to import csv data into access/mysql?

I agree. What would you do with it? It doesn't even makes sense to import CSV into access/mysql if you already have the *.sql files.

Sorry Marc, but I don't think that this would be a good idea. IMHO there should be a tool for MS Access, that should be a Windows program, and a tool for mySQL that should run on UNIX, most likely written in PHP or Perl, and no tool at all for CSV files. Just my 0.02

Well if the tool could cover both formats that's fine too... but I guess most people will want to import into their mySQL database using a Unix tool, just because the database is on a Unix machine (their web server).

But there are also mySQL databases running on Windows, so if the tool can handle them, too, using ODBC for example, that will be great! I guess we need all of the possible pairings
  • Windows tool to import into Access
  • Unix tool to import into mySQL
  • Windows tool to import into mySQL
  • Mac tool to import into mySQL
  • Unix tool to import into Access doesn't make much sense i guess
But I assume #1 and #2 are the most important.
