How about Anderson Utilities - AU Purge?

Look at message #7 in this thread...

Deleting Messages

Any chance, Webcomedian, that you can come up with a quick utility that allows us to purge the messages, news, etc. every 10 years or so?

It is amazing how dramatically the game slows down, almost to the point of unplayability. Everything was solved by following this thread. But a handy new Anderson Utility would really be a snap.

Putting on my AUcostume. (Blue tights with a giant AU on the shirt)

Sounds like an easy one.

Let me know what files it should delete (I will move them to another location), as I got lost in that thread.

yeah, this would be a nice tool for those that are worried to go digging in their folders. Good idea.

AUPurge - here ya go...

http://www.planetootp.com/AUPurge/default.htm

It will let you optionally delete the messages, PbP and box scores.

It makes a backup copy under a pre-picked folder.

I hate to see history deleted, but knock yourself out.

I'll try it tomorrow, but this is just incredible how well and how quickly you develop these valuable utilities.

For how flawed the release of OOTP 2006 was, I really think you have bailed it out in many ways by making it much easier to implement logos, faces, etc. because of your utilities.

And AUPurge is a perfect example of a critical utility needed to fix the horrendous game slowdowns after a number of years of simming.

I wished you were a co-game developer with Markus. We'd probably have a fully functioning game.

This is so super I didn't have to wait until tomorrow to test. Zipped right through. Worked like a charm.

Just one thing: Add the option to delete the league news, too. You missed that one. Please make sure NOT to touch the player news folder or you'll lose the player histories. You did it right with this first version, except for skipping the league news folder.

When you say PbP, you mean game logs, I assume. Question: Did you include anything from the news\txt\leagues and news\txt\teams files? If so, how selective were you (transaction and injury logs vs. news)? Some people may want some things and not others.

Speed issues may come from having to address the thousands of files that end up in these folders, but I know for sure that folder size issues definitely come from them, so your effort is appreciated. And nice touch about backing things up in the process. Thanks.

Edit - I see rasnell answered my question in the meantime. If you do as he requests, I urge you to work in some selectivity as far as what types of items, for both league and team, will be deleted from news folders.

First of all, nothing is deleted, just moved to your backup folder. You can see exactly what was moved by looking there.

C:\backups\1975A.lg\box_scores (I only do files that match game_box*.html
C:\backups\1975A.lg\leagues (I only do files that match log*.txt
C:\backups\1975A.lg\messages (I only do files that match message*.txt

I originally had the news folder as an option, but when I browsed it, I was not sure what could be kept and what what could not be kept, or should be kept.

If someone could do some research on a league that is a few years old and see how deleting files from this folder affects the OOTP program, then I can add the ability to do those folders.

Yet again Larry fixes an OOTP error. If it weren't for these Utilities OOTP2006 would be completely unplayable. Larry's stuff is free but those clowns at SI charge us $39.95...yeah that makes sense!

I agree that Larry's Utilities are awesome and free!

That's about it.

I can tell you that I deleted everything in those news\txt\leagues and news\txt\teams folders, knowing exactly what I was doing, and my game runs fine and game file space needs are way down.

However: 1) This is my game only, a sample of one - hardly scientific, and 2) I made the choice not to have any of this stuff available and I have not missed it. Others may want some of it, hence my continued urging to be careful about deleting folder contents without looking. Your approach seems to address that concern, however, by not deleting but moving stuff to another folder.

Anyway, my final word on this matter: Caution.

I agree with 1998 Yankees. What is deleted causes no problems for me. I would just add the news/league/txt to the list of items that you're removing, Larry.

Also Larry, are any of these removed files required by your other utilities or does the CSV dump take care of everything for all other AU utilities?

Question

I deleted all the messages and when I go back into the game the messages are gone but the dates of the messages I deleted are still there

But you should see how many SI employees can fit inside a Volkswagen.

I believe you need to delete messages.dat and let the game create a new blank one. This should solve your problem

will this util be updated for 07? I've seen a few people mention they are having problems with large file sizes again on the tech support forum.
