Normalizer: Useful to anyone?
I made a little Access database from the Lahman database that allows you to enter a year, press a button, and have all statistics instantly normalized to that year.
I only have Batting stats in there right now, but I figured I'd bring it up here in case anyone was interested. The way I went about normalizing is a bit unusual. I wanted to have something that was simple enough to do but would work with OOTP. I used number of standard deviations from the mean, weighted by at bats. So if a player was one standard deviation from the mean number of homeruns per at bat in 1910 and you normalize to 1998, he will be one standard deviation from the mean of homeruns per at bat in 1998. I also did all the rates per at bat rather than per plate appearance, just because it was quicker. Potentially, this could be revamped to work with different formulas, include park factors, etc. It is more just an experiment to produce an instant normalizer than anything. It works, but there are error messages where no data exist for players in certain years (I don't mind much, since their data are blank in the database anyway). It's an Access database, so you need Access to run it. And it's too big to upload here, although I could split it into multiple compressed files or upload it somewhere if there's interest. Is anyone interested in this sort of thing?
