Combining two league database's

Has anyone ever successfully appended one league's files onto another one, or would clearing up the duplicate player and team id's that resulted be too much of a nightmare? I have this crazy idea of merging an 8-team fictional league with a 16-team historical league.

Alternately, would it be possible to just import those 8 teams into the existing 16-team league, one-by-one?
