So I was going through Gern's template that he recently posted and I saw that there were a couple designs in it that I really liked and wanted in my template so I decided to try to add them to it. After hours of fiddling with the programs I think I finally came up with some workable ways of doing it, but I was wondering if you or others have better ways. Here are my notes:

Quote:
layer transfer instructions from ps to psp:

load in ps
duplicate layer to new image
save as none interlaced png
load new file in psp

option A:
load target file in psp
new mask layer from image
use source opacity

option B:
select element
float
invert
flood with opposite color (white)
select all
copy
load target file in psp
paste
select opposite color with magic wand
erase
Now option A obviously results in a mask whereas option B results in a regular layer. I wasn't quite sure which one resulted in a look that was closer to the look in ps, but they were definitely different and IMO A did look better. Option A looked (at least to my eyes) as having crisper edges and being slightly thinner. It also seemed to be what you did as you used masks (why I didn't first try to copy your way, I don't know, but I finally stumbled on trying to use masks). I feel it's usable, but part of me would just like to straight copy layers from ps.

The big problem I found in just straight copying layers is that psp doesn't seem to provide you a way of copying an element and keeping it positioned in the exact same spot on your canvas. It insists on centering the element so say a front of the jersey design ends up smack in the middle of the canvas and you have to move it back into its correct position which, at least for us sometime perfectionists, is overly tedious and ultimately not something I want to bother doing. So I settled for coloring the background and then later erasing it, but as I mentioned that produces a result that just doesn't look right. You'd think there'd be a better way. Maybe there is.

Any tips?

As an aside, I really liked how you had your color layers underneath your masks only have a rectangle around the mask area as it helps me quickly recognize which layer I'm looking for (I find the text size of the layer labels to be too small). It took me awhile to realize how to do it myself, but I finally figured it out so I'll post that in case others would like to do the same:

Quote:
to create rectangle selection from selection:

select element(s) with magic wand
selections > modify > expand (by 1 pixel)
switch to selection tool
click on "create selection from... current selection" button

Using a layer mask for the color is definitely the easiest way for me to find and manage all the main layers in my logos and jerseys. They also allow me to quickly and easily try out different colors.

I try not to rely on them, as they aren't very efficient (in terms of keeping the files small), but I end up with dozens of them anyway.

As for PSP questions, I don't use it at all, so I have no constructive feedback to offer.

The easiest way to copy a layer and keep the position the same is to add a small square (4 pixel square brush or smaller) to each of the diagonal corners on the source image. Doesn't matter which corners. Save the layer, PNG is fine. Open the PNG in PSP and copy the layer and paste as a new layer in to your template. Look at the attached image. I filled it with gray(so you could see it) and added red to the corners. The red will not show on your jersey. Now the elements will be in the correct position.

A tip for PSP users is to change the color of the layer groupings. You can make the groups different colors for organizational purposes. Double click on the group. In the Layer Properties check the 'Highlight in layers palatte'. Select a color. Makes viewing the groups easier.

Thanks. If you guys are more than happy with masks then I should be too. I guess I was just being silly in wanting mine to just be straight copies of the originals. I do find masks convenient.

That makes so much more sense than what I was doing! Thank you very much for the beacon!

Interesting! I'll check that out. Thanks again.
