Uniform Editing questions

I have a couple dumb questions about editing uniform templates:

I downloaded the templates from PadresFan's (.psd) and went to go edit them with Gimp 2.4. However, every time I tried to customize the colors, the colors I added were in greyscale. However, the colors that were there originally are still intact.

I then tried using Fireworks to edit them Uniforms. I was cruising along pretty good until I got to the button editing step. From what I understand, I'm supposed to select the button layer and then swipe the paint brush down the center to color the buttons. However, I get a strange shadowy smudge down the middle. Is this a sign of Fireworks not being able to "Lock Transparency" and I'm messing up the alpha filters?

It's very strange... When using GIMP it seems I can't put my own colors. It seems like no matter what color I have selected, the brush just puts down different shades of the color already present on the layer (ie the "Shoulder's" layer, if i select a yellow color, the brush/fill puts down a light red/pink color)

Hmm, however, the pinstripe layer is fine, and the button layer colors are fine (except when painting the buttons, I only get a big line of color instead of colored buttons)

The collar is giving me problems. Every color I try to use seems to be coming out greyscale

You're painting the entire layer when you do that. Select just the buttons by clicking them, then paint.

I've finally figured out GIMP a bit. I have to specifically select to lock transparency on layers where i'm editing details (Like buttons and stripes) and deselect 'Edit layer mask' when editing other layers, such as the collar.

Hmm, now I'm using GIMP 2.6 and it seems all of the layers are askew when I open a freshly downloaded template...

I have Gimp 2.4.6 and am still trying to figure it out.

I'm trying to create flag jerseys along the lines of what tombair has done. What I want to do is create a jersey in the proper jersey shape, with the flag design making up the jersey. I have been able to create a layer on the jersey template with the flag image I want, but I wind up with this:

What happens when you use that jersey, Antonin? It should look OK because it is supposed to only use the parts of the jersey graphic that correspond to the jersey, sleeves, etc.

If you want, you can layer this on top.

I went with paint.net and it is great for jerseys. I never got the hang of using GIMP. I use paint.net for 99% of my graphics.

Thanks for the layer. When I use that jersey, it works out fine, but I wanted to be able to create and post jerseys here that others might want to use. If a jersey includes the full image instead of the truncate image it just looks bad.

I tried a number of times to get the hang of GIMP and paint.net, but just couldn't figure out either one. I have some nice ideas but I'm not very graphically adept. So I just abandoned jersey creation for a while.

Thus my very late reply to your kind post.

Maybe I'll give jersey creation a shot once again next weekend, using your extra layer.

I'm a bit late to the party here I realise... but if you want the jersey template to look right (using the GIMP), what you need to do is:

-Paste the flag as a new layer, like you have done.

-On the jersey layer - either right click and choose "alpha to selection", if the jersey is a separate layer of its own (ie with no background) OR use the magic wand+ tool to select the back, front and collar of the plain jersey (if the original is a flat layer - ie jersey and surrounding background.

-Then, select the flag layer again. On the menu bar go to the "Image" drop down (I think its that one, if not its the one next to it), choose "invert selection". Then cut. You'll just be left with the jersey-shaped bit of flag.
