3D Stadium Construction
I'm continuing a discussion we had in another thread
http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...-together.html where we started discussing creating new stadiums using 3D modeling software. Since we had sort of highjacked that thread and were off topic, I decided to continue the discussion here. As I mentioned, I am designing stadiums for my Keystone Baseball League teams, starting with York, Pa. Phineas Davis Field will be a roughly 6,000 seat stadium similar in design to the old Ebbets field (short high fence in RF, large scoreboard, lots of signs on the OF fences). Before doing any 3D, I figured out exactly what I want the stadium to look like using a 2D overhead view. This is it-- ![]() The RF wall will be roughly 28-30 ft high. The scoreboard is roughly 30 x 21 ft. Part of the fence will be a see through screen but most of it will be covered with signs. A street that runs behind the fence caused the odd dimensions. I'll post more as my work continues.

I've completed the scoreboard. Comments are appreciated. If I did anything stupid, let me know!

It's been a while since I had anything new to show. It was fairly easy until it got about 90% done, and that last 10% or so is hard to get right.
As you can see I filled up the seating with a non-3D "crowd pattern" (which could use some improvement), tipped the perspective slightly, and swapped out the natural grass for artificial turf - I envision that in the eventual Illustrator file, the user would have the choice of grass as shown earlier, turf as shown here, and maybe a third option for field turf if I ever get it to look right. I've gotten kinda tired of doing this park, so maybe I'll try to make a whole new and different park next. |

After a long, long time familiarizing myself with Blender (took a while for working in 3D to sink in), I've finally made some progress. There's still a LOT of work to be done and it's slow going since I'm learning the software techniques as well as designing (and hitting undo a lot).
But here's a view of Phineas Davis Stadium in York, Pa. It's completely fictional - for my Keystone Baseball League's York Strongmen. The basic structure is done but a lot of the details need to be added.

And, since it's 3D you can view the park from any angle. That's not useful in OOTP but it's fun to do. Here's a view from behind the home dugout.

I've done a little more tweaking. Fixed the end of the scoreboard and added a few of the signs. The park is going to be similar to Ebbets Field - signs all over the OF fences. Since it's near an industrial area, I added a background. Just to see how it'd look.
I'm happy with how it's looking so far. The textures need improvement - the fence for example. But that'll be my last step after I get everything "built".

Not a whole lot of progress as I was on vacation this week. I constructed the light towers. Not sure if they look right or not. But I'm going to move on to other items for now. Any thoughts are appreciated.
I also added some boxes to temporarily fill in for the buildings that will go outside the outfield fences.

Worked on the roof a bit. Still much to do but I'm making progress.

Looks nice, Tombair! Not to compete with the OP, but I figured since this thread was recently bumped, I'd show what I had to offer in regards to 3d stadium modeling:
![]() | New Yankee Stadium modeled by Ry1220 with Google SketchUp. | EDIT: A better view here. I will finish this model eventually, and based on feedback, I may make some other (fictional) stadiums. Last edited by ry1220; 06-05-2009 at 10:33 PM. Reason: added link to better image |

I love the idea. I've wanted something like this for a while in OOTP or in text sims in general for well over a decade. Nice work.

Nice work, ry1220. Nice to have more stadium creators join in.
I can see I'm modeling a lot more detail than you - a lot more than is really needed. But I enjoy it (when it works - don't enjoy working on something for an hour and thinking it looks great...and then looking from another angle and seeing that it's screwed up with no way to fix it). I redo a lot. I'm not much of any artist but I am persistent. ![]() And if you guys want to see an awesome model, go here Yankee Stadium 3D Model . He's modeled 1960s era Yankee Stadium including the complete exterior. It's amazing.
