Hello

If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated, i have been trying for years to get this right, but have never got anywhere!

I have this image, and i want a small white outline around the image, so that the logo looks good on a red back ground. I have got both adobe photoshop 6, and corel paint shop pro photo x2, but despite trawling through everything i can't seem to manage it.

The first imagae(red sox) is the one which i want an outline around it, whilst the white sox logo already has the white outline, so you can see what i mean.

again any help would be most welcome.

I decided to take your original and run it through Vector Magic to clean it up some. It's not exactly the same, but it's another option.

I use Macromedia Fireworks for my editing. I have no idea how to run Photoshop or Paint Shop, anything besides fireworks, really. In Fireworks, there are image options that can be applied, such as drop shadows and 3D beveling. One of the options is 'glow.' It's a gradient shading effect, but can be customized be decreasing the transparency and changing the offset distance until you have a solid, sharp outline. Again this is in Fireworks, and I have no idea if your programs are similar. The Vector Magic program can be found at www.vectormagic.com. You can do it online right on their site or download the program to run offline. It's free to try and kind of fun to mess with.

Using PSP X2 gives you a few options.
1) Since the original image does not have a transparent background you need to remove it. Click in the black with the Magic Wand Tool. Here are my typical settings, adjust as necessary; Replace, RGB Value, 15 Tolerance, anti-alias on, outside. You should now have the marching ants. On some images you may need to SHFT Click to add to you selection.
2) Right click on the layer and click on Promote Background Layer. Press the Delete key. This will remove the background. You may need to select other sections and delete them on some images. One problem with this image is that the image is too close to the borders. Create a new transparent image 170x170 (or 160x160) pixels. Copy the original layer to the 170x170 image.(You could also resize the original socks by 90-95% so you will have the space to add a border)
3) Now you want to add a white border. Click in the transparent area with the Magic Wand. Press CTRL-SHFT-I to invert the selection. Create a new raster layer and move it below the original if you don't already have one. Select the blank layer. Click on Selections/Modify/Expand. Try expanding by three pixels. Fill the new selection with white (255,255,255). De-select the selection. CTRL-D. You now have a white border.
4) The white fill layer probably has jaggies. This is because there was no anti-aliasing done. You can add some Blur to smooth the edges. Click Adjust/Blur/Blur. Or you can add some Softness. Click Adjust/Softness/Soften. Different Blur and Soften options can be used.
5) Another option is to use a feathered fill. Go back to step 3. Instead of Expanding the border click on Selections/Modifly/Feather. Try a feather of 8-10 pixels. This will add a gradient type of fill below the original image.

Choose whichever looks best to you. OOTP will resize the 170x170 image.

Wow, I don't think I could ever get the hang of PSP after using Fireworks. You can do the same thing in one click.

After you read this don't hit yourself in the forehead too hard (I could have had a V8 moment).

Use the Flood Fill Tool aka the paintcan.
