Patch-style Logos for Modern-Day MLB Teams
I figured out a kind of neat effect using the GIMP for logos. I put together the following set mostly for fun, but if anyone plays a modern-day league and is looking for logos, here are some to consider:

I really like these. Thanks.
Is it possible you could do some historical logos like this as well? How about the following in the stitch style above. (If possible make KC with white trim instead of red.) If so thanks... Last edited by DreamTeams; 04-12-2010 at 12:24 AM. |

I can certainly take a stab at 'em. I'm a little busy right now, but I'll try to get to it soon.

I did this by request, which you might like to use for the league logo if you're using these:

I can, but you'll need to give me a base image and some colors to work with.

Quote:
The base layer is a brush using the appropriate color, with the brush on the 19 pixel (largest) circular setting and scaled out to 7.5. I center it and make the big circle. Next, I apply the "canvas" filter under the "artistic" filters. I set that at 2, because the effect is supposed to be subtle; setting it higher gives you more extreme highlights. I add a new layer; this will turn into the border. Again, I select the appropriate color and make a circle using the same brush at the same setting; it should be centered and completely cover the base layer. I use the eraser set to the 19-pixel circular brush, but set to 6.0. If you center it, it'll erase the middle of the circle, revealing the base layer in the middle. You can adjust the size of the border you like by changing the scale of the brush you use for the eraser; the higher the scale, the thinner the border will be. I duplicate that layer, and select the color. I then use the "hurl" filter (under the "Noise" filter submenu) set at a randomization of 30. This gives a bunch of dots all over the circle. The cool embroidery effect is from the "motion blur" filter (under the "blur" submenu). If you set it to the "zoom" setting and give it a length of around 30, it looks a lot like the finished logos do. I set the transparency of that layer to about 70, then merge it down. This emphasizes the proper color; if you don't have the layer underneath in the proper color the effect tends to make the color less distinct. Sometimes I'll merge it down to the base layer, and then apply the "bevel" filter (under the "decor" submenu). The logo in the center can be basically anything; for the original set I downloaded the cap logo from Chris Creamer's sports logos site, but for my own fictional league I've just used letters generated from the "add text layer" function in GIMP and for the eight that DreamTeams asked for I used the logos he provided (which I think Captain Walrus originally made). Anyhow, once I have that I paste it into a new layer and center it. When I have it where I want it, I duplicate the layer, select the color, use the "hurl" filter, and open up the "motion blur" filter. Unlike the border, though, I use the "linear" version and I set the length to 5 rather than 30. This gives the embroidery effect you see on the logos themselves. Then I follow the same process as with the border: I set the layer transparency to about 70, merge it down, merge it down again (so now there's just one layer) and apply the "bevel" filter. It's important to be careful that the layer size of the selection you have when you apply the "bevel" filter is the same as the image size or you can get some weird effects - the bevel will run along the edge of the layer. That's basically it; it's not that tricky once you've done it a few times. As always with the GIMP, though, it took a lot of trial and error to get it the way I wanted it. Hope that helps!

basic instructions for GIMP - simplified
1. create base transparent layer 150 x 150 pixels 2. Brush tool 19px circle scale 7,50 to create the backing 2. same brush to create the ring 2a. eraser, 19px circle, scale: depends, he used 6, i use 6,25 3. duplicate ring layer 4. import logo layer, scale to fit inside your outer ring. 5. using selection tool by color (Shift+O), (in the tool settings set the slider to 80) select then copy (ctrl+v) each color of your logo Now the fun part begins 6. on each duplicated layer use filter > noise > hurl, with a random setting of 30% 7. on your logo layers use filter > blur > motion blur, set to linear (the highest radial button) with a lenght setting of 5 7a. select each color on your base logo layer (the one with the original logo) and delete that area of each logo duplicate layer that is not of the selecter color. repeat with each color. 7b. again with the ctrl+O tool, select the area that is not part of the logo, and delete the remaining unneeded blurry noise on your color layers 8. run the motion blur on your outer ring, this time using the radial setting (the lover radial button) and a lenght of 30. 8a. repeat 7b. on this layer too. 9. use the eraser tool with a transparency level of 30 (the top slider) on all the ring's area, without letting the mouse button go. Select the void around the outer ring. merge the modified outer ring with the original one (right click on the modded layer, sixth option from the top) 9a. use the bevel filter on the resulting layer (can't tell you in which sub-menu it is, my GIMP is in french), this will produce a square shading effect like in Mel Ott's patches. To produce a more rounded effect like mine's press ctrl+I before applying the filter 10. repeat 9. with your logo layers Last edited by shawa666; 04-30-2010 at 10:13 PM. thanks, but how do you import the logo (I can't find the function)? I think that I got it, I Open as Layer function under file. Now, I don't understand step 5. What should happen when I do it. Also, are you talking about the threshold value under the select by color function?
thanks, dcc
