Not quite sure of official best size. But the ones I use are 1225 x 769.

they should be at least 1024x768...anything smaller will give a fuzzy picture.

I hate Gimp, would Irfanview work better? I have not used it in the last 2 years.

I've got scads of larger ballpark images you can DL. I've tried hard to keep them nicely lined up, but I'm sure you know how hard that can be. I'm on a Mac too.
