Negro Leagues: Names Database
I have finished with adding my Negro League first names to the database. Here is the process I used:
First, I started off using the names under the historical list ( section 39). I trimmed down many of the occurrences of names...less Mikes, Bobs, Jims, etc. After that, I went through the Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Baseball Leagues by James A. Riley and added all of the first names there that were not already in section 39. So, if you use this first names list, I suggest adding this country to your country's database. This provides 95% Negro League names and 5% Hispanic. 227,United States (Negro-Leagues),U.S.A.,USA,American,4,5,39,95,1,5,, I will be working on the last names now unless someone has already done so. |

Brilliant. I don't think anyone is attacking the issue with name sets for US Blacks yet. Try getting a US cities list change the value from 206 to 227 . . . . . .and then see if you can set up a parallel USA to represent the separate world of segregated America circa 1920. It may be an overly daunting task but you could use the records from here (Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File, ca. 1938 - 1946 Enlistment Records: World War II Army Enlistment Records) to come up with a realistic era-appropriate name set.
Here are the first 1000 records with "RACE AND CITIZENSHIP = 2, K": 1000 By changing what follows after "&rpp" you could increase the records per page to the amount ypu would like. Adding "&pg=#" (where # is a number) to the end will let you go to the different pages. Michael Eng |

Let's see how this works when I turn this one up to 11. Tis a pity they didn't do it themselves. EDIT 65000 at a time failed to work. ERROR 500 Internal server error. Last edited by Raidergoo; 06-09-2006 at 03:30 PM. |

I like my historical names file better than the one that came with the game.
Don't you think a negro first names file should exclude alot of the stock historical first names? .............to get rid of the ultra 'white' names? |

Sure, that's why I edited the historical file before I began adding the names from the Negro League Encyclopedia. Also, they have a higher percentage of Biblical names, Isiah, Moses, Solomon, etc.
Check the list I have out, it's pretty good. Feel free to add some additional names to our list here. Last edited by Arlie Latham; 06-09-2006 at 04:11 PM. |

I agree about the nickname types. That's why I have these names in there,:
Slappy, Sloppy, Mule, Kid, Fatty, Schoolboy, Ping, Cap,Doc, Gunboat,Mello,Rollo, Monk....and Bingo is in there as well I think it will seem even more like a Negro league when I adjust the last names file. There will be a higher number of Williams, Johnson, Jackson, Washington, Franklin, and that sort. |

I used my historical last names file when I created the test league. IMO, the first names still need some additions. A great start, however. |

I agree. I went through all of the nickname file and selected those which would make for a colorful first name in the Negro Leagues. See if you want to add these.
