Questdog's Names for OOTP 15

I've just sent a new file to OOTPmods.com with upgraded versions of my name sets for OOTP 14.

From the readme file:

There are three different name sets to choose from: the 1870 set, the 1970 set and the 2000 set.

All three sets have been upgraded from the OOTP 14 release.

OOTP 15 has 40 different name ethnicities. The following ethnicity groups have been redone by me:

0 (US - Modern)
1 (Hispanic)
2 (Japanese)
39 (US - Historical)

The above 4 groups have completely new sets of first and last names. Group 39 is now used for African American names.

3 (Korean)
6 (Dutch)
7 (German)
10 (Norwegian)
14 (Czech)
15 (Polish)
16 (Scottish)
18 (Irish)
20 (English)

The above 9 groups have only new last names so far, except in the 1870 set, where the Germans and Irish also have new first name sets and the Scottish and English are given a copy of the set 0 first names.

All names have been painstakingly proofread for spelling and punctuation errors as well as for appropriateness for their group, but if you find any mistakes, please let me know (but I’m not responsible for sets other than those mentioned as changed, though I did fix a lot of typos and errors in the others). All groups created by me have no diactritical marks or special characters. Also, if you feel there is a name missing from a set that should be there (maybe yours?), let me know and I'll add it.

Here are the quantitative change comparisons based on the 2000 name set versus the OOTP 15 default files. Of course, the QUALITATIVE changes are immeasurable.....

Code:
Ethnicity - Number of last names - (Default file number) - Number of first names - (Default file number)
US (Modern) 129,591 (15,264) 1,128 (2,041)
Hispanic 16,656 (12,781) 829 (341)
Japanese 3,123 (1,599) 2,614 (736)
Korean 489 (153)
Dutch 9,422 (1232)
German 3,781 (2351)
Norwegian 961 (3219)
Czech 8,470 (1307)
Polish 20,290 (1217)
Scottish 305 (428)
Irish 3,917 (3004)
UK 4,901 (3714)
US (Historic) is now US (African-American) and has 17,988 last names and 1,627 first names
The huge increase in US last names (almost 10 times the default number) makes for much greater variety and splitting the African-American names into their own set makes for much more believable combinations and allows facegen to sync properly.

"QD_beard_frequency_default.txt" is set up to allow no beards for any players. If your league is set between 1900 and 1972, this is the file for you. To use it, you need to install it like the files above and then import it from within the game. You can uncheck the box in all of your teams' uniform set up pages that allows beards for that team to accomplish the same thing.

"Demographics.csv" and "Demographics.ods" are the same spreadsheet in two different file formats that shows the proper player origin percentages that you should enter in league set up for each decade of major league baseball to recreate the mix of players that actually existed. These numbers are for initial overall player percentages and will work for draft percentages as well, if you disable all the other ways players can enter the league. If you allow international free agents and discoveries, you need to figure out the numbers on your own.

A big thanks to Randy Andrews for the Polish last name set. It meets or exceeds the Questdog Standard of Excellence.

Thank you and enjoy!

P.S. These files will also work for OOTP 14 and some earlier versions.

You can download the files here:

Looks great

I don't see any Heinie's, Rube or Lefty's. I know they are technically nicknames, but are those names big in the 1870 nameset?

They are there in their proper proportions. Lefty is a new addition this year. In the past I have kept it out of the lists since there is no guarantee that a left-handed player will be the only recipient of the name. However, since it was such a common moniker, I decided to include it this year. I just plan to change any righties to southpaws that end up with it. If this is not your preferred solution, you can easily delete the name from the lists before starting up a league.

P.S. Rube is in the lists, but it actually was not very common before the turn of the century.

I am noticing that all the names files have modified dates of April 2014 except for the 2000_first_names.txt file, of which the modified dates is 7/27/09. Is this because this is the one file that you did not update, or did you mistakenly zip an old version into the .7z file?

Hi QuestDog,

I really want to insert these into my game, but could you please provide instruction for how to do so on MAC? I'm awfully confused. The default game data is a zipped package, how do I open it and insert this in the proper place for Mac? Thank you so much!

That is the only file that did not get an upgrade from the OOTP 14 release (or the OOTP 13 or the OOTP 12 or....). That particular file took the absolute most work for me to create of any of the name files and I will never recreate it again from scratch. If anyone ever reports some errors, I'll update it, but so far, no one has. Someday I will make an effort to upgrade some of the first name ethnicities that I have not yet edited and then it will get an update. But since I don't personally use the file much, there is not a lot of incentive right now. The 1970 file is my favorite.

In order to properly install this, do I just replace the names file in the database folder with this file? I noticed that the names file in the default database folder is a text folder while this is a 7Z file (whatever that is.) Is that all I need to do? I assume that this will impact all future generated names?

a .7z file is a fancy .zip file....you need to unzip it and then read the readme file inside for instructions.

One more quick question, Questdog: When I try to reload the world data XML file as the instructions specify in an already created league, do I say yes or no to the "Do you want to update and add missing nations, states and cities..." prompt? Am I adding missing data or just running an update? I didn't see that addressed in the readme.

Not 100% sure...I have not tested this.

My world_default.xml has fewer countries than the default one and I don't think there are any in my file that are not in the default file.

I would be incline to choose Yes.

Let me know how it works out.

First thing it did was changed the baseball quality levels around the world from the default. Now the only two countries that are listed as Excellent are the US and DR. Japan, for instance, is down to average, but there are only eight countries above average, so that could be normal. I'll let you know if anything seems off.
