Questdog's Names for OOTP16

I have sent a new file to ootpmods.com.

It is an update of my Names files for OOTP15.

The names are all the same, except for a few minor corrections.

The QD_world_default.xml file is made new from scratch.

The 1870_world_default.xml file is unchanged.

Once they make it available, please download it and let me now of any mistakes.

Thanks.

The next post is the read_me from the file.

Questdog's Name sets for OOTP 16.

There are three different name sets to choose from: the 1870 set, the 1970 set and the 2000 set.

OOTP 16 has 40 different name ethnicities. The following ethnicity groups have been redone by me:

0 (US - Modern)
1 (Hispanic)
2 (Japanese)
39 (US - Historical)

The above 4 groups have completely new sets of first and last names. Group 39 is now used for African American names.

3 (Korean)
6 (Dutch)
7 (German)
10 (Norwegian)
14 (Czech)
15 (Polish)
16 (Scottish)
18 (Irish)
20 (English)

The above 9 groups have only new last names so far, except in the 1870 set, where the Germans and Irish also have new first name sets and the Scottish and English are given a copy of the set 0 first names.

All names have been painstakingly proofread for spelling and punctuation errors as well as for appropriateness for their group, but if you find any mistakes, please let me know (but I’m not responsible for sets other than those mentioned as changed, though I did fix a lot of typos and errors in the others). All groups created by me have no diactritical marks. Also, if you feel there is a name missing from a set that should be there (maybe yours?), let me know and I'll add it.

Here are the quantitative change comparisons based on the 2000 name set versus the OOTP 15 default files :

Ethnicity - Number of last names - (Default file number) - Number of first names - (Default file number)
US (Modern) 129,591 (15,264) 1,128 (2,041)
Hispanic 16,656 (12,781) 829 (341)
Japanese 3,123 (1,599) 2,614 (736)
Korean 489 (153)
Dutch 9,422 (1232)
German 3,781 (2351)
Norwegian 961 (3219)
Czech 8,470 (1307)
Polish 20,290 (1217)
Scottish 305 (428)
Irish 3,917 (3004)
UK 4,901 (3714)
US (Historic) is now US (African-American) and has 17,988 last names and 1,627 first names

The huge increase in US last names (almost 10 times the default number) makes for much greater variety and splitting the African-American names into their own set makes for much more believable combinations and allows facegen to sync properly.

The following files are included in this archive:

1870_first_names.txt
1870_names.txt
1870_world_default.xml
1970_first_names.txt
1970_names.txt
2000_first_names.txt
2000_names.txt
Demographics.csv
Demographics.ods
QD_beard_frequency_default.txt
QD1870_beard_frequency.txt
QD_ethnicities.txt
QD_world_default.xml
Questdogs_Readme.txt

Instructions for use on a PC (if you have a Mac, you are on your own, but it should be nearly the same):

To use these files first unzip them all into the 'database' folder where the original name files reside. Usually this is at "...\Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 16\database".

Then, right-click on the file in that folder called "ethnicities.txt" and choose "Rename" from the menu that pops up. Rename the file to "ORG_ethnicities.txt". This will back the file up so we don't write over it in case you decide you like it better later on. Now, right click on the file named "QD_ethnicities.txt" and drag it a short distance, release the right mouse button and choose "Copy here" from the menu that pops up. That will create a file called "QD_ethnicities - Copy.txt" Right click on this copied file and choose "Rename" and rename it to "ethnicities.txt". Copying my files before renaming them allows you to keep a backup of all the Questdog files in case they get overwritten (which sometimes happens on patch installations). Note: If you do not see the ".txt" extension on the original files, then you have not set up your windows installation to view file extensions. That is okay, but when you rename the files, do NOT type the ".txt" extension (or the ".xml" extension for later files.

Now choose which Questdog set you want to use, either the 1870, 1970 or 2000 set. Rename both "first_names.txt" and "names.txt" as above, putting "ORG_" as a prefix on them. Then copy and rename the corresponding files for the set you want to use just like I described earlier.

The next step is to install a new "world_default.xml" file. My files are edited versions of the original OOTP file. They include every nation that has ever sent a real live major league ball player to the USA and do NOT include any that never have. They must be used to get the name files to work correctly. If you don't use them you will never have black players in your league. If you are computer savvy and do not want to use these files, it is possible to use the default OOTP 16 file if you edit the <ETHNICITIES> entry for the USA to match what is in my "QD_world_default.xml" file. I am not responsible for the silly names you will get from the nations I did not edit, however!

There are two "world_default.xml" files included in this archive. The "QD_world_default.xml" should be used if you chose the 1970 or 2000 name sets. The "1870_world_default.xml" is specially designed to replicate segregated baseball. All players from the USA will be caucasion. If you want to set up a Negro League, there is another country included in the file called "America" that only produces African-American players. If you do NOT want your 19th century baseball league segregated, then use the "QD_world_default.xml" file. You install it the same way the other files were installed by first renaming the original and then copying your chosen file and renaming the copy to "world_default.xml".

And you are done!

"QD_beard_frequency_default.txt" is set up to allow no beards for any players. If your league is set between 1900 and 1972, this is the file for you. To use it, you need to import it from within the game. You do not need to rename the file to import it. You can uncheck the box in all of your teams' uniform set up pages that allows beards for that team to accomplish the same thing.

"QD1870_beard_frequency.txt" is set up to allow beards that I thought looked appropriate for the 19th century. The settings are entirely subjective and not based on any data. To use it import it from within the game.

"Demographics.csv" and "Demographics.ods" are the same spreadsheet in two different file formats that shows the proper player origin percentages that you should enter in league set up for each decade of major league baseball to recreate the mix of players that actually existed. These numbers are for initial overall player percentages and will work for draft percentages as well, if you disable all the other ways players can enter the league. If you allow international free agents and discoveries, you need to figure out the numbers on your own.

If you want to change the names for a league already running, make sure to "Re-import name & ethnicity database" and "Re-import world database from XML file" from the "Available Actions" drop down menu on the "Databse" tab of League Setup. This will NOT change the names of any players already in the league, but all new players in the future will have the upgraded monikers.

Any questions, comments, and/or bug reports can be PM'd to Questdog on the OOTP forums or e-mailed to me (address in the actual read_me).

A big thanks to Randy Andrews for the Polish last name set. It meets or exceeds the Questdog Standard of Excellence.

Thank you and enjoy!

If anyone desires a copy of this and cannot wait for it to be available at ootpmods.com, I can email it direct if you PM me an email address. Your email server needs to be able to accept an attachment ~2 MB in size (this should not be a problem for most).

One of the select few "must-have" mods for the game every year. Thanks for all your work on this.

I know you said us Mac users are on our own, but has anyone else had trouble unzipping the file? I get a cpgz file and even when I do it through terminal, nothing happens. Any help?

Thanks, tried re-downloading the file, same results.

EDIT: Nevermind, worked through terminal, just put all the files in a weird place.

Does the new patch overwrite these files during installation? Great stuff, thanks.

Yes, patches almost always overwrite these files.

You do NOT need to re-import them into a saved-game created with them before a patch, however.

Once again, excellent work. I'm finally to the point where I want to create a league to really get into and this is one of the first things I looked for. Thanks for putting in this effort, very much appreciated.

Ping ----> Sir Questdog

Just double-checking protocol. After first installing the mod, I copied the Data folder to another folder I have called Protected. After installing any patch or new build, I copy that folder back into the game overwriting what was installed with the new version/patch. This is still necessary, correct, in order to preserve your data? I think that's what you were inferring in an earlier answer.

No, the MLB Quickstart does not play well with others....

Using my names in it is better than not using my names in it, but my names will not work as intended.....

Is that just in the MLB Quickstart? Or does that extend to setting up a game through 'New Standard Game' that includes MLB in it?
