I have received several questions and comments about my criteria for the facepack. Thank you all for your continued feedback. In an effort to clarify some of my criteria, I'll post a few of the updates coming in the next release, first the old image, then the new one. We'll start with Stan Johnson and Jorge Rubio, which illustrate an upgrade to my first priority (image/identifiability) over my fourth (color).

Here is Balvino Galvez, illustrating Major League uniform (#3) over color (#4). Again, replaced photo is on the left, new photo on the right.

You'll also notice, if you look at the file name of the minor league Galvez image, that I'm maintaining an archives of replaced photos, with the reason the image was replaced. I will be releasing both an updates pack, which includes all the images added (or in one case, moved to a different directory) since the last release, and a removed archive, including all of the images upgraded or otherwise taken out of the pack.

One point I did not mention, but that I hold as highly important (probably #1.5 on my list) is playing career vs. coaching/managing/post-career images. As an example, here is Gordon MacKenzie, whose coaching image is being replaced with a picture from his playing career.

The difference between points one (visibility/identifiability) and two (resolution) is a fine one, but one I believe is very important. In the case of Joe Berry, I'm replacing a very sharp, distant image with one that is slightly less sharp, but closer and more identifiable.

I have posted an update to the facepack on my FileFront site. This release includes 271 added/updated images, with 258 images replaced or, in cases of mistaken ID, removed. In addition to the full 1871-2009 facepack, I have uploaded a zip with all of the updates/additions since the previous facepack release on May 7, as well as an archive of all files removed from that prior version. I also updated the missing player list to reflect the latest changes, and finally uploaded individual decade zip files for each decade from 1870-2000. You can access the individual decade files, as well as the rest of my shared files, from the link in my signature line.

In this release I did not add two of the missing players recently posted here: John O'Donnell 1884 and Frank Quinlan 1891. In both cases I have not yet been able to verify the player identity.

I have not added many of the recent updates from baseball-reference, as I have found many player ID errors, which has made me hesitant to add images from B-R until I can individually verify the player ID.

Feel free to offer feedback or suggestions for the next release, which will probably come sometime in late July or early August.

Still listed as Henry M. Adkinson by most reference sources, SABR has recently discovered that Adkinson 1895 is actually J. Harry Atkinson. Thanks to SABR for tracking down an image of Atkinson as the secretary of the William Woods College board of directors. I am placing him in the facepack as harry_atkinson, based on his corrected ID.
