The Koana Islands (v 2.0) for OOTP 12 now includes Quickstart

Seeing as I have updated the Koana Islands I figured I would start a new thread to separate the old version with the new.

I have recreated the map and gave it a million times more detail which you can view a sample of it below.

The old Koana Islands was meant to be equivalent in size to the United States from side to side. I have now halved the size and included over 5,500 towns and cities. Included on the map are motorways, railways, high speed rail to help aid you in any story/dynasty you start.

The old information that I posted about the Islands in the original thread has now been updated to coincide with the smaller island size. I have also included information such as state populations and even a page and a half devoted on how to pronounce some of the city names and basic phrases to help you during your stay in Koana Islands which can all be found in the pdf titled "Guide to the Koana Islands". Another pdf is provided called "Town Names" which lists all of the 5,729 places alphabetically, along with the state they are found in and the population to further aid your dynasty.

The download below is merely an update to the database that now includes the Koana Islands. The new Koana Islands nation flag both for the game and a large editable flag image is provided along with the two pdfs mentioned above and the new and improved map.

Unlike last time, I have not yet provided a quickstart as I am still in the process of simming a history. The new quickstart will be based on a 3 tiered promotion/relegation league set-up. Stay tuned for that.

Download Instructions
1. Download the Koana Islands v2 for OOTP 12 by clicking here
2. Go to you OOTP12 directory that should be in Documents/Out of the Park Developments and open the folder called "database".
3. Rename "world_default.xml" something like "BACKUPworld_default.xml"
4. Now open the Koana Islands (OOTP12).zip and extract the contents to the desktop and open the folder "Koana Islands"
5. Inside should be a folder called database, open it up and copy both "world_default.xml" and the folder "nation_flags" to your OOTP 12 database directory that you were in before. Click "yes" if it asks to overwrite anything. JUST MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR OLD world_default.xml FILE!
6. You are now ready to rock and roll

Enjoy!

As always, any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you for providing this to the community. I am looking forward to trying it.

I've been in the laborious process of creating my own fictional league, which I intend to start in v12. I was about to get under the hood of world_default.xml, so I now intend to look at how you adjusted it and learn from that. (I also intend to play your league ).

The map is astounding. Was this done in Adobe Illustrator?

It wasn't that hard to move everything over to the new xml format as I had everything in excel already so merely had to make a few alterations here and there.

Yeah I built the map in Illustrator. It took me about 6 weeks.

I followed the install instructions but am unsure what to do next. There is no quickstart listed for this.

There is no quickstart just yet. The download up the top is merely if you wish to include the Koana Islands into the world so that you can start your own league.

The quickstart should be up in about a fortnight's time as I am still simming and also getting the website up and done

I tried starting a new league using the world database that you supplied, but once I try to create a new fictional league and find the nation of koana to start the league I can't find it. Its not in the list as far as I can see. I did everything that you had said in your post, but still can't find the nation its not among the K's or at the beginning or at the end? Any ideas ?

UPDATE:

Nevermind I found out the problem. I was copy the files straight to the different folders from the zip. I didn't extract it first and that is probably the reason I couldn't find it. Now I can see the nation. Thanks!

Second UPDATE:
Game crashed yesterday while trying to save it and when I booted it up today the Koana nation was again gone. Not sure what is going on. But I couldn't start a league with the Koana Islands because it wasn't in the list.

Koana Islands Promotion and Relegation Quickstart (v1.0)
I really wanted to release this once the website was up and running but due to my slow nature and passion for detail the website will be at least another month or so before it's presentable, so I thought I may as well release the quickstart now.

For starters, before anyone reads on, this is (yet another!) mammoth quickstart that clocks in at over 531mb (for a good reason though) and once extracted is around 1.3gb on the hard drive.

The Koana Baseball Association has been running since 1900 and is about to enter its 2011 season, that's over 110 years of history ready for you to dive into.

The league is split into 4 divisions with promotion and relegation:

  • Carlsberg Super League - 20 teams play a 162 game schedule. The top team wins the title, the bottom 3 are relegated to the...
  • citibank First Division - 20 teams play a 162 game schedule. The top 3 teams are promoted to the Super League and the bottom 3 are relegated to the...
  • citibank Second Division - 20 teams play a 162 game schedule. The top 3 teams are promoted to the First Division and the bottom team is relegated to the...
  • citibank Third Division - 18 teams are split into Eastern and Western Conferences where they play a 144 game schedule with the top two in each conference advancing to the Play-offs. The champion of the play-offs is promoted to the Second Division. Best of three for both series.
The top 3 divisions have been active since 1900 and no teams have folded or been relocated. The Third Division joined the Koana Baseball Association in 1963. It was originally an independent league called the Elite League that merged with the much larger KBA due to growing pains.

Rules and stuff
- All leagues use the Designated Hitter rule.
- Media money is NOT distributed to the teams and is in fact kept by the league. All money raised must be from ticket sales and merchandise sales.
- Every league has an active roster of 25 players, with Super League and First Division teams restricted to just 15 players on their Reserve roster. Second and Third division teams have no limit.
- Owner decides on budget
- Minimum Service Years for Free Agency is 4.
- Service Years required for Arbitration is 3.
- No Foreigners allowed, although this won't ruin the tight financial side of things if you change this.
- There is no amateur draft.

Some interesting teams to be
- Megopolis and New Auckland are the two most successful teams in the competition, with Vizhune lagging behind in third. All three are super rich and provide a good solid base to start your career. Because money is no object, you will regularly see large contracts being handed out (we're talking $35m a year for the superstars)
- Rothes and Independence City are considered the 'Big 5' but aren't quite as well off financially. They will also provide a great base to start your career, especially as Rothes has just re branded itself with a new logo for the start of the 2011 season.
- Saffron, Ivywood and Blanchester are the newly promoted teams in the Super League and could have a tough battle for survival yet still have a fair amount of money to give you an adequate chance of nabbing some big name signings. The latter in particular has made 3 straight promotions and is probably the best off financially.
- Greenborough, Dyce and Creetown were relegated from the Super League last year and would be a good option for someone who wants the challenge of getting them back up a.s.a.p. If you take too long they could be financially crippled from the SL contracts they currently have.
- Cape Coral and Dunnport have never left the Third Division and would provide the biggest challenge. Leaving the Third Division is hard enough financially, even harder to recruit good enough players.

To help you decide, here is the map of Koana Islands with all the teams on the map (click to enlarge):

Boring Stuff that makes you realise this is just a game
- Unfortunately, due to the limits of the game some teams are slow to fill their team for the season and you may get the odd error message about a team only having 8 or less players on their active roster during pre-season. This is usually because money gets tight and teams keep getting outbid at the last minute. Just get them back to 9 players and you will probably not have a problem again. This has only happened a few times and when you check again a few weeks later they have a squad of 24 or 25.
- Due to the fact I wanted a "Big 5" the top teams (namely Megopolis, New Auckland, Vizhune, Rothes and Independence City) all have a fixed media contract to give them an extra "bump" financially. Just remove this if you want to simulate them losing their sugar daddy tag. And of course, add a similar contract to another team if you want to simulate them making the big time financially.
- Because money is quite tight you will regularly see owners plopping in a few million to keep the team afloat. This is perfectly realistic in the soccer world which is exactly what I'm trying to simulate. It also gives a slight boost to the teams who have owners that don't mind spending big.
- When moving teams up and down divisions make sure you wait until the first day of pre-season and then follow these basic steps:
1. Determine the teams who are moving
2. In the Game Setup screen, go to the League Setup tab
3. On the left side of this screen, you want to click on 'Edit League Structure'
4. You should be on the League Configuration screen for the league you currently have active.
5. Find the 3 teams that are moving and move them.
6. In the top right corner, there is a 'Select League' button. Use this to select the other league.
7. Move the other 3 teams to the other league. and continue this down the chain
10. Just below the 'Select League' button, click 'Generate Fictional Schedule'.
12. Do this for all divisions
13. Your promotion/relegation should be done. But just to be safe, double check your work!

Download Instructions
1. Download 7-zip by clicking here
2. Download the Quickstart here
3. Extract Koanian Baseball.7z file using 7-zip to your desktop
4. Place the "Koanian Baseball.quick" folder into the "quickstart_games" folder which will be located in your OOTP12 directory.
5. Run OOTP12 and click "Quickstart game"
6. Select "Koanian Baseball" and you should be good to go :-)

As always, any feedback/questions is appreciated.

I would just like to say, good lord this quick start takes forever to start up for the first time. I've been sitting here for about 35 minutes waiting for it to finish copying everything in the game and load up.

Holy crap is right. This is like an early Christmas present.

Thanks so much for doing this. That full Koana map is unreal, you must have spent dozens of hours on that alone.

Feedback to follow.

EDIT: I did try again, and the DL was successful and much quicker (30 min). Extracting now.

Did it finish loading in the end?

Yeah, it loaded. I fired up the game and looked around for a few minutes. The one thing I noticed right away is there are no star ratings in the game. So I went into Game Setup and turned on the star ratings but they still don't show up. I play exclusively with star ratings on and don't like playing any other way.

Is this something that I'm doing wrong when trying to fix it? Or is there a reason the star ratings aren't showing up at all even after I "turn them on"?

You know, I've noticed that too but just assumed it was a new feature for 12. Just turn scouting off, that'll fix it.

How do you turn scouting off? I can't find it in league setup.

BTW, the file extracted fine and loaded fine here. Looking forward to this.

I'm at work at the moment so I'm doing this off the top of my head.

Go to the dropdown menu on the league button up the top and select league settings. It should then be under one of the tabs along the top. I think it's Global Setup. It should be a check box.

Yes, thanks. Its, in fact, the very first checkbox in global. Thanks!
