Everyone has their own system. Personally, I just use actual real-world schedules and set those up in Excel, then use some basic formulas to rework the data into the proper format for OOTP.

For something created from scratch, gmo is the wizard at that. He uses a spreadsheet to set up the basic criteria and follows what might be called a mathematical approach to filling in the schedule.

If you want to do your own from scratch, the tips I would offer would be to first plan out the format (i.e. how many games against which teams) and caledar length of the schedule. Break that down into series. Then work on your schedule in terms of series rather than games — this will cut down considerably on the number of items you have to work with (there are 2,430 games in an MLB schedule, but only 780 series). Depending on your divisional alignments, you may also be able to further work with the schedule in terms of blocks of series. A four-team division, for example, can have a block of six divisional series where a team plays two series against each of its divisional rivals. You can then duplicate this block of series to rapidly build up a schedule.

If you want to avoid having to build a schedule, just check out all the currently existing schedule files for OOTP. There are a lot of them.

I use the round robin pairing program at the Cern Chess Club. So, if I wanted to do a quick 154 game balanced schedule for an 8 team league, I would break it down into sections. I need 11 games home and away against each team, that's series of 4 4 3 4 4 3. I would copy each round 4 times until I had 28 games complete in a spreadsheet, then I switch columns 1 & 2 with copy and paste so now I have 1 complete set home and away 56 games. Now, I copy 2 more times and I almost done, except I have a schedule of 168 games and no days off. Since, every team needs a 3 game series home and away. So, I go through the schedule and cut a game from 1 of the 4 games sets and stagger them so teams get different days off.

That's how I do it. Try to group the games in smaller round robins and copy until you get the whole season. This tends not to work for divisions of odd number of teams, though.

Here's the pairings for 8 teams. Because the goal in chess pairings is to alternate black and white, home and away is automatically done for you!

Round Robin for 8 players==========================Round #1 : 2-7 3-6 4-5 1-8 Round #2 : 1-2 7-3 6-4 8-5 Round #3 : 3-1 4-7 5-6 2-8 Round #4 : 1-4 2-3 7-5 8-6 Round #5 : 5-1 4-2 6-7 3-8 Round #6 : 1-6 2-5 3-4 8-7 Round #7 : 7-1 6-2 5-3 4-8</PRE>

Hopefully within the next few days I will have something for the XML-format LSDL schedules like done for the CSV OOTP6 schedules: a couple-stop list of link to the posted and available files.
