When do we start hearing stuff about the next game?

It seems that about this time last year we were hearing about OOTP 2006. Any news as to when we will be hearing about the next version of OOTP? Will it be like a 6.5 update where it's basically the same game with a few major upgrade and fixes or will it be like 2006 where it's a completely new game?

SI vowed to never do a complete re-write after all the head-aches they had after CM4 came out. I trust that Markus will have learned the same lesson. I highly doubt we will see a total re-write again, and dearly hope that we won't.

Im pretty sure from various discussions that future additions will be additions to the current engine. In fact. I'm 99.9999999999% sure of it.

I will echo the previous statements, there probably won't be another rewrite anytime soon. Now it's about tweaking things that haven't worked as well as hoped and adding new things. Or at least that's what I have taken from things that have been talked about here

In fairness, the complete rewrite killed the FPS Football series, so both OOTP and CM4 are ahead of the game.

I think Markus would have to be monumentally stupid to do a complete rewrtie after what happened this year.

It is not even really cost effective to do a complete re-write again. I mean, it was necessary given the new code base, but now that there is a complete game on the current code base, I don't see why they would nee another whole complete game.

Given that we're already seeing the shuffling about and scuffling with one another in the bleacher seats, you can be assured it won't be long before the official chatter begins from those in the SI skyboxes. I'd wager by Jan or Feb (if not before) we'll begin to hear official smaller announcements, with the actual Countdown to Release beginning, what was it, just weeks before the actual release?

I'm willing to bet they'll hold off on discussion of the game until they can show us something different.

This community has had too many bad experiences with several game companies that presented their games earlier than they should have. I think SI wants to avoid that.

It wouldn't surpise me though if they try to release the game earlier than last time. I think another July release would serve no benefit, the 2007 game needs to be out by opening day.

I think the ganme was out on May 31st last time but i could be wrong.
Thats only a couple of months later than usual. I beleive the game as been released usually in March or April. I just hope Markus has taken the communitys suggestions and complaints about OOTP 2006 and made a decision on what he can get into 2007 and work on perfecting it and only add anything later that has to be in the game. I know we are always coming up with something but even if its a great feature to have and should be in the game, well if the game can work without it for a year then id rather he wait till next year than putting something in the last minute.
Having said that i am expecting 2007 to be probably the best version yet. Because 2006 wasnt bad but Markus will have a year to see what he did right and what he did wrong. I think 2007 will probably be a combination of the best of 6.5 and 2006. well at least i hope so. Anyways i expect an earlier release than last version but hey if Markus thinks the game isnt ready to release till July i sure as hell aint gonna rush him. Just because the baseballl season is over in October doesnt mean i stop playing ootp.

I think a Opening Day release would be in SI's best interest, but I know that I'll probably be buying OOTP 2007 even if it comes out in June again. That being said, I really hope we don't have to wait that long again.

Since 2007 will be based on the same engine as 2006, is it safe to assume that universes created in 2006 will be usable in 2007?

I hope so. I'll probably have 5 or more years invested in my solo league by the time 2007 come sout.

I don't see why not. If 6 and 6.5 leagues worked with 2006, then 2006 leagues should work with 2007, but I don't know for sure.

Well, we had this recent confirmation:

A small update!

Anyone know if you can add leagues as you go? I know that was a popular idea among people earlier. It's something I'm definetly interested in.

I had to think about this for a while. I think the difference is that Mark Duffy was a lot more involved with this forum this time last year, and he's probably the best one to answer these questions. Doesn't stop us from speculating wildly on our own, though.

EDIT: My, God, that's it! My 1,000th post! Wow!

And it went by just like that... I had such big plans for post 1,000... Maybe post Denise Richard's home phone number... I was gonna get drunk and go on a big rant, tell you all exactly what I thought of you... I even had pans to say something really, really PROFOUND: "You were once fast and sporty, now you're just slow and forty!" Well, that wasn't it, that's just a place-holder comment, because I didn't really think I'd make 1,000 posts so fast... man, all that time spent here on this forum, it's just a blur... you people wouldn't believe the things I've seen... attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I've seen C-Beams glitter in space near the Tannhauser Gate... all these things are lost... like tears... in rain... WOO HOO!! 1,000 POSTS!!! WOOO!!! HOOOO!!!!!!!

Last edited by Twelvefield : 12-04-2006 at 10:26 PM. Reason: 1,000th post, baby!!!

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Marc Duffy has been involved with other games for SI and I am guessing once he returns to OOTP we might start hearing some stuff. But that's just my guess? so Who really knows
