Who are your favorite players from days past?
Basically, I started this thread because I'm interested to see who your guys' favorite players are from the past. Just for the threads sake, lets cut the time off in the early 80's. So any players that are still playing today don't count in this thread. I want to know who you guys like to pay attention to in your historical replays and who you root for.
Mine would be: Walter Johnson Honus Wagner Ed Delahanty Nap Lajoie John McGraw Joe Jackson And sometimes a few others, depending upon how far I get into my leagues. I almost always make sure I pay special attention to those guys though. Walter Johnson is my most favorite player of all time, so I gotta keep a close eye on him. The rest have become personal favorites of mine by playing multiple solo historical leagues, reading about them, and just liking the teams they played for. It was also awesome to be able to see their plaques at Cooperstown.

Well, because of this game, I have a special fondness for Rube Kroh (my leagues version of Cliff Markle....6 time A.G. Spalding Award Winner), and a couple of local guys, Chet Hoff and Shad Barry (first MLB player from my hometown of Newburgh NY from what I can tell)

Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you. |

Yeah well, I'm the one that created the thread and set the parameters for the thread. So how old you are has no bearing on who your favorite players are. Especially when in regards to the game.

I met Howard back in the early 60's when he came up with LA; he was an amazing presence to an awestruck young boy, a larger-than-life hero. Sadly, he always underperforms in my sims, no matter how I try to tilt the table in his favor.
Good choices one and all. I'd add Koufax, Musial, Mantle, Joe Hauser, Goose Goslin, Sam Rice, and Karl Spooner, my all-time favorite "couldabeen". |

I will never forget watching Frank towel himself off over and over and over while in the on-deck circle during July and August in Washington - DC in the summer is aheckuva humid place (and it appears he was quite a sweaty guy). I idolized him when I was growing up, and had the good fortune to meet him later in life at a baseball card show. He seemed like a pretty nice guy (and heck he's one big fella too!). |
