Ty Cobb

I have run about 6 sims so far - Ty Cobb always seems to finish with a career average of .320, well below his career .367 (or .366 depending on where you look).

Anyone seeing anything similar?

I've seen him have a CEI in three seperate sims now, usually in 1915. I think Markus has hardcoded it .

First four years with him, and he's yet to hit above .245, even though both of his contact ratings are 20. Kinda weird.

OOTPB 2006 doesn't know names, only ratings.

Ty Cobb did quite well in one of the historical leagues I've run. I started this league in 1910, and Cobb played until 1925.

Career Highlights

Hit for the cycle 3 times
Won MVP twice
37 game hitting streak twice, once in 1912, once in 1923
Had 5 hits in a game twice and 6 hits in a game once

Played for the Tigers until 1919 when he was traded to the Browns. In 1924 he was traded to the Cubs and retired after the 1925 season. Hit .342 in his final season as a starter.

2957 Career Games
3879 Hits
655 Dbl's
275 Tpl's
112 Hr's
1513 Rbi's
1920 R's
1099 SB
474 CS

Career Avg, Obp, Slg, Ops - .337, .403, .470, .874

Never won a WS. Best season was 1911 when he hit .388 with a VORP of 101.3.

Cobb had a real rough go of things in the sim I just finished. Here are his injuries that sidelined him for more than 2 months only:
back injury 7 months
torn ACL 11 months
fractured skull 8 months
back injury 2 months
another 2 month injury
fractured ulna 2 months

Despite all of that he still managed to win an MVP and 3 Gold Gloves while getting 1390 hits and batting .289 for his career.

I just started a league starting in 1910 last night and sure enough, he broke his knee and retired via CEI about three months into the season. He actually wasn't putting up Ty Cobb-awesome numbers, but he was suitable enough, putting something like .300 and maybe 4 or 5 HRs. No weekly/monthly awards, no All Star hopes.

Can you unretire players? As a member of the Ty Cobb Fanclub, I may insist that a broken kneecap is nothing more than a hangnail for the Georgia Peach.

If you're still in the same season and are playing as Commish, you can edit the injury in the Editor screen, can't you?

Not at home, so I can't check, but I think it basically put him in a free agent/uninjured status and he was listed as "retired." In the editor screen, I think I can just put him back on the Tigers and all should be well. I think....

Yes. I've simmed the first decade several times under different modifier settings, trying to better understand the game engine. Cobb is usually not as impressive as Nap Lajoie. I figure Cobb was more lucky than good in (real) life....lol.

The reason is highly correlated with the DB you use. If you use the Lahman DB, Nap Lajoie will import in 1901, when he hit .426, with very high contact ratings. Cobb, will import in 1905 when he had a cup of coffee and did poorly. As a result, he starts with very low ratings and even though he has high potential ratings, he rarely will reach it. Try to import him in 1906 or 07 or using Arod/Garlon DB (assuming they have fixed this issue).

I the league I'm running, post 1.1 patch, he is one of the dominant players in league history.
25 ML seasons
4365 Hits
1781 RBI
2849 Runs
1246 SB
.332 Avg
1747.7 VORP

I'm up to 1980 and Cobb, Ruth and Hornsby have most of the career records.

My Ty Cobb was a nine time all star that hit .321 for his career with 3013 hits.

With the recent discovery of Tycobbia and all, I'm a bit overwhelmed at the moment.

Little know Cobb fact - He was the first major sports figure to star in a movie:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158971/

Then there's always the newsboy in Detroit that he may or may not have bludgeoned to death with a pistol handle. A lot of laughs that Ty was but he sure as hell wasn't a lucky ball player.
