great players retiring

in my historical sim i have had great players retiring way to early and it has not been from injuries. some of the guys to retire early walter johnson and christy mathewson (both at age 28) and joe dimaggio and dizzy dean (both at age 24) is there any reason that this is occuring? i mean babe ruth retired the same year as dimaggio, but ruth was 42. is this just tottaly randomly happening?

There does seem to be an issue with pitchers. DiMaggio hasn't done anything in my tests either, I think he may be importing badly.

He's never retired that young in my tests, he might just have had a talent drop and not developed. The game is still partly random. Just have another go.

I love the randomness of it, but it seems to be a bit too random sometimes. In my current sim, currently in 1915, started in 1871: (Note-Injuries were not a factor in any of these Careers)

Cy Young-retired after compiling a career 1-1 record.
Ty Cobb-is a career .294 hitter after 9 Seasons
Matty-retired with a losing record and loss than 160 wins.
Addie Joss-played 5 Seasons, all as a relief Pitcher.
Walter Johnson-banished to the Pen after 6 mediocre Years as a Starter.
Mordecai Brown-under 60 career wins, losing record.

There are 2-3 more, plus a host of mediocre players that excelled, but since I am at work, only these come to mind right away. You would think at least one or two of the Guys above would have had stellar Careers??? I am curious what others experience and if this is something you think should be tweaked

The only tweak I think could satisfy everyone on this would be a suggestion I saw raised last week, for there to be a 'slider' allowing fewer/more development changes. The fictional and online players could bump this up a little (complaints it's too predictable), the historical replay players (not all historical players) could bump it down a little (complaints it's too random).

I think that's a great idea RMY. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the surprises and usually they are reasonable. This last uni for whatever Reason was crazy. I will post my current leader boards when I get home....I am very well read on the Deadball era and prior and I had to go look up information on a couple of Guys I was not at all familiar with.

When these guys retired, did you check to see if they had ratings drops or anything like put up poor numbers for a couple seasons? Or did they retire while on top of their game?

You have to remember, names mean nothing to OOTP.

Babe Ruth, Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb, Joe D, they are all Joe Schmo to the AI. That's why I'm asking about their performance.

Well with Irv Young above, looks like he moved to the bullpen. Reason may have been that the Phillies boycotted Chicago or put out a contract on his life. Check news for 1905 - 4 SHO's against them!

Even when I was playing OOTP 6, I had some anomolies like that as well. Cy Young didn't get to 200 wins and Cobb was a career .304 hitter, though he did hit .394 one season. Most of his early years of hitting .270 pulled down his career average, since I think he hit over .350 3 times.

I've learned not to really expect 'real' statistics, since the dynamic of the teams in my league are changed from real life. I usually let the AI make their own trades and each year's first-year player draft is a true draft and I don't assign rookies to their real life teams. Christy only won 250 games in my sim because the Giants didn't have Mugsy McGraw around to pull all of the best players over to New York. Team dynamics have a huge effect on things I think.

In OOTP 2006 recently, I had King Kelly retire at age 28 for no apparent reason. One day I looked in the retired players list and there he was, 0 for all his ratings and all. And he was coming off a decent year... .312 average or so. Maybe he fell off a mule and hit his head, or fell over the Niagara Falls bridge like Ed Delahanty. I miss the days of guys going on the DL because of a bar fight in OOTP 6! I haven't seen any of those in 2006 yet...lots of torn MCL's and Ruptured Disk Back's though.

John McGraw missed a chunk of the 1903 season as manager when Dummy Taylor pegged him in the face with a baseball in warmups, so hey, anything could happen back then. Heck, maybe diptheria got the King for all I know.

Have you guys noticed players coming out of retirement and coaching, scouting and managing ? It's happening in my Historical replay. Joe Sewell is porbably the most notable. Played from 1923-1935 currently a bench coach for Detroit on a 5 year contract lol. That to me is cool !

As for early retirement, Walter Johnson checked out early on me too, but i've seen nice careers too in Ruth's 722 homeruns, Cy Youngs 404 wins, Ed Walshs' 1.03 era year @ 20-7 oh and i have to add the 1952,1953, and 1954 world series between Brooklyn and the Yankees; Yankees in 7 '52, Dodgers in 7 '53, and Yankees in 5 '54 (Duke Snider and Mantle winning the Babe Ruth award each year for their respective leagues)

luvin it guys !
