Newbie can't get first game started

I'm trying to follow tihe instructions in ootpb8_manual.pdf, but I must be missing something.

Step 1. I choose Game->Load Quick Start Game->Majors.quick->Create Game (button)-> ("Please wait loading databases"). Now, it tells me, "Your game has been created, but you need to create a manager identity! Go to the Game menu..."

Well, I already have a manager identity, because I have been through this entire sequence of steps 5-6 times now.

But, I dutifully go to the Game menu and to Add/Edit Human Manager. Sure enough, the previous manager identity that I created is still there, so I click on it, then click the OK button.

Not seeing an obvious next step, I make a wild guess and click Load Saved Game. Ah, I see my game there, so I click on it, then click OK.

"Please wait saving database", at which point it lists "database details".

Or, I can try Create New Game, which eventually leads me to a dialog box "You have received a personal message!". I see no choice but to read and/or delete the "job opening" messages. So, I delete all of the messages.

At this point, I don't see how to resume getting the game started, so I go back to Step 1 and repeat all of the steps again.

What I am doing wrong? Why can't I get a game started?

Thanks in advance for you help.

First using the 8 manual to try and start a 2006 game may have some logic holes, but when you get to selecting previous manager, make sure you select which team you wish to manage from there (that will stop you from getting all the job opening messages). Once you have selected your team you can move forward by going to your team pages and doing what you will to you roster.

Thanks

zekester91, thanks for the reply.

I have a feeling that 'play' has different meaning to different people.

To some people, it appears that 'play' means to start selecting players and forming a team.

From my naive perspective, 'play' means to start a game, you know, where the pitcher throws a ball toward the plate while a batter is standing in the batter's box.

By watching two .WMV tutorials and reading through various sections of the manual, I finally was able to start 'playing' a game, although I doubt that I could recite the actions that I had to go through to make it happen. It involved clicking League icon, then 'Schedule', then finding a game where there was a 'Manage' button for me to click on.

I'm now off and 'playing'...

Thanks again.
