Announcing New League: 'Where The Greats Play' a 1941 league for the game's best players and GMs

'Where The Greats Play', a league for the game's best players and best general manages, is readying for its initial campaign. It should be a fun first season as 1941 replicates the epic MVP battle between Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio. Williams hit over .400 for the last time in baseball history. But, DiMaggio on the strength of his historic 56 game hitting streak took home the award. Some felt that Williams, who did not get along well with the sportswriters, should have won the award – he did outhit DiMaggio over the course of those 56 games.

After '41 we move to the 'Lost Years' when, in real time, our heros on the baseball field became real heros by fighting for our country on the battlefield. There will be no World War II in WTGP, so we will see what kind of stats stars like Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and Mel Ott could have generated in their peak years.

After the “war what if”, WTGP will play host off to the epic Red Sox/Yankee rivalry which defines the sport of baseball. Should that grow stall, we'll have westward expansion to look forward to.

There never was, and there never will be, a better time to be a baseball fan.

WTGP will be a unique field both in its level of play and off the field rules. With some unique rules added since the last announcement and some taken away.
  • Historically accurate salaries will be used and to replicate the reserve clause, players will have to put in ten years of major league service before becoming free agents. Their salaries for those seasons will be determined by game mandated arbitration. If a team signs a player to a contract, they will become a free agent at the end of that contract regardless of years of service. This is mandated by the game.
  • Ratings on a 1-10 scale will be used
  • Your typical OOTP player draft will be used – not the assigning players to teams which had previously been the plan
  • The American League and National League will be split into two sub divisions with the champion of each division qualifying for the playoffs.
  • I will take my hometown Washington Senators as my team.
  • OOTP calculated league totals will be used
  • Sims will occur three times a week; 15 days each.

I replied to the original thread and I would like a team in this league, please.
My first choices would be the Red Sox and Yankees.

Glad to see that you've reconsidered. I'm definitely still interested.

Team preference: Either of the Philadelphia franchises would be great.

Possible to get some clarification on this please?

Say an owner has a pretty bad team and he invests a couple seasons getting some good young players but the team continues to lose for those couple of seasons and the Computer decides to fire him. Is that what you mean?

Seems like a guy could invest a lot of time and effort for nothing. I know I'd be a tad upset if I put a lot into a team only to be fired by the AI because it doesn't have as much patience as me.

Yes, it might be a bit rough but I think it's worth the added wrinkle. It'll be like MLB Century.

What would happen to the GMs who would be fired? Are they going to get a shot to return and be some other team's GM?

Also, how big is the file?

Thanks Robert.

Yes, they would return immediately for the next season provided that there are openings.

The file will be as small as reasonable. I can't give a definitive answer on how small.

I will be running some test sims tomorrow to make sure that the hire/fire aspect works in a suitable way. So doubters can hold off until then.

Under pressure, I'm droping the Hire and Fire Coaches thing. I hope the league fills up now.

This sounds like a great idea for a league - count me in!

I'll take the Reds.
