poll- who would be willing to donate a couple bucks

Who would be willing to donate a couple bucks to an individual (or group) to put together a real nice MLB mod pack? The creator could set up a Paypal account to accept donations and, gratuities would ensue based on how well received the product was to the recipients. Could be a pretty good paycheck if you were the first or the best.

i've been working on my set for less than 3 days and have all the AAA players created and about 1/5 of them correctly rated already.as well as having major leaguers imported from lahman and moved to their correct teams. double A players have place holders now. names and height/weight/dob/pob all done. I'm recovering from reconstructive knee surgery so except for the 2 hours a day i have rehab. and the probably 2-3 hours a day i have vistors, I am working on the roster set an average 10+ hours a day and would shoot for 2-3 weeks max before the final version is released. i am planning on doing a beta after finishing AA and then after low A.

i would be willing to work as part of a team to speed things up as well

Oz,

That sort of effort and those type of convictions would encourage me to gladly get off my wallet and throw a donation your way for the effort. I know the CubbyFan faction do a tremendous and painstaking job in research to guarantee all player attributes are spot-on. If you're able to put all those hours in I'm sure your effort will resonate with the same authenticity. Looking forward to your work!

Oz,

Also, as a fellow Illinoisan (Springfield), I definately give you my full endorsement. Good luck!

Ouch, it is not good when one developer talks down to another just because of a self-conceived status they feel they may have achieved from way too many attaboys. Not neccessarily stating that is the case in this situation but, when someone is trying to do something positive go easy on them.
I've been playing stat-based games since I was 12-years old. I'm now way older than that and have been conceiving and replicating rosters (NFL, MLB, and NBA) for 30 years. I feel I can legitamately state from experience anyone can do it that is willing to spend the time and give great attention to detail.
Once again, you've got my vote of confidence.

yea my feelings are if you're gonna do something like this, first off you need to be thick skinned. 2nd there's no need to cop an attitude with others. I started by saying that with erich having been working on this for 2 months plus and cubby for however long, it seems like there should be something to show for it by now? and because I wasn't a fanboy kissing their butts, cubbyfan has to attack me. well that annoys me and only makes me want to work harder. they can do their thing, attack me and use their precious pecota stats and call their set the best thing since sliced bread. but I can do the same thing as well as get imput from the network of actual baseball proffesionals that I know and can lean on for their advise in certain aspects of all this. because numbers don't tell you everythting about a baseball player

This sort of motivation is what makes American Capitalism work. Keep throwing insults, discouragement, and negativity "theSaint's" way and he will overcome. Get after it and create the best rosters OOTP has ever seen and you can be the one that has a legion of followers salivating for your latest and greatest work. Good luck...live large!

...and hope nobody tips off MLB's lawyers!

Remember why OOTP doesn't come with an MLB pack? Because it's illegal to take money for it without MLB's permission (paid licensing).

That's why we refer to them as "donations". If you were selling a product with a price tag on it, you could be opening up a potential lawsuit but, if you give freely...and find individuals that simply love your product enuf to shower you with gratuities it's perfectly legal. At that point all you have to answer to is the taxman.

It doesn't matter if its a "donation."

If money (or anything of value) is received in connection with the distribution of copyrighted material, its a pretty easy argument that this is an unauthorized commercial use. Especially since you're testing the "donation" market ahead of time, implying that collecting "donations" would add motivation for someone's work.

But if you disagree, go ahead and try it.

If a donation for time and effort, absolutely no chance to legally prosecute this. Zero.

This is an amusing thread. I wonder how long before one of the mods will shut it down...

Like I said, try it. Just don't get legal advice from somebody who doesn't know the difference between "prosecute" and "sue."

I will donate to good mod makers like GForce, Erich, Cubby, Jeff Cato, Pierre, Anderson, etc.

I will not donate to upstarts who think this game is "about 10 steps backwards and has already uninstalled the game and will wait for 2 or 3 patches.

Unplayable

I have no probelm donating to people that are modest and are doing rosters for the love of OOTPB and baseball. But people who ask if people would pay for rosters before a set is released? Come on. If you need money as a modivation to put out a great roster, then I really pity you. If you want to see modders who do this stuff the right way, look at cubby, and go to MVP mods. If you really wanted to collect some dough, you should have just made the best roster set out there and opened a paypal donation box, you were better off doing that.
