What do I need to do to start?

I downloaded Cubby's most recent roster set from a thread I found somewhere on this site. I installed it and used Import a 2006, found the dat file, and everything appears to be fine. On first glance, it appears to be pretty accurate. I'm seeing a lot of threads here about steps I need to take to make it work? I've not been active on this site in eons, and I'm not up to date on "Icy's Template"

What exactly do I need to do before starting? I play every game, so I do not want to waste time playing these out if something I did/didn't do is going to crash me later!
