Experimental Database
I crossed the line today. I took a unique angle to the database approach. Why design the database by hand when I can do it programmingly?
I have written some software that changes the Lahman database. The plan is to have the program design the new database on factors that you change in my program. That will be further down the line, but in the meantime, I am going to release some databases to see how they work. The first, what I did was load in the original database. The new database is JUST written with players that played anytime between 1990 and 1999. It basically changes all the years for the players to 1999. When you import the league in, you end up getting ALL of the players that played in the 1990s. I have not figured out this thing completely yet, but this 1st version does create a league. While most of the players are on correct teams, I have not figured out yet why some players are not on a certain team. They may be on Boston instead of Detroit, when they played for both teams in the 1990s. That's ok, as I think the general idea for this would be for a fantasy draft league. So, here is what you do to use this database. Download the zip file and unzip it to a folder like c:/1990s Open up OOTP and create a new league. Pull the players from THIS database and use 1999 as the import year. I would suggest:
Please help me out by examining the league and seeing if you can see how the teams are being filled. I also want to modify it so that every one is 20 years old at import time, but I am having some problems with the master.csv file, as I think there is actually some bad data in the original Lahman database. The fields get out of whack for certain players. You can download the database at: www.planetootp.com/AU1990s.zip - The file is just under 6 meg in size. I will make one for each decade eventually. I also plan on making one for HOF players only and also one for every single player that ever played (with a min. number of at bats or IP). Could you imagion a fantasy draft with every player that ever played in the league? I also envision a BEST TEAM type database. So, the league would consist of all the greatest players that ever played with DETROIT being on Detroit. This program could open all sort of database possibilities. If any of the current database creators would like to give me a hand in writing this program, please let me know.

One quick suggestion. Allow us to edit team names, and somehow work in "auto" expansion of a fantasy league. Would that be possible?

I would actually love to see a program that can create a database that specifically targets all players aged 18-45 for a given season and imports them. This would be perfect for a fantasy league...

The 1st test of the program created a working database, as shown in the link above. The 1st problem I have is with the master.csv file. It has some bad data in it. When I load it in, some of the fields are off and I have not figured out what that is all about yet. So, I can't use the master.csv file. I may have to manipulate it to correct the problems. Lahman really got lazy this year and screwed up the database. He also removed the header information from all of the csv files. I e-mailed him and he never even replied.
I am confused by your request Gambo, that just sounds like a normal import. Once I had the code in place, which took about 15 minutes to write, I was able to create the above database in about 2 minutes. Of course, the parameters are hard coded. The later versions of this software would allow you to set the import settings. Once database I really want to create is one that contains every single player with the min. season at bats. (based on how many games were played in said season). This would be a TRUE greatest players league. This could open all sort of possiblities with a program like this...

Comedian, I love your idea for all the greatest players for a certain team, but that could be a lot of players
. Are you thinking of some way to be able to limit it to the best 25 or 40 players, or, better yet, the best 25 to 40 players of a certain age range? Again, I don't know what capabilities your building into this utility, but I think it would be awesome to do this. Especially if you figure out a way to get it to be Mac compatible ![]()

Larry, on the all time best on each team, will you restrict them to the team that they came up with? That would be my preference. Also suggest bout 100 players per team to give us 3 levels of minors.

Seems like that all time best team is ringing a bell here.
Let's keep the flow going here, good input so far.

Larry, can this be treated like Arod's chao s DB that compresses the time frame to say 20 years and actually import new ammies belonging to their original teams with randoms debut years in the 20 year cycle? For the altime best of each team db, I mean.

Not really right now it imports players if they played in a given season not an age bracket...
