Random Debut Database Creator Utility...

I have created a tool to create Random Debut Databases in the Lahman Format. It does require MS Access and MS Excel (w/analysis pack) to work but I have had a blast today bringing in different players today.

For those that want it I will clean it up a bit and see if PadreFan would like to host and I will also post it on F. Montoya's site also.

I may also put up a folder with 10 different random debut databases for download and then you could select the one you want. The ACCESS database has a report for all the player's debut years also.

This was basically the same thing I did for my OOTP5 Random Debut Database. I used Lahmans for this project but those who want to use another database as the base could very easily do it by importing the batting, pitching, fielding, fieldingOF files into the access database.

Cheers!

Regards,

Sandman

I even made it real easy to use. Run two macros, import the excel table, run another macro, export tables back to csv files. I have been playing this non-stop today.

I added another feature. It bothered me that all the old-time players would have the bad defensive ratings (FA) so I created a error adjustment table and used this to normalize all fielding across the board. Perhaps I may do this for pitching and hitting, but for now I think it is neat to see homerun hitters in the same league as deadball era hitters and pitchers....

I don't think I got the intended results. When I imported the players, it only had 120 players available for the first draft. Any clue what I may have done wrong. I set the first year to 2001 and the last year was 2107 and then I imported the 2001 year. Any help?

What year does your league start? If you want to start in 2001 you must have the random debut setup for something like 1997 as the start year. Depending on how many players and how many teams you have. I did not put this in the read me because I assumed everyone would start in 1901 and use the defaults - my bad..

You should have about 160 players per year. If you use 4 years before the league starts as the start year the will give you 640 players or about 40 players for a 16 team league. If you need more players just start the debut year earlier.....

Also, it is probably best to sim about 10 seasons before your actual league start. This will get more older players into the game. If you have only 4-5 years as the debut year then your players all fit between the 22-27 range. Sim some years and you will get a good mix of all player ages.....or if it doesnt bother you just start at the first year.... both work great.

Hope this helps,.

Regards,

Sandman

Quick question - Did you find the utility easy to use? I want to make it as easy as possiblem, hence the macros. And did you use the key players debut query to see where the stars debut? Just curious.

This sounds really cool. Thanks SM

I do have a question though. Given that it is random, will it pull duplicates ?

NO. The beauty of the design is that it actually modifies all the birth years and debut years puts it into another file to draw the players from. Download the program and read the macros and the query if you have ACCESS and you will see how simple this really is.

I didn't use the key player query because I wanted it to be a surprise so see which players came in when. I will try the other things you suggested. The only thing I had a problem with is where the Macro looks for the randomdebut.xls file as you didn't put in the readme the default folder that it will look in. Other wise, everything else was smooth, thanks.

Important Info

Yes I forgot to put into the readme that the utility is expecting to be installed on the C:\ drive (root), so if you change this then the Macro will need to be updated to point to the newdebut.xls file or the new debut.xls file can be copied to the root directory.

Sorry about that....

If you don't want to deal with a .RAR file, you can grab the .ZIP version from my website.

The only complaint I have about this is that the ages of the players when they debut are a little high. For example, going by Sandman's advice, I had the players start coming in 1997 for the league to start in 2001. Manny ramirez is 31 in the league, though at most he should be 25. There are a few others that are a bit high for them coming in. Anyway I can fix this?

Haven't seen this in my tests. Can you zip the file and send it to me? PM me and I will give you my email. I just need the master file, the master_new table, and new_master table.

OOPS... I figured it out.. read the next post please.
