t_wil,
Your Kid Butler pic is the 1884 version (Frank Edward Butler). That picture is from a photograph of the 1884 Boston Unions. Butler is added to the team photo as an insert. (Source: The Beer and Whiskey League by David Nemec, page 79) Hope this helps... |

Interesting that baseball-reference.com lists a John M. Ryan with the exact same stats for both the Washington Nationals and the Wilmington Quicksteps as Baseball Almanac.com lists for Daniel Sheehan for the 2 aforementioned teams.
Baseball Almanac has Sheehan debuting on 4-19-1884 while baseball-reference has Ryan debuting on 6-11-1884. Both websites show 1884 as the only season they played in. Very odd. Is the player in question Dan Sheehan, John Ryan, or maybe 2 different guys for the 2 different teams? 19th-century baseball research can be very exciting. And maddening... |

I didn't notice that.... crap! I wonder if the community has v-chip and I can't say crap (south park reference) lol
They do have different initials for a middle name... so I would assume they are two different players Ping Gambo: is Dan sheehan on your database as John Ryan or Dan Sheehan http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/ryanjo02.shtml that is the page on baseball reference

The saga of Ryan/Sheehan gets curiouser. T_wil, the link you provided is for John A Ryan. Interestingly, he is listed as playing under the name of Daniel Sheehan and played only for the Baltimore Monumentals.
However, (according to baseball-reference.com) there is also the John M Ryan that played for Washington and Wilmington and accumulated that same stats as Sheehan did according to the baseball almanac website. So now we have; 1)John A Ryan (played as Daniel Sheehan) - Baltimore Monumentals 6 games. 2)Daniel Sheehan - Washington Nationals 7 games and Wilmington Quicksteps 2 games. 3)John M Ryan - Washington Nationals 7 games and Wilmington Quicksteps 2 games. So now, we have 3 different players who may, in fact, be the same person. Or some combination of 2. Or, possibly, they are in fact all 3 different people. Unfortunately, we will probably never know for certain... |

John A. Ryan and Daniel Sheehan is the same person. The confusion is caused by the fact that Baseball Almanac in error have posted the stats for John M. Ryan as those of Daniel Sheehan aka John A. Ryan. Hope that clarifies the situation. Last edited by UKBaseballfan : 08-10-2007 at 12:04 PM. |

So, in other words, Baseball Almanac needs to to re-ID the Daniel Sheehan page to John M Ryan and show Daniel Sheehan as an alternate name on John A Ryan's page. Got it. Whew.
This just confirms why I always use baseball-reference.com. Thanks UK. Ya done good... |

I wondered why nobody liked to play under their own name.... did we have some self-esteem issues.

Re: Carl Erskine
Since you post his pic.. it reminded me of a movie on hbo called Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghost of Flatbush.
Documents the Jackie Robinson time with brooklyn and the battles with New York Giants and Yankees. Also what caused both teams to leave new york. great documentary 1883 There are two Edgar Smith's. Both are off the list and I only have one.
