1942 Hall of Fame

Micah Childress, RHP

Childress was drafted with the 47th overall pick in 1926 out of Stanford. He won Pitcher of the Year in 1935 and was an all-star the same year. He also was part of the Twins 1931 World Series team. 12 of his seasons spread from 1929 to 1941 were over 3 WAR, but his peak was just not quite high enough for the HOF.

Career Stats: 3128 IP, 701 BB, 892 K, 3.56 FIP, 89 FIP-, 58.9 WAR, 42.4 JAWS

1943 Hall of Fame

Name: GeraldoMoralesHOF.PNG
Views: 15

Geraldo Morales, CF

Morales is a special veteran's committee election. When he retired in 1920, he had 9 years and 129 days of MLB service so never was eligible for the Hall of Fame. However, his career numbers stack up well with any of the other CF, despite his abbreviated career. He was drafted by the Mets 4th overall in 1906, won 5 gold gloves, went to 5 all-star games, and was a silver slugger. After retiring, Morales became a General Manager and led the Road Warriors and Bees in the Atlantic League before getting a shot with the Phillies and Giants.

Career Stats: 5874 PA, 349 SB, .337 wOBA, 121 wRC+, 165.9 ZR, 47.2 WAR, 43.8 JAWS

Name: GabeMortonHOF.PNG
Views: 14
Size: 276.5 KB
Gabe Morton, LHP

Morton finishes his career as one of the top 3 or 4 starting pitchers in the history of the game (Avila, Jensen, McFadden). He was drafted 12th overall in 1921 out of Denmark High School - he and Johan Velez were classmates, but they didn't win a State Championship despite having a .675 WPCT their senior year. Morton was a 3-time pitcher of the year, two-time MVP, 9-time all-star, and one-time World Series Champ.

Career Stats: 3900.3 IP, 998 BB, 1916 K, 3.28 FIP, 83 FIP-, 87.0 WAR, 72.0 JAWS

Name: JohnButtonHOF.PNG
Views: 14
Size: 273.0 KB
John Button, CF

Button's career 554 doubles is the most in MLB history. He was drafted out of Minnesota in 1925 with the 12th overall pick and stayed in the Midwest his whole career with the Chicago Cubs. He was Rookie of the Year in 1927 and MVP in 1930. He won three gold gloves, one silver slugger, and went to 7 all-star games.

Career Stats: 11197 PA, 2893 H, 132 HR, 335 SB, .341 wOBA, 106 wRC+, 118.4 ZR, 52.8 WAR, 45.7 JAWS

Lucas Roe, LHP

Roe was also drafted 12th overall but in 1927 out of Huntington Beach. He won Pitcher of the Year in 1938 and went to two all-star games but finished his career at age 33. His injury list is one line long - Injured (Flu), day-to-day for 1 day.

Career Stats: 2623.7 IP, 869 BB, 1025 K, 3.55 FIP, 92 FIP-, 45.1 WAR, 46.0 JAWS

Reggie Veras, SS

Veras is the lone international signing on this list, coming from the Dominican Republic in 1918. His injury list is much longer and he very rarely played an entire season. He was Rookie of the Year in 1924 with an impressive 5.8 WAR in 135 games. He also went to three all-star games and was a silver slugger and World Series Champ.

Career Stats: 9001 PA, 2307 H, 344 SB, .337 wOBA, 102 wRC+, 52.7 ZR, 44.4 WAR, 36.1 JAWS

MVP Award Name Changes

In 1944 in the real world, the MVP award was renamed to honor the late commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. We have now reached 1944 in this league and I will be renaming the MVP award in each league (excluding the minor leagues) in honor of a particularly memorable batter.

MLB: Tomas Reed
It was between Reed and Velez, but Reed was the first to 3,000 hits while Velez only had 2,359 and Reed came along much sooner than Velez. I wish there was an easily dominant batter just as there was for pitching.

Atlantic League: Eric Rubio
This was a hard one to determine - Rubio is the only player in the Atlantic League on any of the rate leaderboards, meaning he played in the MLB and also had over 2500 PA in the ATL. I'm not sure if any other players met the 2500 PA mark but retired and were deleted without making the MLB.

NCAA: Phoenix Amoss (St. Mary's Gaels)
Typhoe Valentin has the career record for WAR but he did it in 4 years. Tomas Reed, Rory Shew, and Jimmy Canales were also in the running.

California Interscholastic Federation (CIF): Cole Dins (Cypress Centurions)
No real obvious pick here but Dins had a better MLB career than Urdar Arisson, Seymour Aguirre, and Josiah Everson. Yujiro Imai won the most MVPs (3) but he is still too young (27) and his MLB career is only partially completed.

Florida High School Athletic Association (FLHSAA): Gilson Cravoa (Wiregrass Ranch Bulls)
He did play for 5 years in high school but once he signed with the Angels he turned in a Hall of Fame career. R.J. Taylor was also in consideration.

Georgia High School Association (GHSA): Kerry Law (Buford Wolves)
Law was also a 5-year high school player but did turn in a borderline MLB HOF career. Many of the top position players in career WAR for the GHSA are quite young (still in their 20s).

Illinois High School Association (IHSA): Joshua Ham (Brother Rice Crusaders)
Ham has had by far the best MLB career of any Illinois High School batter, even though his HS career amount was lower than that of the likes of Houston Williams and Chris Spinner. Bobby Fendley was another memorable Illinois batter who turned into a borderline HOF candidate.

New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA): Jeff Garcia (Suffern Mounties)
Jeff Garcia has had the best MLB career of any NY hitter. Ebenezer Daniels finished in the top 3 for MVP every year in high school, but actually finished his MLB career with a similar total to what he had in high school. Steven Hayman, Dave Farver, and Smack Housand were all NY batters as well.

New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA): Elliot Raprap (Volcano Vista Hawks)
Raprap was really the only selection here, even though he is still active in the majors. Both D.J. Vetter and Kendall Bradford had better MLB careers up to this point but Raprap still has the opportunity to surpass them and he had a much better high school career.

North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA): Lester Taylor (North Buncombe Black Hawks)
Taylor did play five years in high school but he has the most High School and MLB WAR of any North Carolina hitter. Thomas Hagan was also from the NCHSAA.

Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA): Aiden Shelton (Pendleton Buckaroos)
Similar to North Carolina, Shelton was the best hitter in high school and the majors. Dan McKee is another HOF that came out of Oregon.

Texas University Interscholastic League (TUIL): Benny Wurdeman (College Station Cougars)
Wurdeman is one of three hall of fame hitters from Texas. The others are Phoenix Amoss and D.J. Leverton. Amoss was ineligible since he already has an MVP award named after him and Leverton didn't have quite as good an MLB career as Wurdeman.

Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA): Johan Velez (Denmark Vikings)
Velez held the record for most WAR in the WIAA until Nick Reed came along. However, Reed has quite a ways to go before matching Velez's 77 MLB WAR. Youssef Raadouni is another former WIAA player to make the HOF.
