HUL 5 LEE 7: Maldonado 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K. García 2-4, HR (12). The bullpen nearly chucked it away after Lúcio Maldonado's excellent effort. [75-52]

HUL 3 LEE 2: McGinnity 7.1 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 0 BB. After 23 successful saves, Jaime Flores finally blew his first save opportunity of the season. It would be churlish in the extreme for me to complain. We didn't deserve to win, anyway, mustering only 3 hits in total. [75-53]

McGinnity leads the league in walks per 9 innings, at just 0.85. Brilliant.

HUL 9 LEE 3: Magana 2-3. [75-54, 1st place, 3 game lead over NEW]

With that series win, the Avocets have closed in to just 4 games behind us in the division. And next up we face the powerhouse Manchester Falcons. We're going to get caught here unless the boys can snap out of this slump quickly.

LEE 2 MAN 6: Fuentes 2-4. Another limp defeat. [75-55]

LEE 3 MAN 2: Benítez 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K. Magana 2-5, HR. We were just one out away from losing in the top of the 9th when Ed James smashed a 401ft 2-run homer to tie the game at 2-2. Pedro Magana's solo homer in the 11th won it. [76-55]

LEE 2 MAN 7: Magana 2-3. Mitchell 2-4. Maldonado got taken apart in the 5th. These heavy defeats have become much too frequent. [76-56, 1st place, 2 game lead over NEW]

LIV 2 LEE 3: McGinnity 8.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB. Magana 2-4, BB, SB. This was even more of a lucky escape than our previous win two days ago. At 2-1 down, twice in the 9th we were down to our final strike, but Will Page and Alfonso Rodríguez, who fouled off 4 balls on a 2-strike count to stay alive, clawed their way on base, and young Randall Hunt's RBI single tied the game. Louie Campbell's single drove in Rodríguez for the winning run in the 11th. [77-56]

LIV 3 LEE 5: Mitchell 2-5, 2 SB. Kemp 5.0 IP, 3 ER. [78-56]

LIV 3 LEE 2: González 7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER. Frye 2-4, DBL. [78-57, 1st place, 3 game lead over NEW]

27 Aug 2042 - rest day

Hull have fallen back a little after losing their last 5. That series defeat against us has dropped the Emeralds to bottom of the North West Division... but with a 75-60 record. It's certainly the most competitive division I can ever remember seeing. Next up we face the Northern League-leading Sky Chiefs and we need some wins.

We've been treading water for more than a month now, and we're lucky Newcastle and Hull haven't caught us. The offense has gone right off the boil since Tim Richard got injured. Obviously any team would miss the leader in the batting title from their lineup, but across the board batters are off form. Alex Frye still regularly pops homers but is going through a cold spell (for him). All the other guys have seen their key metrics slip in recent weeks.

Another disappointment, overall, is our pitching. Our team ERA of 3.61 is 7th in the NL and below where I expect us to be. The trade for Carlos González has improved the rotation, but only a little. I'm wondering whether in the offseason I need to go out and get another top of the rotation guy to partner Brian McGinnity and pack a real one-two punch. At present, I have a fairly balanced rotation with reasonably consistent quality across the five guys. Maybe it would be better - and also give me more chance in the postseason - if I shifted the balance of my resources so that the top 2 or 3 guys are elite quality and the 4th and 5th starters aren't as good as González and Maldonado? If our current run of mediocre form continues and we miss out on the playoffs again I will definitely see what I can do. I consider McGinnity untouchable, but I would, for example, be prepared to give up Chris Kemp and another front-line pitcher or hitter if that's what it took to get someone like Todd Lilly or Juan Aguilera.

LEE 3 STO 2: Benítez 7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2-2. Flores SV (25). [79-57]

LEE 1 STO 0: McGinnity 8.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB. Flores SV (26). The crowd at the Ballpark of the Potteries were expecting a quality pitchers' duel between Brian McGinnity and Clay Barnes, and that's exactly what they got. Barnes was excellent; McGinnity was even better. [80-57]

LEE 7 STO 3: James 3-4, HR, DBL. Mitchell 2-5, DBL. [81-57, 1st place, 4 game lead over NEW]

That sweep was fantastic, and just what the doctor ordered. Hopefully this is us starting to build some momentum in time for the final stretch.

WOL 2 LEE 4: Mullins 3-3, 2 HR, BB. Kemp 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB. Hayashi 2-3, HR. James 2-4, DBL, SB. I always see reaching 82 wins as a key landmark. It means we have another winning season, our seventh straight. But with this group I have higher ambitions. [82-57]

Joel Hopps is showing me what I missed out on by not playing him. Today he won Northern League pitcher of the month. Since I traded him to the Arrows, he's gone 7-1, 2.37. I do have a knack of finding good, cheap pitchers in free agency, but then not actually playing them...

Unusually, I made three call-ups as rosters expanded after today's game. Sloan Coffman returns to the active roster to add an extra bullpen arm. Veteran outfielder Henry Harris (anyone remember him?) returns purely as a pinch-running option. Mike Clements is called up to give me a right-handed infield option on the bench.

WOL 4 LEE 5: Mullins 2-5, DBL, SB. García 2-5, DBL. [83-57]

WOL 1 LEE 0: Benítez 5.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1-2, DBL. Fuentes 3-4. Frustrating. Nine hits failed to produce a run. [83-58, 1st place, 3 game lead over NEW]

Kenshin Hayashi is pestering me for a new contract. Take the '2' off the front of your $29m salary demand, old boy, and you might have a chance.

3-5 Sep 2042

LEE 2 COV 0: McGinnity 8.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. Frye 3-4, HR. Fuentes 2-4, 2 DBL. Brian McGinnity is now 17-4 with a Northern League-leading 2.19 ERA. [84-58]

LEE 3 COV 4: García 2-4, TPL. Fuentes 2-4. [84-59]

LEE 8 COV 7: Mitchell 2-5, TPL. Hayashi 2-4, BB. We were coasting until Bertoldo Chiappo gave up 4 runs in the 7th and put the game on a knife edge, but we held on. [85-59, 1st place, 3 game lead over NEW]

The games are running out now, but we just can't open up a decisive gap over the Swordfish. This has the feel of a race that will go to the wire. Newcastle are actually one game outside a wildcard spot so there's no margin of error.

6-8 Sep 2042

SHE 4 LEE 7: Frye 2-4, 2 HR. Mitchell 3-5, HR. Flores SV (30). [86-59]

SHE 4 LEE 1: Benítez 7.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 10 K. Flames starter Jorge Rosa is a mean cookie and had too much stuff for us today. [86-60]

SHE 4 LEE 2: Page 2-4, HR. Fuentes 2-4. Magana 2-4. [86-61, 1st place, 1 game lead over NEW, 3 game lead over wildcard]

The in-form Swordfish have won 5 in a row to virtually eliminate our narrow division lead.

9 Sep 2042 - rest day

Youngster Randall Hunt has made a cracking start to his major league career, hitting 11-24 with a .980 OPS. He's now eating into Jim Mullins's playing time at CF, and starting every third game against right-handed pitchers.

10-12 Sep 2042

CMB 2 LEE 9: García 2-4, HR (15). Fuentes 2-4, HR. Kemp 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 2-2. [87-61]

CMB 2 LEE 6: Frye 3-4, HR. García 3-4, HR. González 7.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 10 K. Lang 2-4, 2 DBL. [88-61]

CMB 4 LEE 6: Mitchell 2-3, HR, 2 BB. Rich Mitchell took home the man of the match accolades, but it was my bullpen, who threw 5 innings without allowing a single baserunner, who really won us the game. [89-61, 1st place, 3 game lead over NEW, 6 game lead over CMB]

Cumbria are the team one spot outside of the NL wildcard places. So that sweep of them gives us a strong chance of at least making the wildcard game if we do end up losing the division to Newcastle.

Fans of abysmal baseball may be interested to know that Derby are 32-118. Yes, that's 32-118. They are fully 20 games behind the next worst team in the EBA, Wolverhampton.
